Principal’s Message

At the end of Semester 1, the Northside Christian College community gathered at Encompass Church for Primary and Secondary School Chapel services. This event provided us with an opportunity to focus on what is important for us as a community.

We are grateful to be part of a Christ-centred school community where we can learn more about the character of God through a wide range of experiences, including our Chapel services. During the Chapel service, our College Chaplain, Jared, reminded us about of our theme for 2023, Goodness, and our theme verse.

As you know, our theme verse for 2023 comes from Psalm 34:8 (NIV):

“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.”

Throughout the year, we have actively explored in many ways about the Goodness of God. It has been special to reflect on how this verse invites us to draw closer to God to experience His love and the goodness surrounding Him.

We have also valued the chance to reflect on what it means to find refuge in God. May we continue to remember throughout the year, that we can find refuge in God in all circumstances – good and bad.

At Northside, our overarching theme every year guides us as a College community in developing a deeper understanding of the character of God. Our Core Values also highlight our desire to develop a deeper understanding of the character of God. Our Core Values guide our interactions with one another, support us as we work together in learning communities, and inspire us as we aim to draw closer to God. Our Values at Northside include: Love, Faith, Hope, Community, Service, Grace, Humility, Integrity and Perseverance.

Thank you to our team of staff and parents and carers who have supported our students with their learning and character development throughout Semester 1.Our Vision at Northside is “To be an inspirational Christian learning community.” We pray we can continue to collaborate and work together to transform lives through Christ and the wonder of learning.

May we continue to be guided by God’s Word as we work together as a Christian learning community at Northside Christian College.

Year 5 CYC City Camp

The Year 5 Camp was such a fun camp where students were able to explore Melbourne for themselves, as well as with their class.

I saw students step up and lead their group through the city using a map. They were able to explore and see the variety of Melbourne, both old and new.

I felt that this camp really allowed students to develop their initiative. It provided space to develop resiliency through being away from their home and parents; to develop independence through decision making and team building by working in a group.

As a teacher, this was by far the best camp yet!

6 Northside Christian College - The Vine
Students went on a tour of the city and stayed at the CYC City campsite. Mrs Sharon Simic Primary Teacher Student enjoyed eating out.

Year 5 CYC City Camp continued...

The Year 5 students had an awesome time at camp. On the first day we learnt about different sculpture art on a tour with the lovely team at ACCA gallery, one sculpture was even part playground on squishy ground! It was a cool experience.

After we settled into our cabins, we split into teams and played a scavenger hunt race. The students were pumped to find all the things on the list (some of which included the view of the reading room in State Library and the iconic Royal Arcade). They had to take photos of these places and raced back to CYC camp. They all had a blast!

We had a delicious dinner, and then we walked to Southbank to view the fireshow.

Lastly, we had hot chocolates while listening to a Bible story and prayer before bed. It was such a humbling and heartwarming thing to see them so engaged.

On the second day of camp, we started our day at the bustling Queen Victoria Market. It tied in nicely with our Business and Economics Inquiry topic and we analysed the advertising strategies each stall was using. We also had heaps of fun looking at all the hand-made treasures there and appreciated how creative people are.

Lunch was enjoyed in the Flagstaff gardens and we had a nice play while the weather was still holding up. We managed to escape most of the rain by the time we arrived at the Old Melbourne Gaol. Our tour guide was very engaging as we listened to fascinating stories of its history. The students found it a cool experience being amongst the cells.

The students had a blast while they played a game of bowling. They got pretty competitive but also encouraged each other and gave each other advice with different strategies.

By 5:00pm we made it to a Choral Evensong service at St Paul’s Cathedral. It was amazing to see how respectful the Year Fives were. The service was beautiful and we had a great discussion about the differences between this service and how we worship at our own churches.

We made it back for dinner in time by 6:15pm. We ended the night with a movie with hot chocolate and popcorn.

On the last day of Camp we made it just in time for our final appointment with a tour of the Chinese Museum. They learnt about the history of Chinese immigration in Australia which really supported what they learn in Chinese at school. They had about an hour of free time with their group before we headed back to school.

Praise the Lord, He blessed us with such a wonderful camp!

Year 2H Antarctica Inquiry Session

As part of our Inquiry subject, the students had the incredible opportunity to explore the wonders of Antarctica, the icy continent. To commemorate their expedition, each student diligently crafted a postcard to convey their experiences to loved ones back home. These postcards showcased their knowledge of Antarctica, as they included fascinating facts about its unique ecosystem and wildlife. Furthermore, our budding scientists conducted a captivating science experiment, investigating how fat can effectively keep animals warm in the harsh climate of Antarctica. The children engaged in various enjoyable activities, fostering their imagination and creativity.

Prep History Presentations

History lessons throughout Semester 1 saw the Preps learn about special events, memories and celebrations from their past. There was a strong focus on the important people in their lives and the way different families celebrate in different ways.

The Preps shared their own history with the visiting Preps from the other classes. The visitors came prepared to say, “Tell me about your history.”

This was a great time of sharing and getting to know one another.

Prep Farm Excursion

On May 3rd, the Preps were excited about their trip to Bundoora Farm, which they had been eagerly anticipating. They were bundled up and ready to explore all that the farm had to offer. During their visit, they had many experiences that taught them about living things and how to care for them. They were able to meet and feed a variety of animals, including hamsters, goats, a horse, and chickens. They also learned about the origins of food, such as how grains are turned into wheat to make flour and how milk is turned into cream and butter. The Preps were kept busy all day, tending to the animals and garden, cooking scones, and even meeting some of the local wildlife like kangaroos and emus. It was a fantastic day that the Preps thoroughly enjoyed. We would like to thank the staff at Bundoora Farm for the great program and all the parent helpers who accompanied us. Your presence made the day even more special!

Year 9G Pushup Challenge

I have been a part of the push-up challenge for a number of years and this year our Year 9 students asked to be involved. They have really taken to the challenge and seem to respond well to the data that is being shared.

Each day, we had a class goal that is based on a statistic in the area of mental health, with articles and research provided for further reading.

One of our goals was 130 push-ups. 130 calls are made to Lifeline every hour.

The students have gone above and beyond and aimed to complete the team total each day as individuals.

Year 9G completed 25,553 push-ups combined since we started.

We have set $1000.00 as our fundraising goal, but there is a page if you feel you would like to contribute.

Year 8 Geography Field Trip to Point Lonsdale

On Tuesday 16th May, Year 8G and 8R Geography students went to the coastal town and beach-front and light-house area at Point Lonsdale on the Bellarine Peninsula. They enjoyed socialising on the almost two hour trip to get there.

The purpose of the trip was to undertake field work to complement the theory learned in Geography classes regarding coastal landscapes and landforms. Students were able to observe in a real-world setting the geographical processes studied in class. They recorded evidence of the processes of weathering and erosion on coastal landforms and human impact on the area.

Ms Wang (Year 8 Chinese teacher) accompanied the group, enabling the students to integrate their learning and skills in Chinese language with their knowledge and skills in coastal geography. The observations and data gathered and recorded provided students with the information they needed to complete the writing up of a formal geographical field report back in class, which was the key assessment task for this unit of work.

The weather was kind on the day, and the tide at the beach and headlands area was obligingly low, revealing the rockpools and inter-tidal marine life. Students were also able to look across the headlands of Port Phillip Bay from their position at Point Lonsdale and see in the distance Point Nepean National Park, Portsea and Sorrento on the Mornington Peninsula.

Thank you to all staff involved in the preparation and running of this field trip.

Thriving Minds Conference

A selection of Year 11 and 12 students recently attended the prestigious philosophical Thriving Minds Conference held at Scotch College. The conference featured speakers from Oxford University, Julie Arliss and Dr. Christopher O’Neill, who captivated our students with their insightful presentations. The topics covered were diverse and thought-provoking, ranging from examining epistemology and understanding the concept of knowing what you know and what you don’t know, to gaining insights into the challenging entry questions at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Additionally, students had the opportunity to explore the fascinating science of happiness and delve into the intriguing implications of social physics. It was an enriching experience that undoubtedly broadened our students’ perspectives and fueled their intellectual curiosity.

INSPiRE

Prep INSPiRE

The students in Prep INSPiRE have been working hard to improve their problem-solving skills both independently and in collaboration with others. They have been introduced to the “learning pit” concept, which has helped them to tackle challenges with enthusiasm. Additionally, they have been learning new mathematical games and terminology, including concepts like “construct” and “number sentences.” During a recent lesson, they worked together as a team to determine the most efficient way to count an entire tub of blocks. We are very proud of their progress and creativity in the classroom. Students discovered that counting in 10’s or 20’s was the most efficient way. There were 1311 blocks in Mrs Cheah’s tub!

BrainSTEM Competition

A selection of Year 7 and 8 students participated in the BrainSTEM competition at Melbourne Grammar School on Thursday 8th June. The event provided an incredible opportunity for our students to engage with the world of sustainability, creative and critical thinking skills. They had the privilege of hearing from industry experts, including Liz Perrone, Head of Energy Hubs Commercial Development at AGL. Liz’s inspiring work involves transitioning fossil fuel power station sites into Low Carbon Energy Hubs, aiming to support sustainability and decarbonization while fostering employment and economic prosperity for local communities. Our students were then grouped with students from other schools to collaboratively tackle a sustainability goal. They had to identify potential problems, brainstorm solutions, create their solution using LEGO and pitch their ideas to a panel of judges. We are proud to announce that Lawton’s team emerged as the winners, each receiving a well-deserved Lego set and Lana’s team won the people’s choice award. Congratulations to all our participating students for their hard work and dedication!

Mini Hooptime

On Wednesday 14th June, all the Year 2 students went to Diamond Valley Stadium for a Mini Hooptime day. Students were given the opportunity to learn lots of new basketball skills for the first half of the day which was led by some expert coaches from the Eltham wildcats. In the second part of the day, students were placed into teams and were able to participate in mini basketball matches.

It was a fantastic event where the Year 2 students were able to showcase their talent and teamwork. Madelyn, Kosi, and William deserve recognition for their standout performances and contributions. Congratulations to all the Year 2 students for their achievements and a fantastic day of development, sport and fun.

Little Athletics

In Term 2, Little Athletics Australia provided a coach to facilitate their ‘Laps’ program at Northside. The coach visited the College to conduct sessions for the Year 3-6 students in preparation for the athletics carnival! It was beneficial to have experts in the field share their knowledge and teach specific skills to enhance students’ performance.

Rob, the coach from Laps Little Athletics, provided valuable insights and strategies for shot put, running, and long jump. Learning proper techniques and receiving guidance from a coach greatly improved students’ abilities in these events. With Rob’s guidance, the students developed a solid foundation and gained confidence in their abilities. By receiving professional guidance and incorporating the strategies taught by Rob, the students were better equipped to showcase their skills, compete effectively, and enjoy the athletics carnival experience. Overall, the visit from Little Athletics and the guidance provided by Coach Rob undoubtedly contributed to the students’ preparedness and success in the athletics carnival. It’s a fantastic initiative that promotes physical activity, skill development, and a positive attitude towards sports.

Year 6 Mixed AFL team

I’m thrilled to share a report on our amazing Year 6 Mixed AFL team’s performance in the district sports season. As a member of the team, I couldn’t be prouder of what we achieved together.

We played games against different schools in our district, and guess what? We won half of them! I think it’s pretty awesome. Sure, our win-loss record may not be perfect, but the progress we made was outstanding.

At the beginning of the season, most of us had limited experience and skills in AFL. Promoted to Division A we were up against some tough competitors! But we didn’t let that discourage us. We dedicated ourselves to training and worked hard to improve our individual and team skills. Our coaches guided us through drills and exercises to enhance our kicking, handballing, marking, and game tactics. It wasn’t easy, but we persevered. Thanks to Mr McInnes and Mr Longley our coaches!

As the season progressed, we could see the results of our efforts. Our kicks became more accurate, our handballs more precise, and our teamwork more cohesive. We developed a better understanding of the game and improved our decision-making on the field.

While winning games was undoubtedly exciting, the most important aspect was the progress we made in our skills and the friendships we built along the way. We supported and encouraged each other, celebrating our achievements and learning from our mistakes.

It was very exciting to have an ex-afl player come to watch and encourage us in our last game of the season. This was especially exciting for our Collingwood fans!

In conclusion, our Year 6 Mixed AFL team had a fantastic season. Winning half of our games and witnessing our skill improvement was an incredible experience. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be a part of such a dedicated and determined team. Let’s carry this spirit into future seasons and continue to strive for success!

CSEN Senior Rally Day - Boy’s AFL

On the 29th May, we had our Senior School Boy’s Rally Day for AFL 9’s. The overall event was a great day out, unfortunately it was a tough day on the scoreboard for our boys. A special mention goes to Noah and Nick for their goal-scoring abilities as well as Josh L and Josh S for their commitment to get possession of the ball in the midfield. Yousef was also the standout in the backline contesting marks in the air. Congratulations to all participants for their sportsmanship, teamwork, and enthusiasm during the Senior School Rally Day for AFL 9’s.

Congratulations to the girls on their impressive performance at the CSEN Senior Rally Day! Finishing 4th overall out of 17 teams was a fantastic accomplishment, and it’s clear that they showcased some exceptional basketball skills throughout the tournament.

Winning most of the games in their pool demonstrates the team’s strength and ability to compete at a high level. It’s a testament to their hard work, dedication, and effective teamwork. They displayed great coordination, strategy, and execution on the court to achieve such success.

It’s also worth acknowledging the outstanding contributions of Keira and Sarah, who were recognised as the most valuable players. Their skills and performances played a significant role in the team’s overall success. Their talent, leadership, and ability to make an impact during crucial moments of the games are commendable.

CSEN Senior Rally Day - Girl’s Basketball CSEN Soccer Championship

In a thrilling display of skill and determination, the CSEN Soccer Championship showcased the talent of our young athletes on the field. The boys team demonstrated their prowess by clinching victories in two challenging games. Meanwhile, the girls team remained undefeated throughout the tournament, ultimately securing a remarkable 2-0 win in the Grand Final.

The boys’ team showcased their teamwork and dedication, securing impressive wins in two of their matches. Their outstanding performance can be attributed to the collective effort of every player on the field, but one player stood out among the rest. Timothy captained the side well and exhibited exemplary skills. He executed his team role flawlessly and communicated effectively with his teammates. His commitment and talent were instrumental in their victories. On the other hand, the girls’ team proved to be a formidable force, sweeping aside all opponents en route to the Grand Final. Neva and Lauren emerged as key players who dominated the midfield. Their stellar performances not only inspired the teammates but also motivated them to perform at their best. Christelle’s encouragement played a vital role in their triumphant journey. Kyra was a strong defender, rarely allowing the attackers to push past her. Charlize was unstoppable as goalkeeper. The whole team stepped up and really worked together in the rain and wet to achieve success.

The success of both teams would not have been possible without the support and guidance from their coaches (and coach driver!). Mrs. Venegas, Mr. Longley, and Mr. McInnes provided the teams with valuable coaching, refining their skills and fostering a winning mentality. Their dedication and expertise significantly contributed to the exceptional performances seen on the field. The CSEN Soccer Championship will be remembered as a successful event that showcased the remarkable skills, dedication, and teamwork of our Year 6 cohort. Congratulations to all the participants, and a special thanks to CSEN for providing great sporting opportunities.

Music

Mini Recitals

On Thursday 8th June Northside hosted its first of many Mini Recitals in our dedicated music space. The evening performance saw students perform a wide range of piano repertoire that they had prepared, with the intimate audience really enjoying seeing their children perform. Some of our piano students are currently taking exams, this was a perfect way for them to practice performing their programs in front of an audience. We thank Ms Jacinta Wang for all her hard work with our piano students this semester. Please keep an eye out for more upcoming recitals in Term 3 for other instruments and our big ensembles night in October at Encompass Church. At Northside we seek to give every child an opportunity to take part in music and we are so excited to be hosting regular events again after the previous few years of challenges in the events space. Onwards and upwards!

ArtYear 6 Art

Congratulations, Year 6 students, on your accomplishments this semester! Throughout the term, you delved into the rich diversity of cultures through the exploration of Western, Eastern, and various countries’ art forms. Your engagement with drawing and painting allowed you to develop your artistic skills and broaden your understanding of different art forms. Well done, Year 6’s, on your fantastic efforts!

Information Technology

Phishing Text Messages

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in phishing messages. Phishing is a form of fraud in which an attacker masquerades as a reputable person or an organisation to steal user data such as login details or credit card numbers.

Below is an example of an SMS attacker claiming to be from LinkT (eg. Citylink), where you are presented with a link to log in to pay an outstanding toll account. To the right of the SMS screenshot, is an image of the website from that text message, where you can enter any details, and it will allow you to progress to the next screen as this is not a legitimate website where it will verify your details with the real database.

Tips

• Always check the website to verify it is legitimate by contacting the company directly. Do not use the numbers or email provided in the messages!

• Google search the text message or the number as it is likely that others have also encountered the message and have reported it.

• If you have supplied your personal information, contact your bank or the business in question to suspend all access immediately

• Never use the same password for multiple websites or platforms.

Wellbeing

On Tuesday 30th May, Northside Christian College hosted Collective Shout who conducted a professional development session for staff and later presented to our parents and carers. The presentation addressed how we can support our young people growing up in a sexualised world. The information shared was confronting but helped to inform our College community of the challenges our young people are facing as a result of social media, online access and marketing.

If you would like to view a recording of the session, please let me know at ncc@ncc.vic.edu.au.

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9

Earlier this year my husband and I started a podcast series where we discuss ‘Family’. In a recent episode our daughter asked if she could record something with us. It was her desire to discuss ‘connection in family’ in an effort to help other families keep connected. One of the things our daughter discussed during the episode was the concept of ‘cleaning up our mess’ after a conflict. You see, at the tender age of 6, she has learned that conflict can make a mess of things, but it can also be an opportunity for us to grow.

One of the restorative ‘tools’ that so many of our students have learned this year through the PeaceWise program, is the ‘5 A’s of Apology’. The idea of this tool comes from Proverbs 28:13, “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.”

1. Admit your part without saying if, but or maybe

2. Apologise specifically for your poor choices

3. Accept the consequences

4. Ask for forgiveness

5. Alter your behaviour and attitude

As our daughter said, cleaning up our messes can be hard but we can remember that God is with us. His word not only encourages us to be peacemakers but it also helps us walk in strength as we pursue this. Isaiah 41:10 says, “Do not fear: I am with you; do not be anxious: I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”

Our young people have grown in their relationships with one another this year as they have learned how to ‘clean up their mess’, to make peace in relationships at home, at school – everywhere they go! They have learned that God wants peace for us, and has given us a way to find it. They have begun to build strong and healthy relationships with the people around them.

It was a joy for us to hear our daughter speak during the podcast episode, on some of the lessons she’s learned with us at home while also tying in some of the lessons that she has been learning at school. We are thankful for a school that pursues Godly principles of peacemaking.

Join us to hear about the Northside curriculum, what’s on offer in Secondary School, and how Northside can continue to provide a place where students understand the world they live in and their purpose in it (Psalm 19).

It’s more important than ever for children to gain an excellent education, while being nurtured emotionally, physically and spiritually in a caring Christ-focused environment.

Train up a child in the way they should go, and when they are old they will not depart from it.”
