NEIGHBOUR COVER STORY

@neighbourmedia @neighbouraurora @neighboureastgwillimbury @neighbournewmarket www.neighbourmedia.ca

For more than five decades, Omars Shoes has been a cornerstone in Aurora – a family-run business that has grown through three generations of passion, perseverance, and deep community ties. They have always believed in supporting and giving back to the community that they are a part of. This May, the Khamissa family is not only marking 55 years in business, but doing so with purpose, heart, and a whole lot of style.

Led by Raz and Mae Khamissa, alongside their daughter Saarah, Omars is celebrating its milestone anniversary with Fashion Thru the Ages, a runway event set for May 20 at the Royal Venetian Mansion. But this isn’t just a fashion show—it’s a fundraiser in support of Southlake Health, with a special focus on Men’s Health, a cause that has become deeply personal. Last year, Raz was diagnosed with prostate cancer. It came as a shock, and at first, the family kept quiet. But after a healing trip to South Africa and time to reflect, Raz realized the importance of speaking out.

“So many men don’t get checked,” he says. “If we can create awareness, get people talking, and encourage even one person to look after their health, then that’s worth it.”

Welcome to May! A big thank you to our amazing community partners and neighbours for contributing n— we're excited to share it

Here are some things worth celebrating this month:

Mental Health Awareness Month, which was started in the United States in 1949 by Mental Health America. During this month, Canadians are encouraged to learn about mental illnesses and how they affect people's lives in different ways.

wanted to take a moment to thank you for all the incredible support you’ve provided to the East Gwillimbury community throughout the year. Your partnership has been such a blessing, and we deeply appreciate the way you’ve shown up and beautifully captured the growth of our community through your lens. It truly means a lot to me and reminds me of how lucky I am to have such amazing people to work with. - Brittny Stevenson-Byers, Town of EG Economic Development Officer

Each month the Neighbour Paper will make you smile! If you have something you’d like to share or would like help promoting, please email llanning@neighbourmedia.ca

Mae, who originally envisioned the event as a celebration of community mental health, was quick to support the shift in focus. “Raz wasn’t sure at first, but after the trip, he saw how important it was. Men don’t always talk about these things—we wanted to change that.”

The evening will showcase men’s fashion found at Omars, modelled by familiar faces including Aurora Mayor Tom Mrakas and King Mayor Steve Pellegrini, with live music by Soul Benefit to keep the energy high.

Now joined by daughter Saarah in the business, the Khamissas are feeling the love. “The support has been incredible,” says Saarah. “It’s a reflection of the relationship we’ve built with this community.”

Mae adds, “It feels like the whole town is wrapping us in a warm blanket. We’ve always been proud to serve Aurora—but this event is a celebration of how proud we are to belong here.” #GoodNeighbours

Neighbour Media was honoured to once again be a judge at the Optimist Club’s Annual Oratorical Contest! Now in our fourth year of supporting this incredible event, we were blown away by the talent and passion of the amazing youth who took the stage. From ages 8 to 18, these inspiring young speakers delivered powerful messages, showcasing confidence, creativity, and courage as they shared their thoughts on this year’s topic. This contest not only builds public speaking skills, but also offers students the chance to win cash prizes and scholarships—a true celebration of potential and purpose! We left feeling inspired and optimistic about the future thanks to these brilliant young minds. A heartfelt thank you to the Newmarket, Aurora, and Keswick Optimist Clubs for your continued commitment to empowering youth in our community.

A Sweet Night for a Great Cause! On April 5th, Grace Church in Newmarket hosted a heartwarming fundraiser to help sponsor a family from Türkiye. The evening was filled with delicious food, lively music, dancing, and the highlight of the night—an amazing live and silent dessert auction that satisfied every sweet tooth! It was truly a sweet success and a shining example of how our community comes together to make a difference. A big thank you to Jackie Playter and all the individuals that came out to support this fundraiser.

Happy Mother Day

MPP Caroline Mulroney recently presented Rabbi Yossi Vorovitch, Paul Connors, Laurie Carriere, Caroline, Annabel Slaight, Sharon Bates, and Jody Mott with a King Charles III Coronation Medal, on April 24th. “These six individuals don’t just serve their communities. They shape them. They remind us of what’s possible when care and commitment meet courage. Each of them has built something lasting—whether through advocacy, creativity, compassion, or quiet determination—and our communities are stronger because of it.” - MPP Mulroney

Happy One Year Anniversary to What a Bagel EG. On April 2nd, they celebrated in the tastiest way possible—by giving away 4 FREE bagels to everyone who stopped by! And of course, we couldn’t resist the smell of those freshly baked bagels, so we popped in to say Happy Anniversary and treat ourselves to a bagel with a smear! Here’s to many more years of deliciousness and community vibes at What a Bagel EG!

The Town of EG honoured Earth Day on April 22nd with a flag raising ceremony at the Civic Centre. Earth Day is a time to promote awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment, sustainable living and demonstrate support for environmental protection. This Earth Day, environmentalists all over the world recycled, conserved energy and taught the importance of energy conservation! Earth Day’s 2025 theme was OUR POWER, OUR PLANET, calling for everyone to unite around renewable energy so we can triple clean electricity by 2030.

A MESSAGE FROM MPP DAWN GALLAGHER MURPHY

Partner:

As we welcome the month of May, I want to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the incredible mothers and mother figures in our lives. Whether biological, adoptive, or chosen, mothers are truly the heart of our families and communities. Their strength, compassion, and unwavering support shape generations. This Mother's Day, let’s show our appreciation with love and gratitude for all that they do.

As your MPP, I remain focused on improving access to the affordable goods and services families rely on. That’s why I’m proud of our government’s ongoing efforts to remove trade barriers between provinces—work that will help lower prices, support businesses, and strengthen our local economy. We’re building a more connected and competitive Ontario, where opportunity can flow freely across provincial borders.

I’m also excited to invite you to my second annual Seniors Expo, happening on Friday, June 6, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Newmarket Community Centre (200 Doug Duncan Drive). This free event brings together local service providers, programs, and resources dedicated to the wellbeing of older adults. Join us for a knowledge exchange featuring engaging speakers, valuable insights, and, of course, a visit to the complimentary tea room! It’s a great way to connect, learn, and celebrate our seniors—especially during Ontario’s very first o cially proclaimed Seniors Month Looking forward to seeing you there!

MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy presented Brian J. Patterson with the King Charles III Coronation Medal — a well-deserved recognition for his lifetime of service to our province and his tireless advocacy for public safety. As President and CEO of the Ontario Safety League for over two decades, Brian has made an extraordinary impact through partnerships with law enforcement, transportation agencies, and community groups. He’s a respected voice for the vulnerable, a passionate volunteer, and a steadfast leader who continues to serve even in retirement. Whether advancing commercial driver safety or supporting veterans through the Last Post Fund, Brian has always led with compassion and integrity. Congratulations, Brian, and thank you for everything you’ve done — and continue to do — to keep our communities safe.

On April 24th, MPP Caroline Mulroney and MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy were at Blue Door’s Aurora location to hear about the impact of two grants, totalling $400,000 from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF). In 2023, Blue Door received a $200,000 Resilient Communities Fund grant to help it navigate the challenges created by the pandemic, and then last year, Blue Door got the good news about a $200,000 Capital grant to help support four emergency housing units at Kevin’s Place, a youth emergency housing program that helps 200+ young people annually.

NEIGHBOURHOOD PETS

"Behind every good boy is a great dog mom. Happy Mother’s Day!" - Stoli

Molly

Hi! My name is Molly and I recently celebrated my 14th birthday. I love pizza, cheeseburgers and long walks in the woods. My pawrents love me very much and are grateful for every day that they have with me! I’m an amazing companion!!! My nicknames are Miss Molly, Mozie, and our neighbours call me the Mayor of our street.

Praline

PRALINE REPORTING FOR DUTY. Hi, I’m Praline— big cat energy in a mini-Aussiedoodle bod. Don’t be fooled by the fluff, I run this house like a feline queen. My favourite game? Fetch. But plot twist: they fetch the scrunchie for me. When I’m not zooming around the house or dramatically watching the TV, I’m either scheming my next snack… or insisting on peeing precisely on the edge of the curb.

Moxy

They call me Moxy, and boy, do I live up to the name! I've got spunk, pep, and energy that just can't be contained. Take laundry day, for example. Every time those humans move clothes from the washing machine to the dryer, I go into full-on protect-the-house mode! I bark and bark like there's some kind of wet sock monster attacking! No task is too boring for me; I turn it into a real action-packed adventure. With all this wild enthusiasm and my fearless spirit, I'm definitely a force to be reckoned with!

The Floof Pack: Romeo, Tinkerbell & Daisy

Okay.. there is no denying that we are the sweetest little furballs! Me, Tinkerbell, I’ve been told I’m a serious old soul and I give the best kisses. Daisy here! I may be the smallest, but I am definitely the mightiest. My pawrents say I’m the spiciest because I always keep the others in check. Hey, don’t forget about me, Romeo! I am a goofy boy. I keep my hoomans on their toes, and always have a lot to say!

Wally

Hi there! I’m Wally the Chihuahua. I may be small, but I have a BIG appetite—and an even bigger talent for getting treats. My strategy? A foolproof three-step method: sit pretty, activate puppy eyes, and throw in a polite little paw tap, just to make sure you *remember* I’m right here. But if that doesn’t work? I have a backup plan. Enter the drool—lots of it—until impressive spit bubbles form on both sides of my mouth. It’s not the most glamorous tactic, but hey, it gets results.

Freddie

They call me Freddie, and I'm basically the uno cial mascot of The North Dance Company! I'm a total goofball, and I love kids, treats, and rolling around in the snow. I'm named after the famous dancer Fred Astaire, and guess what? I can do a fantastic pirouette on command! Plus, my eyebrows are super expressive, so they say I'm made for the stage.

Letter from MAYOR TAYLOR

Getting ready for a fun-filled Summer

With Winter finally behind us, it’s time to get ready for a fun-filled Spring and Summer in Newmarket.

What better way to kick off the season than with some Spring cleaning?

Saturday, May 3 is the annual Community Clean-Up Day in Newmarket. For more than 40 years, residents have come out for the clean-up day and pitched in to tidy the parks and trails in their neighbourhood. This event has come a long way. I remember wading into the river the first year, of what was then called the Holland River Clean Up, fishing out old car tires and shopping carts. Today it is mostly tidying up litter blown around by Winter storms and covered by snow (and no wading into the river!).

Thanks to everyone who takes part each year. Check the town’s website for details on where you can pick up a clean-up kit.

Street sweepers have been cleaning up the winter debris from our roads for a couple of weeks now and soon these clouds of dust will be replaced with colorful flowers and plants popping up in garden beds and spilling out of baskets and barrels downtown.

There is so much to look forward to in the coming weeks with many summer traditions getting underway in May. Ontario's best Farmers’ Market returns to the Riverwalk Commons on May 3. Kids sports get underway, including the annual baseball parade on May 10. Patios will soon pop up at restaurants downtown and throughout Newmarket, the Pride and Canada Day festivals will be back, and we’ll soon announce the line up for the ever-popular Summer Music Series at the Riverwalk.

There are so many great reasons to get out and get together in Newmarket! I hope to see you in the coming weeks and months.

The Town of Newmarket proudly hosted the Youth Summit on April 8th, welcoming elementary and high school students back to the Municipal O ces for the first time since the pandemic! Students from grades 8 to 12 came together for an empowering day of breakout sessions, brainstorming, and real conversations about how to amplify youth voices in politics and local decision-making. This inspiring initiative began when a local student stepped forward with a bold idea—to create a space where youth could engage directly with the Mayor, share feedback on town services, and build their leadership skills. The result? A day full of ideas, energy, and future changemakers ready to make a difference.

The Newmarket Swans Club hosted a Swans information/social evening on April 14th from 7-9pm at the Newmarket Community Centre and Lions hall. The community was invited to learn more about the Swans club and the community work that they do. This month’s AWESOME grant went to the Huron Heights Secondary School Jazz Band—a talented group of students making waves at regional and national music festivals! Teacher Scott Cameron shared that the band brought home multiple gold awards in 2024, and with the help of the Awesome Grant, they’re gearing up for another shot at gold this May, alongside three other music groups (band and choir) from HHSS. We're rooting for them!

On April 21st, Elisa from the Neighbour Media team celebrated her 33rd birthday! She was showered with love from friends, and enjoyed a delicious dinner and cake with her family - the first birthday she has had with her son Grayson, which was very special for her! Cheers to many more birthdays to come.

The Royal Hotel

Dr. Orin Ford built the Royal Hotel, at the top of the Main Street hill, in 1852. Dr. Ford was a homeopathic doctor and opened his hotel as a sanitarium. This was quite a development in the small hamlet of Newmarket, given that homeopathic practices were not legal in the province of Canada West (Ontario) until 1859. Dr. Ford had his residence in the hotel and his daughter was the hotel operator. The Royal quickly became a popular public house. For awhile the National Telegraph O ce was located in the hotel. Following the Ford family, the hotel changed hands a few times in the latter part of the nineteenth century, with notable proprietors being Alexander McKinnon and Arthur Evans. Evans had purchased the hotel in 1887 but rented it out until 1901. At this time, he embarked on an ambitious series of renovations to make the Royal at the time the largest hotel in Newmarket. The dining room was enlarged, finished in oak, it could seat 70 persons. When you entered the main hall there was a gentlemen’s sitting room on one side and a lady’s sitting room on the other. The upstairs featured 30 comfortable, furnished bedrooms, fitted with hot water and electric lighting. The hotel contained both a barber and a butcher shop and the sheds out back could house over 100 horses. After making significant alterations and improvements to the hotel, he renamed it “The New Royal Hotel”.

Around 1886 a two-story brick addition was constructed adjacent and immediately north of the original structure. Sometime afterwards a third story was added and a new small balcony was erected from the third story.

The hotel also featured tennis courts to the rear of the building, following the era of horse and buggy where the area was used for stables. With the onset of prohibition, 1910-1911, the hotel was eventually converted to a hospital during WWI. Following the war, the O ce Specialty Mfg. Co. had their o ces in the Royal.

Today the old Royal hotel exists as a combination of retail and residential usage and is one of the oldest historic buildings in Newmarket.

Kelly Broome, Newmarket Ward 6 Councillor, along with the Soldra Team hosted a neighbourhood Easter Egg hunt at Dr. Margaret Arkinstall Park on April 19th. The community came out, searched for eggs hidden throughout the park, took pictures with the Easter Bunny and enjoyed a crafts table. It was a fun and festive day for the community to enjoy!

The moment guests stepped into The Armoury, they were transported to the charming streets of a Parisian market—complete with blooming flowers, fresh vegetables, and of course, plenty of baguettes. French-inspired servers floated through the crowd with elegant hors d’oeuvres, while a lively mime added a touch of whimsy to the evening. And that was just the beginning! Guests were then seated for the main event—a delightful Champagne tasting perfectly paired with delicious dishes and a few unexpected surprises that had everyone smiling. Bravo to CHATS for hosting such a memorable evening and for their continued dedication to supporting seniors in our community.

May Fun Fact

Every year there is a particular meteor shower in May called the Eta Aquariids meteor shower. Discovered in 1870, this meteor shower passes by Earth between April 19 and May 28. It’s easiest to view it from the equatorial regions of the world and can be glimpsed passing by just before dawn.

CAN YOU SOLVE THESE PENTAGON ARITHMAGONS?

The aim of an arithmagon is to work out which numbers go in the empty circles. The numbers in the square boxes are made by adding together the numbers in the circles either side. For example, if the number in the square box was 10 you could try 6 and 4, but the numbers must also add up on the other edges, making this more di cult than it first appears.

The internet offers amazing ways to stay connected with family and friends—whether it’s sharing memories, joining virtual events, or simply checking in. But it’s important to stay safe while doing so. These five simple tips can help protect your personal information and give you peace of mind online.

1. Use Strong, Unique Passwords

Create complex passwords using a mix of letters, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using personal information like birthdays. Use different passwords for each account and consider a password manager. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) whenever possible for extra protection.

2. Be Cautious with Personal Information

Think twice before sharing personal details online, especially on social media. Quizzes and games can collect sensitive data. Adjust privacy settings to limit who sees your content.

3. Recognize Phishing Scams

Watch for signs of phishing—such as unexpected messages, poor grammar, or urgent requests for personal info. Don’t click on suspicious links. If unsure, pause and check with someone you trust.

4. Use Trusted Websites

Only shop or bank online through secure websites. Look for "https://" and a padlock icon in your browser’s address bar.

5. Monitor Financial Statements

Regularly check your bank and credit card statements. Report any suspicious charges to your bank right away.

What is your favourite beverage?

Depends on the time of day, but my go-to is a strong coffee first thing to get my brain fired up, then I coast on water throughout the day, then black peppermint tea in the afternoon.

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

Well, I have 5 children ranging from age 3 to 23 and I’m an avid outdoorsman.

What is your favourite holiday to celebrate?

That’s a tough one because if you could see the way my wife decorates our house for Halloween and Christmas … I would say those two holidays are TIED!

Being a good neighbour means being considerate and respectful no matter your ability. It involves: Greeting and acknowledging your neighbour, lending a helping hand when needed and always advocating and supporting our most vulnerable community members.

Abuse Hurts Champion of the Month

Up until now, we have mostly featured fairly new supporters as Champions for the past couple of years, but this month we would love to honour another person who came on board quite a while ago - someone who has been a hero of support for Abuse Hurts since 2009: Steve Glover. Steve has recently retired from a successful career at Compugen Finance and has garnered us some wonderful support through Compugen Finance as well as their Green4Good initiative.

Because of Steve, Abuse Hurts has not only received financial support over the years, but they have also supplied us with technology, like laptops and tablets for the charity’s use and also for survivors. And yes, Steve has directly and personally supported us in many ways as well. Says Mr. Glover, “It has been my honour and our company's honour to be in a position to support Abuse Hurts (Canadian Centre for Abuse Awareness) over the past sixteen years. I would like to congratulate Ellen Campbell and her team for their dedication and support for those who have been abused. Of the various charities that our company, Compugen Finance, has supported over the years, Abuse Hurts is certainly one of our favorites. Keep up the great work.”

Steve, we at Abuse Hurts love you and appreciate you and your family. We wish you all the best in your retirement and wanted to make sure you knew how much of an impact you have made on Abuse Hurts and all the people we assist!

The 2nd Annual Women in Sport (W.I.N.S) Weekend took over Aurora on March 29th-30th, and it was nothing short of amazing!
