Italian Academic
I
would like to start by thanking Diane Vito for replacing me in the second semester whilst I was away on long service leave.
The Italian department also played host to a practicum student from Notre Dame University – Mr Jean-Marc Rousset Vera Simoes who contributed Italian much to the teaching of Years 8, 9 and 10. Her expertise in technology was invaluable! Congratulations go to Leigh Dawson, Class of 2005, for being awarded a scholarship to complete his studies at Notre Dame University; he is now pursuing Italian studies at university.

Many thanks to Marlisa Gangemi and Father Terry Curtis from All Saints College for taking our Year 11 students, Marc Luca, Rob Santoriello and Sean O’Sullivan to Italy. Students found the experience both enjoyable and very beneficial to their studies.
Students’ Report The Year 8 class concluded with the customary visit from the Befana and the tasting of not only a chocolate Panattone but the flat biscuit like Panettone from the Genoa Region. The highlight of the Year 9 course were the assignments that they completed on the various regions of Italy. Where possible, students were encouraged to choose a Region which they could link to either an Italian parent, grandparent or relative. Students obtained much of the information from the internet but they were also asked to chat with relatives about daily life in the relevant Region. The most popular presentation was from the Region of Le Marche and to celebrate
Gita Italiana 2006 For four weeks during the second term holidays, three boys from Trinity College embarked on an exchange program to Italy. Mark Luca, Robby Santoriello and Sean O’Sullivan represented Trinity College on the “Gita Italiana 2006” organised by All Saints College. The boys were billeted out to a host family where they stayed for half the time, based in Florence. While in Florence they went to a language school and saw many of the tourist sites in Tuscany including the leaning tower of Pisa and a traditional Italian Easter festival. For the other half of the program the group of students lodged in hotels in Rome and Venice. In these locations the boys saw a vast array of tourist attractions, including the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, Saint Mark’s Church, and went on a gondola ride.
The boys came back having experienced the true Italian culture, have a better understanding of the language, and are more confident, independent and cultured. The trip was a once in a lifetime experience, which the boys truly embraced and highly recommend.
