Football

Trinity football has enjoyed another good year with students showing dedication and great talent. The 8B team were undefeated and the 8A team showed great improvement finishing second. Year 9B2 team finished equal first.

Mr John Montagu Displaying outstanding talent Coach 1st XVIII the 9A team finished on the top of the table with nine wins and one draw. The 10A team were undefeated and the 10Bs also finished first. The 3rd XVIII was second and the 2nd XVIII finished first with eight wins, one draw and one loss. Congratulations must go to the 1st XVIII on winning the fourth consecutive Alcock Cup especially as the last three have been outright results. Trinity is clearly in a purple patch with terrific player depth throughout the school and a strong culture based on team orientated football as well as having excellent parental support. The level of success is obviously due to the athletic abilities and skills of the students. Support from the coaching staff, parental fundraising and team management are all important aspects that have contributed towards a highly successful season. Talent and equipment are all important but it is the Trinity ethos of working hard to protect your mate which is at the core of what we are about. An opposition parent at a top of the table clash for the 1st XVIII against Guildford summed up what I am alluding to. He said that the Guildford side had prepared hard to overcome the Trinity efforts at contested ball. They were with them for the first, second and third efforts but could not match the Trinity lads after that point. The 2006 1st XVIII gave a stellar performance in every game and have set the bar very high for 2007. Well done to Kane Lucas and Xavier Foley for making the State 15s Football Team. Both students played key roles in the success of the team in the Darwin Carnival. Kane was made Vice Captain and was selected in the All Australian side. Tom Gryta was also selected to central umpire in the State 16s Carnival. The Friends of Trinity Football have made an outstanding contribution to our football program. Mr Patrick Ward has been the cornerstone of this drive. Mr Chris Brockwell, Mrs Ruth Stevenson, Mr Mike Bradshaw, Mr Kevin McGinnity and Mrs Kelly Russell plus many others have given us amazing support for which we are very grateful. Some of the resources provided to Football by the community this year are as follows. 1. Numbering all Football jumpers in School 2. 1st XVIII Football jumpers 3. Miss Kelly McGinnity employed as Physio for 1st and 2nd team 4. Storage Shed for gear at Waterford 5. Steaks and Sausages after training on Thursdays 6. Ice Fridge at Waterford 7. 30+ new Footballs throughout the school. 8. Strapping Tape and Physio Bench 9. Kit bags for game day gear for each team 10. Bags for the senior students On behalf of the lads and the College we cannot thank the parents and Old Boys enough.

Trinity 1st XV111 Football Team

What a fantastic season. Probably the smallest 1st side I have coached but did they have some athletic ability and heart! Pound for pound these lads fought out of their weight every game. The side clearly had the best midfield in the competition and it was this running ability and the tenacity of the players in evenly matched contests which set them above the rest.

The character of the team of 2006 was tested early in the season when leading all day we cramped up against Aquinas in the first game and lost in the last few minutes. We all knew that from that point on we had to win every game to win the Cup outright. The challenge was before us. Every game was a final and the lads responded like men after the initial set back.

There were many highlights in the season. The return game against Aquinas was fantastic. We started poorly and gave them a five goal lead in the first quarter. Then the side just lifted, it was a great contest as both sides had a red hot go. Wardy our VC spoke to the team letting them know how much the contest meant to him and the rest of the senior lads. It really was all about the “will of the team” you cannot coach passion and honour, the men of 2006 brought that with them. James Embley as Captain and three times Alcock Champion played in the 2004 epic at Memorial against Aquinas; he along with the amazing Jarrhan Jacky (VC) and Patrick Ward (VC) were our leadership group. They were inspirational captains on and off the field. I could not have asked for better role models.

Guilford were our major threat outside the Red and Black. Both games were played at a terrific pace. We blew them away in the second half of the first game. The return match was a virtual Grand Final played in the heart of the Swan Valley. They had significant size on us and had set themselves up to hotly contest this game. Our lads played the best first quarter I have seen in years with a seven goal start.

Everything worked, I could see that it was going to be our day. The rest of the game was a close and hard fought contest. We maintained the advantage achieved in the first quarter. A good result against Christ Church in the final game secured our fourth title in as many years. Well done lads, you were simply the best schoolboy side in the state. Finally I would like to thank our coaching staff and managers. Mr Dan Foley and Mr John Lucas (fathers of Xavier and Jesse and Kane respectively) were fantastic coaches. They bought their significant VFL and AFL experience to our football program. Dan’s laidback and personable approach to the lads is much appreciated. John gave us interesting and ever changing training drills throughout the season. Mr Kevin McGinnity (father of Patrick and Kelly our terrific Physio) was our team manager who, like Dan and John, has been there and done it all before with the Mighty Royals. With a minimum of fuss Kevin made game day just flow.

To the Team

We set ourself to achieve a dream and we all worked towards that common goal. Many of you will never play with team mates who gave as much for each other as you did in 2006. I was honoured to be associated with such a fine group of men.
