“Camp Quality supports families and children impacted by cancer and we’re very fortunate to have very healthy families,” Sara told The Cobar Weekly.

“It’s all about giving back, using awareness and raising funds so that we can create memories.

“The EsCARpade is lots of fun for us. We get more out of it than I think what we give.

“But it’s a really good way to raise awareness and raise funds.”

The group set off from Tamworth on Saturday on a varied and challenging course.

They know where they are headed each day before they set off but they don’t know how they are getting there.

“It’s never a direct route,” Melanie said.

“We have been on dirt roads, in the bush, hitting all the potholes, and we even had a water crossing today.”

After leaving Cobar yesterday, they were headed to Broken Hill with a stop off at White Sisters Melanie McLaughlin, Georgina Mitchell and Sara Morgan in the Lego Legends Cliffs.

“And then it’s on to Mildura, Swan Hill, car are taking part in this year’s Camp Quality EsCARpade fundraiser.

Two new ore bodies found at Nymagee Mine

Aurelia Metals has reported the discovery of two new ore bodies – Lazer and Metropolitan – at the historical Nymagee Mine south of Cobar.

Discovered as part of their ongoing exploration programs in the region, the discovery also extends the known mineralisation at Nymagee North.

The program intersected strong copper and gold grades, with results indicating mineralisation at Nymagee North may have a higher gold tenor than the Nymagee Main deposit.

Aurelia’s Chief Development and Technical Officer, Andrew Graham said the results mark a significant milestone in the Company’s Nymagee exploration journey.

“It is very exciting for the team to have intersected significant mineralisation north of the Nymagee Main deposit, as part of the most recent resource expansion drill program at the Nymagee Mine,” Mr Graham said.

“The discovery of two new lenses, Lazer and Metropolitan, demonstrate the significant opportunity for resource expansion at Nymagee.

“It also highlights the thoughtful, scienceled approach guiding our exploration opportunities.

“Drilling at Nymagee will continue as we work towards our target of defining an economically mineable resource.

“This most recent program takes us meaningfully closer to that goal,” he said.

Drilling at Nymagee is currently targeting down-dip extensions of Nymagee Main mineralisation and Downhole Electro-magnetic (DHEM) conductor plates identified by the company’s survey in H2 FY2025.

An additional DHEM survey is planned at Nymagee North in November 2025 to guide targeting of further drilling.

The Nymagee Project is set to be technically reviewed in H2 FY2026.

“We’ve seen dogs where they haven’t eaten their breakfast that morning and that’s the first time that someone’s noticed and then, by the afternoon, they’re vomiting and really, really flat.”

Angus said Parvovirus is preventable with vaccination. The disease can be fatal if not treated appropriately.

It’s time to be breast aware This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, eligible women from Western NSW Local Health District are being urged to book a free mammogram, with 42 per cent of women in the region overdue for their twoyearly breast cancer screening.

For women aged 50-74, a breast screen every two years, through a population-based screening program like BreastScreen NSW, is still the best way to detect breast cancer early – before it can be seen or felt.

Deon Adamson Manager, Breastscreen NSW (Greater Western), said with more than 250 local women expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, women need to put themselves first and book a screening.

“If you’re aged 50 to 74, make breast screening a priority. It only takes 20 minutes and no doctor’s referral is needed,” Ms Adamson said.

“Early detection significantly increases a person’s chance of survival and can greatly reduce the need for invasive treatment like a mastectomy.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and BreastScreen NSW is encouraging clients, staff and the community to Tell a Friend about the importance of regular screening and how to book an appointment.

A record 36,500 women booked their breast screen in October 2024.

Art, Craft & Photo Comp results The winners of Cobar Arts Council’s 2025 Art, Craft and Photography Competition were announced on Friday night at the official opening of this year’s exhibition at the Cobar Railway Station.

Sponsored by Aurelia Metals/Peak Gold Mines, this year’s event was celebrated alongside the announcement and display of the winners of the Western Landcare NSW 2025 Life and Light Photography Competition.

The results of Cobar Art’s Council’s competition were as follows: In the Drawing section Michel Chillingsworth won first place with Jan Johnson second.

Jan also collected a Highly Commended award for another of her drawings.

In the Oils or Acrylic Painting category first place went to Jarly Matson’s entry with Anita Neate collecting second prize and Jayde Laurelin third.

In the Abstract/Contemporary section, Jaymee Manns finished as the winner with Rebekah King second.

Elizabeth Whiteman’s and Iryna Barrett’s entries were Highly Commended.

Michel Chillingsworth won the Portrait– People/Animals section with Rebekah King collecting second prize.

Two of Jan Johnson’s entries share equal first place in the Pottery section with two of Natalia Papierniak’s entries earning second place and a Highly Commended award.

Joan Maiden took out first and second place in the Sculpture section with Aimee Freeman and Joanne Houghton both Highly Commended.

Michaela Tonissen won the Photography section with Elizabeth Whiteman second.

Both also had other entries that were Highly Commended by the judges.

In the Handcraft section (using threads/ fibres), Betsy Chandler was the winner with Tarly Matson second.

Sue Cox and another of Betsy Chandler’s entries shared third place.

In Handcraft (creative stitchery), Iryna Barrett’s entries took out first and second place with entries by Simonne Mackay and Jenny Ilet being Highly Commended.

In the Papercraft section, Jan Johnson was the winner and another of her entries placed equal second with Joan Maiden’s entry.

Aimee Freeman was Highly Commended.

Tarly Jackson won the Handcraft (any medium) category with second place going to Rebekah King with Elizabeth Whiteman third.

Two of Terry Mitchell’s entries in this second were Highly Commended by the judges.

Matt Wang won first and second place in the Woodwork category.

In the High School Years 10-12 section, Jaina Chandler cleaned up winning first, second and third places for her entries.

In the Primary School Years 3-6 section, two of Leala Engelbrecht’s entries were awarded equal first place while entries by both Grace Mackay and Amelia Freeman were Highly Commended.

Mount Hope Mining Limited’s recently completed maiden drilling program at their Mt Solitary prospect 3km east of the historical Mt Hope copper mine, has delivered standout results.

Managing Director and CEO Fergus Kiley said the drilling program had exceeded their expectations.

It delivered “standout intercepts including 19m at 4.5 g/t gold with a spectacular 1m at 50 g/t”.

“These are exceptional results for a first pass RC campaign and confirm the high-grade potential of this underexplored area,” Mr Kiley said.

“Importantly, this drilling has provided the foundation for the first modern geological model of Mt Solitary, allowing us to better understand the structural controls on mineralisation and to design a targeted follow-up program to test down-plunge extensions and parallel lodes.

“The upside here is significant: Mt Solitary is an exciting project itself; however, it also sits within a 7.5km-long corridor of gold mineralisation extending south toward the Mt Solar Project,” he said.

Solid shooting at pistol club event Some solid performances were had at the Cobar Amateur Pistol Club’s 25m Centre Fire Sports Matches on Sunday.

Geoff Passfield led the way in the first of the two matches conducted this week.

Passfield had a score of 429 off pistol, which coupled with his handicap of 178, had him finishing with a total score of 607.

It also earned him a new handicap of 154.

Hot on his heels was Scott Toomey with 256 off pistol and, together with his handicap of 350, Toomey finished with a total score of 606.

Toomey also now holds a new handicap of 310.

Chris Driver was consistent across both events, scoring 554-44-598 and 551-44-595 respectively.

Other results from the day were: Michael Garbutt 520-62-582; Adam Green 513-68581 and 413-109-522; Robert Neate 478-48526; and in his second match, Geoff Passfield scored 340-178-518.

Anita Neate started strongly but was unable to complete her match, recording a DNF (did not finish) result.

This Sunday, the club will host a 25m Rapid Fire event.

Great turn out for the first triathlon event of the season There was a great turnout on Sunday for the Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad’s (CATS) first triathlon of the 2025/2026 season with 22 competitors taking part.

Thirteen teams and individual competitors ranged in age from seven year old Mason Hill up to the club’s veteran, Chris Powell, at age 63.

Parker Cryer finished as the winner of the Long Course (500m swim/ 20km ride/ 4km run) with a time of 1hour, 26 minutes and 54 seconds.

Isaac Theakston was first in the Short course (300m swim/ 10km ride/ 2km run) with a good time of 34 minutes 30 seconds.

Team MAN (Mason Hill, Archie Fugar and Nixon Shields) were first over the line in the Try-a-Tri event (200m swim/ 5km ride/ 2km run) with a combined time of 40.14.

The handicapped event winner was the team of BB and Georgia (Breaze Fairfull and Georgia Baker).

Second in the handicapped division was Claudine Griffiths (who was still wearing her 800km Tour de OROC ride jersey) and third was Team Man (Mason, Archie and Nixon).

The CATS hold monthly triathlon handicapped events throughout the season which concludes in March 2026.

The club also hosts an Australia Day sprint event.

The Geckos start the new Touch season off with a good win

The Geckos (pictured above) kicked off the new Seniors Touch competition with a 9-5 win over the Blue Balloons on Thursday at Tom Knight Memorial Oval.

Cougars beaten

The Cobar players in the Castlereagh Cougars women’s rugby league teams had their shortest trip of the competition last weekend (just a 600km round trip), when the Cougars took on the Goannas at Dubbo’s Apex Oval.

The Goannas hosted the Round 5 matches of the Western Women’s Rugby League competition on Saturday and dominated the day to win four games.

The Cougars Opens went down to the Goannas 36-10, the Under 18s were beaten 28-4, the Under 16s lost 42-4 and the Goannas were also too good for the Cougars Under 14s taking the game 28-4.

The Under 12s played an uncontested game.

This week the Cougars Opens, Under 18s, Under 16s and Under 14s teams have a bye.

The Under 12s however won’t get a rest this weekend as they are scheduled play the Lachlan 12s Team Purple in Parkes.

A new season of Touch kicked off on Thursday at Ward Oval with The Geckos and Pinky Dinkies recording first round wins in the Seniors (13-16 years) competition.

The Geckos raced in nine tries to beat Blue Balloons 9-5 in their match.

Josh Francisco led the scoring for The Geckos with four tries for the match with Billy George contributing three points with his three tries. Their other points came from a try each to Jack Dunn and Ryder Anderson.

Ryan Mugugia (2), Kai McCosker (2) and Billy Watt crossed for tries for Blue Balloons, Josh Francisco, Maddi Jeffery (The Geckos) and Kai McCosker shared in the referee’s Best & Fairest points.

Pinky Dinkies scored their first round win over the Duckies.

After leading 2-0 at the break, they went on to finish with a 6-3 win.

Harlym Curtis (2), Tom Francisco and Will Oborn touched down for a try each, along with Holly Watt who added two points to their final tally with her try. (Female tries are worth double points.)

In reply, Lachlan Brookman and Skyla Fairful scored touchdowns for Duckies.

B&F points were earned by Rowdy Barton (Pinky Dinkies), Harlym Curtis and Tommy George (Duckies).

In the 9-12 years Juniors competition, Red Hot Chilli Runners finished with a big winning margin of 11-3 over the Tigers.

Kasalia Fakahua (3) and Taj Goonrey (3) led the scoring for the Chillies, with Leo Neale and Maddox Best also adding a point each to their big total.

Points for the Tigers came from a try each to Keelan Atuau and Indie Burke, with Indie’s try worth double points.

Cole Barraclough (Chillies), Keelan Atuau and Indie Burke shared in the match’s B&F points.

The other Juniors game was a thriller with the Banana Splits staging a second half fightback in their match with Blue Cheese.

Down 3-6 at the half time break, the Bananas won the second half 5-3, however Blue Cheese held out to win the match 9-8.

Points for Blue Cheese came from tries to Jason Cleary Thou (3), Bria-June Brookman, George Wainiqolo, Hugo Josephson and Lacy Garozzo.

Banana Splits’ try scorers were Dusty McDonald (2), Alfie Toomey (2), Billy Dunn, Jax Murrell and Rosie George.

Jason Cleary Thou, Hugo Josephson and Kade Taylor (Banana Splits) shared in the referee’s B&F points.

Blossoms were out in full bloom in their match with Concrete Cowboys easily winning 10-3.

Sosie Barton and Kai Taylor, with two tries each, led the scoring for Blossoms.

New team to the competition, Rock Dogs, were handed a Touch lesson by Rusty Snails who demolished them 17-0.

Their quicks, Holly Watt, Mark McBride and Nathan Prince, each crossed three times.

Another new side, Full Tilt made a good showing early against Mako’s but were eventually beaten 8-4.
