House Athletics Carnival

On a warm and sunny day in September the Junior School students were primed and ready to compete in the 2006 House Athletics Carnival. The boys behaved very well displaying a great deal of sportsmanship and initiative on the day. Many parents assisted with morning and afternoon teas, acted as officials and assisted with the cooking and serving of lunch. Special thanks to the staff and in particular Mr Ryan Chitty for his meticulous planning and organisation of the day. The winning House was Campion followed by Queens, Chanel and Xavier. The Basketball Season

This was a great season for the A Basketball Team. We started the season in great form with a win over Christchurch and followed up with a win over Wesley. We continued with strong wins over Guildford and Scotch. Our only loss was to Hale and this set the scene for the Summer Lightning Carnival. This was a fantastic day where we experienced three solid wins over Guildford, Christchurch and Scotch. We drew 14 to 14 in an exciting game over Aquinas. Our final game against Hale resulted in a 10 to 16 loss. This came about from a last minute push from Hale to score 6 points in the final throes of the game. This was a great team full of strong competitors who fully supported each other. There were solid performances from Anthony Biundo, Mark Wong, Louis Iustini and mercurial Jaryd Blakiston. I would like to thank the team for always doing their best even in a losing situation. Well done boys, you are truly Men for Others.

The Junior School Flippaball teams played strongly in 2006. The skill development was constant and the subsequent improvement was immense. It was particularly pleasing to see the teams develop as playing units over the course of the season. Many players learnt the values of being part of a team, sportsmanship and pride. The pride was most obvious during the Lightning Carnival, when the A team held its own on many occasions against much stronger opposition. The leadership team learned to keep the team disciplined and the corresponding improvement was immediate. Thanks to Mr Morgan Cooper who strongly encouraged players to enjoy the game.

The 2006 season was not the best year the Junior School A Team has ever had. Despite this fact we all had fun and learnt a lot under the watchful eye of Coach Mr Gavin Bell. He taught us many things that will help our football in future years. The season highlight was the Ian McRae Cup where we saw ourselves facing the Aquinas College Team. We were fortunate enough to host the game at Trinity’s own Mann Oval, where the two teams’ supporter groups gathered to cheer us on. It was a tight game until the latter end of the third quarter where Aquinas kicked a few quick goals, taking the lead. In the fourth quarter despite a desperate late surge from the fellas, Aquinas held on to win the cup. The massive season ended with the Lightning Carnival where the team capped the season off with a well earned win against Aquinas.

Modcrosse

This year Trinity and other PSA schools began a competitive Modcrosse competition. Modcrosse is a modified game derived from Lacrosse. Year 6 and 7 boys involved in the inaugural team had a fantastic term playing and training in this new and exciting sport. Our team was blessed with some experienced Lacrosse players. These boys aided me greatly in developing necessary skills and understandings that are required in such a fast paced sport. The boys demonstrated lots of sportsmanship and great team play. We had a great deal of success in our weekly games and in our Lightning Carnival at Aquinas. More importantly however, all the boys showed a progression in their skill and understanding of the game. All players increased their skills each week resulting in a very high standard of play. Mr Blair made a huge contribution to our team and the development of the sport at Trinity. His experienced umpiring and advice, given to both teams, was greatly appreciated and valued. Thank you Mr Blair for your tremendous effort! Hopefully this successful start to Modcrosse will continue next year and in years to come. It is growing in popularity and some of our boys this year have joined Lacrosse clubs around the metropolitan area. Thank you boys for your participation and your terrific sportsmanship!

The Junior School Swimming Carnival was a very successful event. The boys displayed wonderful sportsmanship and a very competitive spirit. Mr Ryan Chitty, co-ordinator of Sport in the Junior School, was very pleased with all aspects of the carnival.

Mr Hackett, Head of the Junior School, said, “I was very impressed with all the boys, particularly the Year 7 students who were so helpful and displayed a great deal of initiative in assisting staff on the day.” The winning house was Chanel followed by Queens, Xavier and Campion. We had a large group of boys participating in the tennis program this year. Many of the boys showed a marked improvement and they were all very enthusiastic.

All training sessions and home games were played at Burswood Tennis Centre. The boys gained great experience playing other schools. Encouragement by team members helped us through some very challenging fixtures. All in all the boys had a good time.

THE MISSION OF CAMPUS MINISTRY

We, Campus Ministry at Trinity College, as part of the Body of Christ, are called to glorify God in all aspects of our lives. We are called to create and foster an environment where all can develop an understanding and awareness of and a personal relationship with God, who dwells in and around our neighbour and us. In this environment we strive to provide opportunities for spiritual growth and the building of community. Through our worship, prayer, service, study and reflection and even our leisure activities, we reach out to our campus community, the greater Perth community and the world. Within the Trinity community, we hope to engender a commitment to life-long spiritual growth, to realise the deepening of a love relationship with God and to instil an understanding of the interconnectedness of our human family, a family characterised by mercy and divine justice, by peace, love and joy.

At the beginning of 2006 we faced the challenge of continuing the inspirational work of Br Rob Callen who is now completing further studies in the USA. On a previous extended visit to the States he had observed the key elements of successful Mr Leo Murray Director of Campus Ministry faith development in several secondary schools, leading him to establish at Trinity a thriving model of faith development which encompasses the three aspects of Head (religious education), Heart (the spiritual component: prayer, retreats and liturgy) and Hands (Christian service). This is the model that we implement at Trinity College. We continue to reap the harvest that Br Rob has sown. For me it is impressive to see the generous response of our students to all aspects of their faith development. Nineteen senior students volunteered to help in the celebration of whole school and year masses with the distribution of Holy Communion. Twelve Year 12 students sacrificed hours of their time to lead eightytwo of their peers in the Kairos Retreats. Another twelve Year 12 students were inspiring as cadre. They completed intensive training and went on to prepare the sixty six Year 11 peer ministers for their role. Together they successfully guided the Quest Retreat 2006 through which our Year 8 students were welcomed in a very special way to the spirit of Trinity and the challenge of being a ‘Man for Others’.

Students and staff have participated enthusiastically in our other retreats. The Year 9s were boated across the river to walk with Jesus by the shores of Galilee, where some had to seek shelter from the storm. Year 10s reflected in hope with the risen Jesus in their Emmaus retreat, discovering through personal reflection the presence of God in their lives. In the Encounter Retreat, Year 11s pondered what they had learnt about themselves, others and God through their experience of helping those less fortunate during their week of Christian Service at the end of Term 1. All Year 12s took time out of their busy schedule to participate in the Tabgha Retreat. In July the nine India pilgrims made a special three day retreat in preparation for their extended pilgrimage.

In September, I was particularly impressed by Adam Russo, Janek O’Toole, Daniel Pignatiello and Gianni di Giovanni; four students from the Class of 2005 who led a new venture when they were part of the team who worked with Mrs Marya Stewart and me to present the Kairos Retreat to a group of male and female students from St Norbert’s. It was truly inspiring to see young people that I had met as Year 5s, standing confidently to give witness to their faith before an audience of strangers who became their friends during the four days of the retreat.

At all Year levels, students are very happy to volunteer to participate in liturgies in Music Ministry, altar serving, proclaiming the Word as lectors or welcoming and helping as ushers.

It is exciting to participate with young people as they discover and celebrate God present in their lives. All that we do, we do In Nomine Domini, in the name of the Lord.
