Χώροι τέχνης και πολιτισμού, σπουδαίοι εκδοτικοί οίκοι, ψαγμένα βιβλιοπωλεία, δισκάδικα με σπάνια βινύλια και μαγαζιά με vintage ρούχα, δίπλα σε εναλλακτικά κουτούκια, street food, εκκεντρικές μουσικές σκηνές και μερικά από τα πιο ιντελεκτουέλ στέκια της πόλης, συνθέτουν το παζλ της πιο μποέμ και απενοχοποιημένης περιοχής της Αθήνας. An area of distinctive character in the heart of the Greek capital an old Athens flair, featuring old neoclassical buildings and remarkable urban apartment buildings dating back to the inter-war era. THE PRESIDENT OF THE MARIA CALLAS GREEK SOCIETY REVEALS HER EXPERIENCE WITH THE ICONIC DIVA, AND OPENS UP AND TALKS ABOUT THE PERSONAL ITEMS OF CALLAS THAT SHE COLLECTED, THE REALIZATION OF THE GREAT VISION AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE MUSEUM.

Ή πρώτη ανάμνηση που έχετε από την Μαρία Κάλλας; Το 1973 όταν εργαζόμουν στο γραφείο τύπου της Πρεσβείας μας στην Ουάσινγκτον με αφορμή τη συναυλία που έδινε με τον Giuseppe Di Stefano στο Kennedy Center. Τότε μου ζητήθηκε από την ίδια να γράψω δύο επιστολές στα γαλλικά και μόλις την αντίκρυσα δε θα ξεχάσω την αίσθηση που αποκόμισα. Μια γυναίκα με απέραντη αξιοπρέπεια, τρυφερότητα και αίσθημα στοργής. Στη συνέχεια είχα την τιμή να την ξεναγήσω στα αξιοθέατα της Ουάσινγκτον.

Τι σημαίνει για εσάς το όνομά της;

Με ενέπνεε από μικρή γι’ αυτό μελετούσα για χρόνια τη ζωή και το έργο της, ενώ από τότε που ενηλικιώθηκα ταξίδευα σε όλο τον κόσμο για να αγοράζω σε πλειστηριασμούς προσωπικά της αντικείμενα.

Τι σας ώθησε να αναλάβετε τα ηνία του Σωματείου ως Πρόεδρος του Ελληνικού Συλλόγου Μαρία Κάλλας;

Το 1999 ως curator σε μια έκθεση που είχα οργανώσει στην Τεχνόπολη, ο κύριος Κακλαμάνης μου παρουσίασε το μελλοντικό τότε μουσείο

Μαρία Κάλλας και με αφορμή το γεγονός αυτό έσπευσα να τους δανείσω κάποια αντικείμενα της τα οποία πήγα να πάρω πίσω όταν εξελέγη ο επόμενος Δήμαρχος ο κύριος Καμίνης. Όμως ο ίδιος μου μίλησε για το όραμά του να μεταστεγαστεί σε έναν εμβληματικό χώρο που θα άρμοζε απόλυτα στην εμβέλεια αυτής της προσωπικότητας.

Εμείς βοηθήσαμε στην υλοποίηση αυτού του οράματος για να διαδώσουμε την ελληνικότητα της αθάνατης ντίβας.

Πόσο εύκολο ήταν αυτό το εγχείρημα;

Απαιτήθηκε πολλή δουλειά, πολλές δαπάνες και μελέτες, στατικές άδειες και βέβαια την αγορά όλων των αντικειμένων, ανάμεσά τους οι παρτιτούρες της, αξίας 35.000 λίρες (μιλάμε συνολικά για 290 βιβλία).

Για τον λόγο αυτό ο Ελληνικός Σύλλογος Μαρία Κάλλας τα τελευταία 10 χρόνια έχει πραγματοποιήσει πολλές εκδηλώσεις συν χορηγίες χρηματικές, έχει προσφέρει στον σκοπό αυτό πολλά χρήματα, χρόνο και κόπο λαμβανομένου υπόψιν ότι το κράτος, με εξαίρεση τους Δημάρχους κ. Καμίνη και Μπακογιάννη, δεν στάθηκε αρωγός στην περάτωσή του. Οι επισκέπτες τι θα θαυμάσουν στο νέο Μουσείο; Tα αντικείμενα που κατάφερα να αποκτήσω στους ανά τον κόσμο πλειστηριασμούς. Βραδινές τουαλέτες, κοστούμια της όπερας, γάντια, τσάντες, γράμματα στον Μινωτή, ακόμα και test DNA της. Όλα συν οι άριες της έχουν δωριστεί στο μουσείο. Ο νέος χώρος εκτείνεται σε 4 ορόφους (1.100 τ.μ.) και αποτελεί ένα εξαιρετικό δείγμα της διάδοσης του νεότερου ελληνικού πολιτισμού, καθώς φιλοδοξούμε να εμπνεύσει τις επόμενες γενιές μέσα από το παράδειγμα φωτισμένων ανθρώπων όπως η Κάλλας, που αφιέρωσαν τη ζωή τους στην Τέχνη. What is your first memory from Maria Callas? It was in 1973, when I worked at the Press Office of the Greek Embassy in Washington, regarding her concert with Giuseppe Di Stefano at the Kennedy Center. Then, she asked me to write two letters in French and when I saw her for the first time, I felt something I will never forget. She was a woman of endless dignity, affection and care. After that, I was honoured to accompany her and guide her around the sights of Washington. What does her name mean to you? She was my source of inspiration since I was a kid, therefore I have studied her life and work for a long time, while since I became an adult, I have traveled the world and attended auctions in order to buy personal items of hers. What made you take the lead of the Association and become a President of the Maria Callas Greek Society? In 1999, as a curator in an exhibition I had organized in Technopolis City of Athens, the Mayor of Athens of that time, Mr. Kaklamanis, presented to me the then future Maria Callas Museum and following that, I immediately lent them some of the private items that belonged to Maria Callas that I went to take back when the following mayor, Mr Kaminis, was selected. However, he talked to me about his vision to relocate the exhibition to an iconic space that would perfectly match the scope of this personality. We have helped to the realization of this vision in order to disseminate the Greekness of this immortal diva.

How easy was this venture? A lot of work, costs and studies were required, as well as static licenses, and, of course, the purchase of all her personal items, among which were her music scores worth 35,000 pounds (as these are totally 290 books). Therefore, over the last 10 years, the Maria Callas Greek Society has organised many events and financial sponsorships, offering a lot of money, time and effort, especially considering that the state has not helped to complete this important venture, with the exclusion of the Mayors Mr. Kaminis and Mr. Bakogiannis.

What will the visitors admire in the new Museum? All those items that I managed to acquire in auctions all over the world. Evening dresses, opera costumes, gloves, bags, letters to Minotis (who was a director as well), and even DNA tests of hers. All of the above, plus her arias, have been donated to the museum. The new space spreads to 4 floors (1,100 square meters) and is an exceptional example of the proliferation of modern Greek culture, as we aspire to inspire the next generations through the example of intellectual personalities like Callas, who dedicated their lives to Art. In fact, as visitors enter the space, they hear the Diva say “I have traveled the entire world, my blood is Greek and no one can change this”.
