SADHBH McCLENAGHAN Means the Toll of a Bell On past the creek With its natural flow Lives the big brown bear In its natural home. Into the woods, Surrounded by trees, It’s a natural climber On the native Sequoia. It trudges along, With pride and with joy, Its young in its wake, One dare not destroy. Some call them grizzlies, Which may sound ok But mess with one once, And you surely will pay. Their diet is valid, Berries, leaves, nuts, They also eat fish, To fatten their guts. In winter they hasten, To dens where they sleep, You could pass right beside one And won’t hear a peep. Swimmers and runners, They do it so well, If you get to escape one, What a story you’ll tell. Love them or loathe them, You have to admit, How regal, how noble How incredibly fit. 79
