The first peloton of the Tour de OROC 2025 group of riders arrived in Cobar yesterday just before 3pm and were greeted by locals, including the COOSH (Cobar Outside of School Hours Care) kids at Drummond Park. The cyclists rode 130km from Nyngan to Cobar yesterday as part of their 800km+ charity ride throughout the west. The biennial event raises money for the Macquarie Home Stay facility, which provides accommodation for rural and remote families needing to travel to Dubbo for medical treatment. After a town tour, dinner at the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club and, a well earned night’s rest, the cyclists will head off today for their longest leg, the 160km ride to Bourke.

Claudine leads Tour de OROC peloton into Cobar “It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life,” local Claudine Griffiths, a participant on this year’s Tour de OROC charity ride said after she arrived in Cobar yesterday.

Claudine was among the second peloton of Tour de OROC riders who arrived in town yesterday on Day 3 of their 800km ride across the western region to raise funds for the Macquarie Home Stay (MHS) facility in Dubbo.

The cyclists set off from Nyngan yesterday morning to ride the 130km leg to Cobar and for the first couple of hours the weather was okay.

However it soon got very windy and dusty and Claudine said she found it very tough going.

It was the encouragement from the rest of the group, in particular the support from Commonwealth Games Gold Medalist, Megan Reakes and host/commentator of SBS’s Tour de France, Mike Tomalaris, who are both on this year’s ride, that helped her to make it to her home town.

Claudine was very much looking forward to sleeping in her own bed “and soaking in a bath”. She’s very sore, but not injured and is confident of completing the whole ride, which finishes in Coonamble on Saturday.

The Dry Run aims to strengthen rural communities In rural communities we know that tough times are easier to face when you’re not doing it alone.

That’s the driving force behind The Dry Run, an initiative proudly led by NALAG (National Association for Loss and Grief) in partnership with local community organisations.

It is putting that truth into action, by creating spaces for locals to connect, prepare, and share the knowledge that helps them weather and get ahead of tough times, like drought.

Strong social ties are one of the most effective defences against hardship, The Dry Run is a series of community events designed to spark meaningful conversations and strengthen community connections.

One of these low-key, locally led gatherings will be held in Cobar next week. (See advertisement on this page for details.)

Whether you’re on the land, in a small business, or supporting others in your community, The Dry Run is for you.

“These aren’t big, formal events — they’re about turning up, having honest chats, and reminding ourselves that we don’t have to do any of this alone,” NALAG CEO Trudy Hanson said.

“When we create room for real stories, real strategies and real connection practical outcomes just happen.”

In partnership with local community groups and on-ground services, The Dry Run will provide access to updated information about mental health support, community assistance, and practical tools to prepare mentally, physically, financially, and socially for drought.

People can learn from each other, from lived experience and professional insight alike, taking home simple, actionable tools to check in on their family, friends and neighbours, and to take small steps towards preparedness in their own lives.

NSW’s road funding is on the right track

A $37.5million regional road surfacing funding announcement by the Minns Government last week will pave the way for more durable country roads.

Country Mayors Association of NSW (CMA) Chairman, Mayor Rick Firman OAM said the $37.5 million funding announcement

by NSW Minister for Roads and Minister Regional Transport, the Hon Jenny Aitchison, will improve more than 470 kilometres of state-managed roads across the regions.

The program is designed to improve the safety, resilience and reliability of NSW roads, through a Transport for NSW 10month spray sealing program.

It will cover more than 20 state road corridors from Broken Hill to Byron Bay and as far south as Eden.

“On the surface, this is very good news,” Mayor Firman said.

He praised Minister Aitchison for pushing these crucial funds to be spent on our rural, remote and regional communities.

The Country Mayors leader said that the investment in smart sealing appears to be a very wise initiative.

“There’s a lot that has been done by successive governments over the years, which is appreciated - however, there’s a heck of a lot more to do,” he said.

“Anything to enhance safety on our roads is a good thing and should be warmly and gratefully received.

“However, we still need to see more funds coming out to our CMA member Councils’ most significant asset – our various road networks.

“As Minister Aitchison knows, when it comes to funding for our country roads, there is never enough, especially after the weather extremes of recent years,” Mayor Firman said.

“Ultimately, the NSW Government is talking about spending money on the roads that they are responsible for.

“Over decades, the State Government has cost-shifted various road responsibilities onto Local Government in rural, remote and regional NSW by changing their classification.

“The CMA is optimistic that the new Transport for NSW reclassification program will see appropriate road infrastructure cost burdens returned to our NSW Government.

“Minister Aitchison and her team have done a lot of work developing that scheme and CMA Board and members applaud it,” he said.

Man dies in quad Cooler week and some rain ahead bike accident A 19 year old man, believed to be visiting from Canberra, died following a quad bike accident last Friday on a property near Nymagee.

About 9pm on Friday, emergency services were called to a property on Manuka Road, Nymagee, about 97km south of Cobar, following reports of a crash.

Officers attached to Central North Police District attended and found a 19-year-old man with critical injuries.

Police were told a four-wheeler buggy had allegedly rolled, trapping the driver underneath.

Family members and police performed CPR prior to the arrival of NSW Ambulance paramedics.

The man was then treated by paramedics, but he died at the scene.

His male passenger, also 19, did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

A crime scene was established and police commenced an investigation.

A report is being prepared for the corner.

Cobar experienced a mix of spring conditions over the past week ranging from cool and cloudy to hot and windy.

Our coolest day over the past week was Tuesday when the mercury only reached 21.5, while yesterday we recorded our warmest day with a top temperature of 33.8 degrees.

It got to a top of 22.7 last Thursday and after a cool start to the morning on Friday, it warmed up to a top of 23.3 degrees.

Saturday’s maximum temperature was 28.8 degrees before the mercury hit 33.6 on Sunday.

Looking ahead, temperatures are forecast to be mostly close to average with 26 degrees the expected top for today, with a high chance of rain.

The Bureau is forecasting a top of 29 degrees tomorrow and Saturday is predicted to reach 30.

Sunday is expected to be a cloudy day with a top of 26 degrees and a high chance of rain.

Monday’s high should be 27 with a slight chance of rain.

The outlook for Tuesday is 28 degrees.

Demon hunters on the big screen

The Cobar Youth and Community Centre has been offering a range of activities for kids during the school holidays. These kids were snapped watching a movie showing of K-Pop Demon Hunters on Friday. The Youthie has also been offering games, sport and dance activities along with getting kids involved in a car wash to raise money for the Tour de OROC fundraiser for Macquarie Home Stay.

Fire fighting win

Red tape preventing the use of Farm Fire Units (FFUs) has been reduced ahead of the state’s bushfire season.

The NSW Government launched a conditional registration scheme last week to enable typically unregistered FFUs to be used legally and under the protection of insurance.

FFUs are commonly small trucks, utes or trailers with fixed water, pumps or fire management equipment, kept on farms to be rapidly deployed in the event of a fire.

NSW Farmers’ President Xavier Martin said the new scheme was progress on solving the long term problem facing farmer volunteers.

“These vehicles are lightning quick at getting to fires and getting them under control – but it’s simply not practical to register these units when they’re primarily used on farm for just a few months each year,” Mr Martin said.

“A more reasonable method to conditionally register these units for their specific purpose, so they can be used legally and under the protection of third-party insurance, is much needed – and this is a step towards that.”

With farmers now able to apply to register their units under the scheme, Mr Martin said NSW Farmers would monitor the scheme to ensure it was fit-for-purpose for farmer volunteers across the state.

“There’s still conditions around distance, permanently attached firefighting equipment and vehicle inspections (including costs) that must be met as part of the scheme, so it’s certainly not a perfect solution, but this is an important starting point after two trials.

“It has taken a long time to get here and this scheme has got to work for our farmer volunteers, who are the ones that use these units to fight fires and protect not just their farms, but their communities too,” Mr Martin said.

New targets for Mt Hope mining

A previously overlooked “Greenfields” style target has been discovered during a recent electromagnetic survey at Mount Hope.

Mount Hope Mining Managing Director and CEO Fergus Kiley reports strong results were identified from a recent Moving Loop Transient Electromagnetic (MLTEM) geophysical survey at Fenceline and Mt Solar, both of which are within the Company’s 100 per cent owned Mt Hope Project south of Cobar.

“These new targets at Fenceline and Mt Solar continue to demonstrate the prospectivity of the Mt Hope project portfolio,” Mr Kiley said.

“The Fenceline prospect represents another “Greenfields” style target that has previously been overlooked.

“The strength of the EM conductor, coupled with its location and proximity to anomalous soil and rock chip geochemical samples, gives the Company confidence in advancing it towards drilling.

“The Mt Solar prospect, an area that has previously been mined, sits at the junction of two major structures, atop an igneous intrusion at depth,” Mr Kiley said.

“The previous drilling has identified anomalous copper and gold, and the Company has identified areas along strike from the historic drilling that coincide with historic Airbourne VTEM targets that have previously not been drill tested.”

Teen cadets shaped into soldiers

A group of eight cadets (from 13 to 17 years) and their Captain Colleen Boucher AAC from the Cobar Cadet Unit 221, joined 1,300 other cadets and 180 staff for seven days of training at Singleton Army Base last week. The annual training exercise included simulated weapons training, live firing, ground and water obstacle courses, navigation, a drill competition and a round robin Commander’s Challenge activity.

The Quokkas are coming to Cobar

The Quokkas are coming to Cobar and we don’t mean those cute little Australian marsupials with their distinctive smiles that Chris Hemsworth and Roger Federer made famous!

The Quokkas are a musical mash-up like no other with a former Adelaide Crows AFL footballer, an Australia’s Got Talent grand finalist, the niece of Christine Anu, a Samoan singer and a music therapist.

The five piece band are also professional musicians.

The got together at the end of 2020 with a simple goal of creating fun and inclusive music for kids.

The Quokkas’ music is specifically aimed at preschoolers, toddlers, and children aged one to five, with their YouTube channel and songs featuring educational content like counting and themes of inclusivity and diversity in an engaging and fun way for young audiences Through their music, The Quokkas help children develop a broader perspective on the world.

They’ll be in town on Monday for a lunchtime concert at the Services Club.

Yabbies back in the drink for another new swimming season The Cobar Yabbies Senior Men’s Swimming Club were back in the drink on Tuesday night dipping their toes (and more) into the water for another new season of competition.

From the field of 11 swimmers, Bill Fugar was the first winner of the night (and of the new 2025/2026 season) winning the 30 metres handicapped freestyle event with a time of 0.11 seconds off his nominated time.

He was also the best performer of the night finishing with three out of three podium finishes.

Fugar backed up his win in the 30m event with a third place finish in the 50m swim (with 1.54 sec off his time) and was also third in the 100m event, with 1.85 seconds off his time.

Jason Toomey won the 50m event with a wetsuit assisted time.

He finished within 0.28 seconds of his nominated time.

Chris Powell was further back in second place on 0.58.

Keeping warm between races in his parker paid off for Henry Knight and he cruised to an easy victory in the 100m swim.

Knight finished within 1.09 seconds of his nominated time to claim the win.

It was a tough start to the new season on Tuesday with the Yabbies facing overcast Toomey followed in second place touchconditions, a sprinkle of rain, a cool breeze and 22 degrees water temperature (which was ing the wall 1.59 seconds off his nominated just one degree warmer than the outside temperature at the time). Paul hadn’t had a lot of mat/prep time leading up to the event due to work commitments, but despite this, he made a good show, calling upon his experience to earn Silver for this division.

Caleb and Connor both returned to compete in the Men’s Open division.

Unfortunately, despite some early wins by both of them, they were eventually eliminated from the competition.

Paul also returned for the Open Veterans division, but he too was eventually eliminated.

Fantastic Fours final was played with plenty of flair The final of the Golfie Bowls Fours Championships was played on Monday at the club and was hands-down the best lawn bowls match played on the greens this year.

The ‘Young Guns’ team of Jay Egan, Paul Kershaw, Mark ‘George’ Fraser and Alec Fraser finished as thrilling +2 winners!

They accounted for their opposition of Tom Overend, Barry Bargwanna, Michael Sargent and Don Roberts.

It was a great game with the decider coming right down to the last two ends.

The lead see-sawed a couple of times and at the end of the 10th end it was anyone’s game with Team Fraser 11-10 in front of Team Roberts.

Team Fraser then held the mat for the next four ends before Team Roberts started to play their way back into the match.

Team Fraser however kept chipping away at the scoreboard.

On the final end, and with the momentum in their favour, Team Roberts needed six to win, but alas they only managed to claim four shots and the Young Guns took the win.

Saturday’s Social Bowls had enough players for a game of Pairs and one of Triples.

Brianna Learmonth and Fame is Easy finished in front in the Novice Barrel Horse Race with 18.414 ahead of Jodi Kilmartin and Bullet who finished second with 18.55.

In the Juniors grades, Cooper Craig was first in the 14-U18 years Junior Bull Ride, with 77 points, Brock Hamilton came in second on 75 points.

The 14-U18 years Juvenile Barrel Race was won by Gabriella Phillips with a time of 17.826 while Hannah Fulton was second with 18.131.

Kenzie Litchfield won the 11-U14 years Junior Barrel Race with a time of 18.618 while Charlize Selmes was second on 18.815.

James Ross won the 11-U14 years Junior Steer Ride with 60 points.

The 8-U11 years Barrel Race was won by Indi Potter with a time of 19.096 over second placed Maya Bandy with 19.356. In the 8-U11 years Junior Steer Ride, Blake Abbott was first with 62 points while second place was a tie between Brysen Bull (61) and Levi Craig (61).

A few locals also competed, including Chris Our very own Copper City Cowboy, Chris Deighton, made a good showing on Saturday Deighton, Daniel Pagett, Levi Prince and CharMiller however none completed their ride to at the Cobar Rodeo riding a bull and a bronc. He unfortunately didn’t last the required lie earn a score. eight seconds to complete his ride and record a time in either event.
