WELCOME TO PINT SIZED 11 14 07 05 08 08 12 04 06 10 2
WELCOME TO THE HALF YEAR PINT SIZED!
It’s been a busy year so far! I hope you enjoyed the first Pint Sized back in May – I certainly enjoyed reading all the stories and updates from our team across B&B and it was fantastic to see so many contributions. Upon reaching our half year point it’s great to look back and reflect on some of your achievements including our efforts in Macmillan fundraising, mid-summer brand performances and collective efforts in driving OBV. We have also seen a huge team effort across all departments to launch cask pins – you can read more on this on page 10.
Last month saw us celebrate Pride where activities were held across the business to celebrate, advocate, and educate on all things LGBTQ+ - thanks to The Village Greene for leading our efforts. With Pride in mind, it was brilliant to see the launch of our new Gender Identity Policy which you can read more about in this edition. Following the latest Pulse survey, I was also pleased to see a significant increase in our overall response rate to 73% compared to 59% this time last year and an increase in both Sustainable Engagement and Business Pride on our B&B Dartboard. A huge thank you for taking part. July ‘23 also marks the one-year anniversary of the full-scale launch of our new premium craft beers Level Head and Flint Eye; and what a year it’s been! We’ve gained listings in over 1200 supermarket stores, have over 1000 distribution points in the On Trade, have run two multi-million-pound media campaigns and as a result have poured over 2.5 million pints. But this is just the beginning of the journey, and we must maintain our team’s advocacy for our premium beers and delivering excellent quality beer must be a key focus. I am also pleased to announce that our IPA initiative Proud to Pitch In has recently passed half a million pounds in grants for grassroot clubs across the UK – an incredible achievement which you can read more about inside.
I would like to thank you all for your hard work so far this year. We have so much to be proud of in B&B and I can’t wait to see what the second half of the year brings.
HI EVERYONE!
Welcome back to our new look Pint Sized! I hope you enjoyed the launch edition and thank you to those who contributed, featured, and supported with the relaunch. Thank you also to everyone who gave feedback on the first one and for all comments received – it’s so useful. This is your publication and I want to make sure we are representing every corner of our business and that you are feeling that Pint Sized is making a difference. With this in mind, I would like to ask you to complete this short survey so I can collate the feedback and work on building this into our future editions.
Not only that, but everyone that takes part in the survey will get the opportunity to be included in a prize draw to win a pair of tickets for an August Heritage Live event! heritagelive.net/whats-on
Please fill out your contact details in the final box of the survey if you would like to be included in the draw!
Thank you in advance for participating. Your feedback will help us to shape and improve Pint Sized to make it the best it can be.
Best wishes,
pins launch, and it’s interesting to learn and see how other parts of the business go about their daily routines.
Jason Albon,
Engineer

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...
What is your role?
In short, I look after our beer portfolio’s social media activity and websites, supporting the brand teams in the promotion of their products.
How long have you been at Greene King?
It’s technically my third stint! In this role, starting as Digital Marketing Executive, I’ve been here for four years
Tell us your career story?
After gaining my degree in 2013, I got a job with a local insurance company as a trainee underwriter, which really wasn’t for me! After doing that for 6 months I joined Greene King in what was then Central Reservations for Old English Inns, spending 18 months there before leaving to join Orbital Media, a digital agency based in Stowmarket. I spent four years there learning all things social media, helping manage Sudocrem’s online presence. After finishing there I saw the Digital Marketing Executive role in B&B was available and couldn’t resist applying, and here I am now!
How long have you been at Greene King?
Seven Months
Career background
I have worked in transport for 20 years.
I started out as a load planner and have worked for various logistics companies. What does a typical day look like for you?I spend a lot of time checking all is okay and running smoothly, sorting out various reports that give me information on how the Transport team is performing. I also manage a team of 44 drivers/dray crew, so I make sure all is okay with my team. My role can be quite reactive and involves having to respond to any issues that may arise such as delivery problems, breakdowns, vehicle defects etc. I really enjoy the variety my role brings; no two days are the same!
Three words to sum up your role Flexibility is key!
What would you say to someone looking to apply to a role like yours?
I would say absolutely go for it! If you enjoy problem solving and variety, it would be the job for you.
What is your role?
What does a typical day look like for you?
A typical day can really vary. Sometimes it’s a case of having meetings with internal stakeholders to find out how best to help them promote their product, or I could be approving content created by our agency. On others I’ll be tinkering with our website or researching the current trends online. Social media changes all the time so it’s important to keep on top of the latest developments. Plus, as with any job, there’s the admin!
What do you love most about your job?
Working with beer is fantastic, for a start! It’s much more interesting than nappy rash cream for sure. I’m also lucky that I work within a great team, B&B marketing. We’ve struck a great balance between work and fun, and it’s a pleasure to be working alongside them every day.
What do you enjoy most about working for Greene King?
As I said before, the team we have here is amazing and I’ve made some great friends within the wider company. Everyone seems to want to pull in the same direction and there’s always support when needed. The Christmas party is worth it alone!
How long have you been at Greene King?
Seven years
Career background
I have always been in this industry. I started as a Warehouse Operative on early shift and did this for six months. I then interviewed for the Team Leader role and was promoted. In September 2022, I signed the contract to be Warehouse Manager.
What does a typical day look like for you?
My role is very reactive and involves responding to many different challenges. I’m very thankful to have a great team around me that make this job as enjoyable as it is – it’s a fantastic environment to work in. In the last few months alone, we have seen our On Time in Full improve by 7/8% which is a real team effort. Three words to sum up your role Challenging but improving.
What would you say to someone looking to apply to a role like yours?
I would recommend it whole heartedly.
I am a Shift Engineer working for Draught Beer/Large Pack. I predominantly look after all the machines that package our beer into casks and kegs.
How long have you been at Greene King?
Just under five years (September).
Tell us your career story?
I started at Greene King straight after school on an apprenticeship when I was 16. I completed my college work on a day release and the rest of my learning was on the job. This really suited me as I was keen to get stuck into work and to not be in the classroom all the time. The Engineers taught me everything I needed to know and guided me through which I am grateful for. I completed my apprenticeship last September and was offered the role as full-time Shift Engineer. It was very satisfying that after four years of hard work I finally reached my goal when at times I wasn’t sure I would reach it. It seems like only yesterday when I started.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I start at 5:30am and complete daily checks and boiler checks such as water softness, boiler pressures and water tests
to ensure the plant is safe to run. From then on, every day is different. My phone rings for a break down which one minute could be resetting a conveyor the next I could be driving a robot. Some days the phone doesn’t stop ringing and it can get very busy.
What do you love most about your job?
I love that I’m always learning, every day I’ll learn something new as there is such a large amount of equipment to fix, its never the same and the team I work with are always happy to help and teach me anything I want to know.
What do you enjoy most about working for Greene King?
The people in the engineering team are awesome, they have taught me so many different skills and continue to do so. Its nice to be working with friends who I can both work with and go for a beer with just as well. I enjoy the surprise that each day can bring as well, I never know what I’ll be walking into.
What would you say to someone that may be considering an apprenticeship?
I would recommend it, hands on experience is just as important as the theory and is a good way to earn money at a young age. It gave me a foot in the door to engineering whilst still learning and being able to learn from mistakes.

WE CELEBRATED PRIDE MONTH IN STYLE!
Last month we celebrated Pride month not only in B&B but across the entire business.
The Village Greene (our LGBTQ+ employee led inclusion group) did a phenomenal job of driving our efforts from the countless stories on Kingdom, and our partnership with Switchboard LGBT, to Drag Queen bingo in our support centres. June really was full of activities for us to advocate, celebrate and educate on all things Pride.
Just as Pride month concluded we launched our new Gender Identity Policy in support of our Trans, non-binary and gender fluid team members at work. This has been created in partnership with The Village Greene and is another step on our journey to everyday inclusion, where our team members and customers feel they can be their true selves. You can find the policy on The Vault and on Kingdom. Please read this through and think about how it may apply to you and your team.

THE MASTER HEN HAS NOW JOINED THE FAMILY!
A new member of the Old Speckled Hen family, Old Master Hen, was launched
Launched as a premium gift, Old Master Hen is brewed at 7% ABV and is bottle conditioned to mature with age. The ale is strong and full-bodied, with a deep amber colour, masses of characteristic toffee and fruit, notes of citrus orange, and traditional English hop bitterness. Using the, nowadays, rarer process of bottle-conditioning, this will allow for the beer to ferment further in the bottle and bring out deeper characters in the flavours of Old Master Hen as time goes by. The small secondary fermentation creates a natural soft carbonation with smaller bubbles, making it the closest thing to having cask ale and a traditional pint in the comfort of your own home. The name was inspired by one of our own Master Brewer’s Ross O’Hara, who was tasked with creating his own personal recipe of the ultimate Old Speckled Hen family brew.
Ross O’Hara said: “Old Master Hen is a proud personal accomplishment and it’s been a labour of love. This ale celebrates the art of brewing, from the selection of ingredients to the process of creating a truly unique product and ultimately, how a perfectly brewed ale is, in fact, a masterpiece. This is a beer to sip and savour and we feel the name ‘Old Master Hen’ perfectly summarises an ale that
has centuries of brewing expertise under its belt and is a true gift for beer enthusiasts.”
Old Master Hen launched on the Greene King Online Shop, in the Beer Café and in Waitrose, just ahead of Father’s Day. It was a massive success and sold 840 bottles in the first week and over 2,000 bottles so far on the online shop. The Beer Café has currently sold 50 cases of the beer and reports from Waitrose shows the two-week run of Old Master Hen sold as well as the best-selling beers in the bottled ale fixture (while it was more than double the price), hitting that gifting spot for Father’s Day.
Old Master Hen is scheduled to return in supermarkets later in the year, in time for Christmas, but can still be purchased from the online shop and Beer Café now. So, if you haven’t managed to grab a bottle, and another to savour, then what are you waiting for?
We’re incredibly proud of Old Master Hen and we think it’s a true masterpiece, but you don’t just have to take our word for it, see some of our customer reviews:
Nigel T - “BEST OF THE BEST. Quite simply a really tasty beer! You can tell it’s been barrel aged and is choc full of flavour. My favourite Greene King beer by far, looking forward to seeing what else they come up with with the barrel ageing.”
Richard B. - “GREAT PRODUCT Awesome beer, perfectly packaged and love the box.”
Barbara N. -“DELIGHTED This was bought as a gift for Father’s Day. Received with great pleasure.”
Michael K. -“SAME AGAIN PLEASE A very refreshing drink. Ideal in this warm weather. They need to be boxed and sold in pairs to get the best reward. Well worth the effort in creating this new brew.”

PASSES £500K FUNDING MILESTONE!
IPA’s Proud To Pitch In initiative has recently passed half a million pounds in grants for grassroots clubs across the UK.
Launched in 2021, the IPA Proud To Pitch In scheme has so far supported over 200 grassroots clubs, with an estimate of over 50,000 people impacted, with much needed funding to ensure communities can continue to play the sports they love. The initiative is funded by donations from pints and packs of Greene King IPA sold across the UK.
Funding from Proud to Pitch In has helped clubs in countless ways, from purchasing equipment, to funding improvements for clubs’ facilities, to coaching qualifications to provide that next step in development. In today’s financial climate, clubs have also requested grants to support pitch hire, ensuring they have a consistent and secure place to meet.
The IPA Proud to Pitch In scheme, invites sports clubs across the UK to apply for funding of up to £4,000 for projects that will help the club continue
Emma Hibbert, Head of Marketing for IPA said: “We are thrilled to celebrate that half a million pounds has been shared and reached so many clubs. It’s amazing to see the impact we can make to each one of those clubs we’ve supported and how small projects can make a big difference.
“It’s more important than ever that we keep clubs funded – to help maintain and improve social, mental, and physical wellbeing. So, we aren’t stopping at just £500k, as we have the ambition to give away one million pounds to clubs by the end of next year.
“We encourage any outlet that is looking to support sports and their communities to choose Greene King IPA, as it’s a great beer, making a great difference. With no extra charge to the outlet, 10p of every pint of Greene King IPA sold will go towards funding the scheme and supporting clubs across the UK.”

OUR 2023 MACMILLAN FUNDRAISING EFFORTS SO FAR...
This year’s
Emma Meins kicked off the fundraising this year with a brilliant darts tournament in February. After such positive feedback it looks like another tournament could be held in October so watch this space for more info.
Macmillan May was jampacked with fundraising events and activities!
Successful cake sales were held in Abbot House, Bury DC, Abingdon depot and Eastwood depot. Sara Mills, Matt Steward and Alice Farnsworth from the HR team trekked 26.2 miles as part of the Norfolk Mighty Hike and we had the incredible Macmillan May auction!
Lynne Nicholson organised the Macmillan May auction that was open to all employees across Greene King and raised an incredible £4,885. The Premium Beers Land Rover received the most bids closely followed by the Ice Breaker Land Rover and the Ice Breaker Beer Bundle! Our very own Sarah Esterhuizen won the Prize Draw to have lunch with Nick Mackenzie and her Exec team member and will be dining in style
DONATE TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
New QR codes have been arranged for all sites so that fundraising can be attributed to each site – you can just scan the code and donate no need for any cash! These should be displayed in all reception areas, alongside collection tins and on all drink fridge doors. Currently, we raise almost £250 a month via the drink fridges! Donations for drinks are not mandatory but we do kindly ask that you occasionally offer a donation in return for your free drink. Think what we can achieve if we all donate occasionally!
SPECIAL FEATURE 8
Macmillan fundraising is off to a strong start with our Brewing & Brands total being up by 54% compared to this time last year!
A message from Lynne Nicholson...

We do still have a long way to go to hit our £70k target as a B&B business so please do share ideas with your line managers or Macmillan representative and please do keep donating and supporting those people who continue to put their personal time into helping this great cause. As one of our retailer partners states –every little helps!”

THE PINS HAVE DROPPED WITH SUNNY SEASONALS!
We are excited to announce the 4.5-gallon pins have officially been released to operators with our July seasonal cask ales, Ale Fresco and New Tricks, a Nethergate Brewery collaboration.
We recently announced that we would become the UK’s first major brewer to launch cask pins to our customers. Our investment aims to help licensees minimise wastage and ensure the best quality of cask ale is reaching guests every time.
Offering the smaller unit will give operators the ability to manage a lower throughput at quieter times of the week, meaning less waste from unsold beer or out of date beer being sold. The launch of pins with our Cask Releases calendar provides a brilliant opportunity for operators to showcase different styles and flavours of cask ale for guests to explore.
One of the beers that will be available in pins in July and August is Ale Fresco, a 4.3% smooth and easy drinking golden ale. The ale is brewed using Centennial hops to deliver the light citrus flavour, a perfect choice for guests to enjoy during the summer months.
NEW CRAFT ALE PRODUCTS
COME UP WITH A NAME...
We are in the process of developing two new craft ales but need your help on what to name them! Below is a brief background story behind each beer and an idea of what the brand could look like. We just need your creative ideas on a brilliant name for each of them!
All Day IPA
A tribute to the original Bury St Edmunds master brewers, the Benedictine monks, who as early as the 11th Century used the same water supply we do at the Brewery today. It’s said they were permitted to, and so often did, drink up to 5 litres a day of low strength beer as it was safer to consume than water at the time!
Write
The second beer available will be New Tricks, the brewer’s second collaboration with the also Suffolk-based Nethergate Brewery. The 4% golden beer combines ginger and lemon to deliver delicious fruity characters and refreshment. For guests looking for a longer drink, you can recommend topping up the ale with fiery ginger beer to add even more of a zing to the flavour.
Firkins will still be advised when operators have that busier footfall and demand, however pins can offer an additional seasonal cask ale on the bar or to provide that lower throughput when needed.
Jack Palmer, Head Brewer said: “We’re passionate about the cask sector and launching pins is a great achievement for us, and the category, in helping to address some of the key challenges that serving this unique product can bring. “Cask ale is part of our heritage and the core of a great pub, and we continue to invest and innovate to secure its future.
Our Fresh Cask Releases calendar shows the many styles and flavours that cask ale can offer, and we’re excited to be able to provide this in a smaller format for operators to introduce on the bar and explore with guests.”
Ale-Fresco and New Tricks golden ales form part of the wider Fresh Cask Releases calendar, a portfolio of 18 limited-edition cask beers available at specific times throughout the year. From July onwards the seasonal ales will now have the option to be purchased in a firkin or in a pin format, excluding only Rocking Rudolph.
Hazy IPA
In the 16th Century in Bury St Edmunds, those convicted of minor crimes were sentenced to a day in the pillories. With clouded judgement and a hazy sense of morality, locals would then come to heckle, goade and even throw things at the miscreants!
Please send all name suggestions to Alex Radcliffe on alexradcliffe@greeneking.co.uk by Friday 28 July.

Craig Barry, Sales Development Manager for Worcestershire and Herefordshire, successfully negotiated with Bespoke Bars Ltd for our brands to form the backbone of the draught portfolio available at this year’s re-enactment events run by The Sealed Knot.
The Sealed Knot is the oldest re-enactment society in the UK, a registered educational charity, and the single biggest re-enactment society in Europe. Attended by thousands of spectators and almost as many re-enactors, the events span the country and give people a ‘real view of what life was like back in the 17th Century.’ Spectators enjoyed the opportunity to taste our Premium Beers and the bar was open in the evening for the en-actors to enjoy and to prepare for battle the next day! As well as Premium beers, a range of our cask ales are poured, and we have even re-badged our house lager for them proving to be a real success!

Greene King’s archives have been described, by people who’ve made the journey to the top floor of 6 Westgate Street, as a ‘treasure trove’. So what can you find there? The word ‘archive’ can conjure up images of dusty papers in piles and bundles – a scene from the novels of Charles Dickens perhaps – but in fact archives can include photographs, museum objects, equipment and all sorts of unexpected things, as well as records. In the Greene King archive, you’ll find a collection of historic bottles
that our beers were sold in. A recent addition to the collection is actually a teardrop-shaped bottle, rather unusual, that contained one of the company’s soft drinks (known as ‘minerals’) dating from the 1880s. Bottle labels from different decades have also been carefully listed in the archive and are available to view in special archive albums, also beer mats or coasters (collecting these is called ‘tegestology’ by the way!) As if that weren’t enough, you will also find a wonderful collection of photographs of the Westgate Fire Brigade dating back to the nineteenth century, the members of the brigade wearing their uniforms standing proudly in front of the engines. This was a tradition that continued into the 1980s. Continuity and tradition are very much themes, as you would expect: the company’s role in the history of Bury St Edmunds and the surrounding area can be explored in depth by browsing through the files and ledgers that trace employment and social history. It is possible to discover who worked for the company and the ownership of different pubs through the years. It is also a story about the creativity involved in developing the products and marketing them, and there is a rich collection of advertising and promotional material in the archive too. Some oral history recordings have also been captured, and the memories shared in this way add
yet another dimension to the picture. If anyone would like to find out more, or if perhaps you have something you would like to share or add to the archive, please contact the Archivist Lucy Hughes, who works here one day a week. The email address is GKArchive@greeneking. co.uk

FANTASTIC EXPOSURE FOR OUR FIRST SPLIT COMPARTMENT ROAD TANKER!
Paul Brett and Rob Carter recently attended the Road Transport Expo 2023 at NAEC Stoneleigh where they visited the trailer manufacturer Van Hool - who have just built our first split compartment road tanker!
The Road Transport Expo (RTX) is a free-to-attend event for anyone involved with the running of an HGV fleet. It provides the opportunity to meet more than 200 suppliers, including all major truck-makers, in one vast venue. RTX is also a great networking opportunity to catch up with industry peers or meet those new business contacts. The tanker was displayed on Van Hool’s trade stand and Level Head was poured for all customers and visitors receiving exceptional feedback!
At Greene King, we know our people are our greatest asset, and we are delighted to recognise and celebrate long service. Congratulations to the following for achieving significant milestones in your career!
Barbara Drobinska – 20 years
Mark Lindley – 25 years
Louise Devlin- 25 years
Paul Hetschkun – 25 years
THANK YOU!

OUR BRILLIANT BEERS SPOTLIGHT: GREENE KING IPA

Drinkers are willing to pay more for IPA. Number of pints sold per pub shows growth when prices rise. We see the same for Abbot.
In Q1 2023, average price per pint increased 7% vs. prior year. Average ROS (pints per pub) increased 4%.

In blind taste tests, GK IPA Cask beats Timothy Taylor Landlord. The same is true for Abbot.
GK IPA scored 6.5, Landlord scored 5.6.

IPA is the 2nd strongest brand in the cask category when we use the gold-standard measurement service for this (Kantar Brand Equity Framework); OSH is #1
- GK IPA Brand Power score of 9.5%, 2nd highest score of 15 brands tested (the top 10 cask brands nationally were all included).
Source: Kantar Brand Evaluator (June 2023, n=1,172)
- GK IPA has the 4th highest Brand Demand Power in the North (OSH is still #1). Whilst regional brands like Landlord and Black Sheep are #2 and #3, we do not see any sign that Northern drinkers reject GK IPA.
