ANOTHER LOSS IN ICC FINAL Urgent Need for Fresh Ideas, New Mindset

ANOTHER DEFEAT...

Another final, another defeat and Team India’s record in the knockouts at ICC events now reads 8-0 since 2013. While the final result may not reflect it, India was beaten comprehensively by Australia in the WTC final by 209 runs

As T20 game has moved the focus from defence to aggression, and cricketers are now more assured of their attacking game, most experts believe it will be better for Indian batsmen to usher in a new batting.

Another final, another defeat and Team India’s record in the knockouts at ICC events now reads 8-0 since 2013. While the final result may not reflect it, India was beaten comprehensively by Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final by 209 runs. At no point in the match was India ahead of the Aussies, clearly highlighting the vast difference in the approach of the two teams. It’s happened plenty of times in the past decade that the star-studded Indian line-up comes apart at crucial moments – and fritters away the hard work done over a period of time.

NATION WANTS TO KNOW...

Questions are mounting which need answers from the Indian camp. But for those to be answered there needs to be a clear understanding of what the problem areas really are. Terrible team selection has been a constant irritation with Indian cricket over the past few years. During the 2021 WTC final, India picked both Ravindra Jadeja and Ravi Ashwin when the conditions warranted the need for another fast bowler. This time, it was the other way round as Ashwin was dropped to accommodate an extra pacer – but that at a time when he is the number 1 ranked bowler in the ICC rankings. Clearly, the Indian team management, earlier during Kohli’s captaincy and now under Rohit, is misreading conditions and not selecting their best team combination.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

When the weather is overcast, anyone can tell you that the conditions are conducive to fast bowling. But India’s knowledgeable think tank needs to remember that ultimately a team needs to pick its best

WHAT INDIA NEEDS...

For the moment, there are more questions than answers confronting BCCI and Team India. More than anything else, what India needs urgently is a mindset change and the courage to ring in major, even drastic, change. As the old saying goes, ‘Fortune favours the brave’ but whether the BCCI and Team India are ready to take crucial decisions is the key question for a brighter future.

bowlers – and surely the World’s No 1 ranked bowler can’t be asked to sit out of crucial encounters simply because he is not a seamer but a spinner!

REASON FOR INDIA’S FAILURES

Another reason for India’s failures is that Indian batsmen

have been struggling under pressure in such knockout matches. Barring the 2016, T20 World Cup semi-final that India lost to West Indies where India smashed a total of 192, the batters have fared poorly in crunch situations. It’s high time for Indian batsmen to take a leaf out of the English team’s

style of play and adapt to ‘Bazzball’ cricket. As the T20 game has moved the focus from defence to aggression, and cricketers are now more assured of their attacking game, most experts believe it will be better for Indian batsmen to usher in a new era of batting with their aggressive style of play in all formats of the game - including in Test cricket.

TALK ABOUT TRANSITION MUST

After the defeat in the WTC final, talk about transition for the next cycle is inevitable. With several players in the side on the wrong side of 30, the team sure needs to take some tough selection calls. After the WTC defeat in 2021, a similar chatter had begun but the only major player dropped was Wriddhiman Saha. So, the big question is whether the aging war horses will now make way for new and fresh players like Abhimanyu Easwaran, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Umran Malik and Arshdeep

Singh? And will they get a fair chance to showcase their talents and will they be given a long rope to hone their skills?

LESSON TO BE LEARNT

The other big lesson that needs to be imbibed is that BCCI and selectors need to focus not so much on ‘individuals’ but on building an entire team. Despite the money and the glamour surrounding the Big Names, it’s a valid question that some experts have raised as to when will Team India start putting focus on the team and not on a few individuals? This was also recently pointed out by Gautam Gambhir in an interview where he blamed the media and the fans saying that our nation is obsessed with individuals rather than a collective effort which has become a big reason for India’s lack of success at big events. If this tendency is not rectified on priority, we may end up with more of the same goof ups and failures!

UPCOMING ODI WORLD CUP

But before the next WTC cycle, we have the upcoming ODI World Cup that India will be hosting in October-November this year. Can India triumph on home soil? Does Team India have the will and firepower to combat England, Australia and New Zealand who all play an aggressive and fearless brand of cricket?

For the moment, there are more questions than answers confronting BCCI and Team India. More than anything else, what India needs urgently is a mindset change and the courage to ring in major, even drastic, change. As the old saying goes, ‘Fortune favours the brave’ but whether the BCCI and Team India are ready to take crucial decisions is the key question for a brighter future.

initiatives and protocols adopted by the airport.

In May 2023, Airport played host to approximately 453786 lakh passengers, which is 26% higher than the number in May 2022 & 11% higher than the number in May 2019. The numbers clearly indicate that Jaipur Airport has gone way ahead of the

pre-covid passenger traffic. As compared to the previous month April 2023, Passenger traffic surged by 6% in May. A total of 4,28,531 pax travelled through Jaipur airport in April. Domestic passenger traffic represented around 92% of the overall passenger movement during the month.

Deliberate on global food security: PM Modi

Modi says the Agri sector is facing several challenges across the globe

First India Bureau

Hyderabad

Observing that the agriculture sector is facing several challenges globally, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday urged the G20 Agriculture Ministers Meeting to deliberate on how to undertake collective action for achieving global food security.

In a video message to

the meeting currently underway in Hyderabad, PM Modi spoke about the challenges being faced by the agriculture sector and said the supply chain disruptions

caused by the pandemic have been worsened by the impact of geopolitical tensions.

Climate change is causing extreme weather events more and more

frequently while these challenges are felt most by the Global South, the Prime Minister said.

“I urge you to deliberate on how to undertake collective action to achieve global food security. We must find ways to build sustainable and inclusive food systems focussed on marginal farmers. We must find ways to strengthen global fertiliser supply chains,” he said.

At the same time, agricultural practices for better soil health, crop health and yield should be adopted, he added.

PM MODI DIRECTS HIGHWAY AUTHORITIES TO FOCUS ON QUALITY & SAFEETY ASPECTS

New Delhi: PM Narendra Modi has directed the highway owning agencies to focus more on quality of work and “safety” aspects of the projects. He made these remarks while chairing a meeting on the infrastructure sector. The remarks came a day after a span between two pillars of an under-construction flyover in New Delhi, a part of the upcoming Dwarka Expressway, collapsed killing the driver of an earthmover. In recent months, there have been instances of portions of under construction bridges and flyovers collapsing. The officials said that the highway owning agencies, including NHAI, are putting greater focus on safety at construction sites amid indications that there is a rush to complete projects in time. Sources said while the government agencies have taken punitive steps such as blacklisting of construction companies and supervision engineers, so far any responsibility of officers concerned has hardly been fixed.

Nehru Museum issue: Cong hits out at Govt

PTI

New Delhi

The Congress on Friday hit out at the government over renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society here as Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society, calling it a “petty act” and asserting that legacies don’t get erased by renaming buildings.

Nearly a year after the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya was inaugurated on the premises of the Teen Murti Bhavan, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library Society has been renamed as Prime Ministers’ Museum and Library Society. Cong chief Kharge condemned the government.

BJP REPLIES TO CONG ON MUSEUM ISSUE

The BJP on Friday hit back at Congress over its remarks on the renaming of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library, saying the party does not hesitate to insult even its own leaders who served as prime minister of the country. This came after Congress lashed out at the government over renaming of the museum here.

SN Singh’s revival via West Bengal?

It seems that BJP is counting highly on senior leader Siddharth Nath Singh who has gained ‘entry’, again, in West Bengal! Singh is counted among the veteran leaders of UP and has been handed responsibility of five important parliamentary seats in Bengal, with other leaders including Smriti Irani and Jyotiraditya Scindia. Even before this, Siddharth Nath Singh had played the role of co-incharge in WB, but he was removed from the post after being out of power in UP.

ANOTHER TEST FOR OPPOSITION UNITY?

The path of Opposition unity will throw more hurdles before united Opposition and now clouds of crisis hover on Opposition unity over seat sharing! Word is that veterans, including Kejriwal and Mamata Banerjee, will gather in Opposition unity convention, but tussle over seat sharing has already started. Opposition parties are already considering giving only 1 seat to Kejriwal out of 7 LS seats in Delhi and on the other hand Cong wants 3/4 seats formula in Punjab as it is not in favor of giving up seat after Karnataka win.

Disappointed with the behaviour of the party MPs, JP Nadda on late Thursday evening held meeting with the party MPs virtually and hauled up the non-performing lawmakers.

He said the claim that NCERT has removed Periodic Table and Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution from science textbooks is being reported recently by media, which is factually incorrect and misleading. Education is a dynamic process that keeps on changing and enriching over time to meet the needs of society. Regular review, revision, reorganization, and appropriate changes in the curriculum of school and higher education are

usual and essential steps to keep it updated. In National Education Policy 2020, in Section 4.1 on restructuring of school curriculum, it is clearly mentioned that ‘the curricular and pedagogical structure of school education will be reconfigured to make it responsive and relevant to the developmental needs and interests of learners at different stages of their development, corresponding to their age group and interests’.

Unruly behaviour, disruptions lower dignity of Houses: Birla

PTI Mumbai

Voicing concern over disruptions in assemblies and Parliament, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Friday said it was important to find solutions to problems through dialogue and discussion to uphold people’s trust in democratic institutions.

Inaugurating the first National Legislators’ Conference here, Birla said the declining number of sittings of assemblies and Parliament, increasing indiscipline among members and lowering the dignity of the House have always been matters of concern for the presiding officers.

“There can be differ-

ences of opinion as legislators belong to different political parties, but not discussing laws, issues and policies does not augur well for democracy,” Birla said.

Birla said legislators should maintain high standards of discipline and decency as indecent

Jaishankar to contest Lok

Will all Cabinet ministers contest the Lok Sabha polls? BJP top leadership is considering this issue and if consensus is reached on this issue, then from where will Jaishankar contest?

Because Jaishankar will also have to contest the polls under this formula. Jaishankar can contest from any seat in Tamil Nadu or Kerala and thus BJP leaders are looking for a suitable seat for Jaishankar.

Highlighting the achievements of the state govt, Rathore said that the Congress govt pre-

sented a separate budget for farmers, increased the grant for cow shelters while BJP only does politics in the name of cows and Hindus.

The Rajasthan government has issued a clarification for giving relief in lease amount. As per the clarification, lease amount will be taken according to allotment rate or 110 percent or reserved rate, whichever less, in the cases of plots in colonies settled on government lands, compensation against acquisition etc.

A notification in this regard was issued on January 18 for cases in which the allotment was done

before this date. It will also be applicable in the cases where the lease amount has not been deposited before this date.

The government has also given relief in lease amount in land use cases.

The calculation of the lease amount will be done as per the rate of allotment. UDH-LSG issued an order in this regard.

According to this, 2.5 percent more lease amount will have to be given if lump sum lease amount is deposit. Lease amount of two years will have to be given for getting free hold patta.

‘ONE LAND ONE PATTA’ RULE TO BE FOLLOWED

“One Land One Patta” rule will now be strictly implemented in the state. CM Ashok Gehlot had expressed displeasure over land related fraud and incidents of multiple sale of the same plot fraudulently during a meeting at PHQ recently. Today, Principal Secretary Home took a meeting of the monitoring committee and directed officials to ensure that the registry of one plot is not done repeatedly by the same person. He asked the officers to update software for this.

He alleged that the govt has given benefits to only 42 thousand cattle herders by hiding actual figures. He said that in the budget 2023-24, the govt had made an announcement of compensation of Rs 40,000 on the death of cows due to the disease.

He said that as per the

govt figure, 15.67 lakh livestock got infected due to lumpy disease and the govt had accepted the death of only 76030 cattle. Rathore said that the govt should pay attention to the memorandum given by Sarpanch Sangh which says that 5.13 lakh cattle died due to the lumpy disease.

Protecting the incredible Ocean

Jennifer Weeks

cityfirst@firsindia.co.in

MINING THE SEABED POSES ECOLOGICAL RISKS

One of the ocean’s potentially most valuable resources hasn’t been tapped yet – but that could be about to change.

Scattered across large zones of the ocean floor, manganese nodules – lumps that look like cobblestones – contain rich deposits of nickel, copper, cobalt and other metals that are newly in demand for manufacturing batteries and renewable energy components.

“A fierce debate is now playing out as a Canadian company makes plans to launch the first commercial deep sea mining operation in the Pacific Ocean,”

Indiana University scholars Scott Shackelford, Christiana Ochoa, David Bosco and Kerry Krutilla warned.

Less than 10% of the deep seabed has been mapped thoroughly, and most life forms discovered there have never been seen before.

Collecting materials from the ocean floor could harm these species – for example, by burying them in sediments.

“We believe it would be wise to better understand this existing, fragile ecosystem better before rushing to mine it,” the authors concluded.

AND HARD TO DETECT

Illegal fishing – taking too many fish, or harvesting threatened species – causes economic losses estimated at US$10 billion to $25 billion annually. It also has been linked to human rights violations, such as forced labor and human trafficking. But it’s easy to conduct these activities out of sight on the high seas.

By looking at when and where fishing boats turned off their location transponders at sea, academic and nongovernment researchers showed that these silences can be an important signal.

“Vessels frequently went dark on the

high-seas edge of exclusive economic zone boundaries, which can obscure illegal fishing in unauthorized locations,” wrote Heather Welch, a researcher in ecosystem dynamics at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

Ships may also disable their transponders to avoid pirates or avoid drawing competitors to rich fishing sites, so making it illegal to turn their signals off isn’t a practical strategy. But more analysis of where boats go dark could help governments target inspections and patrols, reducing crimes at sea.

Humans rely on the ocean for many things, including food, jobs, recreation and stabilization of Earth’s climate. But although ocean resources may seem infinite, human impacts like pollution, overfishing and climate change are creating what United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called an “ocean emergency.” Climate change is pushing ocean temperatures to record levels, many fisheries are overharvested, and plastic waste is accumulating in the deep sea.

These five articles from The Conversation’s archive spotlight urgent challenges for ocean conservation, and describe what researchers are doing to devise effective responses.

A DEVASTATING INVASION IS EXPANDING

Invasive lionfish are aggressive predators, native to the Indo-Pacific Ocean, that feed on smaller reef fish. They have caused heavy damage in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico since they first appeared in the Atlantic in 1985. Now, they’ve spread south to Brazil, which has many rare endemic fish species and is behind the curve in responding.

“As one of many Brazilian scientists who warned repeatedly about a potential lionfish invasion over the past decade, I’m disheartened that my country missed the window to take

early action,” wrote Charles Darwin University marine scientist Osmar J. Luiz. “Now, however, marine researchers and local communities are stepping up.” One important control strategy was to create an interactive dashboard where anyone can report lionfish sightings. Other steps are likely to include environmental education, organized culls and genetic research to identify distinct lionfish populations and see where they’re moving. With a similar lionfish invasion underway in the Mediterranean, there’s urgent need for effective responses.

SCIENTISTS ARE DESIGNING AN ‘INTERNET OF THE OCEAN’

Just as there are unnumbered life forms in the ocean yet to be discovered, there also are many unanswered questions about its physical processes. For example, scientists know that the ocean pulls carbon from the atmosphere and transfers it to deep waters, where it can remain stored for long periods. But they don’t know how biological and chemical shifts affect this carbon cycling process.

Scientists at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts are designing a monitoring system called the Ocean Vital Signs Network that could make it possible to test strategies for storing more carbon in the ocean and tracking how well they work. They envision “a large network of moorings and sensors that provides 4D eyes on the oceans – the fourth dimension being time – that are always on, always connected to monitor these carbon cycling processes and ocean health,” wrote WHOI director Peter de

Menocal, a marine geologist and paleoclimatologist. The network would include intelligent gliders and autonomous vehicles that could collect data and then dock, repower and upload it. It also would use sensors

and acoustic transceivers to monitor dark, hidden reaches of the ocean where carbon is stored. “This network makes observation possible for making decisions that will affect future generations,” de Menocal wrote.

OCEAN PLASTIC WASTE HAS A MESSAGE FOR HUMANS

Over the past several decades, plastic pollution has become one of the world’s more widespread environmental crises. Every year, millions of tons of plastic trash end up in the ocean, killing sea creatures, smothering ecosystems and threatening human health.

Georgia State University art professor Pam Longobardi grew up in New Jersey, where her father brought home plastic trinkets from his job at the chemical company Union Carbide. Today, Longobardi collects plastic waste from

agine how Shah Rukh Khan and Yash ji must have overcome similar challenges for their iconic scenes. It was my way of recreating that magic and paying homage to them. Shah Rukh Khan and Yash Chopra ji’s films introduced me to the world of romance, and ‘Mohabbat’ is my humble creation in that same spirit.” Composed and sung by Amaal Mallik, with lyrics penned by Vayu, and directed by Krish Trivedi, ‘Mohabbat’ captures the essence of timeless romance.

TAdipurush showcases the Yuddha Kanda in Ramayana. The first shot of the film is when Ravana (Saif Ali Khan) gets the boon from Brahma that he cannot be killed on earth or in the sky, at night or in the day and the 10 heads of Ravana are shown. Lord Rama, aka Raghava (Prabhas), along with his wife Janki aka Sita (Kriti Sanon) and brother Lakshman aka Sesh (Sunny Singh) are living in the jungle after getting banished from Ayodhya for 14 years. One day, the demon Ravana (Saif Ali Khan) abducts Sita by

One more best thing to have happened to Adipurush is Saif Ali Khan. His role as Ravana and his acting skills are incredibly amazing. Saif makes the film even more fiery with his performance as Lankesh. Saif Ali Khan definitely should be given brownie points for this performance.

Sita’s character is also played well by Kriti Sanon, who had mostly played glamorous roles in her career but she fits in perfectly as Janaki, aka Sita. Devdatte Nage, the Marathi actor, breathed life

into the role of Lord Hanuman. Sunny Singh, Vatsal Sheth, and Sonal Chauhan also have put in their best for the respective characters.

visuals are involved.

Also, a few dialogues sound extremely casual and below the standards of the great characters of Ramayana. There are a few misguiding facts as one believes that Lanka was made of gold but this Lanka looks very dark.

The pushpak vimaan which was used to abduct Sita was changed into a flying beast in this film. A few shots of the film looked like they were from Hollywood films like Planet of Apes, Lord of the Rings, Game Of Thrones etc. The makers took some cinematic liberties, and a few scenes look exaggerated. The film should be watched in theatres to get the feel of what the director wishes to showcase. I feel Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan will remain in the hearts and memory of people who without any technology and limited resources, created absolute magic which even after so many years remains unmatched.
