Sharon Bates is not just a small business owner; she’s a vibrant young entrepreneur who has transformed Tangles Hair Salon & Spa into a beloved gem in East Gwillimbury, since 2003. With a passion for beauty and a heart for community, Sharon’s journey began at Huron Heights Secondary School, where she earned her hairdressing license through an apprenticeship program. After honing her skills in high-end salons across York Region, she took the leap at just 19 years old to fulfill her dream of owning her own salon.
Over the years, Tangles has flourished, expanding four times to accommodate a growing clientele and a talented team of eight, including specialists in laser beauty services. Sharon is dedicated to professional growth, continually upgrading her skills through industry-focused courses, including a certificate in spa management and a hair color master program. She believes in empowering her staff, encouraging them to pursue educational opportunities that have taken them to training sessions, photoshoots, and events in New York, Las Vegas, and Paris.
But Sharon’s impact goes beyond the salon. She is a passionate advocate for her community, organizing the East Gwillimbury Women’s Show, which has successfully showcased local women-owned businesses and raised over $100,000 for the Southlake Hospital Cancer Centre. Sharon truly believes that everyone can do something to give back, but that “something” is different for everyone. Her commitment to giving back doesn’t stop there; she actively supports fundraising efforts through events at the salon and is a proud member of 100 Women Who Care.
In addition to her entrepreneurial endeavors, Sharon shares her insights as a columnist for “Who Gives… East Gwillimbury?” in The Bulletin Magazine, highlighting individuals and businesses that make a difference in the community. Her dedication has earned her numerous accolades, including a Queen Jubilee Medal, a King Charles Coronation Medal, Chamber of Commerce awards, and recognition at the Canadian Hairdresser of the Year Awards. She is also a co-author of the book “The Magic of New Beginnings,” where her chapter, “Giving Along the Way,” discusses how she grew her business while giving back to the community.
As a high-energy go-getter, Sharon balances her family life with her passion for beauty and community service. With her infectious enthusiasm and unwavering commitment, she continues to inspire those around her, proving that with hard work and heart, anything is possible! #GoodNeighbour

On their shared birthday, July 3, Lynnette (Neighbour Media), Bob (Newmarket Councillor), and Mike (Owner of The George) came together to celebrate in a meaningful way at The George on Main Street. Rather than receiving gifts, they asked friends and family to contribute to a cause close to their hearts. Through their collective e orts and the generosity of their guests, they successfully raised $520 for Rose of Sharon, an organization dedicated to supporting young mothers and their children. Their birthday celebration became not just a joyful gathering, but a powerful act of giving back to the community.

A huge congratulations to Ground Burger Bar in Newmarket on their 10th Anniversary! To celebrate a decade of deliciousness, they smashed it (literally) with $2.50 smash burgers, $3 beers and $25 commemorative tees, generously donating 100% of the proceeds of these items to Rose of Sharon. Now that’s what we call a party with purpose! The celebration kept rolling into the night with live music on the patio, great vibes, and a packed house of loyal fans and community supporters. Thank you, Ground Burger Bar, for being more than just a great spot to eat. You’re a true pillar of the community and a shining example of giving back. Cheers to the next 10 years!
Abuse Hurts is honouring Liz Massarella as their Champion of the Month. A self-taught artist from Ontario with a deep love for nature and animals, her creative journey has led her to paint expressive faces, with a special focus on the eyes—because she truly believes they are the window to the soul. Capturing emotion and connection through art has always been her passion.
She painted the hummingbird for Abuse Hurts to be used as a giveaway because she was deeply inspired by all the incredible work we do for the community—especially the support and healing they offer to women in need. She sees Abuse Hurts Founder and CEO, Ellen Campbell, as a remarkable woman with an open heart and a true passion for helping others. Through her vision, countless lives have been touched. During the challenging time of COVID, painting became a meaningful outlet for Liz—it gave her purpose and a way to feel connected to something greater. Donating the hummingbird painting felt like a heartfelt way she could give back and contribute to a cause that truly matters. She is grateful to those who support artists and for wonderful people who touch the community where it hurts - like Abuse Hurts does.
If you'd like to see more of her work or learn more about Liz please visit her website at www.buyartbyliz.com. Abuse Hurts has taken that hummingbird image and used it to show gratitude to supporters. Thanks, Liz – we’re paying it forward!

Mark your calendars for Sunday, September 21st, 2025 — the final chapter of the beloved NewRoads LakeRide. After 10 incredible years of cycling, community, and commitment to mental health, we invite you to join us for one last unforgettable ride. After a decade of cycling, community spirit, and unwavering support, this will be the Final Ride, and we’re pulling out all the stops to make it the most memorable one yet.
Starting at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre, this year’s LakeRide will be more than just a scenic ride. It’s a full day of celebration, featuring live music, a delicious lunch, and the camaraderie that has defined this event since its inception.
LakeRide has always been about more than cycling. It’s about supporting the Mental Health Care Unit at Southlake Regional Health Centre — raising awareness, reducing stigma, and helping provide vital resources for those in need. Together, we've raised meaningful funds and brought people together around an issue that touches us all.
To mark our grand finale, we’re excited to offer a ra e draw for a $17,000 S-Works Aethos bicycle. Tickets are $50 each or 3 for $100 — with the winner announced at the event.
At NewRoads, we believe in giving back to the community that supports us. Your involvement — whether riding, donating, or cheering us on — has made all the difference.
Let’s make this final ride the most impactful yet. Grab your bike, invite your friends and family, and join us in celebrating a decade of purpose and community.
We can’t wait to see you at the Final LakeRide. Let’s ride with purpose — one last time.

The Government of Ontario has invested over $33 million in Newmarket–Aurora since the start of 2025 — part of our plan to protect Ontario and support local communities
MPP for Newmarket–Aurora
Building Our Community Together
A MESSAGE FROM MPP DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY
Partner:
As we enjoy the heart of summer in Newmarket—Aurora, I want to take a moment to highlight some of the meaningful investments our government has made in our community since the start of 2025. These investments reflect the priorities of Ontario’s 2025 Budget: protecting jobs, strengthening our economy, and building a resilient future for all.
To date, over $33 million in provincial funding has supported local initiatives. This includes $6.89 million for the Last Mile Housing Initiative, helping bring affordable housing projects like St. Mark’s Apartments, Inn From the Cold’s new facility, and the Gorham Street Community Housing Redevelopment to life. Our government also invested
$1.09 million to establish the York Region Crisis Hub, a 24/7 mental health and addictions care centre.
To support jobs and training, $2.1 million was awarded to Fair Chance Learning for the Career Skills Accelerator We've also provided over $17 million in Gas Tax funding to improve transit, $1.5 million for homelessness prevention, and $400,000 in autism support through Kerry’s Place. In addition, over $1.3 million has been invested by our government through the Ontario Trillium Foundation to help our non-profit organizations such as Newmarket Soccer Club, Girls Inc. and Victim Services York Region continue the great work they are doing in our community.
This summer, I’ll be out knocking on doors with my team, listening to your concerns and staying connected. My o ce remains open and ready to help.
I also encourage you to explore our beautiful community—whether it’s a stroll down historic Main Street in Newmarket or attending one of the summer concerts in the park. Let’s enjoy all that makes Newmarket—Aurora such a vibrant place to call home.
MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy announced on June 23rd that the Town of Aurora has been a successful recipient of new Seniors Active Living Centre (SALC) funding. This is one of the up to 100 new SALC programs opening across the province this year to help improve seniors’ quality of life and build community engagement. SALC programs offer seniors and older adults learning opportunities such as financial management and elder abuse prevention and a variety of recreational and social activities including fitness, healthy lifestyle and wellness classes that are important supports in communities.
Triple the fun, triple the celebration! Bob (Ward 5 Councillor), Mike (Owner of The George on Main), and Lynnette (Co-founder of Neighbour Media) all share the same birthday - July 3rd, so they did what any awesome trio would do... they threw a joint birthday bash at The George! The community was invited to join in on the fun with great food, laughter, and birthday cheer and guests even got the chance to be part of Neighbour Media’s podcast, "Conversations with Neighbours", where they shared their favourite birthday memories. And wow... The stories were just as sweet as the cake! In true #GoodNeighbour fashion, there was also a donation of over $500 made to Rose of Sharon, with funds raised throughout the day. Thanks to everyone who came out to make it a celebration to remember!

These events give residents and visitors from near and far more reason to enjoy all that our Main Street has to offer. They encourage more visits and attract new customers.
Partnering with local businesses, such as the Main St. merchants, on events like these is a big reason why Newmarket’s downtown is such a popular community gathering place, attracting over a quarter of a million visitors each year from near and far.
Mark your calendars. Summerfest on Main will be a great way to get together with family and friends and enjoy the summer. I will see you there!
A massive congratulations to the Town of Newmarket! The Southlake Foundation has awarded Newmarket the 2025 Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake "Community Spirit Award"! The theme for this year’s Rose of Sharon Graduation Celebration Night was “Oh the Places You’ll Go!”—a perfect message for the five incredible student moms who recently graduated from York Academy, our onsite high school classroom.
Young mothers (ages 14–21) from across York Region attend York Academy, which is accredited through the York Catholic District School Board. What makes our school unique is the wraparound support: free onsite childminding, transportation assistance, and a personalized curriculum tailored by our dedicated teacher.
School days begin with a group breakfast, followed by classroom learning for moms and early childhood programming for their little ones in our Child Development Centre. At lunchtime, everyone gathers for a shared meal, and our counselling team offers guidance and emotional support. Afternoons focus on academics, parenting skills, and family wellness.
Graduating high school is an extraordinary accomplishment for any teen—but for a parenting youth, it’s a milestone filled with pride, hope, and possibility. Our grads were treated to a day of pampering with professional hair and makeup by Studio B Boutique, cap-and-gown portraits by D-One Photography, and beautiful gift bags from Neighbour Media
Thanks to generous community donors, many of our graduates received scholarships and bursaries to help them pursue post-secondary education or training. We are deeply grateful to: Colleen Kelly Memorial Scholarship, Sisters of the Good Shepherd, CFUW Aurora-Newmarket, CFUW Charitable Trust, Our Lady of Grace – Catholic Women’s League, and CPG Aerospace. Special thanks to Stellar Homes, Sunny’s Flowers, and individual private donors for sponsoring the evening.

A heartfelt thank you to the Knights of Columbus Our Lady of Grace Council 6519! When Rose of Sharon found themselves in need of a new stove, the Knights stepped in at just the right time—and answered a very important prayer. The kitchen at Rose of Sharon is more than just a place to cook—it's where young mothers learn nutrition and meal prep, and where they gather with their babies, staff, and support workers to share food, connection, and care. This generous gift will continue to nourish both bodies and spirits. Thank you for making a difference, one warm meal at a time.
"Just a good boy enjoying the dog days of summerpoolside, of course!"

Hey, I'm Eddie and I'm here to serve and protect. They call me Eduardo when I'm being silly, and Edward when I'm naughty. I'm also known around town as the "fun police" but I think that's debatable. I'm protective like a Shepherd, and stubborn like a Husky. I was rescued from Northern Manitoba and my hoomans adopted me when I was just a little baby. I appreciate a good butt scratch, never turn down a snack, love car rides, and could hike a forest all day! Being a self proclaimed guard dog, I don't really have time for toys, but I always make sure my crinkle racoon Snacksy is close by and never forget to tuck him in at night.
Woof! My name is Mozzie, and I'm a super-duper 2.5-year-old Labradoodle with a tail that never stops wagging! Life is just one big adventure, and I'm always ready for fun. My favourite place might be daycare – all my best pals are there, and we play chase until we're delightfully pooped. Walks are pawsome too, with so many new smells to sniff. But honestly, nothing beats a good cuddle session on the couch, especially if it comes with some glorious belly rubs. Oh, and don't even get me started on the cheese tax... you know, that little piece of cheese I deserve when my humans are having some? Life's good when you're Mozzie.
Hi! I'm Gioia, a Golden Doodle with a heart as big as my paws and curls as soft as clouds. I'm turning 5 soon, which means more birthday treats and belly rubs—my favourite! I live for cuddles, kisses, and being the center of attention (because, let's face it, how could you not love this face?). Walks are amazing—especially when they end with treats and happy tail wags. When the TV turns on, I turn up—I bark at every animal I see on screen. Don’t ask me why. It just feels right. My family thinks it’s hilarious! But the best part of my week? Going to Social Pup, where I run wild, play hard, and make memories with my furry besties.
I'm Duke, a five-year-old Shorkie (that’s Shih Tzu meets Yorkie) with the face of an angel and the appetite of a snack-obsessed gremlin. I may be pint-sized, but my personality is king-size. My signature look? One ear permanently up, like I'm just waiting to hear the treat bag crinkle. I live for belly rubs, judging silently if you stop too soon, and have mastered the art of pretending I haven’t already eaten. Food is fine, but treats? That’s true love. My hobbies include napping, side-eyeing empty food bowls, and being unbearably cute on purpose. With my expressive eyes, snack radar, and lovable antics, I'm not just a dog, I'm a lifestyle.
Hi, I'm Oliver Johnathan Ambrose... Otherwise known as Bubba Shrimp, a spicy VERY clingy 6lb Bichpoo (Bichon/Toy poodle) with a 200lb personality! I am a HUGE fan of The Social Pup, ever since day 1, over 3 years ago. Leanne and her incredible team love me and I goes NUTZ when we pull into the parking lot. Usually glued to my moms side, this is the only time I get sooo excited that I can't wait to get away from mom! I love loooong walks, BUNNIES!! and car rides. I'm a big napper and picky eater. My Nanna makes me sausages... I LOVE sausages, and my nanny too. Life is good.
My name is Minnie Moose, but you might know me as The Monster, The Mini Monster, Dummy, or Mins. I might be 5 years old, but I still play with my friends at the Social Pup every day as if I were still a puppy! My family says I'm special because I have something called "Epilepsy". All I know is that I get extra treats 3 times a day because of it"! My favourite hobby is protecting my backyard from squirrels and birds, I do a great job at being a pointer and pointing them out to my family. My other hobbies include carrying pillows around the house, chewing on my feet as if they were chicken wings, and sleeping upside down on the couch!
We’re excited to o cially welcome Kennedy Grams to the Carruthers Walker Financial team.

A huge congratulations to this year's Rose of Sharon graduates - Abby, Amber, Fernanda, Jorden, and Sarina! Your strength, determination, and resilience inspire us all. Balancing motherhood and education is no small feat and you've done it with grace and grit. Rose of Sharon Services for Young Mothers celebrated their 2025 graduating class on June 24th. In collaboration with the York Catholic District School Board, Rose of Sharon supports individuals who are prenatal and parenting in the completion of credits towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Congratulations to this year's graduating class!
This summer has been a time of listening, learning, and rea rming my commitment to serve Newmarket–Aurora with purpose and integrity. Whether in Ottawa or at home, each experience has reminded me of one clear truth: public service begins and ends with community.
In Ottawa, I was honoured to be appointed to the Standing Committee on Finance. As families face rising costs, my focus has been on demanding greater transparency and ensuring every tax dollar is spent wisely. Canadians deserve leadership grounded in responsibility and results.
Here at home, I marked my first Canada Day as your Member of Parliament with a pancake breakfast, where I had the opportunity to connect directly with many of you. Your concerns— particularly those related to affordability and safety—continue to guide my work in Parliament. Later that day, I stood alongside Mayor Tom Mrakas and MP Costas Menegakis at a moving Rea rmation of Citizenship Ceremony, which served as a poignant reminder of the shared values that bind us as Canadians.
I was also proud to attend the graduation of three new Central York firefighters—young leaders who’ve earned our trust through courage and discipline. At Sacred Heart High School, I had the honour of presenting the Governor General’s Academic Medal, which recognizes the academic excellence and the promise of our next generation.
With Parliament in recess, I’ll continue to be present across Newmarket–Aurora —meeting with residents, Sandra Cobena MP, Newmarket–Aurora
On July 11th, the Community Craft Beverage Festival presented a cheque for $1,552.50 to the Newmarket Food Pantry. Funds were raised during the festival through ticket sales and the sales of one-of-a-kind mugs created at NewMakeIt. We love to see the community come together to support one another!

Support for the Women’s Centre of York Region has never been more urgent.
1 in 3 women in Canada will experience intimate partner violence or sexual violence in their lifetime, and police reported intimate partner violence in York Region has risen consistently over the past decade. This is a catastrophic impact on families and communities. Children who witness domestic violence are also more likely to experience or perpetrate violence as adults. Timely intervention makes the difference between safety and danger — even life or death. To break the cycle, we must invest in prevention, education, awareness, and wraparound supports for families.
At the Women’s Centre, we do just that. Our services not only provide a lifeline to women, but also support the whole family to thrive, through education, case management, access to housing, trauma-informed mental health recovery, and pathways to economic resilience. These supports change individual lives and reduce pressure on public systems and strengthen our communities.
Every $1 invested in services for women experiencing violence saves approximately $6 in future costs related to emergency services, justice interventions, and lost productivity.
With your support, we can move more women off waitlists and into safety. We can equip more families with the tools to build economic prosperity. And we can expand our programs for children and youth to break the cycle of violence before it begins.
Because every York Region family deserves to live in safety, with dignity, and with hope — and together, we can build safer communities.

The Metropolitan Electric Railway, which ran from Toronto to Jackson’s Point on Lake Simcoe, arrived in Newmarket in 1899. Originally the tracks ran up Yonge Street to Mulock Sideroad, then across the fields and then right up the centre of Main Street.
Largely due to the complaints of Main St. merchants, stating the trains frightened the horses on the street, the railway was re-routed in 1905. At this time new tracks were laid on the west side of Main Street, where they went beside the Old Town Hall, through where the Newmarket Public Library now stands and continued on Raglan Street where it turned onto Queen Street and then turned north, over this concrete arch and onto Lake Simcoe.
The same year the railway was re-routed, a new station was built on the north side of Botsford St. Originally a single storey building, it was later enlarged to two storeys to the accommodate the Station Master’s residence upstairs. Freight sheds were also erected.
The electric railway system grew in popularity and experienced much growth. Extra cars were added to accommodate for the increased passenger tra c and locals used the “Metro” for leisure pursuits such as going to Toronto for shopping trips, visiting Lake Simcoe and Lake Wilcox
The railway was eventually discontinued as the popularity of the automobile increased. The section between Richmond Hill and Newmarket was removed in the early 1930’s and the rest later taken over by the T.T.C. The Botsford St. Railway Station was demolished in 1986. Today only photos like this, showing one of the concrete structures that supported the Metro, exist to keep alive the memory of this once bustling railway system.

Summer has been heating up in EG. Beat the heat at one of our splash pads! Splash pads are open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. and are a great way to cool down. Find a splash pad near you at eastgwillimbury.ca/Parks.
Given the extreme heat we have experienced, I want to remind residents that a car in the sun is too hot to handle and can turn into a furnace, overheating pets and people very quickly. Protect your loved ones and never leave them in parked cars, even with the windows down. Just a few minutes can be dangerous.
Summer continues and EG has another signature event taking place on August 9. Mark your calendars and plan to experience Celebrating the Arts: A Taste of Culture. Stop by the Civic Centre on between 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for this FREE event that connects the community through arts, culture, food and heritage. Learn more at eastgwillimbury.ca/TOC.
Taylor Made Band lit up the park in East Gwillimbury on July 22nd, during the summer Music Nights series! All throughout July, the community gathered every Tuesday night for FREE live music, great company, and the feel-good vibes of summer. Guests were encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item in support of the local Food Pantry, while enjoying tasty eats and drinks from local vendors. Live music, giving back, and good food under the stars - it doesn’t get much better than that!
And now as we look ahead, we can start getting excited about fall recreation programs. The Fall 2025 and Winter 2026 Health and Active Living Guide will be available online starting August 13. Be sure to take a look to discover the great programs happening in EG. We’re also excited to showcase a new look and navigation to the guide! The new guide links straight to ActiveNet, for the most up-to-date program information! The new Health and Active Living Guide will be available at eastgwillimbury.ca/Guide.
Lastly, EG’s annual budget process is of great interest to our residents, as it should be. As we move into the fall season, Council will begin 2026 budget deliberations, and the input received from our residents and businesses helps us to prepare for these discussions. A budget survey has been made available, and I encourage you to complete this survey - sharing your thoughts, ideas, priorities, and what is important to you as an EG resident or business. These comments will be compiled and consulted as we prepare our 2026 Business Plan and Budget. Please take a minute to complete the budget survey at eastgwillimbury.ca/budget.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!

The internet offers amazing ways to stay connected with family and friends —whether it’s sharing memories, joining virtual events, or simply checking in. But it’s important to stay safe while doing so. These five simple tips can help protect your personal information and give you peace of mind online.
1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Create complex passwords using a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using personal information like birthdays. Use different passwords for each account and consider a password manager. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever possible for extra protection.
2. Be Cautious with Personal Information
Think twice before sharing personal details online, especially on social media. Quizzes and games can collect sensitive data. Adjust privacy settings to limit who sees your content.
3. Recognize Phishing Scams
Watch for signs of phishing—such as unexpected messages, poor grammar, or urgent requests for personal info. Don’t click on suspicious links. If unsure, pause and check with someone you trust.
4. Use Trusted Websites
Only shop or bank online through secure websites. Look for "https://" and a padlock icon in your browser’s address bar.
5. Monitor Financial Statements
Regularly check your bank and credit card statements. Report any suspicious charges to your bank right away.

This campaign is more than just T-shirts; it’s a powerful reminder of the incredible spirit of Newmarket: a town that shows up, gives back, and stands proudly for inclusion, kindness, and love. #NWMRKTproud
The Town of Newmarket recognized Kevin Mills with the Honorary Citizen Award, during a ceremony at the site of the Honorary Citizen monument in Fairy Lake Park, on July 2nd. Kevin, who sadly passed away in April, was a former advanced care paramedic, an accessibility advocate, and member of the Town’s Accessibility Advisory Committee. He sustained a spinal cord injury in 2009 at the age of 28 resulting in quadriplegia. Refusing to let his injury define him, Kevin and his wife Heather founded the Walk it Off spinal recovery centre and created the non-profit Peddling Possibilities to support and inspire people with disabilities to become more active. In 2023, Kevin hand-cycled across Canada to raise awareness and support for people with disabilities. Kevin was also honoured with Newmarket’s Key to the City in 2023. Celebrating Kevin’s outstanding service and commitment to the Town of Newmarket, community members and supporters gathered as Kevin’s family unveiled a permanent plaque and accepted the Honorary Citizen Award on his behalf. The recognition will forever honour his care and generosity towards the community.

As we enter the final weeks of summer, I want to take a moment to thank you for the conversations, ideas, and warm welcomes during my visits across the community. August is a time when many of us pause to enjoy the summer, spend time with family, and reconnect with our communities. It is also a time to reflect on where we are as a province — and where we are headed.
Over the past several months, our government has remained focused on delivering practical solutions to the challenges people are facing. We are making steady progress on expanding health care services, accelerating housing construction, and building the roads, transit, and infrastructure needed to support a growing Ontario.
This work is grounded in a clear commitment: to protect the services people rely on while creating the conditions for long-term growth and

"Aurora is a dynamic and welcoming community where families and businesses thrive together. When I moved here with my family, I was drawn by the safe, supportive environment where my children could grow and connect meaningfully. I chose to open my business here because Aurora offers a strong ecosystem, incredible networks, and the support needed to build something impactful. It’s a place where innovation and community go hand in hand — an inspiring place to live, work, and grow."
Established in the 1800s, Aurora is a growing town with the essence of new ideas, new technologies and constant learning.
