Football
Football at Trinity College has enjoyed one of its best ever seasons with 6 of the 9 teams winning their respective competitions, as a club this makes us the most successful in the PSA. With the strength coming across all age groups the club is looking forward to a bright future, this will only come with much hard work and dedication toward a common goal.
The middle school combined team won the BELT UPCUP competition this year which started with 169 schools entered, a fantastic effort.
1st XVIII
At the start of the 1st XVIII season, the team as a whole set about to bring the Alcock Cup back to Trinity.
Our two biggest challenges, Hale and Aquinas. We went into the Aquinas game confident, but left shattered after a disappointing 40 point loss. Our next challenge to stay in the Alcock Cup race was to beat Hale. Unfortunately we went down, in a valiant effort, by the smallest of margins – 1 point.
We went through the rest of the season undefeated, gearing up to our final grudge match verus Aquinas. This game showed our true potential, as we played ‘champagne football’ to beat the winners of the Cup by 3 points.
Congratulations to Matthew Spencer, Nick Sas and Chris Bandy who lead the team this year. Thanks must go to Mr Matt Hamer who assisted with the coaching and Mr Steve Spencer who was the Manager
2nd XVIII
The Second XVIII enjoyed a very successful 2002 season, winning the first nine (of ten) games and sharing the competition trophy with Aquinas. The players enjoyed one another’s company and showed great pride in representing their school. The team spirit was evident at both training and within games. All players were modest in victory and demonstrated admirable sportsmanship toward their opposition and the umpires.
David Bradley won the Fairest and Best Award and Luke McGinnity received the Service and Contribution Award.
3rd XVIII
Season 2002 saw Trinity blessed with one of the strongest 3rd XVIII squads in many years and with skilled and enthusiastic commitment throughout the first round they had very convincing victories over all opposition except Aquinas.
Everybody made an excellent contribution but certain players like Michael Pigram, Grant O’Hehir, Luke Palmer, Seam Moodie and David Fagan were extremely consistent throughout. Josh Johnson served us well as a Captain who led by example
10A
The 10AFootball team were able to complete season 2002 undefeated. Preston O’Keefe lead from the front as a Captain and was consistently in the five best players. Scott Dillon and Marcus Bin Sali were both outstanding during the season in their attack on and ability to win the footy.
10B
This year the 10B football team went through undefeated – a great season! It was particularly encouraging to see the level of ball skills, confidence, determination and team play displayed by the boys.
Congratulations to Andrew Watson who was awarded the 'Service and Contribution' medal. Other players who deserve special mention for their consistent, creative contributions all season were, Chris Wills (Fairest and Best) Joel Wagner (most consistent) and Thomas Nelligan (best team player) Thanks to Mr Porter for helping out at the last game.
9A
The 9Afootball team struggled during the early part of the 2002 season. The sheer talent in this group of boys meant that when they became accustomed to a more sophisticated style of play they became a dominant force. By the end of the season we were beating the next best PSAteams by five goals or more.
Our centreman Doug Bowen played with balance and skill and was rarely beaten in a contest let alone a game. Steven Martin developed into the best ruckman in the competition and Chris Monterosso played with a dominance that would control large parts of a game for us. Jacob Foley played with assurance and confidence at full back and Peter Zambotti developed into a very fast, exciting and determined half forward.
This team also entered the Belt Up Cup competition and was the first Trinity team in 15 years to win the grand final. More than 130 teams from schools all over the state were competing and the Trinity team played outstanding team football to dominate the grand final.
9B
The year started well with most of our wins occurring early in the season. The majority of the games of the season were played in a sportsman like manner and all students gave there best during each game.
The final win/loss record was 3 wins : 6 losses. Special thanks goes to the following students who were solid contributors all season – Nathan Colli, Matt Fitzgibbon, Garth Jeffery, James Mills, Steven Morphett & Phillip Murray.
8A
The Trinity College 8 A’s football squad for 2002 can be very proud of very successful season. The season kicked off with a resounding defeat of a competitive Guildford side, this followed with wins against all other schools until the deciding final fixture against the old arch rivals Aquinas. In a highly skilled contest the Trinity boys were gallant in defeat. This left both sides with 9 wins and 1 loss.
8B
The team played solidly and ended the season playing Aquinas for the opportunity to finish in top spot. Players who will go on to be very good footballers for Trinity include – Aaron Grant, James Moody, Joseph Brierty, Tom Gryta, Justin Mabarrack, Merv Narrier, Ryan Taylor and Cameron Winsor.
Thank you to Mr Gillies, Mr Armitage, Mr Walsh, Mr Cirillo, Mr Quartermaine, Mr Clarke, Mr Swan, Mr Dwyer and Mr Rainer for their management, coaching efforts and support this year.
