The end of Term 3 at Northside Christian College has quickly come about. It has been wonderful observing our students participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities, which have enriched the learning experience for our students. The past few weeks have seen our students participate in Science and Book Week activities, year level camps, academic competitions, excursions, Write a Book in a Day, sport clinics, CSEN Athletics, student prayer group meetings, interschool sport, INSPiRE activities, and a music recital. May I congratulate our students on their efforts in challenging themselves throughout the past term. Thank you to the many staff who have supported these events for our students. I am so grateful for our passionate team of staff at Northside.
Our students in Years 10 and 11 have recently indicated their subject preferences for next year. The College is now using this information to assist in the early stages of developing the 2024 timetable. It is exciting to be able to offer our students the option of completing the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) and the VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM). We value the opportunity to support students in preparing for a diverse range of pathways.
The College recently celebrated Teacher Aide Appreciation Week, which provided us with an opportunity to acknowledge the many staff who support our students to flourish. We recognise it takes a dedicated team of staff to develop and maintain a nurturing environment to help our students achieve their best. We are blessed to have an amazing team of staff.
The Year 12 students at Northside are completing their last schoolbased assessments as part of their VCE studies. We are grateful that each student is being supported with their pathway planning and preparations for end of year examinations. Our College community will be praying for this cohort of students as they prepare for their final term at Northside.
As a College community, may we continue to find strength, comfort, love and rest in the Lord. Let us continue to be encouraged by our College’s theme verse for 2023, which comes from Psalm 34:8 (NIV).
“Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in Him.”
Working together,
Michael Bond Principal“

It was with great excitement that Northside Christian College celebrated the opening of the Middle School building on Friday 1st September 2023. The building was officially opened by the Hon. Colin Brooks MP, State Member for Bundoora, who represented the Victorian Government.
Northside Christian College is grateful for the support of the Victorian Government and the capital grant of $2 million administered through the Victorian Independent Schools Block Grant Authority to support approximately $4 million of construction works at Northside Christian College.
Our new building consists of eight classrooms, break-out rooms, recording studios, staff offices, and foyer areas to support a diverse range of learning activities. Construction also included landscaping works, outdoor seating, and a new playground.
The Middle School classrooms consist of flexible furniture arrangements to support a diverse range of learning activities. This learning environment aims to be flexible and will support collaborative learning, problem solving, teamwork, critical thinking, and the development of communication skills.
College Principal, Mr Michael Bond, thanked several people for their significant contributions to the construction project, including Mr Ian Field (Architect, Life Design Architecture), Mr Tian Leow (Project Manager, PreBuilt), Pastor Raff Marcucci (Committee of Management chairperson), Mr Damian Higgins (former College Principal), Mr Leigh Adcock (College Business Manager), and Mr Stephen Nelson (College Property Manager).
The College also acknowledged the prayers and support of Encompass Church and Northside Ministry Resources and extended thanks to the former Senior Pastors, Pastor John and Pastor Lois Spinella for their support throughout this project. During the opening ceremony, Mr Bond also thanked the new Senior Pastors of Encompass Church, Pastor Jason and Pastor Alissa Newcastle, for their prayers and encouragement. The Northside Christian College community is most grateful for our relationship with Encompass Church and the opportunity to partner together to provide Christian education for students and families in the Northern suburbs of Melbourne.
The Middle School Captains at Northside Christian College played a significant role in the opening of the new building, including cutting the ribbon with Hon. Colin Brooks MP, to officially open the new building.
Pastor Raff Marcucci also shared a prayer of dedication during the ceremony. We give thanks to God for always providing for our needs. We continue to pray that His will is done as our school continues to grow.
Mr Michael Bond PrincipalA highlight of Term 3 was our Year 1 breakfast. Students arrived early in their pyjamas and excitedly found their places at a table in the Year 1 classroom. There was a choice of several different types of cereal as well as toast and juice. Students were encouraged to butter their own toast and spread the jam themselves. There was an atmosphere of excitement as they chatted with friends over their breakfast. When they were finished, they cleaned their teeth at the water fountain outside. This is the first step towards preparing students for camp in Year 3.
Mrs Joy Lisle Primary TeacherOne of the best parts about being in Year 1 here at Northside Christian College is being able to go to Traffic School! As a teacher, this is one of my favourite excursions each year, and the students love it just as much! We got to learn all about road rules, and how to ride a bike safely. The students then spent an hour riding around on fake roads with working traffic lights, stop signs and even a petrol station! It’s amazing to see some students who have never ridden a bike before, be confident enough to take their feet off the floor and use the pedals to get themselves around by the end of the session!
Since our excursion, I’ve heard from families who have been told when they have disobeyed the road rules, and even I was caught not looking when crossing the car park and was promptly reminded by my students about the lessons they learnt at Traffic School! This excursion gives students an opportunity to learn about the world around them in such a practical and engaging way!
Mrs Matilda Holden Primary TeacherIn Term 3, the Year 2’s had their annual sleepover at school. Excitedly, students arrived at school, following an early dinner at home. After playing some games and creating with Lego, we chose our favourite ice cream to eat! With bellies full, we watched the movie, Flora and Ulysses - we had been reading the book all term. Then it was time for teeth, toilet and pyjamas. Ms Natoli read us all a bedtime story, which we loved! Finally, it was time for lights out. Some of us found it a bit tricky to fall asleep in a different place, but we all got to sleep in the end. In the morning, we packed up, got dressed and had some breakfast, prepared by our lovely parent helpers. Some of us were a little tired the next day, but we all agreed that we had fun, and it was a great experience having a big sleepover with all of our friends.

Observation: I see a little jelly bean shape that is hanging in a cage. It is a pale green colour and is hanging in the cage by an earring hook. It is small and is the shape of an oval. There are also three small gold dots on the side of the chrysalis for oxygen.
Date: 28/8/2023
Observation: Today one has hatched overnight. It is a girl because it does not have dots on its wings. Today a chrysalis has also become fully translucent. You can now see the butterfly and its body really clearly. You can also see the beautiful brown and orange colour on the butterfly’s wings.
Date: 31/08/2023
Final Observation: Today is the final observation I am going to type. Today we got flowers for the new butterfly enclosure and they are now sitting in the new bigger and better enclosure. We also got the year 4 butterfly and they are now settling in on their new home. There are 9 females and 1 male. We are also hoping to get a few Caterpillars so that we can get more butterflies and start the whole life cycle again.
Have you ever seen a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis?
You can watch the video filmed by 3T here!
On Wednesday 16th August we all had an amazing experience. We went to the Zoo called Werribee Zoo. It had lots of interesting and unusual animals that some of us had never seen before! When we first walked in we saw statues of animals and met a Zookeeper named Rachel. She introduced us to the Zoo a little bit then led us to an area that had a tour bus. When we were all ready, the bus started moving and took us on a tour around the Werribee Zoo’s animal enclosure. The bus drove through the water! When the ride stopped we all found an area and ate our lunch.
Students in Year 6 participated in the Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee, an online spelling competition for students from all around Australia. Results were ranked according to accuracy, how many spelling words were correctly submitted out of 30 and the time it took for the entrant to spell and submit each word. The student’s cumulative time to complete all 30 words was recorded down to the millisecond.
The top 100 ranked entrants from the School Competition Round in each state and territory will be invited to participate in the State and Territory Finals Competition Round. Three of our Year 6 students successfully made it through the district round and went on to compete in the State round. These students were Aylaa, Gideon and Lucas from Year 6 T. We are very proud of each of their efforts.
Ms Christie Vaughn Primary TeacherThe Year 9 Science students have been looking at the first 20 elements and working out electron configurations for individual elements. We set a challenge to work as a team to fill electron shells. Students had fun engaging in a practical activity to learn about atoms.
On Tuesday 15th August, our Year 10 students made their way to the city of Bendigo in regional Victoria. Here they were treated to the current exhibition being held at the Bendigo Art Gallery titled The Australian Women’s Weekly: 90 Years of an Australian Icon. As the students are currently looking at the post-war evolution of Australian culture, this content opened the eyes of students to what life was like for people in Australia only 50, 60, and 70 years ago. From knitting patterns to war correspondence, to celebrity gossip and birthday cakes, the students were able to get a glimpse into the priorities of the past. Students were also given a guided tour of the Art Gallery’s permanent collection; an array of First Nations artworks and work from other prominent Australian and international artists. After a brief exploration of the city for lunch, students ventured to the top of Bendigo’s highest lookout for sweeping views of the historical gold rush town and all of its fantastic architecture. I hope that the students were inspired by our expedition, and perhaps will visit other regional cities with their families to learn more about the development of our great country.
So much effort was put in to each and every outfit we saw on the Book Week Parade Day.
Well done to all the student’s and families on their creations!
What an amazing week Science Week was!
Check out all the fun the students had!
We are thrilled to share the exciting experiences of our ten Year 8 - 9 students who recently participated in the BrainSTEM Challenge Day. Despite the early start, we extend our heartfelt thanks to both our dedicated students and supportive parents who turned up early. The day was enriched with knowledge as our students had the privilege of listening to distinguished guest speakers. Rob Gell from the Royal Society of Victoria, Jacyl Shaw from the Menzies Foundation, Ian Wong from Circular Economy Victoria, and
Cameron Kaufman from Coreo, captivated our students with their insights into the world of Circular Economy. Our students also had the invaluable opportunity to engage in a thoughtful Q&A session with these experts, which was the highlight of the day. Following this enlightening session, our students were placed into diverse groups, collaborating with students from other schools. Their challenge was to identify pressing problems hindering the achievement of sustainability goals and, in turn, devise innovative solutions to address these issues. Our students then presented their creative solutions to a panel of judges, showcasing their remarkable problem-solving skills. We are incredibly proud of their participation and enthusiasm in this event, which has undoubtedly expanded their horizons and empowered them as future leaders in sustainability. Congratulations to Zoe and Manas who made it to the final 6.
We are excited to share some fantastic news from our recent mooting events at the school. This is the first year that our school has participated in a moot.
A moot is a simulated legal argument or debate where students take on the roles of lawyers and present arguments on a particular legal issue. It’s a fantastic way for our students to develop their critical thinking skills, learn the specialized language of the law, and gain experience in writing legal scripts, interacting with judges, and public speaking.
Our Year 10 - 11 team of students participated in a competitive mooting event held at Scotch College on the 4th September. The day was filled with mooting rounds and a workshop. Just a week later, on the 11th of September, two Year 9 teams participated in a non-competitive mooting day. This event aimed to give our younger students a taste of mooting without the pressure of competition. It served as an excellent learning experience, allowing our Year 9 students to further develop their mooting skills in a supportive and encouraging environment. Congratulations to Laurence for receiving an Advocacy Award.
Students worked with a mooting coach, preparing rigorously leading up to the event. Our students showcased university-level skills in critical thinking, as well as legal etiquette and language. They not only wrote compelling scripts but also engaged with judges and displayed impressive public speaking skills. The feedback from both teachers and judges was resoundingly positive, emphasising that our school’s mooting teams are of a very high standard.
These events have not only provided them with valuable skills but also instilled confidence and hopefully ignited an interest in law and debate. We look forward to continuing our success in future mooting competitions and events.
On Monday 4th September, the Year 5’s and 6’s went to Lilydale Basketball Stadium in Kilsyth to play basketball against other schools. Northside had three rookie teams, and each team had to play nine games. It was a super fun day. Win, draw or lose, we all enjoyed playing each match. It was really good to see a lot of my friends, who might not play basketball a lot, trying their best. Overall, I had a great time and I think everyone else did too.
On Friday 8th August the senior girls netball team competed at a rally day. Even though we only had seven players, it was a really great day. We came together as a team and all grew and learned something new. Several of our players were younger, but that didn’t stop them from playing well and rising to the challenge. Over the course of the day, we warmed up and ended up winning 3 games, losing 3, and drawing our final after a comeback from four goals down. We all worked together as a team to achieve this and I am so proud of how we played and improved over the course of the day.
Sarah, Year 11On 22nd August, Aylaa represented Northside in the Bundoora Districts Athletics meet at Meadowglen Athletics Track. She participated in Long Jump and Triple jump and achieved jumps of 3.90m and 8.77m.
These distances got her through to the Whittlesea Divisional Athletics competition on the 5th September. Aylaa jumped 3.87m in Long Jump and 8.61m in Triple Jump.
Aylaa’s jumps were the best in the competition meaning that Aylaa has now progressed to the SSV regionals which will be in Term 4. We are looking forward to seeing Aylaa’s further achievements in Athletics in Term 4 and beyond.
Mrs Anna Venegas Sports TeacherOn 17th August, 5 teams from Northside competed in the CSEN Western Basketball Rally Day in Werribee. It was a great event with good sportsmanship; big thanks to Mr Zammit, Miss Wallison, Jared, Mr Minty, and Miss Skerry for coaching and supporting all of us that competed.
Congratulations to the intermediate boys and the mixed senior team for winning in their divisions, and to the junior boys and girls for getting runnersup. Everyone who played should be proud of themselves as every contribution on the court makes a huge difference overall.
In particular, I want to acknowledge everyone that played in the senior mixed team. We almost didn’t compete due to many players becoming ill. God came through and blessed our efforts on the court that day. For our last CSEN event as Year 12’s, it was definitely an event to remember.

Music has been a conduit of healing, joy, community and care throughout the centuries. Many times, the Biblical testaments express how the ministry of song has brought goodness to many people and ultimately honours God. With this in mind, the Primary Choir and Secondary Vocal Group plan to join forces with a number of my individual singing students to spread this “musical joy” to the Ian Brand Residential Care (Bundoora Extended Care) on 6th October. Their music program reflects how we can be a vessel of healing to people needing the love of God in the community. With a mix of Gospel and Inspirational songs, the students will learn to share their musical gifts, grow in their confidence and bless the elderly with a message of hope… and have loads of fun! If you would like your child to join in the next performances as choristers or soloists, I encourage you to enrol them.
Mrs Michelle Hodgson Vocal TutorThis term, members of our Wellbeing team delivered the inaugural SHINEGIRL workshops to our Year 8 girls.
SHINEGIRL is about equipping our girls with the knowledge and skills to discover who they are and the person they are created to be. This program challenged the girls to find the strength and courage within themselves to accept and love who they are, to make healthy choices and live to their full potential.
It used various fun and challenging activities and related discussion to explore issues including identity, self-worth, respect for others, the power of choice, relationships, resilience, strength, worth and purpose. The sessions were interactive small groups and allowed the girls to explore these areas with their peers, in a challenging, but informal environment. The girls enjoyed a relaxed environment with candles, snacks and the opportunity to pamper themselves. All of the participants were given a small keepsake describing the qualities their peers see in them, as an ongoing reminder of how special and unique they are.
Some testimonials included:
‘I enjoyed learning to accomplish your dreams and don’t let anyone stop you.’
‘I loved the food and the perfume.’
‘I loved that I could be myself and talk freely.’
‘I learned that we are all unique and that’s ok.’
‘I learned that I have worth and Shine gave me a safe space to talk.’
‘I enjoyed finding out about my Heartsong.. I loved the girl stuff: the hand exfoliating and sharing with each other.’ ‘We could talk comfortably together without judgment. We have passions, we are special and unique.’
‘I think we should keep doing this program because it is helpful and fun.’

“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.” Matthew 5:9
“Do your best to live at peace with everyone!” Romans 12:18
At Northside, when students have been involved in a conflict, one of the ways staff work to facilitate the restoration process is by using the PeaceWise reflection. As students reflect, they recognise ‘four pieces of the pie’ that they can reflect on to assist them in resolving conflict.
We are blessed to belong to a community in which students and staff pause to pray, inviting Holy Spirit to bring peace, wisdom and help before unpacking and resolving conflicts.
After this, students then work through the following four steps;
1) God - Put God first
Dear God, Thank you that because of Jesus we can have peace with you and others. Please help me to be a peacemaker and follow your way when dealing with this situation. Amen.
2) Me - Own my part
What happened in the conflict? How did I respond? How can I apologise using the 5 A’s of apology?
3) You - Talk it over
Is there something the other person did that I need to kindly speak to them about? Encourage them to own their part of what went wrong.
Primary students can use the PAWS process of negotiation
Prepare: pause, pray, prepare
Ask: what they want and why
Work it through Solve it together
Secondary students can use the PAUSE process of negotiation
Prepare: pray and get advice
Affirm relationship: value the person and use kind words
Understand interests: find out and care about what the other wants
Search for creative solutions: brainstorm ideas
Evaluate options: choose a solution that suits both Phillipians 2:3-4
4) Us - Make it right
How can I restore my relationship with the other person? What does forgiveness look like? What can I do to help our relationship be better moving forward?
During the holidays, should a conflict arise, encourage your child to practise these steps as we continue to aim to walk as peacemakers as a community.
