From a young age in Sudbury, Joe Derochie’s world revolved around athletics. With a family deeply rooted in sports, it was natural for him to imagine a future in physiotherapy or athletic therapy. His passion for athletics led him to Queen’s University, where he earned a degree in Physical and Health Education, graduating with honours and distinction. A four-time Academic All-Canadian and Assistant Captain of the Varsity Men’s Hockey Team, Joe excelled both in the classroom and on the ice.

After graduation, Joe took time to reflect on his true calling. Rather than focusing on recovery, he felt drawn to the idea of helping athletes and everyday people achieve optimal performance. Personal training became his starting point, but he quickly realized he wanted to create something bigger—something that could impact more lives. That’s when he discovered Orangetheory Fitness (OTF). At just 25, Joe purchased the Newmarket territory and moved there without knowing anyone. Today, at 37, he owns two thriving studios—Newmarket and Whitby—both consistently ranked in the top 10 nationwide. His Whitby studio was recognized in 2018 as the most highly utilized in Canada, and in 2019, he was named Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the Newmarket Chamber of Commerce. More recently, he earned a spot on the Central York Chamber of Commerce’s Top 40 Under 40 list. Joe’s impact extends far beyond the walls of his studios. Under his leadership, OTF Newmarket and Whitby have raised over $30,000 for Southlake through Fit Fundraisers, supported local youth sports, and contributed to initiatives such as Mental Health in Motion, Easter Seals, and toy drives with York Regional Police. In 2023, he launched the Orange Crush 5K, a community race complete with a kids’ run, costume contest, and all proceeds directed to local charities like the Newmarket Food Pantry and Shades of Hope Wildlife Refuge. Beyond business, Joe is passionate about mentorship and leadership. He serves as a guest lecturer at St. Andrew’s College and frequently speaks at local high schools, helping students explore fitness, leadership, and teamwork.

For Joe, success isn’t measured in memberships or awards—it’s about building a “community within the community.” His drive to inspire, uplift, and give back is what fuels both his business and his life. #GoodNeighbour

5 TIPS for more OPENS, more CLICKS and less STRESS

Skip the word “newsletter.”

That word screams “BORING” and “delete.”

Use a subject line that teases value or sparks curiosity instead.

Give More Than You Sell.

Stick to the 5:1 rule — for every one promo email, send five that share helpful tips, relatable stories, or real-life advice. People buy when they feel understood and supported.

Pick ONE Goal Per Email.

Trying to do too much? Your reader gets overwhelmed. Focus each email on one clear goal or call-to-action — like clicking a link, replying, or downloading something.

Try a (Single) Emoji in Your Subject Line.

One emoji can help your email stand out and boost open rates. Just one though — not six. You’re going for “fun,” not “confetti explosion.”

Use an Email Program Like Flodesk.

Earth Every Day

Nature Has a New Home in Newmarket –Rocky arrives at

Upper Canada Mall

When we think about connecting to nature, most of us picture the scenic moments—weekend hikes, bike rides through the countryside, walks on the beach. But nature isn’t something we need to escape to. She’s already here, all around us: in the warmth of the morning sun on your face, the joy of a new leaf on a houseplant, and the resiliency of a dandelion growing through the cracks of a sidewalk.

These aren’t just passing moments. They're essential ones. When we pause to relish in them, we feel connected, grounded, and so, so alive.

Rooted in their connection to the outdoors, Rocky (formerly Rocky Mountain Soap Co.) owners Karina Birch and Cam Baty began crafting natural products from a small workshop in Canmore, Alberta. Inspired by the idea that everyday moments connect us to nature, the brand started with just two employees and a handful of products—and has since grown into a trusted Canadian brand offering more than 350 essentials for your face, body, and hair.

Rocky’s new Upper Canada Mall location offers more than a place to shop—it’s designed to bring nature indoors. Crafted from natural materials, the store guides guests through immersive sensory experiences centered around the in-store sink, where they can try products, enjoy textures and aromas inspired by the Canadian wilderness, and hear the stories behind each formula from knowledgeable store associates.

From the beginning, Rocky has followed nature’s lead—prioritizing purpose over trends and care over convenience. Today, they turn daily routines into opportunities to reconnect with the natural world, helping you live Earth Every Day, wherever you are.

supported individuals had an absolute blast on August 5th with the amazing YIPI students from York Regional carnival day for everyone. Building Our Community Together

A MESSAGE FROM MPP DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

As summer winds down and students head back to school, there is a certain amount of stress that we experience. I read an article recently that provided tips on how to prepare for the shift…I think these are great for students and adults alike. The one I will share with you which I think is important for me, and my son who is off to his first year of University, WAKE UP EARLIER. Honestly, it makes so much sense. Give yourself time in the morning so you are not rushed to get to your first class, or your first meeting. Enjoy some quiet time to gather your thoughts and think about what needs to be accomplished for the day. I will report back to you next month to let you know if this tip has worked for me…and my son.

Supporting Ontario workers remains a top priority. That’s why our government is investing $70 million through the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development to expand training and employment services, including rapid-response POWER Centres and Better Jobs Ontario to help workers retrain quickly and connect with good-paying jobs. We are also investing in the infrastructure that makes growth possible. Premier Ford announced $1.6 billion for municipal water, roads, and servicing infrastructure through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program—giving municipalities the tools to unlock housing, cut costs, and build strong, sustainable neighbourhoods.

I am also thrilled to share that Aurora will soon be home to a new Francophone Village, including a 160-bed long-term care home. With the sale of provincial surplus land at 50 Bloomington Rd to Communauté du Trille Blanc, this new facility will provide seniors with high-quality care in the language of their choice while celebrating our vibrant Francophone culture.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR – Sunday, September 28th – 4th Annual Community BBQ 2pm to 4pm at Riverwalk Commons in Newmarket. A complimentary BBQ with lots of fun for the entire family.

On August 17th, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy was at Ray Twinney Recreation Complex to o cially congratulate the Newmarket Soccer Club on its 65th Anniversary, and for receiving a $46,100 Capital grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) this summer. The year-long grant will help the Club make upgrades and repairs to its bathrooms, playing field, emergency lighting and fire suppression systems to extend the life of the facility and ensure everyone’s safety. Being able to continue to offer programming to over 5,000 members, year-round in its own facility, is instrumental in continuing to be the leading soccer provider in the Town of Newmarket. As a not-forprofit organization, the Club prides itself on delivering the best programming it can, at the most affordable cost to members. NSC is currently accepting registrations for

NEIGHBOURHOOD PETS

"Homework?

I’ll happily chew on that."

Gigi

Hi, I’m Gigi, a fabulous teacup Maltipoo with luxurious blonde hair and a wardrobe that could rival any fashionista’s. I joined my family three years ago, and let’s just say… they were instantly obsessed. I’m the proud big sister to Roxy, my little Yorkie sibling, and I make sure she knows who runs the show around here. I love going on long walks… in my stroller, of course – a girl needs to travel in style! I may be tiny, but trust me – my personality is larger than life, and my heart is just as big.

Leo

I'm Leo and I’m a 2 year old Bernedoodle! I was adopted by my family when I was 5 months old. I still visit with my original family and hang out there when my humans go on vacation. At home, I’m chill- very quiet and love to hang out. I pretend I don’t want to go out for walks but secretly I love it, especially in the cooler weather. I love going to school at The Social Pup- I bark at other dogs to get them to play with me and to chase me. I love them running after me, especially with the ball. I love cheese- I can hear the fridge and cheese packaging open up miles away!

Hi, I’m Roxy, a spunky Yorkie with enough energy for my sister and me! I’m two years old and the younger sister to Gigi - she thinks she’s the boss, so I let her have her moment. I’m always on the go, whether I’m zooming around the house or hanging out with my besties at The Social Pup. When I’m not playing, I love to snuggle with my family for some serious cuddle time. I also take my neighborhood watch duties very seriously and make sure everyone hears my cheerful “hello” bark when I’m watching from the window.

Henry

Hi, I'm Henry, a part Poodle, part Yorkie. If you know me, you know I love rocking my poodle poof! I love my people, but mostly my mom. I want to spend all my time outside, running, chasing after squirrels, and watching my mom to make sure she's still there. I don't really love to snuggle - I told you, I'm part Poodle - I'm too good for your cuddles, but I'll wag my tail and sit good boy for any treat! I like to yell, "What's up!" to any passing dog, person or leaf, as loud as possible with no care in the world. Next time you see me, say hi! I may or may not acknowledge you!

Cali

I’m Cali, a 3 year old Beagle mix with a nose that never misses a snack! I was rescued from Northern Ontario at just 4 months old, and now I’m living my best life! Full of love, walkies, play dates, and snuggles. I’m a huge foodie and can smell Mom’s cooking from a mile away. I get to go on 2–3 walks a day, where I show off my top-tier sni ng skills, but I also take my nap time very seriously. I rotate between my four beds like a true queen. Thanks to my amazing pawrents for giving me the best second chance, and to my daycare pals for all the tail wags and good vibes!

Stanley

I’m Stanley, a super sni ng, furry 16-month-old Morkie, which means I am part Maltese and part Yorkshire Terrier. My favourite things? Chasing cars, bikes, scooters, and anything that blows in the wind. Leaves are my arch-nemesis, but I can’t stop going after them – good thing fall is just around the corner. I am an all-star at tug the rope and ball play. I love my family so much and am always following them around – especially when they get treats such as carrots, apples, and Greek yogurt out. My signature moves are a high five paw or rolling on to my back for tummy rubs. Life’s awesome when you’ve got your family, a breeze, and lots of playtime (especially with my peeps at the Social Pup)!

Fitness As We Age: Optimal Exercises For Seniors

For seniors, the best exercises are those that enhance strength, balance, flexibility, and cardiovascular health while minimizing the risk of injury. A well-rounded fitness routine typically includes aerobic, strength, balance, and flexibility exercises.

Aerobic exercises, such as walking, cycling, and swimming, are excellent choices for seniors as they improve heart health and stamina without putting undue strain on the joints. These low-impact activities can be adjusted to suit the individual's fitness level and can be done regularly for 20-30 minutes, several days a week.

Strength training is also crucial for seniors as it helps maintain muscle mass, which naturally declines with age. Simple exercises like bodyweight squats, leg lifts, or using resistance bands and light weights can help build strength. These exercises enhance mobility and independence, making daily tasks easier. It’s important to start with lighter weights and gradually increase the resistance.

Balance exercises are essential for fall prevention, a significant concern among older adults. Activities like standing on one leg, tai chi, or yoga can improve stability and coordination. These exercises help seniors maintain better posture and reduce the likelihood of falls.

Flexibility exercises, such as stretching or yoga, are vital for maintaining joint mobility and reducing stiffness. Gentle stretching can improve range of motion and reduce muscle tightness, contributing to overall well-being.

Before starting any exercise program, seniors should consult a healthcare provider to ensure the activities are safe and appropriate for their individual health conditions. Regular physical activity can significantly improve the quality of life and maintain independence as one ages.

At Amica Aurora Promenade, our upcoming senior lifestyles residence, we look forward to offering fitness classes every day, hitting on a variety of exercises each week. Learn more when you call Lesley or Ladi at 905-726-2220.

Schools Back!

I wish all the students, parents, and teachers a happy and safe return to school.

September is an exciting time for many, with the return to the routine of the classroom and seeing friends you may not have seen much of over the summer. It can also be an anxious time for some, starting a new grade, a new school, or, for those off to college or university, being away from home for the first time.

For everyone, September also means many more kids on our sidewalks and crossing our streets on their way to and from school.

Be sure to keep an eye out for students walking, riding their bikes and scooters, and getting on and off buses. Also, pay attention to the crossing guards who help kids travel safely. If you have the chance, I encourage everyone to thank the crossing guards for being there.

The Town has been working to enhance safety on our streets. With the summer construction, some sidewalks and intersections have been updated, we added a new pedestrian crossover, with flashing lights, on Gorham Street, and the community safety cameras have been operating around schools for almost a year now.

These cameras have been very successful in slowing tra c near schools and improving safety in the process. Support for them appears to be growing in the province. A recent CAA survey found that nearly three-quarters of Ontario drivers support the use of these cameras in school zones.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable return to school and has a great Fall!

On August 1st, local dignitaries and the community gathered at Peace Park in Newmarket for NACCA’s Emancipation Day Flag Raising Ceremony, a powerful celebration of shared heritage, collective healing, and a future filled with hope. The day featured inspiring guest speakers, the rhythm of a drumming circle, a joyful performance by the KUUMBA summer camp kids, and a delicious African /Caribbean lunch that brought everyone together.

July 31st was National Intern Day! From learning the ropes to making a real impact, interns are the future leaders in the making, and we’re so grateful for everything they do! A huge shout out to our amazing summer intern, Hope, for all she brings to the table. Your hard work, positivity, and fresh perspective make a big difference!

Beyond Comfort Zones: Lindsay’s Life-Changing Charity Trek

This October, KA Team Lead Lindsay Strom will take on her first charity challenge: trekking 100 km across Cambodia in support of women and children who have experienced intimate partner violence.

For five days, she’ll journey alongside other Royal LePage Shelter Foundation champions from across Canada, trekking toward the breathtaking temples of Angkor Wat. The trek will be demanding; long, hot, and humid days, intense jet lag, sleeping in small tents, rustic facilities, and no access to technology.

Each participant covers their own travel costs and must raise at least $6,000 for the Shelter Foundation. Lindsay has surpassed her personal goal of $15,000, raising over $20,000 to date. Of these funds, 80% will go to Sandgate Women’s Shelter of York Region, with 20% supporting national programs to prevent domestic violence. Royal LePage covers all administrative costs, ensuring 100% of donations directly help communities. Since its inception, the Shelter Foundation has raised over $46 million, supporting 200 local women’s shelters and national partners. Royal LePage agents donate a portion of their commissions, and o ces host local fundraisers. These efforts help more than 50,000 women and children annually, providing safe refuge and funding programs that promote healthy relationships, support healing, and help rebuild lives after abuse.

By backing women’s shelters, we ensure women and children have a safe place to turn in times of crisis. If you’d like more info or to make a donation to Lindsay’s fundraiser, simply scan the QR code below. Every contribution over $20 receives a tax receipt.

This project will complement the organization’s Delivering Hope Program by providing survivors with practical life skills training to help them rebuild their lives with dignity, resilience, and respect. Through New Beginnings, participants will gain tools to: strengthen their ability to live independently and safely, improve economic opportunity and financial literacy, build confidence, self-esteem, and healthy boundaries. Summer of Listening and Action in

Newmarket–Aurora

This summer has been an active season in Newmarket–Aurora. I’ve had the opportunity to connect with many of our neighbours at local events, visit business owners and organizations, and host some gatherings with my team.

One event that was a pleasure to host was the barbecue with residents and staff of the Meadows of Aurora, alongside my conservative colleague, MP Anna Roberts. Our seniors built so much of what we now enjoy—not just roads and institutions, but also the culture of care, neighbourliness, and quiet resilience that defines Canada at its best.

With the latest unemployment figures showing a concerning trend—especially among Canadian youth—MP Garnett Genuis and I hosted a roundtable at Treefrog in Newmarket. We gathered local voices from Newmarket-Aurora and beyond to share the real challenges businesses face, particularly in hiring and retaining talent. The best way to find solutions is to start by listening.

I was also honoured to join Senator Leo Housakos in co-hosting a meet and greet with Newmarket–Aurora’s Latino and Hispanic community at Café Andes. Affordability remains the number-one concern we heard, followed closely by public safety and the need to fix our broken and uncontrolled immigration system.

No matter our background, Canadians want the same thing: answers and positive change. As your representative, I remain committed to working for practical solutions that improve life for all in our community.

Sandra Cobena MP, Newmarket–Aurora

The Aurora Black Caucus proudly led this year’s Emancipation Day Celebration on August 9th at Aurora Town Square — a powerful event honoring the end of slavery and celebrating the enduring legacy of freedom in Canada. The day began in Town Square with opening remarks from the Aurora Black Caucus, MP Sandra Cobena, MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy, and Mayor Mrakas, followed by an insightful panel discussion in the David De Simone Performance Hall. Guests then enjoyed a delicious traditional lunch that brought community and culture together.

SUMMER OF LISTENING & ACTION

branch of the Holland River was the primary reason for the establishment of the community which became known as Newmarket.

In 1801 two early settlers, Joseph Hill and James Kinsey, constructed a dam on the river to harness its water power and construct a mill. Mills were essential in those days to grind wheat into flour and to saw timber. Hill also erected a general store and a residence nearby.

This development spurred the establishment of many other businesses, taverns and other buildings, which would evolve into Main Street. A market square, town hall, post o ce, bank, along with several churches that were some of the structures erected in the new small hamlet. In 1858 a second mill was erected on the river between Water & Timoty Streets. The original mill and wooden bridge were demolished by fire in 1871 but quickly replaced.

Fairy Lake was historically referred to simply as “The Pond”. It wasn’t until the early twentieth century, with the increasing popularity of the picture post card, that the affectionate name “Fairy Lake” was used by photographers to depict this picturesque pond.

The name Fairy Lake is what the pond is still known as today. It remains a focal point of the town and is used for many community events.

The old water works and power house buildings around the dam pictured in this photograph, housed Newmarket Hydro for some time. Eventually it became a restaurant and today, although vacant, has plans to soon be opened again as a restaurant venue.

The Town of East Gwillimbury brought neighbours together for a delicious Enhance EG Yonge Street Revitalization Community BBQ, hosted by project contractor Trisan Construction. On July 30th, from 5pm to 8pm, Anchor Park (88 Doane Road) was buzzing as residents enjoyed great food, met the project team, and learned more about the exciting changes coming to Yonge Street. Team members were on hand to answer questions and share updates, making it a perfect blend of good eats and community connection. Want to know more about the Yonge Street Revitalization or other exciting town projects? Visit eastgwillimbury.ca/EnhanceEG.

On August 13th, MPP Dawn Gallagher-Murphy met with the team at Girls Inc. of York Region (GIYR) to congratulate them on receiving a $75,600 Capital grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). The grant, awarded this summer, is expected to have a positive impact on girls and female identifying youth throughout York Region by purchasing a passenger van that will ensure that transportation barriers.

"Meow! This is your fluffy girl speaking. Happy Birthday, Mom! Thank you for all the cuddles, treats, and belly rubs (well… sometimes). I may act independent, but you are truly my favourite human. Wishing you a day filled with joy, love, and maybe a nap or two—just like me. Love you forever, your little kitty,

Things were blooming at CHATS on July 24th as they hosted the Aurora Chamber of Commerce After 5 event on their gorgeous garden deck! It was an evening where business relationships didn’t just grow they blossomed. With fresh air, good vibes, and even better connections, it was the perfect setting to plant the seeds for future collaborations. CHATS really rose to the occasion!

End of Summer Brings New Beginnings for Young Moms at Rose of Sharon

As summer winds down and families prepare for back-to-school routines, Rose of Sharon is excited to welcome York Academy students and their children to a new year of learning. York Academy, operated in partnership with the York Catholic District School Board, is our onsite high school program that supports pregnant and parenting students in continuing their education. With free childminding, transportation assistance, and counselling supports, young moms are set up for success as they work toward their educational goals and brighter futures.

This season also brings fun community fundraisers to keep programs like York Academy thriving. All summer long, The George Brew House & Eatery in Newmarket has hosted the “Pink Your Drink” promotion, donating $1 from every Rose Spritz sold. The campaign has been such a success that it will continue until the end of September—giving community members another month to raise a glass in support of young moms.

Rose of Sharon is also thrilled to welcome a new partner, Jugo Juice at Stonehaven Centre in Newmarket. From September 7–13, $1 from every smoothie purchased will be donated to Rose of Sharon, blending healthy choices with community impact.

Every dollar raised helps fund free programs and services that empower over 300 young mothers in York Region each year. Together, we can ensure these young women and their children have the support they need to learn, grow, and thrive.

The Town of Aurora had an absolutely rocking night on July 30th! Thanks to No Sugar Tonight: Tribute to The Guess Who, Burton Cummings & BTO Town Park was alive with the sound of iconic Canadian classics, and the crowd was loving every note. Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

This month we are honouring a flashback Champion of the Month –a company that was a timely and much-needed support for Abuse Hurts every Christmas season for 7 years. All-Lift Ltd. are material handling experts serving Toronto, Ontario and beyond since 1976. We were so fortunate to have them reach out to us in 2016 with a commitment to donate items towards our Christmas toy drive and they continued to do so until 2022. Each year, they chose an appropriate item for children and donated anywhere from 80 to 110 of a specific item each Christmas. The first year, they donated 80 full size red wagons. One year we received 100 baseball bats. We received soccer balls, skateboards, scooters, tricycles and even a generous cash donation one year when their toy plans fell through.

All-Lift CEO, Greg Bennett, and brother (All-Lift Managing Partner), Jeff Bennett, personally delivered the items to our warehouse locations each year. They were fully invested in the initiatives and were as excited as we were every year when they contacted us to announce what item they decided to donate and deliver.

We’re forever grateful to the Bennett brothers and All-Lift Ltd for going that extra mile to bring light to dark places and give struggling children a lot of hope and the opportunity to have happy childhood moments that helped carry them through the tougher times. We love and appreciate their selfless generosity and carry those great memories with us too. Thanks, All-Lift Ltd!
