WELCOME TO PINT SIZED
Hi everyone,
As you have seen, we have recently shared that we are making some significant structural changes to the organisation. We know that we continue to face into challenging economic headwinds and changing market dynamics, and we see no let-up in cost pressures. As such, we are making changes to our structure and organisation to ensure our central support functions are best placed to deliver for our customer-facing team members and for our customers.
Greene King is a strong business. We are still on the journey to be the pride of British hospitality, and this is a journey we are very much a part of. For the past four years, our strategic focus has been on transforming our business and we have invested significantly to do so. Now we move to delivery phase, and we need to make the organisation simpler, leaner, and more agile so we can become really delivery focused.
While I know this can feel like an unsettling time, we still have so much to feel positive about – much of which is included in this edition. The past couple of months have seen us celebrate some fantastic award wins, some of our brilliant people have been celebrating significant milestones in their careers, we have seen some impressive audit results, and we remain as the no 1 cask ale brewer in Great Britain.
Our Bury distribution team are nearly ready to move to their new home and you can read about the new name for the site, as well as hearing from Elly Johnston, Logistics Improvement Manager, as part of the special feature on pages eight and nine.
It’s not lost on me that it’s our brilliant people that make our business what it is today, and I just want to reassure you that you will be supported through any upcoming changes to the business and if you have any questions or concerns you can direct these to AskGK@greeneking.co.uk. We will be providing updates and support as we navigate the process, and you can contact our Employee Assistance Programme any time on 0800 316 9337.
Best wishes, Matt

OUR BRILLIANT PEOPLE
We caught up with Mark Millett, our new Director of Brewing Operations to chat to him about his Greene King career so far, what he is looking forward to in his new role, and of course what his favourite beer is…
Mark, can you tell us a little about yourself… I was born and grew up in Harrogate and after spells living away for university and work; I now live back there with my partner Amy and two children Noah (5) and Lula (2). Outside of working in Pubs I spend a lot of time socialising in them so eating and drinking out would have to be classed as a hobby! I would like to think I have a lot of other interests but most of them evolve around sport in one form or another! I have a season ticket at Leeds United and take my son Noah to watch Rugby League at Featherstone. Whenever I can, I love to go Horse Racing and watch Cricket! I also try to keep myself fit by running…which in reality I should be doing more of!
Can you tell us about your career journey so far?
I’ve worked in the Pub/ Hospitality industry for the last 20 years. 13 years at Mitchell’s & Butlers and the last seven years at Greene King. I’ve been lucky in this time to work in a range of roles across Finance, Property and Operations with, and for some brilliant people. Most recently I was Business Unit Director for Chef & Brewer and the Pubs with Rooms across Greene King. What will your new role with B&B entail? It’s still early days but my role essentially has four parts. Working with Gary and Pete across the two Breweries to ensure we maximise the potential across the Belhaven and Bury breweries and with
Our Bury Primary Transport Team hit some big milestones!
During July and August, four members of the Primary Transport Team celebrated a combined length of service of 130 years!
Paul Brett, Tony Hailstone, and Ant Chevin started within five weeks of each other in 1994 so have recently all celebrated 30 years’ service.
Mandy Allen joined Greene King on the 6th August 1984 and has recently celebrated 40 years with us. Congratulations to you all and a fantastic collective achievement from the Primary Transport Team at Bury!
Paul to ensure that the production and supply chain processes are as effective as they can be. Finally, I’ll be working with Aaron and the QUAD’s team to ensure that the value that they add to all aspects of Greene King and our Free trade accounts is really highlighted.
What will you be focusing on in the first six months as Director of Brewing Operations? Not just the first six months but one of my ongoing priorities is to get to know all the teams across brewing and brands. There’s a huge amount for me to learn but I’ve already been made to feel incredibly welcome and it’s clear how much passion there is amongst all the teams I’ve met. Being visible is important to me and I like to think I’m approachable so please make a point of saying hello and introducing yourself as I’m out and about. Beyond getting to know the teams I’m keen to understand the plans for each of the areas of the business I’m responsible for and working with the teams to shape them as we finish this year and go into 2025.
What is your favourite Greene King beer? As I said earlier, I do spend a lot of time in pubs so I’ve got a lot to choose from! I do like Cask Ales and since joining GK have drank a lot of Greene King IPA. Having worked in Chef & Brewer the recent seasonal ales we’ve partnered on have been great. I’m looking forward to getting to know the Belhaven beers in as much detail!

OUR BRILLIANT BRANDS
A BIG MONTH FOR BELHAVEN BREWERY!
The Belhaven Brewery team celebrated two brilliant wins last month at this year’s Scottish Beer Awards and Icons of Beer Awards..
Belhaven Black secured the award for the Best Porter or Stout in the style category at the Scottish Beer Awards, beating 10 other finalists. Belhaven Best was also a finalist in the Best British Style Ale category and the brewery for the Excellence in Branding award.
The Scottish Beer Awards were founded in 2016 and aims to recognise the best breweries and beers in Scotland. The independent competition is judged by a panel of experts drawn from across the sector, bringing together industry experience and market knowledge to recognise the greatest achievements in the brewing sector in Scotland.
Just a few weeks prior, Belhaven Brewery also secured the highly commended status across the world for its Visitor Experience at the annual Icon of Beer Awards. This is
WE CONTINUE OUR WINNING STREAK BY SECURING MORE AWARDS FOR OUR CRAFT BREWS
We struck gold again with more wins at the International Beer Challenge with our latest craft brews getting great results!
We secured four medals at the global awards, including the top scoring trophy award for the Best Can Design for Level Head Session IPA. The legendary beer was one of only 3.5% of entries to secure trophy status for it’s design.
Prior Life and Hazy Day also secured silver in the Best New Launch design category, with Hazy Day also taking a bronze medal for taste in its respective category.
The International Beer Challenge aims to reward and promote beers from around the globe, providing the perfect platform for brewers to
raise the profile of their beers to both trade and consumers. There are over 80 different categories of beer that reflect the diversity in brewing today, with entrants from approximately 30 countries.
In August, we also secured top results at the World Beer Awards, with Prior Life securing the country winner and gold in the Session IPA category as well as Level Head securing bronze in the category.
Will Hemmings, Marketing Director said: “It’s brilliant to see us securing awards for the design of our beers and we know consumers also buy with their eyes and so we have put a lot of thought into how our beer show up. We are proud of the craft portfolio and the storytelling of our vibrant craft beers and it’s great to see how far we have come in two years since the initial launch of the portfolio.”
the third year in a row that the brewery has secured a result in the category.
The Icons of Beer Awards, which is part of the World Beer Awards, are a celebration of the years of hard work that go into every bottle of beer. From the brewers themselves and brand ambassadors, to visitor centre managers, and the industry’s communicators, the awards celebrate the craftsmanship, skill and knowledge that goes into each stage of the process.
Huge congratulations to the full Belhaven team!
WE CONTINUE TO CELEBRATE CASK WITH OUR SEASONAL BREWS
We have launched another seasonal brew as we continue to celebrate Cask Ale.
Watch Room is our brand-new Seasonal and has been inspired by a part of Westgate brewery’s heritage. The 4.3% golden ale is a juicy and tropical brew, bursting with fruit flavours of pear, watermelon, mango and pineapple.
The name of Watch Room is a nod to our very own fire brigade that was formed in 1888 and disbanded in 1997. The Westgate Brewery Fire Brigade played an important role during the war years to fight fires during the raids on the town and in more recent times was there to protect the brewery and its local public houses.
As part of the creation of Watch Room, we enlisted the help of the previous Fire Chief for the Westgate Brewery Fire Brigade, the late Brian Crack, to design a beer that commemorated his service and also included his favourite flavours. Following a discussion with Brian, the brewing team crafted a golden ale to match his preference of a lighter beer, with low bitterness and a hint of sweetness. Watch Room was the end product with a vibrant topical fruit profile using three different hops - El Dorado, Kohatu and Azacca. The golden ale is a celebration of our passion for our heritage and people and Watch Room will be available to buy throughout October.

INTRODUCING ST EDMUNDS DISTRIBUTION CENTRE
Our Bury DC team are nearly ready to move to their new home and have started transitioning to the new site!
We are proud to introduce the new name of the site as St Edmunds Distribution Centre, as chosen by team members. After a multi-million-pound investment, the opening of our new distribution centre is set to mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our logistics network.

This is a monumental move for the Bury team and we wish you the best of luck!

ELLY JOHNSTON LOGISTICS IMPROVEMENT MANAGER
Hear from Elly Johnston, Programme Manager for our new St Edmunds Distribution Centre; as she tells us about her Greene King career journey, what it’s like working in the world of supply chain and how it feels to be nominated by Greene Sky as someone who has had great success at work…
Elly tell us a little bit about yourself…
I've just celebrated my 28th birthday in Cyprus with my family celebrating in the sun. I enjoy swimming and I have been a swimming instructor for over 15 years. I have often moved a lot with work, so I have been fortunate enough to teach in lots of places. When the weather is nice, I like camping and exploring new places with aspirations of converting a camper van one day! When the weather isn’t nice, I enjoy arts and crafts. I am in the process of buying a renovation project house so I think most of my weekends will be taken up with plastering and painting!
I am relatively new to Greene King as I joined at the beginning of January. I left the automotive industry after working for Volkswagen, BMW, Volta Trucks (Electric Vehicle start-up) and Aston Martin as I wanted to gain an insight into other industries and apply my learning of lean six-sigma and operational excellence to new environments.
Talk to us about your Greene King career journey so far
Joining Greene King has been a fantastic experience so far, the culture is very inclusive, and people are very welcoming creating a good environment for the exciting changes the business is currently going through.
So far, I have worked on several continuous improvement projects across the distribution network, focusing on planning and developing GKLE (Greene King Logistics Excellence) a set of strategic goals to help drive the business forward with a goal of operational excellence.
I am also currently leading the launch of the new St Edmunds Depot in Suffolk Park which is exciting to be part of a key change in the network.
I have recently joined the Greene Sky committee as Building Career Confidence pillar lead to help shape career development in Greene King. I am very passionate about this as I am very driven and enjoy supporting other to achieve their aspirations. The automotive industry has shown me the best and worst of inclusive working environments and I want to bring my previous experience across to Greene King to support their progression in career development.
What is it like working in the world of Supply Chain?
Supply chain, is an exciting department to work in as you get full understanding of a products journey and see the complexities of the environment and how this is managed from raw material through to order fulfilment. In previous roles, this has enabled me to understand the complete journey from a car being developed, ordered, built, and delivered to customers. A lot of this knowledge transfers over into my role in Greene King, however I am enjoying actively learning this new industry and the differences it holds.
The environment is constantly changing in supply chain, especially with the new St Edmunds Depot and Brewery opening which provides lots of opportunities for improvement and establishing different ways of working.
Supply chain is traditionally a male dominated environment, and it is exciting to see over the years of my career how this is changing, and I am proud to be a part of that.
What are your current priorities in your role?
The successful opening and transfer to St Edmunds distribution centre in Suffolk Park. This is a huge cross functional project supported by many departments in the business, and I will take this opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support.
Alongside this, strategically developing the network and integrating continuous improvement projects to develop operations and Greene King’s ways of working.
Our B&B Greene Sky nominated you to tell your story as a successful woman at work, how does that feel?
I love reading and learning about other women’s career journeys, it makes me proud to be recognised as an advocate of a successful woman at work. I am happy to have the opportunity to shine some light on my career path so far, and hopefully I have been able to provide an insight into the world of supply chain!
I am looking forward to working with women across the business to support career development, please reach out if you would like to get involved.
OUR BRILLIANT BEERS
ESTRELLA GALICIA 660ML LAUNCHES IN TESCO
Estrella Galicia 660ml hit 417 stores in September, with agreed feasture space down key chiller aisles confirmed in 97 stores this month!!
This distribution expansion into a very challenging market is a great reflection of our strong relationship with the UK’s biggest supermarket, as well as the growing love for the Estrella Galicia brand – well done to Jemma Williams, Matt Nawrat, Kelly Hall and the rest of the team who made this happen! On top of this, Ralph Amos has also agreed a sampling event to further promote Estrella Galicia across 72 Waitrose stores!
MEET THE BREWERS…
As part of our Cask Ale Club initiative, brewers Alan Fulcher and Simon Proctor held a ‘meet the brewers’ evening at The White Horse in Beyton. The evening saw Alan and Simon share tales of Greene King’s heritage whilst guests were able to sample several of our cask and keg beers. These included King Mango, Belhaven Scorcher, Level Head and Hazy Day.
The team received great feedback following the evening with Jane, the licensee of over 40 years hugely appreciative of the effort that had gone in. The guests loved Hazy Day so much that Jane has now agreed to install it on the bar! A great success!
TAP Club is back to introduce team members to some of our brilliant beers! The sessions include:
→ The chance to taste our beers and our competitor beers
→ Opportunity to learn more about the brewing process and flavour profiles of the beers
Planned dates for your diary: 30TH OCTOBER 12.30pm and 1.30pm (each session lasts 30 minutes
CELEBRATING SUCCESS
August saw the largest quality audit of the year take place in Bury – the BRC. The BRC Standard is in place to ensure food and beverage business comply with all legal and good practice standards to make products safely and to the highest standard. There are four key components of every BRC audit: documentation review, site inspection, employee interviews and product testing.
The audit took place in all areas of the operation including Brewing, Bottling, Kegging and all support areas.
The audit went very well, and the team maintained our AA grade. Congratulations and well done to the full team!
We are also pleased to announce we passed the annual Gluten Free Audit back in July with no issues found.
The AOECS Standard provides guidance and technical requirements to producers and food safety inspectors for the manufacture of gluten free products and a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point System to ensure that no contamination with gluten takes place at any stage during the manufacturing, packaging and storing processes.
Congratulations to Belhaven who passed their annual FEMAS Audit in July.
The FEMAS Audit verifies that the industry is meeting its obligations under the appropriate feed safety related legislation and codes of practice, in maintaining safety in the feed and food chain. Special mention to Keith Garson who led the audit for the first time!
Old Session Hen 500ml hit the market back in April as part of a collaboration with Morrisons to hit a £1 price point and appeal to those shoppers looking for value alongside great taste. The product went down a storm with sales peaking at 45k units a week, and Tesco have now jumped on board, with our 500ml bottle launching in 617 stores from the 23rd September!
In response to the initial success of the new member of the Hen family, we are also launching a brand new 10pk into Morrisons stores from 28th October this year. Kirsten Alexander, Brand Manager, said "It was so much fun to work on the launch of Old Session Hen and challenge ourselves to create and launch a brand new product in a matter of months! We were thrilled with its performance after launch and are excited to see this in greater distribution and formats!"

SIDHANT BAWA
National Account Executive
Ahead of National Inclusion Week, we caught up with Sidhant Bawa, National Account Executive, as he spoke to us about about his career journey so far, his experience of moving to the UK from India and what it’s been like adjusting to a brand-new culture…
Sid, tell us a little about yourself and your background I moved to the UK in September 2022 to pursue a Master’s degree in Marketing from the University of Birmingham. Before making this leap, I honed my skills for four years as an Account Manager at Zomato, India’s leading food technology company, where I managed key accounts like Subway and Baskin Robbins. Following my graduation, I joined Greene King as a National Account Executive in the Off Trade team, diving deeper into the world of management and sales. Beyond my professional life, I am an avid traveller, having explored 44 countries (and counting). The excitement of discovering new places and meeting new people is a driving force in my life. I am also passionate about sports, having competed as a national-level swimmer and having a keen interest in cricket and football. Whether it’s cheering loudly at a game or being the life of the party with friends and family, I thrive on energy, enthusiasm, and new experiences.
What has it been like trying to adjust to a completely different culture?
Adjusting to a new work culture in the UK, especially after spending four years working in India, has been an eye-opening experience marked by distinct differences that were immediately apparent. In India, the work environment is often characterized by a fast-paced rhythm, quick decision-making, and a strong focus on rapid growth and execution. The urgency to deliver results often translates to swift turnarounds and a more direct style of communication. By contrast, here in the UK, particularly within a heritage company with a rich history like ours, the approach is far more measured and deliberate. There's a profound emphasis on due diligence, meticulous planning, and a structured process that ensures every detail is thoroughly examined.
Another nuanced yet significant difference is the shift in units and measurements—something that might seem inconsequential at first glance but can be quite jarring when it becomes part of your daily routine. Coming from India, where the metric system is the norm, I had to recalibrate my thinking
to adapt to the UK’s blend of metric and imperial units. Conversations that involve referencing millions instead of lakhs, discussing pints instead of liters, or calculating distances in miles rather than kilometers might appear trivial but represent a deeper, almost unconscious adjustment to the way one processes information and communicates effectively.
However, what truly defines this transition is not just the recognition of these differences but how one navigates them. It took me some time to fully acclimate to these changes, and I am immensely grateful to my colleagues, especially the OffTrade team, for their patience, understanding, and support. They created a welcoming environment that allowed me the space and time to settle in, adapt, and ultimately thrive. It is this spirit of inclusivity and encouragement that transforms the challenge of adapting to a new culture into a rewarding journey of growth and discovery. What impact are you hoping telling your own story will have?
The reason I feel compelled to share my story is because I know that many others, like myself, have embarked on the journey of leaving their home country to work in a foreign land. This experience often comes with its own set of challenges, and it’s not uncommon to feel a sense of anxiety or uncertainty. I want to remind those who might be going through similar struggles that these feelings are a natural part of the human experience. It’s easy to feel isolated, as though you’re the only one navigating these emotions, with no one to turn to. But I want to challenge that notion.
It’s perfectly okay to feel lost at times, and it’s important to recognize that you are not alone. What truly helps in these moments is opening up, reaching out to your teammates, or connecting with others who may be in the same situation. The UK is an incredibly diverse and vibrant country, enriched by people from various cultures and backgrounds. This diversity is what makes this country unique, and it’s something we should all embrace and celebrate.
For anyone reading this, especially those who may be part of a minority group or who are new to the UK, I encourage you to reach out to others, and for those who are already settled, take a moment to check in on your colleagues who might be feeling out of place. It may seem like a small gesture, but to the person on the receiving end, it can make a world of difference. By sharing our stories and supporting one another, we can foster a sense of community and belonging, making the transition into a new culture a little easier for everyone.
Our partnerships day with Saracens saw some team members take part in a touch rugby tournament!
The team had a fantastic day winning three games, drawing two and only losing one! They also won ‘Best dressed!’

WE ARE THE
Traditional cask ale brewing has long been a cornerstone of the Great British pub and remains a key category for our business, so we’re delighted with this accolade.
This amazing achievement is testament to the hard work and dedication of teams across our business, so a big thank you to you all for making this possible.
