Understanding Employee Boredom in the Office: Factors and Solution

VARIATION OR CHALLENGE

Doing the same thing over and over again without any opportunity for creativity or growth can make work feel dull and uninspiring

Without opportunities to learn and grow, employees may feel unchallenged and unfulfilled, leading to boredom and a lack of motivation

When skills and interests do not align with the tasks assigned, employees may struggle to find meaning or fulfillment in their work

mployees can get bored in the office for a variety of reasons, ranging from the nature of their work to the overall work environment. Here are several key factors that can contribute to employees feeling bored:

REPETITIVE AND MONOTONOUS TASKS

When employees are assigned repetitive tasks that offer little variation or challenge, it can lead to a sense of monotony and boredom. Doing the same thing over and over again without any opportunity for creativity or growth can make work feel dull and uninspiring.

LACK OF ENGAGEMENT AND STIMULATION

If the work itself lacks engagement and fails to provide intellectual or creative stimulation, employees may struggle to stay interested. Tasks that do not require much mental effort or fail to provide a sense of accomplishment can contribute to a feeling of boredom.

LIMITED AUTONOMY AND DECISIONMAKING AUTHORITY

When employees are not given the opportunity to make decisions or have input in their work processes, it can lead to a sense of disengagement. Without a sense of control or ownership over their work, employees may feel detached and un-

interested, leading to boredom.

LACK OF GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES

Boredom can arise when employees feel stagnant in their roles and see no potential for advancement or skill development. Without opportunities to learn and grow, employees may feel unchallenged and unfulfilled, leading to boredom and a lack of motivation.

NEGATIVE WORK ENVIRONMENT

A negative work environment can significantly contribute to employee boredom. Factors such as poor relationships with colleagues, ineffective communication, or a lack of support from supervisors can create a sense of dissatisfaction and disengagement. When employees

out the motivation to excel. A lack of stimulating and meaningful work can lead to a sense of stagnation and boredom.

INEFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION AND FEEDBACK

When employees do not receive clear communication or constructive feedback from their supervisors, it can lead to a sense of confusion and disengagement. Without proper guidance and support, employees may feel unsure about their performance and become bored as a result.

WORK-LIFE IMBALANCE

If employees are consistently overworked or have an unhealthy work-life balance, it can lead to burnout and bore-

dom. When there is no time for relaxation, hobbies, or personal activities outside of work, employees may feel exhausted and disengaged. To combat employee boredom, organizations can consider implementing various strategies. These include providing opportunities for skill development and growth, fostering a positive work environment, encouraging autonomy and decision-making, offering diverse and challenging projects, promoting effective communication and feedback, and promoting a healthy work-life balance. n the invitation of US President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in the US next week. All eyes are now on the next chapter in the bilateral relations between the two countries and the message that will be sent out of Washington.

Indian Ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday (local time) said that during PM Modi’s upcom-

ing state visit to the US, the “next level of the partnership will be visible”. “You will see the personal chemistry reflected in a number of interactions. In fact, this will show perhaps the maximum interaction between Prime Minister Modi and the President of the United States.”

As cabinet members and senior officials are looking into the nuts and bolts of the state visit’s “outcomes” and are making sure New Delhi and Washington are moving in the right direction,

Sandhu highlighted the significance of India-US partnership in the global context in various spheres

such as trade, defence and strategic cooperation, technology, higher education and clean energy.

“The underlying aspect is going to be much more strategic understanding,” Sandhu said. Experts stress on how Washington is working to deepen ties with the world’s largest democracy, forging military and industrial links with India as a key counterweight to China’s dominance, even as the two democracies differ on how to deal with Russia’s Ukraine invasion. And this visit would further nail in stronger ties as the US looks to blunt China’s growing assertiveness in the region.

“Fifteen years ago, we just wouldn’t have thought about it. But today, we are talking about the stuff which was unimaginable...now you’re talking about critical and emerging technologies, and data and AI that include semiconductors, quantum 5G, and 6G telecom sector. Technology also reflects trust and confidence between the two sides. And I think this aspect is the one which is going to really show the deepening of our relationship,” the top Indian envoy noted.

ment of airports in Rajasthan and making them suitable from tourism point of view.

In this series, the Central government has started the bidding process to start more air flights from Bikaner and Kishangarh airports in Raj and allow more airlines to operate flights from here. This process will continue till July 15 & it is expected that by August 15, companies will come forward to start more flights from these two airports & new flights will start.

The CM has reduced air traffic fuel to 2% in his budget speech, due to which aviation firms are getting attracted towards Raj, Srivastava said.

It is a matter of pleasure that now many airlines have shown interest in operating flights from SGNR, for this a joint inspection team of AAI & concerned officials of State Govt will be sent there for inspection.

Raj’s ‘Pandavas’ become pride of State bureaucracy, serving ‘Bharat’!

t is time for the State bureaucracy to be elated and excited as the Rajasthan cadre officers are holding the State bureaucracy’s ‘flag’ high in the Central Government. After a long time, five of our bureaucrats are positioned on the top post of the‘Secretary.’ These officials are V Srinivas, Rohit Kumar Singh, Sanjay Malhotra, Sudhansh Pant and Rajat Kumar Mishra. Similarly, half a dozen IAS are currently posted as Additional Secretaries and four as Joint Secretary.

It is first of its kind development in recent years

that, at one time, five of our officers are posted as Secretary. The 1989 batch IAS V Srinivas went on central deputation, for the second time, in the year 2018. After four years, he was promoted, in January 2022, and posted as Secretary in Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances Department.

Actually, Srinivas’s work ethic revolves around renovation and reforms. Prior to going to Delhi, when he was serving in the State, he undertook several innovative and improvement related works in Revenue Board. He is an erudite scholar and a very competent officer.

Another officer of 1989 batch, Rohit Kumar Singh, is posted as Secre-

tary, Department of Consumer Affairs, on which he was posted in December 2021. When he went on deputation to the Central Government for the first time, in April 2012, he served for a long period of six years as Joint Secretary in Ministry of Road Transport. He is set to retire after nine months from now i.e. in March 2024.

For first time in recent history, five Raj cadre IAS posted as Secretary in Central Government with hopes of two making it to coveted post of Cabinet Secretary in future!

Amongst all officers, Sanjay Malhotra is considered to be the ‘Rising Sun.’ He went into the Ministry of Power on deputation in January 2020 as Additional Sec-

retary and in two years, he proved his capabilities and was promoted to the post of Secretary and taken in the Finance Ministry, which is an extremely important post-

ing in the Central Government. Then in October 2022, he received another ‘jump’ and was made Revenue Secretary in Finance Ministry. It is well known that this position at the Centre, is considered to be among the top half a dozen positions. There are five years left to Sanjay Malhotra’s retirement and it is possible that he may

ascend to the high chair of Cabinet Secretary and the State bureaucracy is desperately waiting for that time!

The 1991 batch IAS Sudhansh Pant has a long experience of six years of working in Health Department & keeping this in mind, the Central Government handed him the responsibility of Secretary, Health Department through its appointment list issued on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, an interesting coincidence has occurred with IAS Rajat Kumar Mishra. This 1992 batch, impressive and result- oriented officer was empanelled for the post of Secretary merely ten days back and soon after he was promoted and ap-

pointed as Secretary. Such developments have happened only a handful of times in the past. Rajat is now appointed as Secretary, Ministry of Fertilizers. He too has five years of service left before his retirement and thus, he too is being considered a ‘dark horse’.

Thus, our five Secretaries are currently holding important responsibilities in the Union Government and are steadily heading towards handling more important assignments. It is worth noting that two Rajasthan cadre officers, who are currently serving as Additional Secretary, Tanmay Kumar and Alok, may also become Secretary soon!

Suraiya

The one & only

Circa: 1948

Suraiya Jamal Sheik was a stunning beauty, great actress & singer, from the Bombay orthodox elite, a prodigy. Dharamdev Pishorimal

Ananda Star actor and a man so staggeringly handsome that a Court had to advise him not to wear black coloured clothes as they further sharpened his looks!! They feared that girls might jump off buildings to catch a glimpse of him.

These two phenomena met at a time when their communities were standing on opposing cliffs and looking down at a deep abyss of hatred, something India hadn't experienced before! But when these two souls looked up and saw each other, they eternalised Love!! Their instant Love was blind enough to crash thru those social barricades and communal polarization. It stripped their names down to mononyms of Suraiya & Devanand. Their family names carried the unclaimed baggage of heritage, society, religion and tribal egos. Similar Love legends of the past like Romeo/Juliet, Heer/Ranjha, Sohni/Mahiwal etc stood testimony to this Being from a highly Orthodox Muslim family, Suraiya was discouraged and often prevented from meeting the Hindu Devanand.

However, smitten by Suraiya, he was at her feet romantically and spiritually. Just as he felt that her feet were a reflection of her strength of character & burning sensuality, he idolised her as a goddess of love and craved a place at her feet.

Suraiya, truly possessing the strength that Devanand sensed, never compromised on her love for him and stayed unmarried till her death in 2004 at age 75. On the bleeding quest of Suraiya, her mother had agreed to one last secret meeting with Devanand on a dark rooftop. Suraiya literally poured her soul into him and, as the story goes, got so drained of spirit & jest at this painful parting that she was never the Suraiya of yore. She did continue to dominate the film world with her sheer looks & prodigious talent, but the fire had got snuffed out. Very soon the other rising stars like Madhubala & Nargis started to eclipse this Moon.

Even though Devanand often chided her for not having the courage to marry him, she would not tell him about the danger to his life if she did. She knew that her maternal grandmother & uncle would not have hesitated to have him killed if they tied the knot. This ripping dilemma crushed her for most of her life after Devanand had touched every iota of her being. He, on his part, held her in such divine esteem that he did not even attend her burial, knowing that the press & public would craft innuendos to sully her purity.

I recited above the "Poem of Love" that Suraiya was, as her birthday on June 15, Thursday cajoled me to say something!!

The actress recalled her one year of Myositis, along with professional failures, and how life doesn't go like how we want and that's okay.

Samantha shared a few photos from the

church and wrote, "It’s been one year since the diagnosis. A year of forced new normal. Non binary pronouns

Demi Lovato has recently opened up about how she changed her pronouns to they/them, only to go back to she/her again. The singer explained how she got “tired” of having to explain the meaning behind the pronouns of her choice. She also spoke about how she was conditioned to select woman when given the option to select from male or female on government documents. While talking to GQ Hpye Spain, Demi Lovato confessed that the reason she does not use ‘they/them’ anymore is that she got sick of explaining the reason behind it over and over again. The singer explained, “I constantly had to educate people and explain why I identified with those pronouns. It was absolutely exhausting.” She added, “I just got tired. But for that very reason, I know that it is important to continue spreading the word.”
