Forty years ago CBC Perth transferred from St George’s Terrace to a new site near the WACAand was renamed Trinity College. One of the reasons for the move was the fact that the State Government wanted to have the College’s city site for a new hotel as part of its preparation for the staging of the Empire (now Commonwealth) Games.

After much discussion, the Headmaster of the time, Br J AKelly, negotiated for a transfer of land and for the building of a new school including a hall and chapel. Both these structures were significant architectural features of the new Trinity College and reflected the vision of Br Kelly and the College’s architect, Mr Jim Henderson. Br Kelly and Mr Henderson were able to visit the College during the year and were delighted at the development in facilities they saw.

Aspecial 40th Anniversary Assembly in September provided a strong focus for students and staff to celebrate this important event in the College’s history. As well as Br Kelly, the College was able to have as its special guests Dr Tim Delaney (Head Prefect in 1962) and Mr Chris Lalor (Dux of 1962).

The Trinity Old Boys’ Association’s 2002 Reunion had as one of its themes the celebration of 40 years on the Trinity site. Nearly six hundred past students – many from CBC –were able to recognize the achievements of the College on the two sites.

Perhaps the most significant and tangible mark of the occasion was the unveiling of a special bronze plaque to be located in the footpath outside the Duxton Hotel in St George’s Terrace – the original site of CBC – to serve as a permanent reminder of the fact that CBC Perth was located there for nearly seventy years of its history. In a strong gesture of good will, the Trinity Old Boys’ Association have invited the Old Aquinians’ Association to join with them in jointly recognizing CBC’s former location.

“This is what the Lord requires of you: To act justly, to love tenderly, And to walk humbly with your God.”

This year Campus Ministry has continued to offer unique and challenging opportunities through which students, parents and staff could deepen their understanding and experience of themselves as human persons and their faith as Christians. We have tried to enable each student to develop a deep and lasting commitment to that vision of being “men for others”.

Campus Ministry activities are designed to promote prayer, both personal and communal, and individual reflection. This year a nineteen page section of carefully selected prayers was added to the school Diary to enable more variety in class prayer. So too, every homeroom teacher received a new book with daily reflections for the whole year. The school community has also enthusiastically adopted the Christian Brothers aspiration of: “Live Jesus in our hearts, forever”, as the conclusion for all prayer.

Asequential programme of retreats and days of reflection were offered to all students, and the four day residential retreat known as Kairos (see following article) was offered to all Year 12 senior students. These retreats offered occasions for students to grow in self-knowledge and esteem, in interpersonal relations and their awareness of God’s presence in their lives.

Special Ministers

Twenty five senior students volunteered and undertook a two day training programme to become Special Ministers of the Eucharist, having received the endorsement of their Parish priests. The Year 12 students served the whole community reverently and well throughout the year at all of the school and class Masses, especially at the Christian Brothers Bicentennial Mass at the Entertainment Centre. Likewise many boys from different Year Levels volunteered to serve Mass throughout the year. There was never any shortage of volunteers to read at Masses.

Music Ministry

In addition, many students were very happy to be involved in Music Ministry and provide instruments and voices to lead the congregation. Coordinated by Miss Ruth Bott, this grouop added a great vitality and zest to our Liturgies. It is heartening to see so many boys who are keen and proud to play their music and sing in front of their peers.
