Golfie contributes over $93,000

More names for memorial

Stage 2 of Cobar’s War Memorial in Drummond Park was unveiled on Saturday afternoon as part of this year’s Running On Empty Festival celebrations. The festival has helped to fund the next stage which lists the names of locals who have served in Modern Conflicts. The Rotary Club Of Cobar will direct their ClubGRANTS funding of $7,500 to host the Tour de OROC ride, a fundraiser for the Macquarie Home Stay which provides accommodation for residents of remote areas of Western NSW undergoing medical treatment in Dubbo.

St John’s Catholic School P & F Association will add their $1,000 grant funding to their current fundraising project for new playground equipment.

Cobar Clay Target Club’s $2,000 grant funding will assist them to pay for lighting costs for their next Annual Golden Clay event as well as help purchase solar panels and a battery for their Skeet discipline.

Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS) will be able to purchase a new club bike for adults with their funding of $900 which will enable parents to be able to participate in triathlon events alongside their children.

The Cobar Amateur Pistol Club’s $2,000 funding will go towards renovations to the club’s facilities.

ClubGrants funding also went to the Cobar Bowling & Golf Club Lady Golfers, $4,000 for course maintenance and $2,000 for the Junior Golf program.

Funding of $10,000 went to the Wings4Kidz medical flight service which assists sick kids from regional NSW to access specialist medical services in Sydney.

There are currently seven families from the area who have benefited from this service.

Golfie contributes over $93,000 to local community groups The Cobar Bowling & Golf Club has handed out more than $93,000 to 11 local and community groups as part of this year’s ClubGRANTS program.

The ClubGRANTS Scheme in NSW requires registered clubs with over $1 million in annual gaming machine profits to contribute financial or in-kind support to local community services, programs, and projects, in return for a tax rebate.

The scheme aims to support community welfare, social services, community development, community health, and employment assistance, with funds distributed through three different categories.

Clubs participate in the scheme by allocating grants and providing annual returns, with the NSW Government overseeing and reviewing the program's effectiveness The Cobar Senior Citizen Amenities Org Inc (Brennan Centre), was among this year’s recipients.

They will use their $12,000 funding on their barbecue/outdoor kitchen project so residents and their families can socialise together.

The Copper City Men’s Shed’s $5,000 grant means their metal workshop gets a welder upgrade which will enable shed members to complete more complex community group projects.

Organised by the Cobar Dust Bowl Fuel Burners, club president Mick Haines said while entries were down a bit on previous years, there was a great number of very well presented 57 Chevs for this year’s event.

“There were also quite a few modern cars this year, a few “sleepers”, one old Volvo had a big V8 engine in it, and the one-tonners were nice, but I’ve got a soft spot for them.

“The dark green panel van, The Player, while it didn’t win, it was however a show winning car, it was really well done,” Mick said.

Running on Empty Festival organiser John de Bruin said the festival had helped to raise funds to build the town’s war memorial, was an economic drawcard for the community and the funds raised from this year will ensure there is seed funding for the 2027 event.

Cobar Shire Council has been successful in winning a $1.5m grant to upgrade bathrooms at the Lilliane Brady Village (LBV) aged care facility.

The grant from the Australian Government’s Aged Care Capital Assistance Program will provide $1,524,613 to upgrade 15 aging and non-compliant resident bathrooms at the LBV. The facilities, unchanged since 1982, no longer meet safety or accessibility standards.

Mayor Jarrod Marsden was thrilled with the funding announcement.

“The project will create modern, compliant, accessible bathrooms to improve safety, hygiene and comfort for residents.

“The upgrades will strengthen the service’s long-term viability, reduce the risk of significant capacity loss and ensure residents can continue to access safe, high-quality aged care locally,” Cr Marsden said.

“Whilst the village is pretty much at full capacity, we have been able to stage the work such that it will be completed with as minimal as reasonably practicable disruption to the everyday lives of the residents.”

The project is expected to take around 18 months to complete.

Butler looking for local views on National Parks With concern rising about National Parks in western NSW, Member for Barwon, Roy Butler, wants to know what local people think should change about the expansion and management of National Parks.

Local views will form the basis of the changes Mr Butler advocates for.

Mr Butler has released a survey on his website to reveal the range of views among people living in communities alongside western National Parks.

“I am concerned that land is being bought in western NSW for new National Parks without the appropriate studies to determine what is being protected or what the impact will be on the community,” said Mr Butler.

“I’ve also seen that the promised tourism revenue and jobs when National Parks are created quickly evaporate.

“When no tourism infrastructure is built, few tourists visit.

“So, I want to know if locals have seen environmental or economic benefits from western National Parks?” Mr Butler asks.

He said neighbouring landholders are concerned about the way western National Parks are managed.

“Western National Parks can function as breeding grounds for pest animals and vegetation as they don’t make adequate control efforts – and some don’t maintain fences either,” Mr Butler said.

“Concerns have also been raised about the hollowing out of local communities due to the loss of a working property and the loss of rates paid to Councils.

“What do people think should change about the management of western National Parks?

“Before I start advocating for changes, I want to make sure I’ve consulted those who know the issues best – local people,” Mr Butler concluded.

Innovate with nbn grants

Federal Member for Parkes Jamie Chaffey is urging local businesses to consider applying for the 2025 Innovate with nbn Grants Program.

The program, delivered in partnership with the Regional Australia Institute, is celebrating its sixth year of supporting regional businesses that are using the nbn network to drive innovation, improve productivity, and deliver meaningful social outcomes.

“Businesses in the Parkes electorate are no strangers to overcoming the challenges of connecting and communicating that come with living and doing business in a regional area,” Mr Chaffey said.

“The region has many innovative businesses that have found ways to make the nbn work not only for them, but to build a better community.

“I urge businesses that are using the nbn network to help regional Australians live an even better life to consider applying for one of these grants.”

There are seven categories: agriculture, arts and tourism, education, health, Indigenous business, sport and recreation, and women in regional business.

Each category winner will receive $15,000, with an additional $20,000 awarded to the overall winner.

“Some people have heard about them, but then they’ve never seen one so I like to get out and about so people can see it.”

Andrew has learnt a bit about the history of this particular Graham.

“A businessman who had a tooling company in Melbourne, this was his car originally.

“He bought two and the other one was a for his travelling salesman, so I guess they were pretty reliable.”

When Andrew originally bought this particular Graham, it was all in pieces.

“You could drive it, but all the guards, all the running boards, the bonnet, all these front, bumper bars, everything it was off it.

“So I just bolted it all back together.”

And being an electrician by trade, he also gave it a practical upgrade and changed it from a 6 volt to 12 volts.

“That way I’ve got better lighting.”

Andrew’s has no plans of repainting or customizing it.

“Other owners start to do them up but they never finish. I’ll just drive it,” Andrew said.

“I’m up to about nine cars now [he’s also got a ‘57 Chev], six are registered and a few Andrew McCrae drove his 1938 Graham all the way from Huskisson on the south coast to projects to come, but I’ve stopped buying and now I’m just getting going what I’ve got.”

For the third year local golfer Narelle Kriz has been nominated for a prestigious volunteer award and, while she doesn’t do it for the accolades, Narelle said the recognition still means a lot.

“I am overjoyed and humbled to be continuously nominated,” Narelle told The Cobar Weekly.

“I do not do it for the recognition, but it is always good to know that what I’m doing is making a difference.

“The nominees in these awards often come from such big clubs, so to have my name representing our rural club on such a high level is truly an honour.”

A proud Cobar local, Narelle has been a passionate volunteer in the sport for years, drawing on a lifelong connection with golf.

“I have a strong passion for golf having played since I was a junior,” Narelle said.

“I was taught by the Lady Golfers at that time, so by volunteering I feel like I’m giving back to the community that supported me.”

Now president of Ladies Golf, she runs junior clinics, delivers NSW Golf School programs in various rural communities, leads junior girls’ programs, and was the driving force behind bringing the PGA Legends Tour Pro-Am to Cobar, a major win for the region.

“Through my previous golfing experience I have made contacts with many professionals who had said they missed playing out here,” Narelle said.

“From there I facilitated bringing the Legends Tour Pro-Am event here. This event was such a success that they requested to hold the inaugural PGA Legends Tour Sandgreen Championships here and now want us to host it again.”

Narelle credits early mentors like Dot Chalker, and her aunt, Anne Maidens, and more recently, Golf Professional Gary Begg, for encouraging her journey.

“Golf is an inter-generational sport,” she said.

Cougars record three wins against Woodbridge

Long, long standing record

The Castlereagh Cougars women’s rugby league teams took on Woodbridge at Cowra on Saturday for Round 2 of the Western Women’s Rugby League competition.

The Cougars, which contain a number of Cobar players, had mixed results with wins over Woodbridge in their Under 12s, Under 14s and Under 18s matches.

The Under 16s and Opens Cougars teams went down to Woodbridge.

In Round 3 games, the Cougars will host the Mudgee Dragons this Sunday in Coonabarabran.

While hopeful of a strong showing, WAP knows how tough Dubbo can be.

A very long standing 31 year old Cobar Little A’s record was broken in the club’s first week of competition this year. “We’ve made no changes to training or gear,” WAP said.

“Just letting him do his thing.”

Stablemate, A Tender Lady, will also line up in the 1,000m sprint, though WAP’s still waiting to lock in a jockey.

“There will be plenty of jockeys there on the day who will be keen for a ride,” he said.

WAP is hoping for a good result in the barrier draw, which will be done tomorrow.

“It would be nice to draw one to five. We don’t want to draw 12.”

Joining the Dubbo mission are two more of WAP’s runners, Gee Whiz Johnny and Mr Invincible, both of whom recently placed at Griffith, for other races on Sunday.

Dubbo’s Picnic Championships Day is one of the biggest meets in the region, and for Local horse trainer, Wap Prisk is confident his horse, Mr Pointer, will run well this WAP and his crew, it’ll also be a day of reflection. Continued Page 25.

According to the Bactrians’ Coach, Shane Leahy, by the second game, there was some great rugby played.

“It was rewarding to see the regular trainers take what they had learnt from training to a game,” Coach Shane said.

“All in attendance today at our own gala day continued to absorb the knowledge and direction provided by Zone Development Officer (DO), Sarah Pearce and her very qualified assistant [Danielle Plummer] who was referee today.

“The girls are now very keen, from tight forward Sammy Ward to speedster Toea Wisil; they are planning on travelling to Orange in November to line up for Cobar in a Tens tournament.

“There is an amazing abundance of talent in this group, and the DO was impressed.”

There was also great camaraderie and sportsmanship shown by the players.
