BRACING FOR A WILD RIDE!

Cyclone Biparjoy, which intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm on Sunday, is currently about 500-600 km away from Mumbai coast and about 380 kilometres south south-west of Devbhumi Dwarka in Gujarat, the IMD report said on Monday.

Currently over eastcentral Arabian Sea, Biparjoy moved northwards with a speed of 7 kmph till Monday evening. The effects of Biparjoy were evident as strong winds and high tidal waves were witnessed on Gujarat coast and in Mumbai. “It is very likely to move nearly northward till tomorrow morning, then move north-NEwards and cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi and Karachi near Jakhau Port by June 15 as severe cyclonic storm with max sustained wind speed of 125-135 kmph gusting to 150 kph,” IMD said. NCMC reviewed the preparedness of the Gujarat government and central agencies for the impending Cyclone Biparjoy and assured the state of all help. A total of 21,000 boats have been parked so far and a list of all vulnerable villages has been prepared for the purpose of evacuation, it said.

NDRF, SDRF TEAMS DEPLOYED; MORE THAN 10,000 PEOPLE RELOCATED TO SAFE HOUSES

PM Narendra Modi on Monday held a review meeting as cyclone Biparjoy intensified into an “extremely severe cyclonic storm”. PM, after being briefed about efforts undertaken to mitigate impact of cyclone, directed officials to take every possible measure to ensure that people living in vulnerable locations are safely evacuated. Modi asked officials for maintenance of all essential services with preparedness for their immediate restoration in event of damages.

 Four persons are feared drowned and two were rescued after a group of people ventured into the rough seas at Juhu in Mumbai on Monday, a civic official said.

 The IMD has advised fishermen not to venture into the seas off the coast of Gujarat, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Lakshadweep.
