WELCOME TO PINT SIZED
A lot has happened since I wrote my last Pint-Sized intro! It’s been an exceptionally busy Q2 with the announcement of our plans to invest £40 million in developing a new state-of-the-art brewery in Bury St Edmunds taking centre stage. Our proposal to move to a custom-built, modern facility truly cements our long-term commitment to both British brewing and Bury St Edmunds, and it will drive meaningful progress towards our sustainability goals.
I’m delighted that with the support of our owners, CK, we can continue investing in our business so we can sustain our brands in market for many years to come with this planned investment forming a key pillar of our transformation strategy. As I have previously stated, we are at the very early stages of our pre-planning process, and you can read more about our proposals on pages eight and nine of this edition. If you have any questions, ideas, or feedback, please get in touch with us at askgk@greeneking.co.uk.
We will of course, share more news on this as the project develops but I would like to personally thank everyone for the support and positive sentiment you have shown so far.
The Euros are now in full swing! We know this is a huge trading opportunity for us so please do get out to support our pubs as we continue to host the nation over the next few weeks. Hopefully many of you will now have tried False Nine, our very own seasonal beer brewed specifically for the tournament, and it’s fantastic to see the work going in to try and raise £1 million for Proud to Pitch In – again you can read more about this inside. Hopefully we have something bigger to celebrate after the final on the 14th July.
Whilst there is lot’s to be excited about, we can’t get away from the fact that trading remains tough out there. We continue to operate in a challenged environment, customers remain under pressure and are really thinking carefully about where and when they spend their money – it’s great to see Liz Wells, Insights Director, talk to this on page 12, and shed some light on what we can expect from customers as we continue in to the second half of the year.
With this in mind, we will continue to chase every opportunity to grow sales and to remain relevant in how we promote our own brands with customers. We are winning market share yet are still underperforming vs our budgeted expectations, so I acknowledge that this year has been challenging. I do, however, remain confident in our plans and what we can deliver with our brilliant beers, brands, and people.
Thanks to all of you for your dedication and hard work so far.
Enjoy the read.
Thanks,
Matt

OUR BRILLIANT PEOPLE
Congratulations to Alan Fulcher, Technical Brewer, who has just passed his Level 5 Operations/ Departmental Manager apprenticeship! Read what Alan had to say on passing his qualification…
The culmination of 18 months of study, assignment writing, and assessments! It was a long journey, but it was worth it both for the skills I’ve picked up and the incredible Greene King employees I’ve met and connected with in the cohort. Greene King’s dedication to apprenticeships (in my department alone, we have five active apprentices and two recently qualified) and upskilling our workforce, will pay dividends in the future, both for the business and for individual professional development.
We caught up with Marcus Taylor-Brown, our youngest brewery operator who has just passed his brewing apprenticeship…
Marcus, tell us a little about yourself…
When I’m not in work I enjoy spending time with friends and family. Also, working night shifts can be tiring so in my spare time I enjoy being at home resting and catching up on the TV!
What is your role on a day-to-day basis?
I work as a brewery operator in the filtration department. I am mainly filtering the beer ready for tanker loading and sending down to kegging. Essentially, getting the beer to the best possible place before it’s sent out. I work 12-hour shifts and when I’m not busy getting the beer close to finished product, I try and help others as much as I can. I get to help the team and it’s a great learning opportunity for me.
Congratulations on passing your recent exams, can you tell us a bit about this?
Thanks so much. So, I have just passed my Level 4 brewing apprenticeship – I’m chuffed to have passed! The process end to end was two years; I started out at a microbrewery and moved to Greene King last year to complete my apprenticeship. I have loved it here so far, everyday has been like a school day – there is so much to learn and pick up on.
There were three parts to my final exam – a multiple choice exam with an invigilator present, an hour’s brewery tour with an assessor and time spent in three different parts of the brewery. I chose filtration, the brewhouse and cellar management and dispense.
How have the brewery team supported you with your studies?
The whole team have been so supportive and friendly. My shift team have been brilliant – they are so open to letting me watch the processes and how it all works. I have learnt so much from the team already and I’m grateful to Peter, my line manager, and the wider team.
At 18, I think that makes you one of the youngest qualified brewery operators in the country?
Yes, I think so! I’m the youngest brewery operative here and I think the youngest the team have had in over 30 years so that’s pretty cool. My first experience in the brewing environment was at the age of 16 and I haven’t looked back since.
Finally, what do you think to the announcement on us investing in a brandnew brewery?
I think it’s exciting news. I keep wondering how it will look inside! It’s going to be exciting to see a new brewery go up from scratch – this is such a rare opportunity and could be the only time I get to see this in my career.
Keep an eye out for the new B&B wide recognition scheme launching very soon. With some impressive prizes up for grabs, Premium Peers is set to provide the perfect opportunity to celebrate that incredible team member who went above and beyond, but never asked for anything in return. Someone that has made a significant change within our business and has made a real difference.
We know we have brilliant team members that make B&B a fantastic place to work, providing amazing services to our customers and ultimately pouring happiness into lives. The first nomination window will open very soon so be sure to check out the details on how to nominate your Premium Peer!

FALSE NINE
False Nine is beating forecasts and has sold over 600 BARRELS Up +107% vs target!
We have launched our very own football-themed seasonal beer, False Nine.
Named after a lesser-known position, the false nine is a centre forward who is stationed high up the pitch but has the freedom to roam. The 4% hoppy golden ale has been brewed using a fusion of hops which deliver citrus and tropical fruit notes. The beer is part of our fresh cask releases calendar and it’s the ideal addition to the bar as guests toast their nation!
Jack Palmer, Head Brewer said:
“We know at Greene King we love to celebrate the big occasions with a specialty beer, and we are proud to have launched False Nine for the tournament. This is the ideal beer to have on the bar to encourage customers to toast the nation during the euros – hopefully we’ll have more to celebrate in July!”
READY TO ROOST: OLD MIDNIGHT HEN STOUT LAUNCHES THIS SUMMER ALONG WITH THE RETURN OF OLD MASTER HEN
We’re excited to announce the launch of Old Midnight Hen this summer, along with the return of Old Master Hen.
Old Midnight Hen is a delicious 4.2% English Stout and recently joined the portfolio as a new style of beer for the Old Speckled Hen family. This classic stout is packed full of chocolate and coffee hints and the hops used offer the ideal touch of bitterness, and the oats in the recipe add a silky-smooth finish to the beer.
It is now available in 500ml bottles and is available to purchase on the Greene King Online Shop, and in the Beer Cafe, Morrisons and Sainsbury's.
Following its successful launch last year, Old Master Hen, a 7% strong ale, has also made a return to shelves with a new brew and limited-edition look for 2024. This year’s brew has been created by Jack Palmer, Head Brewer, with each bottle being individually numbered for collectors.
Old Master Hen launched in Co-Op and Waitrose stores for Father's Day, but is available all year round in the Beer Cafe and on the Online Shop, while stocks last.
HOSTING THE NATION THIS SUMMER
The Euros are now in full swing, and we are all cheering on the England and Scotland men’s football teams as they compete in the biggest football event of the year.
We know this is a massive trading opportunity, and through our fantastic brands and Greene King sport platform, we are already providing customers with unforgettable experiences. If you are watching the game in one of our pubs look out for the Sports Sellers who will be engaging with customers during key matches and taking orders while they enjoy the action (and more importantly don’t lose their prime viewing spot!)
The team have also launched an exciting £1 million media campaign to encourage everyone to watch the drama unfold in our pubs. If you haven’t seen it already, check out this video which is live across the Greene King social channels, Mail Online and Spotify.
Help us raise £1 MILLION for grassroots sport this Summer!
From June 14 to July 14, we’re donating 10p from every pint of Greene King and Belhaven beer sold to grassroots sports clubs with Proud to Pitch In!
We know how important it is to raise funds for grassroots sports clubs and in a bid to reach this huge milestone we are extending the campaign beyond just IPA to include all Greene King and Belhaven beers.
Head to a pub near you to grab your Greene King pint and support us in reaching the big £1 million!

Up +105% vs target!
WOLF PACK
We partner with Wolfpack to debut Golden Session IPA as a Seasonal Cask
Last month we launched a new seasonal cask beer, Wolfpack Sesh IPA, in partnership with the London-born brewery.
The 3.8% IPA is a refreshing golden ale with the perfect balance of flavours and aromas that capture the essence of those warm summer evenings to come.
As part of our ongoing distribution relationship with the brewer, Wolfpack Sesh IPA is a brand-new edition to our Fresh Cask Releases calendar this year.
Wolfpack Brewery was co-founded by international rugby players on a mission to create dangerously good craft beer for ‘Social Animals.’ We are Wolfpack’s official distribution partner, and we support the brewer with selling into outlets and retailers across the UK, as well as on our own online shop. Fancy giving it a try? Order from our online shop before the end of the month.

New brewery in operation
We chatted to Tim Preston, Director of Brewing Operations, to ask him about the exciting new plans...
It’s not every day you get to announce something like this, you must be pretty excited?
As a team we are all excited that the business has committed to investing £40 million into a new brewery to secure the future of our brewing operations. We know that the new proposed brewery is the next exciting part of the journey for us, and for me personally to lead on the delivery of this project is a real career high.
Can you talk to us a bit more about where exactly we are with the project timeline?
We wrapped up the public consultation process at the end of May which went very well.
We engaged with over 200 residents in different forums, and the sentiment was very positive with most appreciating the need to modernise our brewing operations. Next up, we will be submitting the full planning application to West Suffolk Council at the end of this month, and we hope to hear the outcome of this by the end of this year/early 2025.
At what point can team members expect to hear more news on the plans?
I think it’s important to reiterate that we are at very early stages of the process and still very much in the planning stage when it comes to operations of the new brewery. Everything will remain as it is for at least the next three years. As and when there is news to share, B&B team members will be the first to hear. As a reminder, if team members have any questions, feedback or ideas in the meantime please contact us at askgk@greeneking.co.uk
MYTHBUSTING WITH LIAM AND JOHN
Want to know more about how our beers are performing across our managed estate?
→ In 2022 we launched our Legendary Beers range in just 20 of our urban pubs. Since then, we have steadily grown distribution of Flint Eye and Level Head to over 400 of our managed pubs and have sold more than 4 MILLION PINTS!
→ We are the UK’s third largest craft brewer in the UK On Trade – an incredible achievement.
→ Last year, we reviewed our recommended Cask Ale range across all formats in our managed estate. The buy in from teams was exceptional and results remarkable. Total cask performance was transformed delivering a massive overperformance vs our competitors
→ In the second half of 2023 alone, we sold an additional 300,00 PINTS and delivered over £1,000,000 in benefit
→ We are the world's number one Cask Ale Brewer in the last quarter, but soon to be number one over the last 12 months!
→ We are winning in both the On and Off Trade and growing volume and value sales in both channels ahead of everyone else!
What’s coming up?
There are several new trials scheduled for 2024 with some already underway…
→ Hazy Day is currently in 45 sites with more to come very soon
→ Prior Life is heading to selected Hungry Horse and Flaming Grill sites – watch out for that!
→ Belhaven Black is currently on trial in 50 sites across Scotland – some alongside Guinness and some replacing – you can read more about this on the back page!
You can watch the video where John and Liam talk about this in some more detail here
TAP CLUB IS BACK!
Hear from Sophie Cornwall on what’s involved…
The purpose of Tap club is to introduce team members to our brilliant beers including core brands, seasonals and intriguing guest beers. It provides a good opportunity to showcase our fabulous beers and create advocacy for them.
It’s designed to be a relaxed tasting session where you are given the chance to sample three different beers, whilst experienced people from around the business tell you about how they are made, what they taste like and why we sell them.
Going forward Tap Club will be the last Wednesday of each month taking place at the Brewery Tap.
Planned dates for your diary: 31st July
28th August 25th September
Everyone is welcome and we hope to see you there!
NEW ALE CATEGORY VISION
A NEW LOOK FOR TWO OF OUR BELOVED BELHAVEN BREWS! UNLOCKING ALE EXCELLENCE –OUR
The Belhaven Brewery team have launched refreshed branding for two of it’s beers, Belhaven Black and McCallum’s Sweet Stout, in can format.
Following the successful brand refresh of Scotland’s No.1 Ale – Belhaven Best – last year, the team are excited to unveil bold new designs for Belhaven Black and McCallum’s Sweet Stout.
Both of the new designs include a nod to the brewer’s heritage using the iconic malting chimneys of Belhaven Brewery, which are also captured in the recent refresh of Belhaven Best.
The refreshed designs for Belhaven Best, Belhaven Black and McCallum’s Sweet Stout all take inspiration from the changing face of drinking and socialising in Scotland, as well as Belhaven’s proud heritage of brewing beer in Dunbar for over 300 years.
Fiona Matheson, Senior Brand Manager for Belhaven said: “The roll out of the new look and feel for Belhaven Best was a great success and we felt that it was only right that our other iconic beers in the range had their time to shine and aligned with modern drinker’s preferences, whilst also continuing to celebrate our heritage. We are currently seeing great results for the Belhaven Black refreshed look in the On Trade, with it up 74.4% YTD vs. 2023 in Scottish Free Trade and we’re excited to see both Belhaven Black and McCallum’s launch into the retail market and draw even more consumers to our delicious beers.”
We are working to transform the way the industry looks at the ale category with the launch of ‘How to Win with Ale.’ The new vision was officially launched at the prestigious MA Leaders conference, held in Leeds back in March.
The vision embraces the challenges the industry has faced for many years and outlines clear ways to grow and encourage a positive future for the beer, providing a fresh perspective on innovation, quality, and presentation within the ale category.
The vision is split in to five key pillars: quality leadership, perfect presentation, range science, transformational marketing & innovation, and staff ambassadors.
The team have been talking about this internally and externally but if you would like more information or one of them to come and present this to your team, please contact Angie May, Jamie Shipperley, or Eddie Wilkinson.

BURY ST EDMUNDS DISTRIBUTION CENTRE UPDATE
LIZ WELLS Insights & Customer First Director
We caught up with Liz Wells, Insights & Customer First Director, to chat about all things customer and how important it is to think Customer First in B&B…
Hi Liz! Can we kick off with asking how long have you been at Greene King?
I joined Greene King in March 2017, so just over seven years now.
Your role sounds so interesting, what does it involve on a day-to-day basis?
Thanks so much – I think it is! Day to day I have the pleasure of leading the Insight Team, a fabulous group dedicated to supporting and driving the business to further understand our customers, the markets in which we operate, what our customers are telling us about their experiences with us, how we can shape our brands and offers to be as appealing as possible to customers, now and in the future. I also look after the Guest Relations team, and support them in their essential work looking after the enquiries, complaints and compliments that customers have for us. And finally, I am working on how we evolve our business to really put our customers at the heart of everything we do – working with colleagues across the business to understand how we do this in a real and sustainable way.
What I love about my role, aside from the real variety of work I get the pleasure of being involved in, is just how much we can do to learn about our customers, our business, and our markets, and seeing how this can be used by our team members across the business to really affect change and drive improvement. A great example might be how we have evolved our process in food development – in the last 18 months we have changed our process to test a wide range of new ideas well before the menu development begins and have used feedback from nearly 8500 customers to help us get to a bank of ‘customer-approved dishes’ to feed into our menu development. When we get into the specific menus for our brands and formats, we then taste test the dishes with our target customers to make sure our new dish launches can be as exciting and compelling for our customers as possible. We have had nearly 1500 customers in our offices and kitchen, testing these potential new dishes, giving feedback, and seen some great results such as:
• Flaming Grill Sticky Toffee Pudding Cheesecake – 3rd best-selling dessert since the new menu launched last month
• Chef & Brewer Honey & Ale Crispy Chicken – top selling starter since it launched on the new menu in April
The fit out for our new Bury St Edmunds distribution centre is in full swing!
Check out some of what the team have been working on lately:
→ Pallet racking has been installed.
→ First concrete slab in the yard has been built housing the two fire suppression tanks
→ First fire suppression tank build has started
→ Work on the second concrete slab in the yard housing the pump house & chiller (coldstore) plant has commenced.
→ Lighting within the warehouse is continuing to be installed
→ Fire suppression pipework within the warehouse has been installed.
→ Ground floor welfare facilities are continuing to be constructed.
→ Work on the first floor office area will start very soon with fire suppression pipework being installed
Keep an eye out for more news and updates on this over the coming months as we move towards completion.
• Pub & Social Cheese & Bacon Smash Burger is 2nd top selling main ytd
• Pub & Carvery Chocolate Lava Cookie is 2nd top selling dessert ytd
It’s so important to always weave the customer perspective into our thinking, how do you think we could do this more in Brewing & Brands given many of our team members are in operational roles?
I think everyone in our business either directly, or indirectly, serves our customers. All our roles make an impact, whether you are working directly with customers in our pubs serving our drinks, creating brilliant new beers for our customers, brewing our beers to perfection, or making sure the pubs have beers when they need them, we all contribute to delivering outstanding customer experiences and really delighting our customers. The power of everyone in our organisation seeing themselves as contributing to creating these outstanding customer experiences is immense – so having this mindset, no matter what role you have, can make a big difference.
In B&B you do have some impressive proof points to show you are putting that customer first. Being the number one cask ale brewer and now the number three craft brewer is amazing - customers are choosing us over the rest! I think there is real power in everyone recognising they have a part to play in these results.
What are some of the consumer trends we are expecting to see in the second half of this year?
Aside from the great interest around the Euros, we are expecting to see a bit of a calming in the market, but still seeing consumers really think about where and when they spend their money, with experiences which are easy and convenient and those which really deliver on experience being popular. Expecting to see a continued theme of the experiences people do have in hospitality really meaning more to them, and so the need for great execution in pubs being more important then ever.
Finally, why is it so important that we build internal advocacy within Brewing & Brands? And how does this directly affect the customer experience?
Everything we do in our Breweries and Depots touches our customers. We create and brew beer to be drunk and enjoyed by customers. So, if we make and create real advocacy around this, and the importance of this, we can be confident that we will be able to serve more customers and delight them every time!
WE SUPPORT DODGEBALL CLUB WHO
ARE INSPIRED BY ONE OF OUR VERY OWN
BEERS…
We recently sponsored the kit for ‘Ruddled Raiders Dodgeball Club’ who named their team after our classic English Ale, Ruddles Best. The club was formed as a means of bringing together a group of university friends, who share a love for the sport – and for Ruddles Best, with this being their go-to drink to celebrate their successes. Recently, the team became the BUCS National Champions 23/24, which is the highest trophy that can be achieved with university sports.
UNITY
NEEDS YOU!
Unity is one of our employee led inclusion groups. Focusing on true inclusion for all who work at Greene King, Unity supports minority ethnic groups and individuals, and is here to provide a platform for our Greene King community to share experiences, creating a culture of everyday inclusion. Unity seeks to ensure that all colleagues from ethnic backgrounds feel celebrated and can thrive in an inclusive environment.
The Unity team are looking for a B&B Divisional Lead to join them in their bid to drive everyday inclusion. This is a voluntary role that will enable you to drive passion, change, and to have open and honest conversations. As well as a Lead, the team would love to get some more representation from B&B in general.
If you would like to know more about what’s involved, please contact Rochelle Bennett directly at rochellebennett@greeneking.co.uk
PROUD TO PITCH IN
“Weavertown FC applied for a £4,000 grant from Proud to Pitch In to cover additional training sessions, pitch hire at a safer location and a training qualification for one of their volunteers, their application then made it to the February judging panel. When we’re judging the applications, we judge based upon Focus, Accessibility, Community impact, Attainability, Effective use of funding and Inclusivity – Weavertown FC ticked every box. We’re seeing more and more that clubs are needing funding for pitch hire or training sessions which is a real sign of the times – we should all be PROUD that we are PITCHING IN to help keep these brilliant grassroots clubs alive!”
Weaverton FC said: “Massive thank you to Greene King IPA for funding our project! We look forward to delivering our project to develop more female football coaches and enhance our training sessions by setting up mid-week training with floodlit pitches for the winter season, using the funding to help subsidise the cost and remove barriers for the unwaged/lower-waged members. BRILLIANT BEERS SPOTLIGHT: BELHAVEN SCORCHER
In July and August, we will be launching Belhaven Scorcher, a new 3.8% session ale that has fresh citrus notes and offers a perfect summer refreshment.
The name of the beer is inspired by a warm/sunny day which the Scots refer to is as a ‘scorcher’! e.g. It’s a scorcher out there today…
Dunbar is commonly known as Sunny Dunny due to the amount of sunshine it gets making it one of the sunniest places in Scotland! So, we felt the name Scorcher fitted well with a bright, refreshing ale to be enjoyed on a summer’s day!
The design showcases the Bridge to Nowhere (aka the Belhaven Bridge) in Belhaven Bay, which is located just 500 steps from our brewery in Dunbar!
Available from 14th July – 31st August 2024
Belhaven has brewed a new cask beer exclusively for the Seasonal Ale Calendar 2024
A bright, refreshing, session ale with fresh citrus notes.
