English and Debating
Academic
In 2006 education received seemingly unprecedented press coverage in Western Australia as the debate fuelled over the merits of Outcomes Based Education and the worth of the New Courses of Study. It is in this period of considerable flux that I must acknowledge the manner in which the English staff, and indeed the whole Trinity staff, has continued to deliver quality education in such ‘interesting’ educational times. New Courses of Study in 2006 replaced the traditional Year 11 English, Senior English and Vocational English subjects. Considerable time was spent in late 2005 and early 2006 by staff in developing innovative and engaging courses, while ensuring the basics were not forgotten. In 2007 many of these students will sit an examination quite different to the previous TEE English examinations, a challenge for both staff and students alike. It was also a busy year in terms of debating, public speaking and a host of other activities. Congratulations
in particular to the two Year 8 teams who won their respective debating divisions, with the team of Adrian Maydwell, Luke Screaigh, Joseph Di Nardo and Matthew Rechichi reaching the last four before being beaten by the eventual state winners. Mr Tim Redden, as Debating Coordinator, this year has generated considerable enthusiasm in the Western Australian Debating League competition. Mr Gerard Rosario also continues to represent Trinity College in the Rotary Four Way Speech competition with distinction, winning Mr Anthony Burne Head of English and LOTE the East Perth division and then progressing through the next heat, where he will compete in the State Final in February 2007. On a sadder note we farewell two valued members our department this year. Mr Charlie Liggins, who in his tenure at the College has taught Speech and Drama, Media and English, will be sorely missed; while the long serving Mr Robert Armitage will move to Kolbe College in order to be closer to his new coastal abode. Mr Armitage has given great service over his fifteen years as a teacher, Year coordinator and colleague. We wish them both well in their new positions.
