Swimming
The 2002 swimming season will best be remembered as the year where all schools had to increase the size of their swimming teams to a minimum of 100 students. This was necessary as each age group is now required to have four relay teams. As a result, the Trinity College Team had approximately 10% of the senior school participating in the Interschool Carnival.
Due to the large number of swimmers required, many of our students were recruited for the night from other sporting teams and as a result did not have the benefit of the many swimming sessions that many swimmers from the other schools had. It was a credit to those boys that they were prepared to help the team on the night by making themselves available.
While we can be proud of our achievements in the pool, it remains a challenge for the College to field a team in the near future that can be competitive at the interschool events and hopefully get our name engraved on the one trophy that has so far eluded Trinity College.
The work done in our primary and lower secondary is beginning to bear fruit, as our younger swimmers showed great promise in their carnivals this year. On the night of the interschool sports many of the boys swam personal bests and managed to beat many seasoned competitors from the other PSAschools. Special mention should be made of the performance of the Team Captain – Travis Nederpelt. Travis put in some outstanding record breaking performances in the open division. He demonstrated tremendous spirit to compete at the carnival then rush off to catch a midnight flight to the Australian Open Swimming Championships.
The 2003 swimming season will present a major challenge to the coaches and swimmers. It is anticipated that the current pool will be unavailable as construction of a new aquatic complex may be well underway during the first term of next year. However, I feel sure that the spirit shown by our swimmers in the past will prevail and they will perform as well as can be expected in the circumstances. We will look forward to the following season when we will be able to field a team that will boast the benefit of the best aquatics facility in the PSA.
