Basketball
Emmanuel Solana and Luke Webster were stalwarts of the team. Aaron Zucconi provided the strength on the boards and some highly memorable “showtime” moments were contributed by Joe Ross and BJ Manado. The Trinity Third V also had an eventful season. We started in brilliant form and caused three upsets. The depth of the Third V played an important role in the success of the First and Second V teams. Matt Dunstan, Adrian Romato, Robert Falconer and Adam Bird all played successfully in the seconds at various times of the season. Darren Chin, Michael Ward, Matthiew Marks and Cameron Garlett were the strength behind many of the Third’s wins during the year. All members showed tremendous team spirit and enthusiasm. The strength of our senior teams was echoed by the boys playing in the younger ranks. A strong band of Year 10s, including Jarrad Prior who made his debut in the First V, put in some extremely solid performances during the season and will undoubtedly prove to be competitive in the senior ranks next season. Even more promising from a long term perspective is the immense depth of talent in our middle school teams. If our Year 8 and Year 9 teams keep up their commitment to training and continue to develop to their potential, then the challenge will definitely be put out to the other PSA teams in future competitions. Congratulations to all the players who represented Trinity at all levels of the game, from A teams to D teams and social basketball. Your efforts were much appreciated by the coaching staff and supporters. And speaking of those individuals, such a positive season could hardly have taken place without their input. We are certainly grateful for the dedication shown by all our coaches and managers.
T
he Trinity College campaign for the 2002 Blackwood Cup began much earlier than the first game in Term One. A new professionalism permeated the basketball fraternity at the College and this saw an unprecedented dedication to preseason training. This change in attitude was largely brought about through the influence of our new Head Coach, Mr Miles Kelly. Mr Kelly’s sportsmanlike approach to basketball and his supreme knowledge of the game enabled all Trinity College teams to perform at a highly competitive level. An advantage of having Mr Kelly’s input was his willingness to be involved with students at all levels. This enabled a consistency in the Trinity game and the flow-on effect of this will surely be seen in future years as our players advance through the ranks. Trinity teams in the past have definitely had their fair share of talented individual players. However, it was a new commitment to a philosophy of teamwork that enabled our teams to achieve outstanding results. The First V season ended up being the most successful season Trinity has experienced since winning the Blackwood Cup in 1993. The team started off very well, achieving comprehensive victories over Christ Church, Hale, Scotch and Guildford. The victory against Wesley set up a “grand final” against Aquinas, the other undefeated team. The game was a spectacle to behold and attracted a large group of enthusiastic Trinity supporters. Unfortunately, it was not to be our day and, despite a valiant effort, Aquinas claimed the Blackwood Cup by a margin of just 10 points. Congratulations must go out to Nicholas Sas for his leadership throughout the season and to our strong contingent of Year 12 students who leave us with some great courtside memories and some big shoes to fill. The Second V season was just as exciting as that enjoyed by the Firsts. Our players worked exceptionally hard at training throughout the season and were able to finish the season on top of the table despite a loss to Aquinas in the last game.
