An Australian welcome

Police assist with raid on business

Local police assisted NSW Health inspectors from Sydney with an inspection of a local business last week.

Police and health inspectors conducted a search of a Marshall Street business at around 8am last Wednesday.

An amount of illegal tobacco and vaping products were seized during the search.

NSW Health issued infringement notices to the business and its employees.

Health inspectors also carried out business searches in Bourke and Nyngan last week as part of a western area compliance check.

Suspended drivers

Georgina Walker (from South Africa), Rose Hunter (New Zealand), Mihiri Kankanamge (Sri Lanka) and Michael Sargent (New Zealand) were officially welcomed as Australian citizens at a citizenship ceremony at the Cobar Shire Council Chambers on Thursday. In the absence of the Mayor, Council’s general manager Peter Vlatko officiated at the ceremony where the four pledged their commitment to Australia which was their final step to becoming an Australian citizen.

A 46 year old local male had his driver’s licence suspended last week after he was detected by police to be driving under the influence of drugs.

The man was stopped by police last Thursday for the purpose of a random breath test and tested positive for cannabis and methamphetamine.

The man’s licence was suspended for 24 hours.

Police will await the results of testing before taking further action.

Police also suspended the licence of a 16 year old local male on Thursday.

The unaccompanied learner was detected driving in Marshall Street on Thursday night.

He was issued with an infringement notice and his licence was suspended for three months.

Cobar hosts Minister, MP and Western Division councils NSW Minister for Agriculture, Minister for Regional New South Wales, and Minister for Western New South Wales Tara Moriarty was in Cobar on Monday for a meeting of Western Division councils.

State Member for Barwon Roy Butler also joined the meeting to discuss Regional Development Trust funding.

Minister Moriarty said the government is committed to listening and providing tailored support for regional areas.

The Minister announced they were finalising the funding for the Regional Development Trust which aims to deliver sustainable and strategic investment with a focus on priorities that make a real difference to regional communities.

She said the Trust had already delivered funding for airstrip upgrades and airline subsidies and wanted to speak to councils to ensure plans for additional targeted funding through the Regional Development Trust were directed where they were needed most.

Minister Moriarty said the Trust is seen as a new model for regional investment.

Issues raised at Monday’s meeting by council delegates included Health, Aged Care and Service Integration and their concerns about aged care facilities being restricted by outdated regulations.

The Minister acknowledged there was a need for better coordination between federal, state, and local governments.

Specific issues were raised about staffing shortages, funding gaps, and duplication of services (eg aged care next to hospitals).

Land use and National Parks expansion was another topic of discussion with some strong opposition voiced about the purchase of productive land for National Parks.

A lack of community consultation was also raised as a major issue.

Councils expressed concerns over the economic impact these land sales were having on small communities, how they would be affected by a loss of population and services, and the environmental mismanagement postacquisition. There were calls for mixed land use (eg continued grazing on parkland) and a suggestion for compensation or rate support for affected councils.

Also discussed was energy transition and power station closures and Crown Land reviews.

The Minister reiterated a commitment to ongoing dialogue, respect for local knowledge, and collaborative problemsolving.

One-on-one meetings between Council delegates and the Minister followed.

According to Pearl’s nomination, the 17 year old packs a lot of volunteering into her week.

The Cobar High School student and crosscountry runner gives her time to the student council, supporting student health and wellbeing programs, the Little Athletics Club, Show Girl and Tourism Advisory committees and many other local programs and events.

Pearl also works part time and is currently in the United States competing at school cross country events.

Also at yesterday’s awards, Nepalese community advocate for Dubbo, Ramesh Sharma, was named the Adult Volunteer of the Year; Dubbo grief counsellor Kerry Frost was the Senior Volunteer of the Year; North Yeoval Ambulance NSW Community First Responder volunteer Christopher Milne was the Emergency Volunteer of the Year; and the National Association for Loss and Grief (NALAG) was named the Orana Volunteer Team of the Year.

Moorambilla Voices, which encourages young people to sing, dance, learn Taiko drumming and express themselves through visual arts, started recruiting in February this year. Kids from Years 3 to 12 throughout the western area were selected to attend workshops and residency camps where they learnt a range of creative skills which were showcased at gala performances on the weekend in Dubbo. Claudine took up running last year when she needed to lose weight for a knee replacement.

She found she really enjoyed running but the training she was doing for the marathon was putting too much stress on her knee.

“I thought I might have been, but it turns out I’m not quite up to it.

“My body prefers riding, rather than running at the moment, and my knee’s been really good since I started riding,’ she said.

After talking to Trudy Griffiths (her cousinin-law), Claudine decided to give the Tour de OROC a crack.

Trudy had also planned to do this year’s ride (for a third time) but has however had to pull out for family reasons.

“I’m not even a bike rider at all. I’m a complete amateur,” Claudine admitted.

“I got my road bike last Christmas.

“The most bike riding I’ve done is the local triathlons and that’s it.

“The longest ride I’d done really up until probably the last six weeks has been 10kms “Then I did 90km on Sunday. It took me just over four hours.

Claudine said it’s taken her a while to get used to riding with cleats (the clipless pedal that attaches to the bottom of her shoe) but is proud that she hasn’t fallen off in the last three days wearing them.

“I’m still very “unco” trying to get my water bottle to have a drink while I’m riding and I’m definitely not used to riding with others.”

However after recently riding 40km with a friend (which Claudine said made the ride seem like only 10km), she’s now looking forward to riding with the Tour de OROC group.

“I hope to learn a lot. They tell me that if you get tired, they put you in the middle of the group and the peloton will drag you along.”

“My first day’s ride from Dubbo to Warren on Monday is about 110km. Second day, I think it’s about 80km, third day is Nyngan to Cobar, then the next day is Cobar to Bourke and then 90km to Brewarrina.”

It’s the Cobar to Bourke leg that Claudine thinks will be her toughest test.

“I’m going to try and do whatever I can.

“My aim is to ride the whole distance.”

The Tour de OROC cycling event is a fundraising initiative of the Rotary Club of Dubbo South and covers more than 800km across the western region.

It raises funds for the Macquarie Home Stay accommodation facility in Dubbo which provides essential accommodation for people from regional and remote communities needing medical treatment in Dubbo.

“I just think the services like the Macquarie Home Stay are just so important for rural communities,” Claudine said.

Cobar’s seniors got together on Friday morning at the Brennan Centre to Dance Against Dementia. Research has shown that dancing has many health benefits, including boosting brain power and function. Some studies have also linked dancing with a reduced risk of dementia. The annual, national Dance Against Dementia fundraiser aims to raise awareness about dementia. Dolly Parton festival brings tourists to town

While the Dolly Parton Festival may be happening later this month in Narromine, it’s also helping to bring tourists to Cobar and the wider western region.

A rail adventure around the central west of NSW takes in the Dolly Parton Festival in Narromine, and will also be making a stop in Cobar next week.

The private rail journey offers passengers the opportunity to explore the region and celebrate Aussie bush hospitality.

While in Cobar the group of approximately 50 Dolly fans will take a tour of the Great Cobar Museum and if there’s time, they also plan to make a visit to Cobar’s Sound Chapel.

The rail trip celebrates Dolly’s incredibly joyous attitude to life and her legendary philanthropy as it travels on what are normally freight-only lines, including the Inland Rail from Parkes and the branch line to Cobar.

The tour offers live music, pub meals, museum and cultural site visits leading up to the big day in Narromine, when the town hosts a street parade, markets, and a concert complete with tribute bands, local artists and no end of Dolly look-alikes.

So next week if you see any Dolly Parton look-alikes roaming around town (or perhaps staff dressed up serving customers in a local café), rest assured they aren’t lost, they are just on a great rail adventure!

Works starts on extensions at Ngalli Preschool Building work is set to commence today on the extensions to the Ngalli Preschool at the Cobar Public School.

The work involves alterations and additions to two classrooms to create a new preschool space for the existing Ngalli Preschool facilities at the school.

There will also be construction of a new covered outdoor play area and new outdoor storage shed.

The NSW Department of Education has advised parents, carers and the community that the construction will continue throughout school term 4.

The department has advised there are known locations within the school where the work is taking place to contain bonded asbestos.

“Safety measures, including monitoring, will be in place,” a NSW Department of Education spokesperson said.

All work is being done in accordance with work, health and safety laws and the NSW Department of Education’s Asbestos Management Plan.

The school has advised parents and carers, that due to the construction work, some students and staff will be relocated to another building onsite to continue their learning.

Fairways are fast

The results from the week’s men’s golf competitions indicate the dry weather has sped up the fairways with good scores coming in across all three days.

There were 19 players on Saturday playing an individual Stableford.

It was a day where the “guns’ came to the fore with three players, Alec Fraser, Garry ‘Wilko’ Wilkin and Brian Russ all playing well under their handicaps and scoring a healthy 39 points.

Wilko was one-under par and Fraser oneover, but it was Russ who won on a countback. Wilko came second and Fraser third.

Fourth place went to Wayne ‘Tweet’ Josephson with 37 points and Greg Clark was 5th with 36.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Wilko on the 3rd and 7th holes, Fraser (8th), Tweet on the 11th and Clark claimed the 15th.

With a lot of local players competing in the Nyngan Open on Sunday (See Page 22 for results), there were only eight players for the Par event at home.

Scott Mayne won the day with a plus six score followed by Geoff Rorke one shot behind.

Cohan Nicholson was third with plus three.

No surprise, Mr Consistency, Bill Fugar, recorded a square card and the rest of the scores were all in the minus range.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Colin Green on the 3rd hole, Max Phillips (7th) and (8th).

Barely a point separated the two triples teams throughout their Social Bowls match on the Golfie greens on Saturday afternoon.

Andrew Reilly, Paul Kershaw and Allan Gardoll eventually finished as +2 winners over Mick McManus, Greg Clark and Peta Zazoniuk.

It was a cracker of a day to be on the bowling greens on Sunday.

Craig ‘Duck’ Grimmond and David ‘Turk’ Kershaw had a big win over Tony Polack and Bel Starr winning by a whopper of a +20 margin.

Team Duck shot away from the start accumulating an early five shot lead which Team Polly tried valiantly to rein in.

Just when the margin was a more respectable two points, Duck & Co steamed ahead again winning five ends with four shot advantages!

The game between Shane Carter and Lex Lowe and their opponents, David ‘Ooze’ Knight and Jesci Clark was very close all day.

Team Carter eventually won by +6.

CATS commence 2025/2026 season with a Duathlon event The Cobar Athletics & Triathlon Squad (CATS) held their first event of the 2025/2026 season on Sunday.

There was a field of six competing as individuals along with another four in the teams event.

Molly Birch, with a time of 26 min 18 sec, won the Short Course (1.2km run/5km ride/1.2km run).

The first team over the line in the Long Course event (2.4km run/10km ride/2.4km run) were the Big Talkers, Greg McKervey and Caleb Theakston, in a time of 42.15.

Parker Cryer was the first individual finisher of the Long Course with a time of 47.09.

The Short Course runner-up was Katrina Francisco, with Swoop Loops, Henry Knight and Tom Jones, the Long Course Team runners-up and Harry Franks was the Long Course runner-up.

Two more teams dropped from the darts competition

The knockout rounds of the Cobar local darts competition continued last Wednesday night with Golfie Gophers and Golfie Ones & Fives now eliminated from the competition.

Off the road and hangin’ on the edge

The 2025 Cliffhanger Off Road Event, which features tough winch courses, long navigation stages and fast creek runs for 4x4 racing, was held at Mt Gap Station north of Cobar last week. The event has been running for more than 20 years and attracts competitors from around Australia to test their vehicles and their four wheel driving skills in some very unforgiving terrain.
