In a recent survey of seniors, the highest ranking elderly chronic condition at 48% is arthritis. The second at 45% is high blood pressure, while other conditions such as diabetes are found in a much lower rank at 25% and less.
Arthritis is the swelling and tenderness of one or more joints, with the most common types of arthritis being osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. The main symptoms are joint pain and stiffness, which typically worsen with age.
Osteoarthritis causes cartilage, the hard, slippery tissue that covers the ends of bones where they form a joint, to break down and is the most common a iction. Rheumatoid arthritis is a disease in which the immune system attacks the joints, beginning with the lining of joints.
Doctors now have a host of effective arthritis treatments: medications, pain management, such as cortisone shots, surgical options, integrative medicine, new support systems and more psychological help for people struggling with joint pain. People diagnosed with arthritis today have hope – and a great likelihood – that their disease can be treated and put into remission.
One of the highly recommended and best sources of information such as described above about understanding and treating arthritis is The Mayo Clinic Guide by Lynne S. Peterson (2020): “Understanding much more about arthritis will not provide a cure but it will help all of us manage our arthritis much more effectively.”

With its pages full of what's new and what's happening around Town and, most importantly, the smiling faces of town residents, Neighbour feels like a community memory book.
In highlighting the many ways that we come together, celebrate milestones, and show how we support each other, this publication has quickly woven itself into the fabric of the community and has lived up to its title, becoming a neighbour to us all.
Traditional media often focuses on provincial, national or world news. This has created opportunities for hyperlocal storytelling, the likes of which we see in the pages of Neighbour. It's great to have this publication in the media mix in Newmarket.
Congratulations to the Neighbour team on your first anniversary. I wish you continued success in the years to come.
The Aubrey and Marla Dan Foundation (AMDF) is a family foundation that was founded in 2002. It operates on the belief that individuals and communities should be healthy, confident, inspired, successful and have access to educational, mental health and housing supports. Their approach is about goal setting and building partnerships, which means they work with organizations they support in order to share knowledge, resources and expertise.
Since its founding, AMDF has remained committed to engaging with organizations dedicated to bringing about positive change to ensure the success of children, youth, and adults.
It's that passion to support positive change in people’s lives that connected AMDF with Abuse Hurts. AMDF has supported Abuse Hurts with a generous, annual $25K grant for the last 18 years toward Abuse Hurts’ Delivering Hope program. Their faithful funding has enabled Abuse Hurts to consistently provide much needed resources for the men, women and children that apply for assistance through the program.
Although AMDF is named Abuse Hurts’ Champion of the Month this April, they have truly championed Abuse Hurts’ cause on an ongoing basis. Not long before the pandemic outbreak, Abuse Hurts named The Aubrey and Marla Dan Foundation as their Huggum’s Hero – the charity’s highest honour. Due to the outbreak, the award – a beautifully mounted, bronze statue of Huggum Bear (the charity’s mascot) – resided at the AMDF main o ces. The award remained there for a number of years, which seemed appropriate given their unwavering support through a very tough time. Their support and friendship make them Abuse Hurts Champions for life.

I stopped in to say hello and wish my neighbours a Happy Spring! There’s something extra fresh brewing in the air this year, which fills me with eager expectations for a special season in our quaint yet growing communities of Newmarket & Aurora.
Even though I’ve lived in Newmarket for almost 20 years, I fall more and more in love with the region and appreciate the fascinating people that make our community an eclectic and dynamically evolving wonder. Our big little towns have captured the heart of this city girl forever!
Born and raised in Toronto, most of my life and career were fashioned in the financial district in Private Wealth Management and Finance. My heart to serve and give-back always found passion in volunteering and connecting with people in other practical ways. It was over 20 years ago when just visiting family in Newmarket, that I connected with a community church and began volunteering with children & youth; it wasn’t long before Newmarket became my home.
Two of my most passionate pursuits here in the community are serving as Chair for Abuse Hurts, helping women, children and men escape abuse; and my career in helping families with Home Financing as a Mortgage Agent with The Mortgage Group.
Being able to help so many families in the first few months of 2023 even landed me special recognition in the TMG Million Dollar+ Mortgage Club.

My name is Rohan Goel and I am a proud resident of the Town of Aurora. I was fortunate to be elected as a Legislative Page to serve at Queens Park. I had an incredible experience working along with my fellow Pages and seeing first hand how the government works and how a bill becomes a law. During my term I had the opportunity to work closely with the Minister of my riding, Michael Parsa. He is an incredible individual, mentor and role model for me. As I worked closely with the Minister I learnt how he’s working hard to make housing affordable for all Ontario residents.
As Page, I listened to many discussions in the chamber of the current issues. It was very fascinating for me to see first hand how all political parties function and regarding the roles of many important positions in the chamber - speaker of the house, house leaders, clerks, Hansard and the sergeant at arms. Members of the parliament were all very welcoming, friendly and knowledgeable, which made the whole experience as a Page fun and memorable for me. I will cherish these lifelong memories!
This was a life changing experience and I would like to thank my parents (Veenu & Vinay Goel), my teacher & principal at Hartman P.S (Mr. Jackson & Mrs. Richmond), my Page coordinator ( Mr. G/ Franco Gutierrez ) and to the Minister of my riding ( Michael Parsa ) for all your support and trust in me in this incredible journey.

As your local premier accessibility consultants, we want to take this time to highlight the importance of home accessibility. As we age, we are wanting to stay in our homes longer and technology is allowing us to do so! It is also proven to be significantly more economical to modify our homes and stay in them versus selling our homes and looking at alternate solutions. Adding a stair lift to your straight or curved staircase can reduce falls and increase accessibility to the upper levels of your home. Updating your bathroom with a tub cut out is an easy and affordable option to modifying your bathroom and making stepping in and out of your tub a breeze.

Our team has had such an amazing first year in business! We have had the opportunity to meet and connect with so many of our neighbours and we are so grateful to each and every one of you.
Here is a recap of some of the things we got to do this past year…
Building our community together is my top priority. It has been a pleasure to attend numerous community events over the past few weeks to celebrate, congratulate, and recognize members and tour businesses in our community.
It was an honour to attend FIRST Robotics Canada competition held at Ray Twinney Complex on March 5th alongside my colleague Minister Lecce. It was incredible to see how innovative and passionate our youth are about STEM.
One of my goals as the MPP for Newmarket-Aurora is to visit, tour and get to know all the businesses in my riding. Mach was filled with numerous visits and tours of manufacturers right here in Newmarket-Aurora. On March 10th, I had the privilege of visiting CuBE Packaging in Aurora – it was great to be able to see and learn about how reusable containers are manufactured right here in my riding. I also toured Buchner Manufacturing Inc. in Newmarket where I learned the ins and outs of their operation.
On March 16th, I had the pleasure of touring Dentec Safety Specialists Inc. in Newmarket. They are a family-owned and operated manufacturing business that provides high quality safety solutions right here in my riding. It was wonderful to also learn about their background and tour the facility of TS Tech Canada, another manufacturing company in Newmarket.

I hosted Senior’s roundtables in both Newmarket and Aurora. It was great to listen to what our seniors have to say about staying active and connected in our community. On March 20th I had the honour of attending the Town of Newmarket’s Persian New Year Flag Raising Ceremony alongside my colleague MPP Goldie Ghamari. Wishing you and your family a Happy Ramadan, Passover, and Easter.
A big thank you to everyone that donated, participated and sponsored the Coldest Night of the Year 2023! Newmarket, you are amazing -raising close to $160,000 for INN From The Cold. 400 Walkers, 64 Teams and 65 Volunteers! While many claim to be environmentally conscious, there are few who are genuinely making a significant impact in sustainable building by creating meaningful solutions. Howland Green Homes is one such company, which aims to exceed net-zero standards and enter net positive territory. Their latest venture, the Wellington East Business Centre in Aurora (located at Wellington St. E and 404), is the largest o ce building in Canada that goes beyond net-zero standards.
“We can reduce our consumption greatly and it’s relatively easy to accomplish,” says Dave de Sylva, president of Howland Green Homes. “We need to use much less energy, in general, and start using today’s energy, such as solar and geothermal, rather than carbon-based options.”
Coming in at roughly 80,000 square feet, the Wellington East Business Centre will capture more renewable energy than it requires for the operation of the entire structure annually, reducing its operational energies by about 85% . Powered by sun and geothermal energy, it will serve as the perfect combination of ecology, economy and technological advancement. Owning a space at this building is saving more than just the planet. Thanks to all its focus on conservation, it’s saving businessowners money month over month, year over year.
Howland Green is a builder and developer of residential and commercial properties with a commitment to building with greater sustainability than any other builder in Canada. They have recently launched a new commercial o ce condominium in Aurora, with units now for sale.

How long have you lived in the community?
I have lived in Newmarket on and off since my Teenage years. I went off to the city for about 10 years but landed back in Newmarket in my late twenties and have been settling here for the past 5-6 years. I would absolutely consider Newmarket my home.
What is your favourite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why?
Summer is my favourite season, we have a pool and love hosting friends and family for bbqs, pool days & drinks.
What is your favourite beverage?
My favourite beverage is a ginormous mason jar filled with ice and topped with water. A close second is a nice glass of red wine.
What is your favourite holiday to celebrate?
My favourite holiday to celebrate is Christmas. There’s just something about Christmas. If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be Newmarket, but I’d have a second home in the Bahamas.
What is your favourite beverage?
You would think the natural answer would be beer, however I start everyday with a Cream of Earl Black Tea... Some say two pots in the morning is a little much, but it’s my favourite!
What is your go-to local restaurant?
With being a young family with three boys, 5 and under we haven’t been able to get a true sitdown restaurant experience in a long while. This being said our take out go two seem to be Orchid Thai (Aurora) and Second Bowl (Newmarket).
If you could give advice to your younger self, what would it be?
Everything does happen for a reason, it might not make sense at the time, however at some point it will make sense.
How do you giveback or pay-it-forward within the community?
The way we have developed and continue to grow the community space and vibes at Market Brewing has been our goal since opening our doors. With everything that we do there we are always trying to giveback and pay things forward for our community.
What is your favourite song, artist/group or genre of music
Anything with more of an aggressive edge to it. All genres are able to show off a little aggression now and then so it’s always fun to discover this.

Spring is in the air!
April is here and that means spring is in the air! As the sun shines and the weather gets warmer it is important for us to reflect on the changing seasons and what that means for us as individuals.
The spring season brings us an abundance of diverse celebrations such as Nowruz, Easter, Passover & Eid Al-Fitr all celebrated by many constituents within my riding of Aurora- Oak Ridges- Richmond Hill. Each of these celebrations are amongst the most important for those who celebrate them. While Nowruz is the first day of spring and the commencement of the Persian calendar's new year, Eid al-Fitr signifies the conclusion of Ramadan, an entire month of fasting observed by Muslims around the world.
Spring is a time for birth and growth. Soon our trees and flowers will once again bloom after the winter season, our days will lengthen, and the warmer air will allow us to spend more time outside and in nature.
No matter what and how you celebrate the arrival of spring and the upcoming holidays, it is my honour and privilege to be celebrating alongside you! I invite you to my upcoming Coffee & Chat on Saturday April 22nd from 10:30am to noon- ideally outdoors. These Coffee & Chats are a wonderful way to share your views of our community that are impactful to you. For more information about the location of our upcoming April Coffee & Chat and future upcoming events, head over to my website at www.leahtaylorroymp.ca
I am honored to represent you in the House of Commons. I, along with my team, are here for you! Feel free to contact my o ce with any questions, concerns, or comments.

Neighbour Media was honoured to celebrate Purim on March 7th with Chabad Newmarket at the Newmarket Community Centre. Purim is a Jewish holiday which commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from annihilation at the hands of an anti-Jewish o cial of the Achaemenid Empire named Haman, as it is recounted in the Book of Esther. A tradition for Purim is for individuals to dress up in costume. There are a few reasons why people dress up for Purim; 1 example being, that it is to replicate the idea of Esther hiding her Jewish identity from the King.

Shine Through the Rain Foundation aims to help individuals and families affected by life-threatening illness, working hard to improve and enrich the lives of those who approach us in their time of need. We support adults, children and families from all walks of life, providing advice, guidance and financial support as they try to navigate emotional, physical and financial challenges that arise from a health crisis. Our organization offers care, comfort and compassion as we endeavor to shine a light on the devastating impact of life-threatening illness.
Programs:
Rainy Day Fund - People suffering from illness often face financial di culties. The Rainy Day Fund provides emergency payments for overdue rent and utilities, ensuring that each patient has a warm, safe place to call home while recovering. The Rainy Day Fund also provides grocery gift cards and reimburses hospital transportation and parking costs.
Camp Scholarship - Illness often isolates children from their friends and the activities they love. The Camp Scholarship Program allows children in remission to reconnect with those friends and activities. The program is offered for free and provides funding for a camp of their choice: sports, music, art, science, horseback riding, water skiing or other activities they missed most during treatment.
Camp Backpacks - As part of the Camp Scholarship Program, the Foundation provides kids with a camp backpack, filled with items they will use while enjoying their camp experience. We aim to provide something for children who may arrive at camp with little or no extras. The items inside each bag will help make a child's stay at a camp truly memorable! We also supply backpacks to an oncology camp in Ontario that is specifically designed for children with cancer to attend while still in treatment.
Pediatric Christmas Party - For families with children to enjoy the seasonal festivities, visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, enjoy children's entertainment, have fun, receive toys and gift cards to their favourite toy stores.
