Senior Enterprise Program Academic

I

Mr Peter Duckett Senior Enterprise Coordinator

n 2006 the Senior Enterprise Program has experienced many exciting changes and growth within the program. Mr Brendan Chapman entered the program for semester two to continue the excellent work that Mrs Marie Zwart has done with the students in the program, whilst Mr Peter Duckett took over as Senior Enterprise Coordinator.

A great example of the hard work and commitment that exists within the program’s members is the growth of the Olive Grove at Camp Kelly. Students attend camp to work and maintain the program’s Olive Grove. In only six months, it has grown from 50 smaller olive plants, to 100 fenced, reticulated and healthy olive trees that have become a real landmark entrance to the College’s campsite. The young men who have contributed to the Olive growth should be very proud of what will become a successful business venture in the near future. Students have also continued to successfully manage their laundry, plant and worm enterprises conducted at the College, which financially support other aspects of their program. There has also been significant achievement during 2006. Three students completed their Certificate I in Business, whilst two students completed their Certificate II in Business. Senior Enterprise members have successfully involved themselves in work experience and INSTEP programs; some have used this valuable workplace experience to apply for apprenticeships and gainful employment. In the program’s other subjects, students learned valuable aquatic rescue and lifesaving skills. These aquatics skills were extended into an advanced canoeing course and some surf and safety lessons facilitated at Scarborough Beach. Students explored

movement patterns such as yoga, dance and circus skills through various workshops facilitated by Ms Ruth Bott. Mr Richard Cackett assisted the boys with their Information Technology skills. The students have set up a Senior Enterprise web page. This web page will be developed further in 2007 and the communication aspect of students’ enterprise expanded. Practical Design and Technology skills are also a focus for the students, designing and creating individual projects such as jewellery boxes and picture frames under the guidance of Mr Tony Webb. Mr Peter Duckett helped the students to develop an increased understanding of horticulture, learning the intricacies of soil profiling, fertilisers and reticulation. Practical use of their knowledge of horticulture has been utilised in the Olive Grove at Camp Kelly, and a vegetable garden that students have created at Waterford. Mr Phil Jurjevich has continued to foster healthy and lifelong fitness habits in the students. Fitness lessons have explored the body’s various energy systems, giving students varied experience in different methods of increasing and maintaining personal strength and conditioning. All these experiences develop a great sense of self esteem, socialisation and personal confidence in students, helping them to acquire valuable skills for a healthy and balanced life outside of Trinity College. We are very fortunate to have the continued support of some excellent volunteers. Mrs Loretta Tobin and Mrs Sue Walker have kindly assisted the boys with activities such as their business skills, lifestyle cooking and horticulture at camp. The expertise of both of these wonderful volunteers has contributed to the success of the Senior Enterprise Program in 2006. It is through enterprise education that students can practically apply the knowledge they acquire, learning valuable lifelong skills that will assist them in their approaching careers. Senior Enterprise students have planned, developed and incorporated a broad array of personal, business and industry skills which will provide a valuable base from which our students can confidently and successfully exit the College.
