Όσο για το βράδυ, το ενδιαφέρον μονοπωλούν τα μεζεδοπωλεία της οδού Τάκη με attraction τους πλανόδιους μουσικούς, τα παραδοσιακά γλυκοπωλεία και τα καλλιτεχνίζοντα μπαράκια, ενώ δεν λείπουν τα γειτονικά clubs και οι εναλλακτικές θεατρικές σκηνές που προσελκύουν το δικό τους κοινό!

NORTHWEST OF MONASTIRAKI SQUARE beats the heart of one of the oldest districts of Athens. The once picturesque Psirri neighbourhood that was related to the rembetiko music, with the authentic, popular meze restaurants and the old craftsmanships (leather shops, cobblers, fabric shops, etc.) has been gradually transformed into the definition of mass entertainment. Miaouli, Karaiskaki, Agion Anrgiron, Aristofanous and Aischylou are the five main streets that attract locals and visitors all day long, with Iroon Square as the starting point. The setting, with the low-rise buildings and narrow alleys is reminiscent of an island. In the morning, Psirri is characterized by the leisurely pace of an old Athenian district, with nostalgic, traditional cafés, arty shops with handmade items, old workshops and shops selling antiques where antique enthusiasts can discover unique treasures. In the nighttime, the meze restaurants on Taki Street monopolize the interest, with the street musicians, the traditional sweet shops and the arty bars taking the stage, while the neighbouring clubs and the alternative theatre stages attract their own audience!

Μάλιστα ένας από τους θαμώνες ήταν και

The first historical reference of the area was in 1687.

• During Turkish rule, it was the residence of Lord Byron, the British poet and philhellene.

• Until 1835, when Ermou Street was established, Psirri included the entire area of Monastiraki, all the way to Thissio and the border of Plaka.

Ή πρώτη ανάμνηση που έχετε από την Μαρία Κάλλας; Το 1973 όταν εργαζόμουν στο γραφείο τύπου της Πρεσβείας μας

στην Ουάσινγκτον με αφορμή τη συναυλία που έδινε με τον Giuseppe Di Stefano στο Kennedy Center. Τότε μου ζητήθηκε από την ίδια

να γράψω δύο επιστολές στα γαλλικά και μόλις την αντίκρυσα δε

θα ξεχάσω την αίσθηση που αποκόμισα. Μια γυναίκα με απέραντη

αξιοπρέπεια, τρυφερότητα και αίσθημα στοργής. Στη συνέχεια είχα την τιμή να την ξεναγήσω στα αξιοθέατα της Ουάσινγκτον.

Τι σημαίνει για εσάς το όνομά της;

Με ενέπνεε από μικρή γι’ αυτό μελετούσα για χρόνια τη ζωή και το έργο της, ενώ από τότε που ενηλικιώθηκα ταξίδευα σε όλο τον κόσμο για να αγοράζω σε πλειστηριασμούς προσωπικά της αντικείμενα.

Τι σας ώθησε να αναλάβετε τα ηνία του Σωματείου ως Πρόεδρος

του Ελληνικού Συλλόγου Μαρία Κάλλας;

Το 1999 ως curator σε μια έκθεση που είχα οργανώσει στην Τεχνόπολη,

ο κύριος Κακλαμάνης μου παρουσίασε το μελλοντικό τότε μουσείο

Μαρία Κάλλας και με αφορμή το γεγονός αυτό έσπευσα να τους

δανείσω κάποια αντικείμενα της τα οποία πήγα να πάρω πίσω όταν

εξελέγη ο επόμενος Δήμαρχος ο κύριος Καμίνης. Όμως ο ίδιος μου

μίλησε για το όραμά του να μεταστεγαστεί σε έναν εμβληματικό χώρο που θα άρμοζε απόλυτα στην εμβέλεια αυτής της προσωπικότητας.

Εμείς βοηθήσαμε στην υλοποίηση αυτού του οράματος για να διαδώσουμε την ελληνικότητα της αθάνατης ντίβας.

Πόσο εύκολο ήταν αυτό το εγχείρημα;

Απαιτήθηκε πολλή δουλειά, πολλές δαπάνες και μελέτες, στατικές άδειες και βέβαια την αγορά όλων των αντικειμένων, ανάμεσά τους οι παρτιτούρες της, αξίας 35.000 λίρες (μιλάμε συνολικά για 290 βιβλία).

Για τον λόγο αυτό ο Ελληνικός Σύλλογος Μαρία Κάλλας τα τελευταία 10 χρόνια έχει πραγματοποιήσει πολλές εκδηλώσεις συν χορηγίες χρηματικές, έχει προσφέρει στον σκοπό αυτό πολλά χρήματα, χρόνο και κόπο λαμβανομένου υπόψιν ότι το κράτος, με εξαίρεση τους Δημάρχους κ. Καμίνη και Μπακογιάννη, δεν στάθηκε αρωγός στην περάτωσή του. Οι επισκέπτες τι θα θαυμάσουν στο νέο Μουσείο; Tα αντικείμενα που κατάφερα να αποκτήσω στους ανά τον κόσμο πλειστηριασμούς. Βραδινές τουαλέτες, κοστούμια της όπερας, γάντια, τσάντες, γράμματα στον Μινωτή, ακόμα και test DNA της. Όλα συν οι άριες της έχουν δωριστεί στο μουσείο. Ο νέος χώρος εκτείνεται σε 4 ορόφους (1.100 τ.μ.) και αποτελεί ένα εξαιρετικό δείγμα της διάδοσης του νεότερου ελληνικού πολιτισμού, καθώς φιλοδοξούμε να εμπνεύσει τις επόμενες γενιές μέσα από το παράδειγμα φωτισμένων ανθρώπων όπως η Κάλλας, που αφιέρωσαν τη ζωή τους στην Τέχνη. What is your first memory from Maria Callas? It was in 1973, when I worked at the Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Washington, regarding her concert with Giuseppe Di Stefano at the Kennedy Center. Then, she asked me to write two letters in French and when I saw her for the first time, I felt something I will never forget. She was a woman of endless dignity, affection and care. After that, I was honoured to accompany her and guide her around the sights of Washington. What does her name mean to you? She was my source of inspiration since I was a kid, therefore I have studied her life and work for a long time, while since I became an adult, I have traveled the world and attended auctions in order to buy personal items of hers. What made you take the lead of the Association and become a President of the Maria Callas Greek Society? In 1999, as a curator in an exhibition I had organized in Technopolis City of Athens, the Mayor of Athens of that time, Mr. Kaklamanis, presented to me the then future Maria Callas Museum and following that, I immediately lent them some of the private items that belonged to Maria Callas that I went to take back when the following mayor, Mr Kaminis, was selected. However, he talked to me about his vision to relocate the exhibition to an iconic space that would perfectly match the scope of this personality. We have helped to the realization of this vision in order to disseminate the Greekness of this immortal diva.

How easy was this venture? A lot of work, costs and studies were required, as well as static licenses, and, of course, the purchase of all her personal items, among which were her music scores worth 35,000 pounds (as these are totally 290 books). Therefore, over the last 10 years, the Maria Callas Greek Society has organised many events and financial sponsorships, offering a lot of money, time and effort, especially considering that the state has not helped to complete this important venture, with the exclusion of the Mayors Mr. Kaminis and Mr. Bakogiannis.

What will the visitors admire in the new Museum? All those items that I managed to acquire in auctions all over the world. Evening dresses, opera costumes, gloves, bags, letters to Minotis (who was a director as well), and even DNA tests of hers. All of the above, plus her arias, have been donated to the museum. The new space spreads to 4 floors (1,100 square meters) and is an exceptional example of the proliferation of modern Greek culture, as we aspire to inspire the next generations through the example of intellectual personalities like Callas, who dedicated their lives to Art. In fact, as visitors enter the space, they hear the Diva say “I have traveled the entire world, my blood is Greek and no one can change this”.

Α multicultural space for everyone!

Όλα άρχισαν το 1886 όταν και ιδρύθηκε ως

μοναστικό συγκρότημα από μοναχούς του

τάγματος του Αγίου Βικεντίου του Παύλου, τους

«Λαζαριστές», προκειμένου να εξαπλώσουν τον

καθολικισμό στη Θεσσαλονίκη στεγάζοντας

ιεροσπουδαστήριο, οικοτροφείο με γυμνάσιο

που προόριζε τους μαθητές για δασκάλους

και τμήματα εκπαίδευσης σε τέχνες από

Everything started in 1886, when it was founded as a monastic complex by the “Lazaristes”, who were monks of the order of St. Vincent of Paul, and aimed to spread the Catholic faith in Thessaloniki. To achieve that, the monastery housed a religious school and a boarding house with a middle school that trained students to become teachers, while it also featured a technical school with courses including from carpenters to sewing. The recent history of Moni Lazariston, however, started in 1983, when it was acquired by the Greek state (on the occasion of the celebration of 2,300 years from the foundation of Thessaloniki) in order to be transformed into a Cultural Center with a closed theatre, a conference centre, exhibition spaces and a library. The historic complex houses the Kostakis collection with paintings of the Russian Avant-Garde, as well as the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the stage of the National Theatre of Northern Greece (NTNG), the Drama School, the theatrical workshops of the NTNG, the National Orchestra, the Festival of Moni Lazariston, hosting dozens of art events. A landmark of this place was the historic theatrical performance “Arlecchino Il servitore di due padroni” (directed by Giorgio Strehler) by the Piccolo Teatro of Milan, in 1998 at the Stage of Sokratis Karantinos that was the very start of its history…

NIKITI This historic village of Sithonia has so many things to show! Nikiti was established during the 14th century, with the ancient settlement being situated at the current location of the old village. In fact, before its establishment, it used to be a monastery. A walk around the narrow alleys of the old village with the houses representing the characteristic examples of the typical architecture of Macedonia feels like a trip to the past. Visit the temple of St. Nikitas, dating back to 1870, the temple of the Assumption of the Mother of God with impressive murals from the 16th century and the Historic and Folklore Museum that is housed in the old school. TIP: It is worth reaching to the chapel of Prophet Elias, built on the top of the small town, offering a panoramic view of the beach of Nikiti and the Toronean Gulf.

AFYTOS Apart from its beach, which is one of the most popular ones on the first “foot” of Chalkidiki, Afytos is still a

Leave your car at the public parking area and start walking around the narrow streets of the village to admire the distinctive stone structures. PARTHENONAS Located at Sithonia, just 5 km away from Neos Marmaras and perched on the slopes of mount Itamos at an altitude of 350 meters, the traditional Parthenonas settlement is definitely a showstopper. του 1871 (η «Αστική Σχολή Λιαριγκόβης») και η Οικία

Αλεξάνδρου, ένα διώροφο διατηρητέο κτήριο του

1812, αρχιτεκτονικό σύμβολο της Αρναίας. Αν κάτι

δεν πρέπει να παραλείψετε κατά την επίσκεψή σας

είναι το Μουσείο Ύφαντικής που στεγάζεται σε μια

πρώην ιδιωτική κατοικία του 1870. Τέλος, τη νοστιμιά τους επιφυλάσσουν τα παραδοσιακά προϊόντα

ARNEA Built amphitheatrically, at an altitude of 600 meters on the foothills of mount Cholomontas, it attracts numerous tourists thanks to its short distance from Thessaloniki (72 km) and its picture-perfect landscape that is surrounded by pines and fresh waters. The heart of this historic settlement (recognized as a “traditional settlement” by the Ministry of Culture since 1987) beats at the main square, the starting point of the cobblestone streets that lead to renovated mansions. Among the sights is the School from 1871 (the “Liarigovi Urban School”) and the Alexandrou House, a two-storey listed building from 1812, a typical architectural symbol of Arnea. Vail beach, 24 km away from Sitia and also known as “Pine Forest” (protected by Natura 2000), is one of the most popular beaches in the entire island. It is considered as the largest pine forest in Europe, featuring thousands of pines and the exotic setting reminiscent of the Caribbean. It was discovered by the hippies in the 1970s.

It is the southernmost town in Europe and the sunniest one in Greece, located 30 km away from Aghios Nikolaos.

Among its most significant sites is the Kales Venetian Fortress (built in the 14th century AD), the Archaeological Museum that is housed in the Ottoman School and the little, picturesque Old Town, in the area of Kato Mera. Το βράδυ, σας προτείνω να απολαύσετε τοπικές γεύσεις, συνοδεία παραδοσιακής Κρητικής μουσικής στο Καφενείον, έναν ρουστίκ χώρο που σε ταξιδεύει σε κάποιο αυθεντικό χωριό της Κρήτης… Το σκηνικό αλλάζει στο Elia A La Carte Restaurant, μια ανεπιτήδευτη πρόταση fine dining. TIP: One of my favourite moments during the whole stay was the wine tasting at Spilia during the sunset. A real cave which has been suitalbly configured so that one can enjoy a private dinner or a wine tasting experience accompanied by Cretan tasty meze.

CHAPTER : GASTRONOMY

Mirabello features four restaurants that promise to satisfy the lovers of gastronomy with the rich choices they offer, while giving guests the feeling that they are in a small village that offers everything, so that they will not have to leave it for a minute. My day, however, started with a hearty breakfast at the main Amalthea restaurant. A sumptuous buffet that celebrates Mediterranean cuisine and Cretan culinary tradition tempts you to have a break from your morning routine and succumb to the tasteful temptations... If the idea of a barbeque accompanied by the summer breeze is all you dream of, just dedicate one of your afternoons at the casual Bay Grill right on the beach. In the evening, I suggest you enjoy local dishes and traditional Cretan music at Kafeneion, a place in rustique style, reminiscent of an authentic village in Crete. The scene changes at Elia A La Carte Restaurant, an unpretentious fine dining proposition. After dining on fine seafood in its sophisticated surroundings, there’s no better place to unwind than the Shisha Patio, drenched in the colourful cushions...

ΤΗΕ ANCIENT AGORA The history enthusiasts should not miss a visit to the Ancient Agora, as it is one of the greatest ones from the ancient years! In the centre of the ancient town, it was the commercial and administrative hub of the island, while it was discovered within its walls during an excavation of the Italian Archaeological School. Among its most impressive monuments is the visible ancient agora, one part of the fortification of the town, the Sancturaries of Aphrodite and Hercules, structural islets with remnants of private residences, as well as a part of the ancient port of the town.

ΑΣΚΛΗΠΕΙΟ

Στην πλαγιά ενός πευκόφυτου λόφου με θέα στη

θάλασσα και τα παράλια της Τουρκίας θεωρείται

το δημοφιλέστερο αξιοθέατο της Κω, όχι τυχαία

αφού αποτελούσε το σημαντικότερο θεραπευτήριο

ASCLEPEION On the slope of a hill covered in pine trees overlooking the sea and the coastal part of Turkey, Asclepeion is considered as the most popular sight in Kos and for a good reason, as it was the most important sanitarium of the ancient years that represented the principles of Hippocrates as far as modern medicine is concerned. It expands in three levels, each of which having a different use. The first used to house therapy rooms, springs and roman baths, the second features remnants of the ancient temple and the altar of Apollo and the third consists of a staircase of 60 stairs that leads to the Doric temple of Asclepius, dating back to the 2nd BC.

ΑΓΙΟΣ ΣΤΕΦΑΝΟΣ

Πολλοί και όχι άδικα την αποκαλούν την ομορφότερη

παραλία της Κω. Μπορεί να απέχει 40 χλμ. από

την πόλη, στη δυτική πλευρά του νησιού, αλλά η

πελώρια αμμουδιά στον Κόλπο της Κεφάλου και τα

καταγάλανα νερά της σε συνδυασμό με τα beach bars, αλλά και τα θαλάσσια σπορ που προσφέρει

θα σας αποζημιώσουν στο έπακρο. TIP: Από

το τμήμα της παραλίας, όπου υπάρχουν ερείπια

παλαιοχριστιανικών ναών του 5ου και 6ου αιώνα μ.,Χ, μπορείτε να κολυμπήσετε μέχρι το νησάκι Καστρί με

το χαρακτηριστικό ξωκλήσι του Αγίου Νικολάου.

AGIOS STEFANOS Many people believe that this is the prettiest beach in Kos and not by chance. Although it is 40 km away from the town, on the western side of the island, but you will definitely be rewarded by the large sandy coast in the cove of Kefalos and the deep blue waters, combined with the beach bars and the water sports options you will find. TIP: Swim from the part of the beach with the remnants of the early Christian temples from the 5th and 6th century AD to Kastri islet, with the characteristic chapel of St. Nikolaos.

ΑΝΤΙΜΑΧΕΙΑ

Αν θέλετε να γνωρίσετε έναν αυθεντικό παραδοσιακό

ANTIMACHIA Antimachia is a perfect choice and a must visit for those wishing to explore an authentic, traditional settlement. It is built on a small plateau 23km southwest of the town. A unique blend of natural beauty with tradition, it takes visitors on a time journey. In fact, it is famous for its art-friendly residents, among which are many popular instrument players. TIP: Don’t miss the local festivals!

ΖΙΑ

Μην φύγετε από το νησί αν δεν επισκεφθείτε την Ζιά, το ψηλότερο κατοικημένο σημείο του νησιού, μόλις 14 χλμ. από την πόλη. Εκεί θα απολαύσετε τοπικές γεύσεις στις προσεγμένες παραδοσιακές ταβέρνες, αλλά και βόλτα στα γραφικά σοκάκια με τα τυπικά μαγαζάκια. TIP: Μοναδική εμπειρία το ηλιοβασίλεμα!

ZIA Don’t leave Kos without visiting Zia, the highest inhabited spot on the island, just 14 km away from the town. There, you can enjoy local tastes at the beautiful taverns, as well as a tour to the picturesque alleys with the characteristic shops. TIP: The sunset from Zia, the most beautiful on the island.

ZIA NATURAL PARK Nature lovers will be amazed with a visit at the verdant Zia Natural Park, just 15 km west of the town. Wander the stone pathways, see the animals in their natural environment and enjoy the exceptional view! TIP: On the top of the Park there are hammocks where you can take a relaxing break.

Για μια απόδραση σε ένα φυσικό σπα που υπόσχεται

μοναδικές στιγμές χαλάρωσης, αναζωογόνησης και

ευεξίας, δεν έχετε παρά να διανύσετε 13 χλμ. από το

κέντρο, μέχρι τα Θερμά. Φανταστείτε έναν υδάτινο

παράδεισο κρυμμένο ανάμεσα στις πλαγιές και τα

βράχια, με θερμές πηγές που αν και τα νερά τους

αγγίζουν σε θερμοκρασία τους 50oC, δροσίζονται καθώς

THERMA If you want to make a short escape to a natural spa promising unique relaxing and wellness moments, all you have to do is to visit Therma, just 13 km from the town. Imagine a paradise full of waters, hidden among the mountain slopes, rocks and thermal springs. Water temperature might be more than 50° C, however as it mixes with the sea water, it becomes cooler.
