The Neighbour Media Team

@neighbourmedia @neighbouraurora @neighboureastgwillimbury @neighbournewmarket www.neighbourmedia.ca

As Neighbour Media celebrates three incredible years in business, we can’t help but reflect on how lucky we are to have a growing and passionate team by our side. Lynnette, Myles and Elisa have enjoyed the journey thus far, working together in collaboration to build their business into the recognizable brand that it is today. Nurturing relationships and engaging with community partners along the way. This year, we are thrilled to o cially welcome Tricia to our team, bringing her talent, energy, and dedication to our mission of storytelling and community connection. Alongside her, we’ve had the pleasure of working with Chris, our intern, who has been eager to learn and contribute, Maggie, a dedicated volunteer who has generously shared her time and skills, and Lucas, our co-op student, whose enthusiasm and fresh perspective have been invaluable.

Having a strong, supportive team makes all the difference, and we are incredibly grateful for the hard work, creativity, and heart that each of these individuals has brought to Neighbour Media Their contributions have helped us grow, evolve, and continue doing what we love— highlighting the amazing people, businesses, and organizations that make our neighbourhoods so special. As we step into year four, we are excited for what’s ahead and look forward to building even more connections, telling more impactful stories, and continuing to grow as a team. Here’s to the future and the incredible people who make it all possible!

Hi Neighbours,

Welcome to the April edition of The Neighbour Paper! This month, Neighbour Media is thrilled to be celebrating another year of storytelling, connection, and marking our third anniversary in business! We are incredibly grateful for the unwavering support from our community partners and neighbours. Your encouragement fuels our passion, and we wouldn’t be here without you!

As we step into year four, we’re excited for the opportunities ahead and look forward to continuing this journey together. Here’s to another year of growth, collaboration, and sharing the incredible stories that make our neighbourhood shine!

Besides our birthday - here are a few other things to celebrate this month:

The month of April is World Autism Awareness , an annual opportunity for a dedicated conversation about autism spectrum disorder. 2nd is World Autism Day.

, also called Pesach, is a major Jewish holiday and one of the Three Pilgrimage Festivals. It celebrates the Exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. Passover 2025 begins at sundown on April 12th, and ends the evening of April 20th.

National Canadian Film Day is April 16th! A massive, one-day, coast-to-coast-to-coast celebration of Canadian cinema. Launched in 2014, CanFilmDay has brought together hundreds of thousands of Canadians to celebrate our stories and the incredible achievements of our filmmakers.

Good Friday (aka Holy Friday) is a statutory holiday and falls on April 18th, followed by Easter Sunday on April 20th, and Easter Monday on April 21st. Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary. Easter, also called Pascha or Resurrection Sunday, is a Christian festival and cultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead.

April also marks Earth Month, with Earth Day falling on April 22nd. A time to raise environmental awareness and create consciousness around the issues that affect mother nature during this time of crisis.

Each month the Neighbour Paper will make you smile! If you have something you’d like to share or would like help promoting, please email llanning@neighbourmedia.ca

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

Abuse Hurts is happy to name Drew Zeran as its Champion of the Month for April! Drew is married to Susan Zeran, our warehouse coordinator, and likes to keep the spotlight off himself.

Drew volunteers because he really enjoys giving back to the community by doing small, background things and he does not like to be the centre of attention.

We think he’s wrong about the ‘small things’ he does for Abuse Hurts because we see them as big things. Drew has helped out countless times and at all hours. When it’s time to roll up our sleeves at the warehouse because a truckload of toys is being delivered on a Saturday evening, Drew is there. If we have 12 full skids of donated personal hygiene products to sort, unpack, organize and place, Drew is there. If we have 300+ filled purses to unload, Drew is there.

He also volunteers for Youth Assisting Youth. He is a real "stand up guy". Solid. Reliable. He will always be there if someone needs him to do something. He is very unselfish and happy to help out. We congratulate whoever his neighbours are because, frankly, we think they hit the jackpot with Drew (and Sue). He is definitely a ‘great neighbour’ to Abuse Hurts! Drew never expects anything in return. No attention, a rmation, acknowledgement, pats on the back… but we just wanted all of York Region to know because he helps a lot of people behind the scenes. Thanks, Drew!

On March 1st, Central York Fire Services, the Ontario Provincial Police, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, York Region Paramedic Services, York Regional Police, and various community groups, celebrated International Women’s Day. The INSPIRE event aimed to ignite interest in the next generation of female first responders by providing students and community members with the opportunity to engage with women currently working in emergency services and learn from their stories and experiences. Attendees took part in hands-on activities, including using firefighting equipment, learning about CPR, and testing their skills with a police mannequin drag. The event commenced with inspiring words from Lorianne Zwicker, the new Deputy Chief for Central York Fire Services and the first female member to achieve this rank. This marked the fourth year of the event, which continues to grow annually with new partners and displays.

5 Tips to Keep Seniors Safe Online

The internet offers many ways to stay connected with loved ones, but it’s important to navigate it safely. Here are five tips to protect your personal information online.

Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Create complex passwords with a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using easily guessed details like birthdays. Use a password manager to track them securely, and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever possible for added protection.

Be Cautious with Personal Information

Avoid oversharing personal details online, especially on social media. Adjust your privacy settings to control who sees your posts and personal info.

Recognize Phishing Scams

Look out for phishing emails asking for personal information. These messages may have spelling errors or generic greetings. Always double-check the sender’s email and avoid clicking on links in suspicious messages. If in doubt, consult with someone you trust before acting.

Use Trusted Websites

Only shop or bank on secure, reputable websites. Look for "https://" in the URL and a padlock symbol to ensure the site is secure.

Monitor Financial Statements

Regularly check your bank and credit card statements for unauthorized transactions. Early detection helps prevent issues. If you spot anything unusual, contact your bank immediately.

A Message from MP Leah Taylor Roy

Dear Neighbours,

I am Leah Taylor Roy, your current Member of Parliament for Aurora- Oak Ridges- Richmond Hill. With recent changes to the federal voting districts, some of you may now find yourselves in our riding for the first time.

The new area to be added to the riding was formerly part of the Newmarket-Aurora riding, represented by MP Tony Van Bynen. The boundaries of the part of Aurora that is moving to the riding of Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill are Wellington St. on the south to the town line with Newmarket (just north of St. John’s side road) on the north between Yonge Street on the east and Bathurst Street on the west. The north-east quadrant of Aurora will remain part of the Newmarket-Aurora riding. Please refer to the map on this page to confirm which riding you are in, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions or need assistance.

I am running for re-election as part of Team Carney in the reconfigured riding of Aurora-Oak Ridges-Richmond Hill. If re-elected I look forward to continuing to serve the current constituents of Aurora-Oak Ridges -Richmond Hill as well as the residents of this new area. Thank you for your trust and support and I look forward to representing everyone in the new riding, in Ottawa, after the next election.

Warm regards,

Leah Taylor Roy Member of Parliament for Aurora- Oak Ridges- Richmond Hill

Empowered Women Empower the World! The IWD Lunch & March was a powerful celebration of strength, equality, and progress, uniting our community in a shared vision of empowerment. With MP Leah Taylor Roy delivering an inspiring keynote on women’s leadership and resilience, the room was filled with hope, determination, and the unwavering belief that when women rise, we all rise! Here’s to lifting each other up, breaking barriers, and creating a future where every woman thrives!

The Government of Canada announced funding for skills development at the Blue Door Construct building in Aurora, on March 3rd. The Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, Steven MacKinnon, joined by local MP Leah Taylor Roy and MP Tony Van Bynen, were in Aurora to highlight a funding announcement of a 1.1 million federal investment in Blue Door's Construct program — an eight-week pre-apprenticeship trades course that helps people break out of a cycle of poverty.

"April showers bring muddy paws… and I regret nothing!"

Pepper

Hi, I'm Pepper! I'm a 90lb Bouvier/Poodle mix, and I have SO much energy! I love to swim, run around, and explore everywhere I can. My human brothers have a trampoline, and I just have to get in on the action – usually, that makes my little fur brother want to join the fun too! might be big, but I still think I'm a lap dog – nothing beats snuggling up with my humans. If you stop petting me though - I’ll gently paw you, just to remind you that definitely need some more love and attention!

Hi, my name is Cody. I’m a 3 year old Wheaten Terrier. I love to give kisses - usually whether you want them or not. I just get so excited and happy to see people. I love to play with my humans and my big fur sister Pepper. I’m not a great swimmer, but when my big sister goes in the water, I seem to forget that and want to join her. I love my humans and I always try to get as close to them as possible - besides, they don’t need personal space. I know they love to cuddle as much as I do!

Remi

I'm Remi - a purebred Great Dane! Although I may look scary, I just wanna be friends with everyone. I start my day off with a big bowl of food, ice water, and a nap until my favourite owner finally wakes up and plays a game of chase with me, and then we go on a walk! I don’t care much for the exercise, I just wanna sniff everything I possibly can to make sure the neighbourhood is safe. After that my owner’s off to work and I guard the house closely, to make sure the neighbourhood kids or sneaky mail lady can't break in! Once she is finally home, I take her to the kitchen to remind her of my evening carrot.

Chester

Hi, my name's Chester and I cannot wait for spring! I'm a 5-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, and am such a great family dog. If you're looking for a great protector, keep looking - my breed are the biggest chickens! I just wanna be loved and snuggle. My favorite thing in the world is being a boat dog in the summer. I love riding around the lakes in our boat called "Ru n it". I love standing at the front of the boat and just letting my ears blow in the wind, I almost feel like I could fly! Every good boat ride is finished off with a fun swim in the lake. How could life get any better?

Molly

My name's Molly! I was rescued from a puppy mill, which is about the saddest life any animal could live in. You're confined to small stalls and forced to breed puppies. Luckily, when I was five years old, I got adopted by a nice man. Now my brother puppy Gibby and I live in this great house where we're treated like kings and queens! Everyone always wants a purebred, but I think I have proven that you can be extremely lucky getting a rescue. Although being part Shih Tzu and part Yorkie doesn't normally make you a swimmer, I absolutely love swimming in the lake. I also love boat rides and walks on the beach!

Athena

I’m Athena - a purebred Bouvier with a gentle spirit and a big heart! My favourite way to start the day is with an early morning walk, followed by a game of Frisbee with Dad. Thursdays are extra special because I get to go to work with him—he’s an RMT, and I nap under the massage table. After each appointment, I make sure to escort his clients to the treats drawer… I deserve a little payment too! The rest of the week, I take my job as the household guardian very seriously, keeping watch from the window. There are so many squirrels I’d love to chase, but I patiently wait for my evening walk with Dad—that’s when the real fun begins!

Making the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake a TEAM SPORT

Participating in the Nature’s Emporium Run for Southlake is good for your health and the community, but did you know that it can also be good for your workplace?

The Cancer Centre Cruisers are a team of dedicated physicians, nurses and staff from Southlake Health’s Regional Cancer Centre, celebrating 10 years of participating and fundraising in 2025.

We asked Katie, the team’s co-captain, how participating as a team helps to create positive workplace culture.

What makes doing the event together as a team more fun versus doing it alone?

When we run together, we’re not focused on individual goals — we’re crossing the finish line together. It gives everyone a sense of accomplishment and pride, and makes fundraising less daunting and more rewarding.

How has doing this as a team brought everyone together?

The NE Run for Southlake has been an incredible way to bring everyone together, creating a sense of unity and shared purpose. For new team members, it’s been a great way to integrate them into the culture of our workplace, and gives everyone an opportunity to connect in a more personal way.

Any tips or tricks for others who have a team or want to start one?

Get enthusiastic and lead by example! The energy you bring to the team is contagious. Get excited about why you’re fundraising and share that enthusiasm with your teammates. Find creative ways to motivate and engage your teammates, and set a clear, specific goal for your fundraising efforts that everyone can get behind and support.

Your Common Sense Conservative Canditate for Newmarket-Aurora

Dear Neighbour,

You’ve felt it. We all have. Canada has changed.

You see it at the grocery store, in your heating bill, at the gas pump. Everything is more expensive and taxes keep going up. You hear it in the headlines—stolen cars, violent offenders walking free. You feel it when you realize that home ownership, once an achievable dream, is slipping away. You see the USA threatening and pressuring Canada.

It’s the Canada that Mark Carney, as Justin Trudeau’s top economic advisor, has helped create.

The policies that the Liberal government forced on Canadians over the last 10 years have hurt families, hurt businesses, and hurt you.

That’s why they don’t deserve your vote.

The Carney-Trudeau Liberals now speak as if they have forgotten the last 10 years and so we must ask, how can we trust them to fix the issues they created if they are blind to them?

That’s why I’m running. To fight for you—to bring back common sense, safer streets, lower taxes, and a government that listens.

I’m Sandra Cobena. My family started with almost nothing, yet we worked hard and built a life in Newmarket-Aurora. My parents worked multiple jobs to buy our first home. But today, that same dream is out of reach for too many. The promise of Canada is fading.

I’m a mother of three, a wife, and a finance professional who has seen first-hand the struggles families face. And I refuse to accept that this is the best we can do.

Do you remember the Canada where:

• Your kids could play outside without worry?

• Seniors could retire with dignity?

• Grocery shopping wasn’t stressful?

• Criminals were held accountable?

• Small businesses thrived?

• Young people could afford a home of their own?

• Canada was respected around the world?

That’s the Canada we grew up in. And it’s the Canada I want to fight to bring back—with Pierre Poilievre and the Conservative Party.

Our plan is simple:

Put Canada First for a Change

Canada will be our priority in every decision.

Axe the Taxes

Lower costs on everything from groceries to gas.

Cut the GST on new homes under $1.3 million for up to $65,000 in savings.

Cut income taxes for annual tax savings of $900 for the average individual and $1,800 for a dual-income family.

Build the Homes

Reward municipalities that get homes built that are right for them, not bureaucracies that get in the way.

Bring back apprenticeships grants and fund tradeschools.

Fix the Budget

Stop reckless spending. Every dollar spent must be matched by a dollar saved.

Stop the Crime

End Trudeau’s catch-and-release policies and keep repeat offenders off our streets.

This is a common-sense plan. A plan that works for you.

The Liberals have had a decade. And now they’re plagiarizing our platform in desperation, not because they believe in the ideas, but because they are desperate for power. But don’t be fooled. They caused the cost-of-living crisis. They caused the crime crisis. The drug crisis. The housing crisis. And now they want a fourth term.

They don’t deserve your vote. Because Canada deserves better.

With your trust, we will go from being a nation of tax collectors and tollmasters, of bureaucrats and busybodies, of gatekeepers and grandees, of rulers and rule makers. Instead, we will be a nation of explorers and entrepreneurs, of adventurers and artists, of workers and warriors, of patriots and hardworking fellow citizens.

We are going to restore the promise of Canada that anyone from anywhere can achieve anything. That hard work gets you a great life in a beautiful house, on a safe street, wrapped in the protective arms of solid borders and brave troops serving under a proud flag.

The next election is our chance to bring back the Canada we love.

I’m humbly asking for your vote —to restore a safe, affordable, and family-first country.

Let’s build a future we’ll be proud to leave to our children. Let’s bring it home.

PS I would love to hear from you on issues that are important to you and feedback on our efforts. You can share your thoughts at the QR Code.

Supplies for Homeless Folks

Routes Connecting Communities, launched an initiative that provides essential supplies to homeless individuals, including tents, hygiene products, seasonal gear, inflatable mattresses, first aid kits, clothing, and more. This effort is vital in addressing the basic needs of homeless people, supporting their survival, health, and overall well-being.

Many individuals experiencing homelessness lack access to food, clean clothing, hygiene products, and shelter—basic necessities that are crucial for maintaining health and safety. By offering items like clean clothing and hygiene products, we help improve self-esteem and empower individuals to reintegrate into society, whether by attending job interviews or accessing necessary services.

Providing these supplies is not just about addressing physical needs— it’s also about showing empathy, compassion, and recognizing the inherent dignity of every person, regardless of their circumstances. These items serve as a reminder that they are not forgotten. Moreover, they help reduce the immense stress that comes from lacking basic resources, offering comfort and stability during di cult times.

By restoring these essentials, we offer more than just survival; we offer hope, dignity, and a sense of belonging. This initiative helps homeless individuals feel seen and supported, encouraging them to rebuild their lives with the tools they need. Together, we can make a difference. If you or someone you know is experiencing homelessness, Routes Connecting Communities is here to help and provide support during challenging times. If you are interested in learning more and or supporting this initiative, please reach out to brooklyn@routescc.org.

Here are four ways to help care for wildlife:

1.Keep your distance from wild animals and their habitats and make sure your pets do too!

2.Find a baby animal without a mom? Never touch wildlife or intervene. Animals often come back for their babies where they last left them.

The Roman Catholics in Newmarket

St. John’s Parish (for Newmarket and area) was opened as a mission in 1841. In 1838 the idea of erecting a Roman Catholic Church in Newmarket was raised, however, the small population didn’t warrant it. Prior to the potato famine in Ireland of 1847, Newmarket had a very small population of Roman Catholics. The issue was raised the following year, with new immigration, and the decision was made to build a Roman Catholic Church in Newmarket. The first church was erected on the north side of Ontario Street (just west of Main Street) in 1841. A graveyard was established immediately east of it (remains of the entrance way to this cemetery still exist). It wasn’t long before Newmarket’s first separate school was established in the church basement. The congregation soon outgrew the small church building. A new cemetery, also christened St. John’s) was established north of town on Main Street North (still in operation at 250 Main St. North.)

In1874 a new church, “St. John Chrysostom Church” was erected (pictured). It was built immediately west of the original church. In 1882 a new separate school building was erected – St. John’s school. By the 1970s the old church could no longer support the needs of the large Newmarket Roman Catholic congregation and in 1977 the old church was torn down. A new church was constructed on the south side of Ontario Street which still stands today. Less than ten years after it first opened its doors, however, the new St. John’s could not accommodate the growing population of Catholics in Newmarket and area, so plans for St. Elizabeth Seton Parish (on Leslie Street) began in the fall of 1986 under Father Matthew Robbertz. On November 24, 1991, the congregation of St. Elizabeth Seton proudly participated in the Solemn Blessing and Mass of Dedication of their new church.

The Central York Chamber of Commerce hosted the 2025 Mayor's Luncheon at Old Town Hall on March 5th. Mayor John Taylor led an impactful discussion on some of the most pressing issues facing Canadians today—the local economy, tariffs, taxes, and housing—shedding light on both challenges and opportunities ahead. A key takeaway? The renewed importance of supporting local businesses and working together to strengthen our community. A heartfelt thank you to all attendees, businesses, sponsors, and to Mayor John Taylor for sharing such valuable insights. Looking forward to another inspiring event next year!

Letter from MAYOR TAYLOR

We get through tough times together.

As I write this, President Trump is once again threatening to impose tariffs in his ever-changing trade war on Canada.

I've heard from many people about the anxiety and uncertainty this creates in our community. People are concerned about their jobs, their businesses, and the broader economic impact – and rightfully so. I am also seeing a determination to weather these attacks on our economy and way of life. Canadians have always stood up for themselves and this moment is no exception.

At the Town of Newmarket, we have been taking proactive steps to prioritize Canadian goods and services in the supplies we purchase in response to U.S. tariffs. Measures include updating our procurement bylaw to allow us to prioritize Canadian suppliers, partnering with the Region and business organizations like the Chamber of Commerce and BIA, as well as reintroducing the Business Assistance Concierge program that we first launched during COVID. This program helps Newmarket businesses navigate challenging times. As the trade landscape continues to evolve, we are adapting to ensure the resilience of our local economy.

It is inspiring to see residents using their purchasing power to help sustain Canadian industry, local jobs, and businesses. Keep it up. It will take our collective effort to push back against the effects of these tariffs. We need to take a similar approach to what we did coming out of lockdown – shop local and support Canadian businesses whenever possible.

There is no doubt that tough days lie ahead but standing together we will get through them and emerge even stronger.

P.S. Happy Anniversary to Neighbour Media! It’s hard to believe this magazine is only a few years old. Keep up the great work!

On April 28th, Canadians will vote in the most consequential election of our lives.

We need experienced leadership to take us through the tariff crisis and threats to our sovereignty. We also need leadership that actually understands how to build the strongest economy in the G7.

Now more than ever, we need a Prime Minister and a government that will fight for Canada, protect our values, strengthen our economy, and never back down to Donald Trump.

As your Liberal candidate for Newmarket-Aurora, I am excited to be running under the strong and steady leadership of Mark Carney. In this election, Carney is the only choice that has the experience, the leadership ability, and the vision to deliver on Canada’s full economic potential.

As the former Governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, he has navigated two of the world’s leading economies through periods of crisis and significant global uncertainty. He has the academic foundation to complement his real-world expertise – equipping him with the knowledge and insight to address today’s complex challenges, while positioning Canada for long-term prosperity.

Canada is at cross-roads. We face tremendous challenges but let us recognize that challenges bring opportunities. I believe the emergent threats we face today require accelerated action. We need to be ambitious and bold while recognizing that compassion is part of the Canadian identity. Compassion for our citizens and compassion for our environment.

Let’s keep Canada strong and free. Vote with me for Canada Strong.

Get to Know your Neighbours

What is your favourite beverage?

My go-to drink is Diet Coke; I think it's a part of my personality at this point. I can absolutely tell the difference between a canned, bottled, and fountain Diet Coke. It's best in a glass with ice and a lime!

Netflix or a night out?

I can't and won't choose! I like to get the best of both worlds - a nice dinner out and home in time to catch an episode of a good series. I just finished Adolescence on the weekend.

What does being a good neighbour mean to you?

It means participating in the ecosystem that is your community. I love seeing people putting each other's bins back, shoveling driveways, checking in if you haven't seen them around, noticing new babies and pets. It's the little things that are the big things.

How It Works:

It’s simple and effective: You tell us exactly who you want to reach-age, gender, location, interests-and we create a custom audience on the backend of META tailored to your customer avatar. From there, we craft storytelling-driven advertisements that resonate with your target audience. Finally, we deliver the ads to their audience on Facebook and Instagram through our trusted local pages, driving click-throughs to your website, landing page, event page, or wherever you need them to go.

Neuro-Recovery and Wellness Centre

Walk It Off was inspired from a tragedy that founders, Heather Cairns-Mills and Kevin Mills experienced in 2009 when Kevin suffered a Spinal Cord Injury. At Walk it Off, we have a very talented team of caring and dedicated multi-disciplinary professionals who come to work every day excited to work with you. We’re a teaching facility dedicated to guiding students in the health and therapeutic disciplines, eager to support and equip our aspiring professionals for the future.

Our Activity-Based-Therapy program is designed for those living with neuro-related conditions. The focus of our program is on stimulating a response in the paralyzed or weakened areas of the body. We use exercise interventions including core strengthening, gait training and high repetition, load bearing tasks. During sessions, your therapist will assist you through exercises facilitating motion in all parts of the body all while being out of your wheelchair. We tailor our programs to each individual client – because everyone is unique!

Services Provided: Physiotherapy, Activity Based Therapy (for Neurological Conditions), Exercise and Health Maintenance Programs, Manual Osteopathy, Adaptive Fitness Programs, Physiotherapy and Activity Based Therapy (ABT)

Walk It Off is a not-for-profit organization which relies on the generosity of our community to support our members and allow us to continue growing our program. Visit our website to donate to the recovery journeys of our clients!
