Tom Taylor’s journey is deeply rooted in Newmarket. He attended a small two-room schoolhouse at St. John’s Chrysostom, before going on to Newmarket High School. From an early age, he was taught the value of community service. From his first election to Town Council in 1961 to over three decades in public o ce—including as Mayor of Newmarket —Tom has served with humility and heart. His enduring passion for social equity and environmental stewardship shaped many community initiatives: the beloved Tom Taylor Trail, support for affordable housing, and foundational roles in organizations like Inn From the Cold, Big Brothers of York Region, Community Living Central York, and Habitat for Humanity YR. Today, Tom remains an active volunteer and mentor, encouraging younger generations to step up and give back. His lifelong service has earned him many honours, including the Queen’s Confederation Medal (1992), the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal (2012), and the title of Newmarket Citizen of the Year in 2017. Most recently, he was proud to be named a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal in 2025. In neighbouring Aurora, Tim Jones mirrored that dedication through over 28 years on Town Council, including 12 as Mayor of Aurora. His tenure is marked by transformational projects, including securing the Magna and YRP headquarters for the town and launching Aurora’s first Parks and Recreation Master Plan. A founder of the Character Community Initiative, Jones championed values-based education and helped bring lasting impact to York Region schools. Jones continues to make his mark through events like the Tim Jones Charity Classic, now in its 11th year, and ongoing involvement with the Mayor’s Charity Golf Tournament. His collaborative spirit and deep-rooted commitment to service have earned him accolades including the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal and the Aurora Rotary’s Paul Harris Fellowship. His community contributions have been so impactful that Aurora named a trail in his honour; the Tim Jones Trail - a nod to his commitment to healthy, connected communities, and the Character Community Room at the York Region Community Safety Village, was also dedicated in his name.
Together with community leader Steve Hinder, Taylor and Jones were also instrumental in the founding of Neighbourhood Network, a grassroots organization that connects thousands of volunteers to meaningful local causes. Two men, one shared mission: to lead with compassion, to serve with purpose, and to leave their communities better than they found them. #GoodNeighbours

June marks a special milestone—Ontario’s first-ever o cial Seniors’ Month, following the passage of my Private Member’s Bill, which received Royal Assent in December. It’s a proud moment to see our province formally recognize the many ways seniors enrich our communities. I look forward to celebrating with you at my Second Annual Seniors’ Expo on June 6th, from 9a.m. to 1p.m. at the Newmarket Community Centre and Lions Hall. With local exhibitors, engaging speakers, and a complimentary tearoom, it promises to be a wonderful morning of connection and information.
Last month, the 2025 Ontario Budget was released, focused on protecting workers, businesses, and the economy. I am happy to share with you that Ontario is permanently cutting the gas tax and taking tolls off highway 407 East. We are always looking at ways to put more money back into the pockets of Ontario families and help reduce the cost of everyday essentials. A new $5 billion “Protecting Ontario” fund will ensure businesses have the emergency support they need to remain resilient during global disruptions, safeguarding jobs, and economic growth across sectors. The budget also includes a $1 billion investment over three years to expand and modernize skilled trades training—providing more opportunities for young people and mid-career workers to build rewarding careers in critical areas like construction, manufacturing, and health care.
Finally, June is Pride Month, and this year York Pride celebrates 25 incredible years! I’ll be attending the York Pride Parade on June 21st, and look forward to another joyful, inclusive celebration full of energy and community spirit. I look forward to seeing you in the community…and remember, I am a phone call away
Tim Hortons locations across Aurora generously donated proceeds from their delicious Smile Cookies chocolate chunk treats topped with hand-decorated pink and blue icing - to support CMHA this year! A special thank you to MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy for joining the CMHA team to help decorate these sweet smiles and support such a meaningful cause. Together, we’re making a difference in our community - one cookie at a time!
The Ontario government is investing over $17 million to support public transit in York Region through the 2024-25 Gas Tax program. This funding can be used to expand service hours, increase routes, purchase new vehicles and improve accessibility to increase transit ridership. “This funding is great news for people not only in Newmarket—Aurora, but across York Region” said Dawn Gallagher Murphy, MPP for Newmarket—Aurora. “Under the leadership of Premier Ford, we are investing in local transit to give York Region residents more ways to connect with work, school and the people and places that matter most to them.”
Abuse Hurts is ever grateful to our Champion of the Month for June, Ms. Sheila Crosby. In early October of 2024, our bookkeeper of 17 years passed away suddenly. This event left the charity in quite a predicament, what with our busiest time of the year just beginning, financial reporting needed, tax receipts to send out, fundraising initiatives and multiple grants to financially administer, as well as the usual paying of bills, payroll and so much more. It was quite a daunting task for anyone to take over as a replacement. But our dear friend and wonderful volunteer, Sheila, stepped up to the plate to fill in the gap until we found a replacement.
With her advanced knowledge and experience to draw from, she was able to not only navigate our complicated waters but also make many improvements to our practices and daily administration. This was not a small contribution as she volunteered an incredible amount of hours over 6+ months, helping us to meet all our financial needs, requirements and even help us to gain more e ciency and understanding.
We are blessed to have her provide us with peace of mind during a time that is normally very stressful. We were able to continue functioning in all our programs without skipping a beat because she bridged the gap.
Sheila, for her many contributions over the years to us and the community at large, was a recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal. Thank you, Sheila – we love you!

Congratulations to Joeen C. of Newmarket, the lucky winner of this year’s Quilted Treasures Quilt Show! The ROYQG were honoured to have MPP Dawn Gallagher-Murphy join them at Riverwalk Commons on April 27th, to draw the winning ticket. She praised the incredible work of the Region of York Quilters Guild—raising funds for the Food Bank of York Region and creating quilts for local shelters and hospices. Thank you to everyone who supported this meaningful cause!
The Neighbour Media team was honoured to be invited by the Town of Bradford to come and check out the Bradford Farmers Market! Celebrating its 18th year, the market's goals are to grant the residents of BWG and surrounding areas access to a viable farmers’ market in their own community, to provide a venue for local producers, farmers and artisans to sell and showcase their products, to promote healthy local living; to offer volunteer opportunities, and to engage local groups, musicians, organizations and foundations operating in the community. Do yourself a favour and visit our neighbours in Bradford West Gwillimbury at the Bradford Farmers Market!
Excitement is building at NewRoads Automotive Group as we prepare for one of our most meaningful events yet — the 10th and final LakeRide, our annual cycling fundraiser in support of the Mental Health Prgram at Southlake Hospital. This year marks a decade of LakeRide, and we’re determined to make it our most memorable and impactful ride ever.
With a bold goal of raising $500,000, we’re counting on the incredible generosity and spirit of our community to come together once again. Starting at the NewRoads Performing Arts Centre, the event will feature various ride distances to accommodate all levels of cyclists, from beginners to seasoned riders. And thanks to our amazing partners at BikeSports in Newmarket, we’ll be ra ing off a top-tier bicycle to help boost fundraising efforts.
Beyond the ride itself, the day promises something for everyone — with live music, guest speakers, kids' activities, and delicious food all on deck. It's a true celebration of community and compassion, and we can’t wait to see everyone there.
LakeRide isn’t the only highlight this season. NewRoads is also proud to be leading the Pride Parade in June, demonstrating our continued commitment to inclusivity, diversity, and local engagement.
At NewRoads, giving back is in our DNA. Our employees are always ready to step up and support causes that matter. We’re proud to be part of a community that cares — and even prouder to ride alongside it one last time.
On May 1st, NewRoads Automotive Group presented a cheque to Girls Inc. for $10,000 - funds raised through NewRoads signature event, Girls Night Out.

If there's one piece of advice I would suggest in high school, it would be to take CO-OP. Engaging in real life experiences as well as hands-on learning has taught me more than any other class. Not only have I gained more knowledge through my CO-OP program, but I have experienced the responsibilities of having a job and a role in a company. My CO-OP placement was with Neighbour Media, where they treated me more as a valued member of the team than a student which made me feel as if I was a part of the company. My placement highlighted the importance of time management and responsibility. Being held accountable to tasks and deadlines ensures consistent progress, builds trust, and reinforces a strong work ethic.
During my time with Neighbour Media, I worked under the guidance of Lynnette, who played a big part in shaping my understanding of media, marketing, and content strategy. Throughout my time with the company, I understood the di culties of owning a business. At Neighbour, Lynnette has been an exceptional supervisor throughout my placement. She gave me the freedom to take on tasks while being there for support and feedback. Lynnette made me feel like a valued member of the team and provided me with structure and mentorship. At Neighbour Media I was given the opportunity to create and analyze social media content. I gained insight on planning digital campaigns and learned how to use digital tools to manage projects.
It felt as if I was being trusted with responsibilities that had an impact on the company which boosted my confidence, not only in my placement but even outside the workplace.I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned from Lynnette and the Neighbour Media team, as I now feel more prepared for my future in business. -Lukas

They call me Chucky, and I'm part kangaroo, part opera singer, and all husky! I definitely live up to my name... I'm just pure chaos wrapped in fluff. I don't walk, I jump. I don't just howl, I scream. And oh, I love to talk back. Loudly. With the energy of a toddler on espresso and the sass of a teenager who knows they are always right, I'm never boring.
Hi. I’m Pico. I’m a 21-month-old Rottweiler, but don’t let the breed fool you—I’m 90% sass, 10% drool, and 100% sweetheart. I love snacks (obviously), naps (mandatory), and hanging out with my besties at daycare where I reign as the uno cial Queen of Zoomies. I’m silly, stubborn, loyal, and basically the definition of a ride-or-die… unless there’s a treat involved, in which case: I’ll circle back. I’m the sweetest girl you’ll ever meet—unless you touch my snacks. Then we might have a problem. Anyway, thanks for coming to my TED Talk. Belly rubs now, please.
Woof! I’m Sydney, the Morkie queen. Small but mighty, full of mean—er, queenly—gleam! I bark at squirrels, chase my tail, sniff every corner, follow every trail. Sassy and spunky, treats are my jam, Toys get shredded? Yep, that’s my plan! I strut like a boss with a wagging tail, In my world, I’m big, never frail. Tiny paws, huge heart, a bark full of sass, I’m the pup who’s top of my class! So stop and sniff—come join the fun, With me around, life’s never dull!
Hi, I’m Nala—also known as Bug, Buggers, Tinkybutt, or Nals. I’m an Olde English Bulldogge: equal parts snuggle queen, neighbourhood sheriff, and professional sunbather. I love hoomans (especially mine) and give world-class hugs that feel like emotional support squish. My snore? Like a calm noise machine. I get annoyed when Mum scrolls Instagram looking at other dogs—rude. I judge your life choices with my side-eye and expect full attention at all times. I’m sweet, salty, stubborn, and built like a meatloaf in a fur coat.
Hi I’m Georgia the Bulldog. You wouldn’t think it, but I’m totally hardcore when it comes to sports, so much so that my mom’s call me ‘Hurricane Georgia’. I rather play ball in the backyard than go out for walks. I love to swim at the lake or my pool but I need a life jacket ‘cause I’m a little top heavy. I’m the boss of the house even though my mom’s think they are. And yes, you’ve guessed it… I love my mealtimes, snacks and treats…ahhhh well…mostly the treats!
My name is Barney, but my mom calls me her “baby boy” while staring deeply into my eyes. I think she’s obsessed with me. The little one is my adopted sister Riley. I didn’t ask for a sister, so I'm not sure why she showed up. Don’t be fooled by her cuteness, she is trouble. Did you know our mom owns The Social Pup? Ya, it has its perks like free samples, cool looking clothes and TREATS! But she also has groomers and trainers, which isn’t as fun as play time. Did you know that’s MY face on her website? I’m so famous.

The Chris Cartwright Team’s 2nd Annual Youth Market was bursting with energy on May 10th at Market Brewing! From cards to keychains, crafts to cookies, young entrepreneurs aged 8 to 16 showed up with big ideas, bold spirit, and some seriously cool products. The talent and excitement were contagious as these future CEOs welcomed shoppers, shared their stories, and proudly sold their creations. A huge shout-out to everyone who came out to support these rising stars - this is what community (and creativity!) is all about!
The Newmarket Post O ce, located at the south-west corner of Main Street and Park Avenue was constructed 1914-1915. The structure is actually the 4th post o ce in Newmarket. The original post o ce (the second one in York County) was located in a store belonging to early settler Elisha Beman at the south-west corner of Main and Water Streets, where the Newmarket Hydro o ce would later be located.
The Post O ce was constructed in the Italianate style of architecture and features a dominant bell / clock tower. Among the notable features are the decorative brick-patterned arches which contain key stones over the entrances and windows.
Decades later a large federal building would be built to the west of the post o ce along Park Avenue. The building would later be designated an historic structure by both the Town of Newmarket and the Federal Government.
The old building ceased to function as a post o ce in the 1990s as part of Canada Post’s privatization initiatives. The building was eventually purchased by Mac Lewis in 1998 who embarked on a massive heritage renovation project, converting the old post o ce into a senior retirement residence. At this time the structure was known as the “Clock Tower”. Years later the retirement residence was closed and its residents moved to another location.
After years of remaining vacant, with various considered proposals, the old post o ce was eventually sold and re-purposed.
Today the building is striving as the “Post Mark Hotel”, a modern fully-accessibly upscale hotel, featuring 55 rooms and two restaurants, among other amenities.

This month Neigbour features a cover photo of my father and Tim Jones. I thought I would take the opportunity to reflect on my father's time as Mayor of Newmarket and what I have learned from him over the years.
First and foremost, my father believed that as an elected representative you should help people. You should help people with their issues, help people facing challenges, and especially help those who are struggling with the basics like food, housing, and health. He also believed in taking risks to build a great community. Don't be afraid to be bold and ambitious for Newmarket. Also, if a direction looks politically risky or complicated but it is the right thing to do, you do it, you don't take the easy route. He also believed as Mayor you should be humble and you shouldn't take yourself too seriously. At the end of the day, you are not in the role of Mayor to be important, you are in the role to help people and make sure Newmarket is a great place to live.
Finally, he taught me to work hard. If you really care about people and the Town, you will work hard to always do better. In short, my father believed in caring, doing the right thing, staying humble, and working hard. I try to bring those values to my job as Mayor each day and I consider myself lucky to have had him as my role model.

As the saying goes, "It takes a village to raise a child." At Rose of Sharon, we witness this every day as our community rallies to support pregnant and parenting young mothers on their journey. But supporting a non-profit is equally about teamwork: "It takes a community to support a local charity so the local charity can support the community."
Our free programs—ranging from onsite high school and parenting workshops to essential supplies like food and diapers—are only possible thanks to the generosity of donors and fundraisers. By working together, we transform small acts of kindness into life-changing support for young families.

Thank you for placing your trust in me to serve as your Member of Parliament. I take this responsibility with deep humility, and I will work every day to continue earning your trust.
Over the past 18 months, I’ve heard your stories—on doorsteps,
I’ve spoken with young couples priced out of their own community. Seniors making impossible choices at the grocery store. Parents concerned about safety. Business owners held back by delays and bad policy.
What I’ve heard again and again is a sense of urgency: the government simply doesn’t act fast enough.
I want you to know: I’ve heard you. And I’m here to be your voice in Ottawa.
Canadians are doing their part. They’re working hard, following the rules, and holding up their end of the bargain. It’s time for the government to do the same.
I’m ready to get to work for you, and with you.
It was all hands on deck on May 15th at Rose of Sharon, when they received over $100,000 dollars in beauty supply products from Trade Secrets and Archdiocese of Toronto

As we gather to celebrate Canada Day, we all have something to be proud of. Residing in the best country in the world is not just about waving the red and white or singing our anthem — it’s about the pride we share in our values of freedom, fairness, respect, and opportunity. It’s about the strength we draw from our diversity and the kindness that brings our communities together, from coast to coast to coast. Being Canadian is something we carry with us every day; in the way we treat each other and in the hopes we hold for our country’s future.
Canada is a land of promise, built by generations who believed in hard work, hope, and the power of unity. And today, as the world faces new challenges, we must remember that our sovereignty and prosperity are not to be taken for granted — they are privileges we must protect.
Our resources, our lands, and our future belong to Canadians. We will always stand united against any force that seeks to divide us or undermine our national interest.
On this Canada Day, let us renew our commitment to each other and to the country we call home. Together, we are building a future where every Canadian can thrive, and where the younger generation can inherit a nation that is strong, free, and united.
Happy Canada Day!

Every year, I’m honored to proclaim June as Pride Month in the Town of Aurora, celebrating what truly makes our community special—its people. Aurora thrives because of its diversity, and Pride Month serves as a powerful reminder of the strength that comes from unity, acceptance, and mutual respect.
At a time when division can feel more present than ever, Pride Month offers us the opportunity to come together, uplift one another, and celebrate love in all its forms. The journey toward inclusivity never stops, and this month stands as both a celebration of progress and a recognition of the challenges still faced by members of the LGBTQ2S+ community.
This month, we’ll proudly raise the Pride Flag at Town Hall—a symbol of love, respect, and belonging. Then, on June 21, I’ll be marching alongside Council and Town staff in the 25th annual York Pride Parade in Newmarket—a highlight of the year that brings joy, connection, and plenty of colour! Keep an eye out for our Bylaw vehicle in full rainbow mode, rolling through town in celebration.
And this year, for the first time ever, we launched the Aurora Pride Festival at Town Square! A heartfelt thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate this exciting new tradition.
The Town is also proud to proclaim June as Italian Heritage Month, a time to recognize and celebrate the rich cultural contributions of the Italian community to our shared history and identity. In honour of this occasion, we warmly invite everyone in our community to join us for a special flag raising ceremony at Aurora Town Square on Monday, June 2, at 9:15 a.m. Let’s come together to show our appreciation and support for Italian heritage and the vibrant traditions that continue to enrich our town.
Aurora is a town for everyone, and it’s because of our incredible residents and staff that we continue to foster a welcoming, supportive, and inclusive community. Let’s celebrate Pride, stand together, and remind each other that love, kindness, and unity will always shine the brightest.

However you define quality of life, most people want to maintain it well into their 70s, 80s and 90s. Fortunately, seniors in Canada live in a country that ranks high in global quality-of-life indexes, like the OECD Better Life Index. Still, there are simple ways to improve life after 65—by staying socially connected, active, curious, and engaged.
Stay Connected
Want to make this Father’s Day is a hole-in-one?

We look forward to seeing you.
Strong social ties can help you feel younger and healthier. Whether it’s meeting friends, joining a club, or chatting with a neighbour, meaningful relationships reduce the risk of depression and dementia, while boosting mood and brain health.
Keep Moving
Regular physical activity is key to longevity and well-being. Yet only one in five older Canadians gets the recommended 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week. Enjoyable activities—like mall walking, dancing, or seated workouts—help maintain strength and independence.
Give Back
Helping others is a proven way to support your own mental and physical health. Older adults who volunteer or contribute to their community often report less stress, stronger relationships, and a greater sense of purpose.
Consider Senior Living
If daily chores feel overwhelming or your social circle is shrinking, a vibrant senior living residence like Amica could be the fresh start you need. With engaging activities, personalized care, and a supportive community, you can focus on living well.

What is your most memorable community moment?
One of my most memorable community moments was organizing a digital storytelling workshop where seniors shared a story from their life. Watching their faces light up with pride—and seeing the powerful connections form as we experienced their stories together—reminded me exactly why I’m so passionate about my work.
What is one thing that most people don’t know about you? I used to dread presentations in school—so much so that I’d either lose marks or say my speech to the teacher during recess. Funny enough, I ended up in a role where speaking in front of groups became part of my everyday work.
What is your favourite song, artist/group or genre of music?
Jack Johnson is my favourite—his music is warm, thoughtful, and down-to-earth. It’s the perfect soundtrack for relaxing after a busy day.
You’ve worked hard for your home Is your home working hard for you?

The outreach focus has been primarily on adults. Now we have an opportunity to engage with our younger residents to help us spread the word about the importance of cancer preventative measures and early screening.

Sharon Museum and Gardens (SMG) (formerly Sharon Temple National Historic Site and Museum) was constructed by the Children of Peace - an Upper Canada Quaker sect - from 1825 - 1831. The Temple is an architectural symbol of their vision of a society based on the values of peace, equality, and social justice. It opened as a museum in 1918 and was designated a National Historic Site in 1990 due to its historical and architectural significance. The acquisition and restoration of the Temple by the York Pioneers and Historical Society in 1917 was one of Canada's first examples of historic preservation. Under the leadership of David Willson, the Children of Peace established a cooperative economy, founding Ontario's first credit union and a land-sharing system that helped make Hope (now Sharon) one of the most prosperous farming communities of their time. They helped to establish the first farmers' cooperative - the Farmers' Storehouse - which collectively marketed wheat and lent money to local farmers in need. Caring and charitable, they also built the province's first homeless shelter.
July 1st, 11am - 4pm
Each year, we welcome hundreds of residents to the museum to celebrate Canada Day in a place that is so important to the history of our country. Featuring games, bouncy castles, BBQ, live entertainments and more, this is a must attend family event.

August 17th, 11am
In 2021, we first partnered with Highway 11 Cruisers Car Club to host a classic car, truck, and bike show at the Sharon Temple. This event brings hundreds of vehicles ranging in make, model, and year to the site. Featuring a BBQ, prizes, and awards, this is the newest and biggest event in East Gwillimbury. You don't want to miss this one! All proceeds from this event support the preservation of the Sharon Temple.
Their commitment to political and social justice led the Children of Peace to champion the political reform movement of the 1830s and find an important place in the development of Canadian democracy. They supported William Lyon Mackenzie's politics and frequently appeared either by mention or their own pen in his newspaper, where they stood in firm opposition to the Family Compact. After the Rebellions of 1837 and 1838, they campaigned for the elections of Robert Baldwin and Louis-Hippolyte LaFontaine - both of whom would later become known as the "Fathers of Responsible Government" in Canada.
The Children of Peace cultivated music wholeheartedly both inside and outside of the Temple, recognizing its educational and community-building value. They created the first civilian band in Canada and housed many of Ontario's earliest organs. Sharon Museum & Gardens is now operated as a Museum by the Sharon Temple Museum Society.
