Hi everyone, As we head towards the end of the year, I think it’s important to take stock and reflect on all we have achieved.

When I look back, my overarching thought is around how far we have come as a business this year. We have seen exciting investments, ambitious brand launches, new beers, new collaborations, people development programmes, new customers, and some incredible events just to call out a few highlights.

I was also particularly pleased to see our overall response rate for the recent Rant & Rave survey finish at 79% - an improvement on both the Rant & Rave last year (77%) and the Pulse this year (73%.) On the back of this, we have seen significant dartboard improvement on both Sustainable Engagement and Business Pride which is fantastic to see, and you can see more on this on page four of this edition.

This year has very much been about realising our goal of being the pride of British Brewing built on our three pillars of brewing brilliant beer, building brilliant brands & nurturing brilliant people to delight our customers & deliver sustainable profitable growth. We wouldn’t achieve the results we do without the contributions of team members across our entire business unit, and I hope Pint Sized has gone some way to sharing some of these stories throughout the year.

If I look back to the vision I set out for this publication it was to leave team members feeling more informed, recognised and that you have a positive voice in our business – I hope we have gone some way in achieving this in 2023. PETER EBBENS CELEBRATES 45 YEARS’ SERVICE! Peter Ebbens, Health & Safety Manager, has just celebrated 45 years at GK! We caught up with Peter to ask him about his career…

‘The weekend I started was quite a weekend for me as I met Sue who I married two years later who has also worked at Greene King for 25 years! My first day involved a trip to a gentleman’s outfitters to be measured for my GK overalls! We also used to have a ‘wet canteen’ where you could have a pint on your break and a tobacco store that supplied the pubs with cigarettes and cigars.

Oct 23rd, 1978 — An 18-year-old Peter lands job in the wine bottling hall

I have seen so many changes over my 45 years’ service, it has been quite the rollercoaster, but all the positive changes have made Greene King the company that I am proud to work for today.

1992 — Became a Foreman in transport office

1980 — A few years later – Started holiday cover role in the Warehouse 1981 — Applied for Job as Drays mate and then became a driver

1996 —Became Supervisor

It’s great that we now have a much larger team in Health & Safety meaning we can continue to make huge strides in keeping you all safe and doing our bit to take care of our environment. There are so many more stories I could tell but maybe better to tell these when I retire…just in case!’

ROCKING RUDOLPH IS BACK! We’re bringing Rocking Rudolph ale back for the festive season! Following on from last year, for each pint sold of our popular festive beer we will donate 5p (plus VAT) to Macmillan, with the money raised going towards helping the charity to continue to provide vital care and support for people living with cancer.

As the number one Christmas ale in the on-trade for the last nine years, the seasonal 4.2% cask ale is filled with fruity esters and has a malted toffee taste with a crisp bitter finish, providing a perfect beer for some Festive Cheer. Rocking Rudolph is available for all customers to stock, including free trade pubs and lease and tenanted.

Jack Palmer, Head Brewer said: “Rocking Rudolph is a firm favourite every year and it’s great to be able to use our beer to also raise awareness and funds for such an important cause at this time of the year with Macmillan Cancer Support. Last year, we gave over £24,000 from the sales of Rocking Rudolph to our charity partner, let’s see if we can beat it this year!”

Keeping grassroots alive!

To highlight the issues faced by grassroots sports clubs, we recently installed a ‘living billboard’ in Birmingham city centre, accompanied by a pop-up bar.

The unique installation, which featured real grass that was watered by an in-built sprinkler system every time passers-by picked up a can of Greene King IPA, symbolising how the beer is helping to support grassroots sport!

The campaign was supported by David Domoney, chartered horticulturist and celebrity gardener who said: “I’m incredibly proud to support Proud to Pitch In, so if you want to do your bit for grassroots sport, make sure you head for a pint of Greene King IPA.”

A NEW HAZY DAY

After taking all the learnings from a series of beer tastings, the premium beers and brewery team have come up with the next BIG Hazy IPA to hit the market. As determined by some of our very own team members, Hazy Day is the latest craft beer to join our portfolio.

The results from the beer tasting evenings have enabled the team to take the best brew to wider consumer testing before they launch into market. A huge thank you to all those that attended a beer tasting and fantastic to see our brilliant beer, brilliant brands and brilliant people all coming together!

In the 16th Century in Bury St Edmunds, those convicted of minor crimes were sentenced to a day in the pillories (a set of wooden stocks used to restrict the wearers head and hands).

With clouded judgement and a hazy sense of morality, locals would come to heckle, goad and even throw things at the miscreants!

RETURN OF A FAVOURITE! Strong Suffolk, a brew believed to have been created in the 1920s is making a much-anticipated return to our portfolio this winter!

The English Strong Ale is now available to purchase from our online shop for the RRP of £2.50, or from the Beer Café. Strong Suffolk was last brewed in 2018 and has developed a dedicated fanbase due to its deep, fruity tasting notes and the traditional method in which it is brewed.

yet traditional brewing process, taking on a strong 12% ABV ale base, which has been fermented and matured in 100-barrel oak vats. The crucial maturing process can take up to two years and creates the rich Madeira wine-tasting palate the beer is frequently compared to.

Fans of the ale will be pleased to discover that no significant changes have been made to the unique brewing process, or delicious notes of fruitcake, sultanas and dried fruit as well as spice and oak – the main change being the refresh of it’s well-known badge.

After the beer is blended with a dark, fullbodied beer called BPA, it undergoes a process that blends old and new techniques. The result is a dark ale with masses of deep, fruit flavour that is reminiscent of heritage English ales.

GREENE KING'S ONLINE SHOP IS BACK FOR CHRISTMAS!

You’ll be familiar with our online shop as being the one place where you can buy the entire family of Greene King beers – not only that but wine, gin and loads of great gifts too!

If you’ve visited the shop recently you will also have noticed that it hasn’t been taking orders for several weeks as unfortunately our 3PL supplier went into administration. Since then, the team have been busy finding a new fulfilment solution and they are delighted to say that the shop will be opening again to take orders in time for Christmas.

Working closely with our new supplier, Staci, the team has not only been able to relaunch the shop at lightspeed, but also been able to evolve the service and provide new benefits to our customers!

We’ll be introducing a telephone line to provide instant customer service support, as well as extending the order cut-off time for same day dispatch from 1pm to 2pm.

CHRISTMAS AT THE BEER CAFÉ

We caught up with Karen Long, Beer Café Manager on all things Christmas as we lead up to the teams busiest time of the year…

Karen, tell us a bit about the Beer Café team…

There are 13 of us altogether. We have Doina as my Assistant/Kitchen Manager who brings our large buffets, lunch, and breakfast menus to life every day. Doina designs the menu in line with our green policy ensuring minimum food waste. We then have myself, Jane, Jules, Sarah, and Andrea who work as Front of House. Cathy, Paul, Steve and Chris as Tour Guides and Front of House, and then John, Robin and Kim who run the tours. Front of house isn’t just pouring beers, it’s running the shop, welcoming tours, and waiting on the tables. We also have our Supported Learner Mark and his mentor Steve who are with us on a Tuesday and Wednesday until June next year.

The team are fantastic, and all pull together to cover where needed!

Christmas is coming up; it must be such a busy time for the team how do you prepare for this?

You could say that! We have lots of full tours and evening functions during the lead up to Christmas.

We expect Saturdays to be particularly busy in December with panto now on at the Theatre Royal – we get lots of families coming for lunch before

they go to the matinee. We also prepare countless hampers at this time of year, and we support our team members with sending these out as Christmas gifts.

What gifts and food options will you be promoting in the lead up to Christmas?

We will have lots of gift options for Christmas in the shop! We have boxes with bottles and glasses, boxes with chutney made with our own beers and a variety of other gifts to include t-shirts, glasses and playing cards. We even have a gift for dogs!

What can team members do to support the Beer Café during this period?

It’s always lovely to see our team members join us for lunch and shopping in our shop – don’t forget it’s 10% off lunch and 33% off takeaway beers! If anyone needs to contact me for any reason, please avoid lunchtime as I’m normally carrying a tray of food!

What tends to be our bestsellers at this time of year?

Rocking Rudolph, Abbot Reserve and Strong Suffolk tend to fly out the door! Our gift boxes are very popular too.

GOOD TO KNOW...

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM During the 'Great War' and in World War II many of Greene Kings employees responded to the patriotic call to go and defend their country. Of the hundred plus men that left to fight for the cause, 35 did not return, their names are placed on commemorative plaques in the brewery and etched into our history forever.

Iain Murison, Head of Safety, Health & Environment and who spent 30 years in the British Army, has written an article based on the history of Greene King employee Walter Greene who spent 25 years in the Army and territorial force. The intent of the article is to widen the appreciation of Walter’s experience and bring back to life the sacrifice of the many young men from our Greene King family who did not have the chance to live the life we enjoy today.

A POSITIVE CHANGE FOR OUR DRAY OPERATIVES We know that at Greene King we are on a journey to everyday inclusion for all. As part of this, we have taken the decision to re-title some of our roles, so they are now gender neutral.

The changes came into effect on Tuesday 31 October and have seen 150 employees have their role title changed.

This development talks to our new gender identity policy launched back in the summer. The policy sets out Greene King’s commitment to promoting equal opportunities for our team members and how we will provide a supportive and inclusive working environment regardless of your gender identity.

Gary Clarke-Strange, Head of Inclusion and Diversity said: “This is an incredible step forward.

It really sends out a progressive message so congratulations to all involved in getting this positive change over the line!”

We also caught up with Alice Bowerman, Co-Chair of Village Greene, our LGBTQ+ focused employee led inclusion group, who discussed how this change really talks to the Village Greene purpose of

‘Creating a working environment where everyone can be their true authentic self.’

Alice also discussed how not only does this change support our team members but also our customers and wider community who may now be encouraged to apply for positions such as these.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN B&B We have seen some fantastic events led by our ELIGs (Employee Led Inclusion Groups) over the last few months.

In line with the launch of our company Menopause policy in October, our Greene Sky reps organised a B&B roadshow where Meno vests were taken to our depots and support centres and information on the policy was made readily available to raise awareness.

Sunday 19 November was International Men’s Day and Greene Sky supported this to raise awareness of men’s wellbeing. Our employee led inclusion group for women partnered with Andy’s Man Club which is a men’s suicide prevention charity offering support across the country and online.

We also had a representative from the Samaritans join the team at Abbot House to be on hand for anyone that wanted to know and understand more along with someone from the Wagestream team to help those interested to know more. We will be sharing some more information on this soon.
