Όλα άρχισαν το 1886 όταν και ιδρύθηκε ως μοναστικό συγκρότημα από μοναχούς του τάγματος του Αγίου Βικεντίου του Παύλου, τους

«Λαζαριστές», προκειμένου να εξαπλώσουν τον καθολικισμό στη Θεσσαλονίκη στεγάζοντας ιεροσπουδαστήριο, οικοτροφείο με γυμνάσιο που προόριζε τους μαθητές για δασκάλους και τμήματα εκπαίδευσης σε τέχνες από ξυλουργική, μέχρι ραπτική. Η σύγχρονη ιστορία της Μονής Λαζαριστών όμως, ξεκινά το 1983 όταν και αγοράστηκε από το Ελληνικό Δημόσιο

(με την ευκαιρία του εορτασμού των 2.300 χρόνων από την ίδρυση της Θεσσαλονίκης) προκειμένου να μετατραπεί σε Πολιτιστικό

Everything started in 1886, when it was founded as a monastic complex by the “Lazaristes”, who were monks of the order of St. Vincent of Paul, and aimed to spread the Catholic faith in Thessaloniki. To achieve that, the monastery housed a religious school and a boarding house with a middle school that trained students to become teachers, while it also featured a technical school with courses including from carpenters to sewing. The recent history of Moni Lazariston, however, started in 1983, when it was acquired by the Greek state (on the occasion of the celebration of 2,300 years from the foundation of Thessaloniki) in order to be transformed into a Cultural Center with a closed theatre, a conference centre, exhibition spaces and a library. The historic complex houses the Kostakis collection with paintings of the Russian Avant-Garde, as well as the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the stage of the National Theatre of Northern Greece (NTNG), the Drama School, the theatrical workshops of the NTNG, the National Orchestra, the Festival of Moni Lazariston, hosting dozens of art events. A landmark of this place was the historic theatrical performance “Arlecchino Il servitore di due padroni” (directed by Giorgio Strehler) by the Piccolo Teatro of Milan, in 1998 at the Stage of Sokratis Karantinos that was the very start of its history…

• The Metropolitan Organisation of Museums of Visual Arts of Thessaloniki – MOMus, the Museum of Modern Art-Costakis Collection, aims to showcase modern art, and mainly the Costakis Collection, an internationally renowned collection hosting works of the Russian avantgarde art (1900-1930). You can also find works of Greek and international modern artists.
