Will the inflation relief cap be converted into votes? According to sources, the Congress conducted the survey at the level of in-charges, stresses that the benefits from the relief camps are showing inclination towards the ruling party. If the survey is accurate then the model of development can be a hit. A shocking fact has also come to the fore. There are 70 seats where Congress does not have qualified faces yet! Supremacy of the Constitution and International obligations...

Paving the Way for Inclusivity and Equality in Same-Sex Marriage

Ad. Abhishek Singh

The writer is a Research Scholar

REVOLVING CHALLENGES

The opposition to same-sex marriage in India to constitutional supremacy, international obligations and religious perspectives. Concerns related to constitutional interpretation, societal impact, parental rights, and religious liberty are prominent among opponents. Religious perspectives, particularly from Christianity and Islam, highlight traditional interpretations of scriptures and the potential clash with cultural norms. Critics express concerns about the redefinition of marriage, parental rights, and the broader impact on society. While recognizing and understanding the opposing viewpoints is essential, it is important to recognize that constitutional supremacy, human rights, and the evolving societal understanding of equality and non-discrimination are crucial aspects of a democratic and inclusive society

The recognition of same-sex marriage is a critical issue that requires a comprehensive examination of constitutional supremacy, personal laws, and the rights of individuals. In India, a diverse and pluralistic society, the question of legalizing samesex marriage necessitates a careful analysis of constitutional principles and the need for reform in personal laws. This essay delves into the implications of recognizing samesex marriage in India, emphasizing the supremacy of the Constitution, the imperative for changes in personal laws, and the delicate balance between religious beliefs and individual rights. In recent years there has been growing global conversation regarding the recognition of same sex marriage and the protection of LGBTQ+ rights. While international laws and principles are not directly enforceable in India’s domestic legal system, They can be used as persuasive arguments in legal and policy discussions within the country, influencing the development of laws and policies at national level. While the constitution of India provides a solid foundation for equality and non discrimination, It is essential to navigate the complexities that arise when reconciling religious views with the constitutional principles of Justice, liberty and Equality. India may not currently recognize same sex marriage, legal amendments and inclusive dialogue can play a significant role in addressing the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals with in these religious communities, ensuring their equal treatment under the law while respecting religious sensitivities.

Supremacy of the Constituion

The Constitution of India serves as the fundamental law of the land, providing a framework for governance, fundamental rights and the promotion of social justice. It upholds the principles of equality before laws, non discrimination and individual freedoms. The Constituion places the rights and duties and well being of its

citizens at the fore front, setting the stage for progress and inclusivity.

International laws and India’s obligations

As a member of the global society. India is bound by various international human rights treaties and conventions that promote equality and non discrimination. Although specific obligations may vary depending on the treaties ratified, several international instruments support the recognition of same sex marriage, including:

Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR)

The UDHR sets forth fundamental human rights standards and proclaims the principle of equity and non discrimination.

Internationl Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR)

India is signatory to the ICCPR, which upholds the right to equality before the law, freedom from discrimination, and the right to marry and found a family. These provisions can be interpreted to support the rights

Today’s column delves into the implications of recognizing same-sex marriage in India, emphasizing the supremacy of the Constitution, the imperative for changes in personal laws, and the delicate balance between religious beliefs and individual rights. In recent years there has been growing global conversation regarding the recognition of same sex marriage and the protection of LGBTQ+ rights

of same sex couples to marry and enjoy equal legal recognition and benefits.

Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women ( CEDAW)

Recognition by Supreme Court

These judgments have set important precedents for the protection & promotion of LGBT+ rights in India, emphasizing equality, non-discrimination, right to live with dignity.

Transgender Rights

In 2014, the Supreme Court of

India passed a significant judgment in the case of NALSA v. Union of India. The court recognized transgender people as a third gender and upheld their rights to self-identification. It recognized rights of transgender individuals to equality, non-discrimination, and protection under various provisions of Indian Constitution.

The NALSA judgment further affirmed the rights of transgender individuals to access healthcare, education, and employment opportunities without facing discrimination.

Section 377 of the IPC

Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code criminalized “unnatural offenses” and was used to target consensual same-sex relationships. In 2018, the Supreme Court of India delivered a landmark judgment in Navtej Singh Johar v. Union of India, declaring Section 377 unconstitutional to the extent that it applied to consensual sexual acts between adults, including same-sex relationships.

Cricket legends slam Team India for losing WTC Final

Former Indian cricketers slammed India’s batting after a disappointing show in Sunday’s World Test Championship final against Australia.

Things went wrong for the Rohit Sharma-led side right from the beginning. India won the toss and asked Australia to bat first looking at the overcast conditions, not worrying about the fickle English weather that changes so quickly.

And then the team selection. The top-ranked spinner in the world, the bowler who has the most wickets in the WTC cycle, Ravichandran Ashwin, was not selected in the playing XI, even though there were five left-handers in the Aussie batting line-up.

Kohli talks so much about how to win a match you need a long innings. How are you going to do that if you play a ball so far outside the off stump?

The batting was in shambles today. It was just ridiculous what we saw. I mean, come on!

New York: At least 13 people were shot, stabbed or hit by cars when chaos broke out among hundreds of people gathered in Syracuse, New York, early Sunday morning, according to police. Four people were shot and injured, five suffered lacerations and four were hit by cars, Syracuse Police Lt. Matthew Malinowski said in a news release. All are expected to survive. Police responded to a report of shots fired around 12:22 a.m. and found hundreds of people gathered near the intersection of Davis Street and Massena Street, Malinowski said.

There is no further threat to the public, Annapolis police said at the scene and online.

The stockpile of operational nuclear weapons rose in 2022, a leading conflict think-tank said on Monday, as it warned that the world was entering a dangerous phase. The estimated number of warheads in military stockpiles for potential use rose by 86 to 9,576, the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) said, continuing a trend seen in the past few years. Dan Smith, Sipri director said that “those numbers are beginning to tick up”, albeit that they remain far below the 70,000-plus amassed during the 1980s. Russia and the United States of America together possess almost 90% of all the world’s nuclear weapons.

The Australian players were also fined 80 per cent of their fees for maintaining a slow over rate during the marqueeclash, which they won by 209 run in London on Sunday.

EXPANSION OF NADDA TEAM

A discussion is going on regarding new appointment of CS Usha Sharma. Word is that, she could be appointed to the post of RERA Chairman after retirement. Notably, former CS NC Goyal was appointed as RERA Chairman and his tenure ended on April 19. After this, UDH did not immediately start the process to appoint a new Chairman. However after a month long wait, a release has been issued by UDH for applications for the post of RERA Chairman. The last date for application is July 5 and Chief Secretary Usha Sharma is retiring on June 30. In such a situation, there is speculation that the recruitment process started late, so that application can be given on behalf of Usha Sharma for the post of RERA Chairman. However, how significant these speculations and discussions are, only time will tell.

The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) which is going through a tough time, has got a major relief. Now RSRTC will not have to make a payment of about one hundred crore rupees to a transport company from Ahmedabad. The Commercial Court number 4 in Jaipur, through its recent order, accepted roadways’ appeal and gave the decision. The decision was given by Justice Amit Kumar Kadvasara.

Prior to this, the court had attached Roadways properties in 2022, for not making payment towards the company. What was serious was the point that the court had ordered to attach the state’s transport department as well! This one of a kind order shook the government.

At that time, in the year 2021-22, Sandeep Verma was CMD of Roadways and then official had given a written complaint to the Chief Secretary, against the

public prosecutors for lacunae and colluding with the opposite party. Verma’s step had become a major issue of discussion in the state bureaucracy as Verma had even requested that these lawyers should be removed.

In the year 2022 itself, when Sandeep Verma was still CMD, the Roadways had appealed against the attachment order in Commercial Court 4. Although Verma was transferred in October 2022, but the decision on the appeal has been announced now and Verma, who is now serving as ACS, Science and Technology, is extremely elated with the decision as ‘his efforts have been successful and roadways has got a major relief’.

It should be noted that roadways is in a loss of 6100 crore rupees and this loss is increasing to the tune of four hundred crore rupees per month.

Ten thousand posts, out of the total twenty two thousand approved, are still lying vacant. The Roadways administration had demanded an approval from the government for recruitment of 5200 new posts, which has not been received till now. A total of 2915 buses are currently plying in RSRTC as against the total of five thousand and among these too, 1522 buses have exceeded their term.

On the other hand the issue of purchase of new buses is in doldrums.

MD Nathmal Didel’s team had prepared a tender document last month and owing to the major shortfalls in the document, it has been declined. Sources reveal that there is a major doubt if the new buses will even by bought in the current government’s tenure, because the date for model code of conduct is round the corner.

Hip-hop is far more than just a musical genre, a dancing style, or a fleeting fashion statement. Originating from the concrete jungle of the Bronx in New York City, hip-hop emerged as a powerful force, offering an escape from the harsh realities. Hip-hop became a vehicle for self-expression, resilience, and social change. The birth of hip-hop in the 1970s marked a pivotal moment for fashion which reflected it’s distinctive style and attitude, featuring bomber jackets, tracksuits, and sneakers. Puma, Chuck Taylors, and ProKeds dominated the footwear scene, becoming synonymous with the hip-hop aesthetic. The popularity of baggy apparel arose from the practicality of ill-fitting hand-me-downs that were prevalent in inner-city neighbourhoods. Each individual put their own spin on the style, infusing it with their personality and creativity. Drugs that melt away pounds still present more questions

City First cityfirst@firstindia.co.in

In the past five years, several new drugs have been brought to market that could lead to a profound, if not revolutionary, change in how healthcare providers – and the public – view weight loss.

Three drugs in particular – sold under the brand names Wegovy, Ozempic and Mounjaro – have shown remarkable effects on weight loss in clinical trials.

While Wegovy is approved by the Food and Drug Administration for weight loss, the other two medications are only approved as a treatment for Type 2 diabetes, though they do also contribute to significant weight loss. This has led to increased demand for these drugs, causing a shortage of Ozempic and Mounjaro in early 2023 that threatened the availability of these drugs for diabetes patients.

Globally, more than 650 million people are obese, and by 2030, an estimated 1 billion adults will be obese. This makes obesity the most prevalent chronic disease in the world.

As an exercise science scholar, I have spent more than 15 years studying the effects of diet and exercise on the human body, primarily focused on body composition changes such as gaining skeletal muscle or losing body fat, or both. In my lectures, I present data on the detrimental impacts on the personal health of being overweight or obese. Then I show that, aside from surgical intervention, the best way to lower body fat is by starting an exercise program and improving dietary habits.

These new drugs have now altered what I teach in the classroom, and as a researcher, I believe they raise many questions about the current approach to weight management and health. While these medications hold promise, they are not wonder drugs. In my view, they warrant much more research before they become the basis for a new weight management protocol.

HOW THESE DRUGS WORK

Ozempic and Mounjaro are FDAapproved for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes, which affects more than 37 million people in the U.S. On top of that, nearly 100 million people are considered prediabetic, meaning that together over 40% of the U.S. population suffers from an inability to properly manage blood sugar.

Obesity and Type 2 diabetes are closely related conditions, so much so that some experts are now call-

ing the two conditions “diabesity.”

These dire figures are what prompted pharmaceutical companies to search for new weight loss treatments.

Type 2 diabetes is a condition in which your body no longer responds to the hormone insulin, which in healthy people regulates glucose, or sugar, levels in the blood. Prolonged elevated blood sugar, if left untreated, can lead to heart disease, vision loss and even death.

Wegovy and Ozempic are a class of drugs known as Semaglutide. Since people with Type 2 diabetes are unable to properly manage blood sugar, injections with this class of drug help the body release the proper amount of insulin after eating by mimicking a naturally occurring hormone called GLP-1.

At the same time, Semaglutides also reduce the release of the hormone glucagon, which works the opposite of insulin to increase blood sugar. In non-diabetics, these two hormones work together to maintain normal blood sugar levels. But since this mechanism is not functioning properly in diabetics, which leads to high blood sugar, Semaglutides help to control blood sugar and also reduce appetite.

For this reason, Ozempic received approval from the FDA in 2017 as a treatment for Type 2 diabetes. But during the clinical trials for Type 2 diabetes, pharmaceutical companies quickly recognized Ozempic’s potential as a weight loss tool.

This led to the release of a new drug, Wegovy, which has a higher dose of semaglutide. A 2021 study showed that once-weekly injec-

tions of Wegovy over 68 weeks resulted in about a 15% loss of body weight in adult participants with obesity.

The other novel medication in the news lately, Mounjaro, acts like a Semaglutide, stimulating GLP-1, but it also mimics a second hormone called glucose-dependent

insulinotropic polypeptide. This dual-hormone action works to not only lower blood sugar levels and increase insulin sensitivity but also to slow the digestive system and decrease appetite.

analyzing the data from a clinical trial program focused on using Semaglutide treatments in people with obesity, which included more than 4,000 patients. Over 80% of participants lost more than 5% of their body weight, with the most common side effects being nausea, diarrhoea, vomiting and constipation.

This data on effectiveness and efficacy led the FDA to officially approve Wegovy as a weight loss drug in the summer of 2021. The huge demand that ensued led to the recent shortages of Wegovy, forcing many physicians to look for other options. That’s when Ozempic and Mounjaro entered the picture as off-label weight loss medications, even though they are only FDA-approved to treat Type 2 diabetes.

In April 2023, the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly released the results of the second phase 3 clinical trial of Mounjaro. The results were, quite frankly, amazing:

Compared to a placebo, the 938 obese or overweight adults with Type 2 diabetes lost more than 34 pounds, or roughly 15% of their body weight, with no required fitness and nutrition program.

This most recent study tracked with the first clinical trial of Mounjaro, published in July 2022, that resulted in more than a 20% reduction in body weight in 2,539 adults. Similar to Wegovy and Ozempic, Mounjaro’s most commonly reported side effects are general gastrointestinal distress such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

obese and another 30% are overweight, meaning that 7 in 10 adults need to lose weight. The World Health Organization estimates that, based on a 2017 global burden of disease study, more than 4 million people across the world are dying every year due to being overweight or obese, a trend that is also growing rapidly in children.

The WHO defines obesity as when an adult or child has a body mass index, or BMI, over 30; a BMI over 25 is considered overweight. In children, doctors often rely on percentiles, rather than an absolute number.

BMI is calculated by taking a person’s weight and dividing it by the square of their height – a technique that isn’t the most accurate for assessing body composition. But it is valuable for classifying millions of people where more accurate techniques such as skinfold measurements are not feasible.

THE AGE-OLD BENEFITS OF EXERCISE AND A HEALTHY DIET

Still, these new drugs that can aid in weight loss present a dilemma for doctors and other health care providers: Where do they fit in with the decadeslong gospel of healthy eating and increasing physical activity?

Traditionally the most effective mechanism for weight loss has been a twofold lifestyle intervention: dietary modification resulting in an overall caloric deficit combined with 250 minutes or more of moderate-intensity exercise per week.

Research has long since established that being physically active improves mental health, including memory, depressive symptoms and mood, as well as immune function and bone health. Being active also reduces the risks of developing conditions like heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and some cancers.

But given that more than twothirds of the U.S. adult population is now overweight or obese, Americans are not meeting these guidelines. The most recent data shows that only a quarter of adults are getting the necessary aerobic and muscle-strengthening activity each week. For all these reasons, many clinical recommendations now suggest the use of anti-obesity medications as a primary means of addressing overweight and obesity. The healthcare field now has a new strategy for meaningful weight loss, but there are still more questions than answers.
