This event is a huge drawcard for families and provides sailing enthusiasts the opportunity to view the race flotilla up close at Southport Yacht Club throughout the race program.
Sailing is a fantastic sport celebrated across the globe and our city’s yachting facilities have been upgraded in recent years to improve services and support for both the sport and marine industry.
It is pleasing to see the race program shift to October with more favourable conditions for offshore racing from the coast to the Queensland-New South Wales border.
I encourage visitors to stay a little longer, party a little harder, and soak up the magic of the coast.

SAIL PARADISE, THE HISTORY, THE NEW DATE AND IT’S EXCITING FUTURE
Several years back, three spirited and like-minded sailors from Southport Yacht Club conceived Sail Paradise over a few lively bar conversations. Today, almost 15 years on, this regatta has blossomed into the largest of its kind in South-East Queensland, drawing skippers and crews from across the nation. With the Gold Coast’s irresistible allure, stunning beaches, and vibrant attractions, it’s no wonder that family and friends eagerly join competitors for both on-water and off-water events.
Amidst challenging times, the sport of sailing remains a liberating escape, offering a unique magic that resonates with all who embrace it. The 14th Bartercard Sail Paradise’s evolution continues, and Southport Yacht Club is dedicated to enhancing sailing for the local fleet, with it’s initiative to push this event into October, rather than January. This gives an amazing opportunity for more yachts to be able to compete, especially because yachts can now race in both Sail Paradise and Sydney Hobart in the same year. Southport Yacht Club aims to create a bigger fleet and a better regatta with yachts, skippers, and crew that would ordinarily be unable to race due to the time constraints returning to Queensland after the new year.
In a significant move, Bartercard Sail Paradise 2023 now opens the “Summer of Sailing Series Australia” (SSSA) which is a combined sailing partnership, now in its second year. This fantastic series is a collaboration between Southport Yacht Club, Wynnum Manly Sailing Club, and Queensland Cruising Yacht Club. This enticing series encompasses five premier sailing events, attracting elite yachts, devoted skippers, and their crews from up and down the coast.

DENIS THOMPSON - RACE DIRECTOR
Australia’s leading professional Yacht Race Manager, Denis Thompson has been confirmed as Race Director for the Bartercard Sail Paradise. Denis is one of Australia’s most respected yacht race admins and will coordinate all matters relating to the Regatta’s racing.
Denis is well known for managing the racecourse for major sailing events around Australia and overseas, Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Festival of Sails Geelong, Hamiliton Island Race Week, Magnetic Island Race Week, Sail Paradise and Sail Port Stephens just to name a few. He has also run numerous state, national and world events. Denis struggles to walk through a yacht club anywhere in Australia without having to stop and talk to someone he knows. Denis, is best known for providing excellent competition for all divisions, racing and cruising.
SIMON TURPIN - REGATTA DIRECTOR
Simon is Southport Yacht Club’s Sailing Operations Manager with a wealth of sailing knowledge – being Australian Sailing Accredited and a sailor himself, Simon understands the importance of good quality racing and management. This will be Simon’s 10th Sail Paradise Regatta and looks forward to an exciting and safe event.
NIC DOUGLASS - SAILING
Nicole Douglass has been a part of the marketing team for our major regattas here at Southport Yacht Club over many years. Her live coverage of racing is well produced, narrated and well followed. In addition Nicole takes photographs of our racing, making them available to competing yachts and for usage in the clubhouse during presentations. Nicole also assists with these presentations. Overall, her extensive knowledge of the local yachts and crew, experience and connections add tremendous value to our club events and Sail Paradise would not be the same without her contributions.
