Seismic and airborne magnetic surveys are underway The Geological Survey of NSW (GSNSW) of 70 to 80 metres above the ground) gather- derstand the geology and groundwater reis currently conducting a large seismic sur- ing data which will also be used to better un- sources of the area. vey across NSW including over exploration tenements in the Cobar area. GSNSW conducts geophysical surveys and archives the data. GSNSW geophysicists use this data to provide information about geology at depth in the Earth’s crust and help to define areas of mineral or energy resource potential. They use the information provided by field geologists to produce geophysical-geological map interpretations and to build 3D models of crustal geology. Geophysical data are also used with outcrop maps to validate geological cross-sections. The Western NSW Seismic Survey uses large trucks to generate pressure waves which penetrate into the Earth and are reflected from rock interfaces. They drive very slowly, stopping every 20 to 40 metres to generate the signal. The reflected waves are detected by an array of geophones and the data processed into seismic sections which image stratigraphy and faults. Seismic surveys can image from 100m to 30km depth depending on the equipment used. Data from these types of surveys can help geoscientists interpret geological features and structures deep below the surface. It can be used to locate potential ground Wondered what these big trucks have been doing in our area lately?
