Since arriving at Trinity College in Term Three, I have been impressed by the commitment and enthusiasm shown by the boys in their pursuit of musical activities. Music education is highly valued at Trinity College with an emphasis on participation, performance, the pursuit of excellence and achievement of goals. It is pleasing to see a high percentage of boys continue in the Instrumental Program in Year 5 after being exposed to a year of violin/cello tuition in Year 4. The three choirs: 4/5, 6/7 and select 4-7 choir ‘Get a Grip’ have responded well to varying performance challenges at school and adapted to the teaching style of a new music teacher and choral director. Boys in these ensembles and the Elastic Band instrumental ensemble performed favourably at the Catholic Schools Performing Arts Festival in Term Three, with the senior choirs gaining honourable mentions. A large number of boys also entered as solo or ensemble instrumental players receiving numerous honourable mentions and certificates of merit.
Performance highlights at the College involving the Junior School include the annual String Olympics, the first semester Music Concert Night, the annual Concert and Presentation Evening and informal musical performances at assemblies. The Concert and Presentation Evening allows all boys to be involved in the presentation of an exciting musical event. Preparation of Christmas repertoire this year has allowed both the special Get a Grip Choir and the band to perform for community groups, with the choir visiting patients at St John of God Hospital, Murdoch and the band playing carols at the Concert and Presentation Evening. In Term Four, Senior School musicians performed a concert for the Junior School with performances by the 8/9 chorale, 8/9 concert band and the string band. This was an excellent opportunity for the boys to be inspired to continue their music studies in the Senior School. The Musica Viva visit was also a highlight in Term Three.
Classroom music lessons focus on consolidating music skills and knowledge, providing opportunities to be creative with music composition, engaging in singing and percussion activities and developing a critical awareness and appreciation of the arts in society. I enjoy the challenge of teaching music at Trinity College and appreciate the positive commitment and energy given to musical pursuits. I wish to acknowledge my appreciation to my accompanist Angelo Campana for his excellent work with the choirs and to the Junior School staff for the professional support given to me and the Music Program.
