Something remarkable is blooming in Mount Albert. Lavender fields sway in the summer breeze, rescued animals roam freely, and handmade hearts dangle from trees. This is The Giving Place—a sanctuary born not from wealth or ease, but from heartbreak, hope, and a vision that refused to fade.
For founder Leanne, life’s unraveling became the beginning of everything. A newly divorced mother of three, pregnant and on early bed rest, she found herself stripped of stability. From that stillness, a dream emerged: to create a place where people could give and receive without pressure. A place rooted in purpose. That dream began with Touch a Heart, a grassroots charity that started with a call to Blue Door Shelter, and a simple Facebook post. Families transitioning out of shelters needed basic essentials—and the community responded in droves. Touch a Heart helped over a thousand families. But Leanne’s vision didn’t stop there. She began writing a book, and dreamed of a property—wild, peaceful, and filled with meaning.
Soon after creating a vision board with her dreams, Leanne’s book became an international bestseller, her charity had surpassed its goals, and then… she found the property. At first she just wanted to know what it would feel like to walk the land of something she might be able to afford one day. But it was sold, under offer, and out of reach… until a month later, when the deal fell through. “I packed up my baby, drove five hours from my grandma’s cottage, and walked around the pond. The land was wild, untouched… but I felt its energy. It felt like mine.” She was thankful for her visit, not expecting anything more. But that evening, the call came. The executor of the property made a promise to the previous owner, her best friend, who had passed away from cancer: only sell it to someone who sees its beauty and promises to make it beautiful again. Leanne was the only one who did. And just like that, her vision board became real life.
Today, The Giving Place spans 8.5 acres of untouched charm. Over 3,400 lavender plants bloom each summer. Bees pollinate wildflowers. Chickens, pigs, and other rescued animals roam happily. Events like A Night of 1000 Candles, Lavender Festival, and Farm-to-Fork Dinners now bring people together for connection, healing, and joy. There’s also a farm boutique filled with handcrafted items, all made with love, with proceeds supporting rescued animals and The Giving Garden Haven, which grows organic food for families in need.
But ask Leanne what the real heart of The Giving Place is, and she’ll say the people. “Everyone who visits here—whether to volunteer, attend an event, or just walk the land—says the same thing: ‘It feels different here.’ I believe it’s because this place was built from love. From community. From intention. And because people don’t just want to see something beautiful—they want to be part of it.”
Elliott McCormack is a young, dynamic individual with deep roots in the local community, bringing both energy and a strong sense of connection to his new role at Main Street Realty. Proceeds from the evening will directly contribute to Lindsay's mission, providing essential resources and support to communities in Cambodia. As we welcome the warmth and joy of July, I want to take a moment to wish everyone in Newmarket—Aurora a very happy and joyful Canada Day! Let us come together to celebrate the beauty, resilience, and unity of our great nation—the True North, strong and free!
This month, I’m proud to highlight two significant investments that will have a lasting impact in our community. First, our government is providing $6.89 million to York Region to help transition individuals out of encampments and into safe, stable housing. This funding supports projects such as the Inn From the Cold’s New Home on Yonge Street, the St. Mark’s Apartments, and the Gorham Street Community Housing Redevelopment, among others. With additional shelter space, transitional beds, and wraparound supports, these initiatives are helping restore dignity and stability for vulnerable residents.
Second, I was pleased to announce a $1.09 million investment to support the first year of operations for the York Region Mental Health Community Care Centre. This 24/7 facility will offer urgent, compassionate mental health and addiction support to individuals aged 12 and up—diverting people from emergency departments and connecting them to long-term care pathways.
Together, these investments show that our government is listening, responding, and taking action to build a stronger, more caring Ontario—one that supports its residents in times of need and celebrates every success. Wishing you all a safe and meaningful July!
MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy hosted her second annual Seniors’ Expo on June 6th, and it was a fantastic success! With over 300 attendees, the event was filled with meaningful conversations, valuable resources from a wide range of vendors, and insightful presentations from knowledgeable speakers. It was a day full of energy, connection, and empowerment for our vibrant senior community. Here's to celebrating and supporting seniors all year long!
MPP Dawn Gallagher Murphy took the opportunity to meet with representatives from the Social Enterprise for Canada (SEC) to hear how a six-month, $100,000 Seed grant from the provincial government’s Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) has been such a positive for the group’s work. The SEC has put the grant to work to help it strengthen its cybersecurity by addressing cyberthreat prevention, ensuring that it has uninterrupted and secure service provision.
Congratulations to Team EG and Mayor Hackson for winning the Southlake Foundation Mayor's Award Challenge for the Natures Emporium Run for Southlake! Team EG raised an incredible $38,151 for our local hospital. Thank you EG!
The East Gwillimbury Gardeners’ Annual Plant Sale was a blooming success! On May 24th, the East Gwillimbury Gardeners held their much-anticipated annual plant sale, and it did not disappoint! The Mount Albert Community Centre was bursting with vibrant plants and flowers suited for every type of garden, from sun-loving blooms to shady perennials. Knowledgeable volunteers were on hand to help attendees find the perfect additions for their gardens, making it a truly welcoming and community-driven event. A big thank-you to everyone who came out to support and celebrate local gardening!
It was a beautiful afternoon celebrating Jessica and her baby girl on the way! On May 31st, friends and family gathered outdoors for Jessica's Baby Shower where they enjoyed lunch, laughter, and great company. Even with the cool breeze, the joy and excitement for Baby Girl’s July arrival kept everyone warm and glowing. Here’s to the sweetest new chapter, and the little one who’s already so loved!
The Awesome Foundation trustee's met with teacher / child & youth worker Meaghan Lilley and Principal Erin Cranney of Maple Leaf Public School to award them with this months $1,000 donation. Meaghan explained that the $1000 will be used to purchase a brand new stove for the student resource room at Maple Leaf Public.
The stove is a much needed addition for the new 'Bake Lab'. This is a club to not only teach the students how to bake & follow recipes but will also feed the children of the school who are apart of the breakfast / snack program. They will be baking up things like mu ns and healthy baked goods to nourish the students. Healthy minds make for better learning! Do you have an AWESOME IDEA that supports youth in Newmarket? Apply for a Awesome Foundation grant at awesomefoundation.org/en/ chapters/newmarket-ontario
Non-perishable food donations will be collected for the Holland Landing Food Pantry.
National Public Works Week is all about shining a spotlight on the unsung heroes who keep our towns and cities running like a well-oiled machine, from smooth roads and clean water to forest conservation and emergency response! On May 24th, York Region celebrated in style with a Family Fun Day at the Public Works Operations Centre and Paramedic Services Building. It was a hands-on day filled with big trucks, cool demos, and lots of smiles all while showcasing the amazing behind-the-scenes services that keep our communities safe, clean, and connected. A big shoutout to the incredible public works pros who keep everything moving, we see you and appreciate you!

What an unforgettable night at the Community Living Central York Art Show! The community was invited to celebrate the incredible talent of the individuals supported by CLCY. Despite a surprise power outage, the room was bright with energy, connection, and creativity. More than an art show, it was a powerful display of self-expression, inclusion, and the magic that happens when we come together. The entire night was a beautiful reminder of what community is all about!
"July’s forecast: hot days, cool naps, and endless snacks."
- Stoli
Hi! I'm Julio and my furever Mom rescued me 2 years ago when I was 1.5 years old. Everything frightened me so much that I would hide under my mom's bed. Thanks to the daily love, patience, and trust I experience at home, my confidence has blossomed! We went on many walks, my appetite kicked in, and now I sleep IN the bed, under the sheets. When my mom brought me to Social Pup, I was able to make new friends and play. My teacher Kaylee is so much fun in agility class! The fur around my eyes gets stained, so my mom uses a Q-tip every morning and she tells me "you are brave, you are smart and you are handsome".
I'm Maddox, your friendly four-legged fluff rocket, and let me tell you—I live for the good stuff. First off, walks. Sweet, glorious walks. The kind where the wind rushes through my ears and I sniff every bush like it holds ancient secrets. Squirrels? Yeah, they think they’re slick, but I see them. I plot. I pounce. I usually miss. But the thrill—oh, the thrill! I adore car rides too—windows down, tongue out, ears flapping like I’m about to take off. My human’s say I have the soul of an adventurer and the appetite of a trash panda. Bath time? OBSESSED. Snuggles? Snuggles fix everything. I curl up at my human’s feet, sigh like a philosopher, and dream about bacon. Life IS good.
Hi my name is Lando. As you might have guessed my humans are Star Wars nerds! I’m a 4.5 year old Golden Doodle. My favourite things are going for walks, playing at daycare with my friends and going to the Aurora Farmers Market, where I am known by the vendors and rewarded appropriately. I have lots of energy and like to run really fast. I have a special talent too -when the little human at my house is having a seizure, I bark to let the other humans know that they need to go check on him. After I tell them, they tell me what a good boy I am. If you want to meet me, I’m at the Social Pup every Wednesday and at the Farmers market on Saturday mornings!
I’m Princess Leia! I’m 1 year old and the flu est Westie in the galaxy. I love belly rubs — they’re my favourite thing, right after cheese. CHEESE! If you open the fridge, I’m right there, just in case some cheese falls out. I also like ear plugs. Don’t judge me. They’re squishy and fun and taste like forbidden snacks. I have lots of doggy friends and we run and chase and sniff and zoom! I’m really fast. Like, super zoomies fast. When I get tired, I flop on my back for belly rubs and everyone melts because I’m just so cute. I sleep curled in a tiny ball and dream of cheese clouds and squeaky toys. Sometimes I bark at nothing... gotta keep the humans on their toes!
Bonjour! I’m Pepper the Frenchie. I'm almost 9 years old, but don’t let the age fool you. I’ve got the zoomies of a pup and the charm of a Parisian croissant. I demand snuggles now, treats on the hour, and belly rubs before bed (non-negotiable). If you’re sitting, I’m sitting on you. If you have food, I am your shadow. Life’s short—sniff everything, love hard, and always strut like the sidewalk is your runway.
I’m Bryn, a 4 year old English Springer Spaniel with big eyes, a bigger heart, and the softest paws in the house (or so I’m told). I live with my human Charlotte, who says I’ve taught her just as much about love as she’s taught me. I’m loyal, gentle, and fiercely protective of my people. There’s also George (the other human in our home) who’s always up for “schmoozing with the pooch” and is definitely guilty of overfeeding me in the name of love. I love morning cuddles, car rides with the windows cracked just right, and walks that turn into adventures. Life in our home is full of warmth, laughter, and the occasional dog-hair confetti. I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
“Music is the medicine of the mind,” wrote John A. Logan— and science agrees. Whether singing along to a favourite tune or reminiscing through a beloved melody, music has a proven effect on mood and memory. For seniors, especially those with dementia, it’s also a powerful tool for connection and brain stimulation.
“Music activates many parts of the brain and can even slow cognitive decline,” says Chelsea Mackinnon of IMHOPE, an arts and health organization. Music engages regions such as the amygdala and hippocampus, which govern emotion and memory, making it especially impactful in late-stage dementia.
Listening to or making music improves mental well-being, reduces stress, and enhances brain function. At Amica Senior Lifestyles, music is a core part of daily wellness programs. “One resident who rarely spoke began singing and harmonizing when we played her favourite song,” recalls team member Sumler. “Her joy and pride were unforgettable.”
You don’t need musical skills to use music in caregiving or self-care. Make playlists of upliftingor calming songs, play music during daily transitions, or explore new genres with residents. Attend live or virtual concerts, ask about meaningful songs from a senior’s past, or play “name that tune.” Even joining a choir—on or off mute—can bring joy. Music therapy and group sing-alongs enrich life at Amica every day. To learn more, visit amica.ca for webinars on music, wellness, and senior living tips.

On June 20th, York-Simcoe MPP Caroline Mulroney announced that the Ontario government is investing $611,500.00 to protect jobs and upgrade the East Gwillimbury Sports Complex. This investment is part of the province’s $200 million Community Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Fund (CSRIF), a provincewide initiative that helps communities revitalize local facilities, grow the economy and promote active, healthy living across Ontario.
The Christian Baptist Church on Main St. Newmarket, is one of the town’s most familiar landmarks. Originally, simply the Christian Church”, it was the third structure built on the top of the Main St. hill, where “man could be close to God”. It had its own burial ground to the east of the church. The Christian Church congregation had American roots, and dates back to 1822 in the Newmarket area
A local man, T.B. Wakefield, left $10,000 in his will for the construction of a new church (the 3rd and current structure). Mr. Wakefield had very specific wishes for the new structure and the church, completed in 1874, was built faithfully to his guidelines. His son-in-law, Brooks Howard, would donate another $4,000 for completing the interior and purchasing a pipe organ.
The church was designed by architect John T. Stokes of Sharon, who took the wishes of the Wakefield family and incorporated them into an imposing structure. Constructed in the revivalist style titled “First Point Gothic”, the contractor for the new church was Jacob Johnson
The laying of the corner stone on June 25, 1874, was surrounded by much pomp and ceremony. Six triumphal evergreen arches were erected over Main St. as the town welcomed the Earl of Dufferin, Governor General who performed the ceremony The occasion also marked the first time the song “The Maple Leaf Forever” was sung as composer Alexander Muir brought his students down from his local public school to sing
The photo pictured here appeared on a postcard around 1905. Made of locally-constructed buff bricks with red accent patterns. The steeple contains a 1200 lb bell and built for the accommodation of a four-face clock (never installed).
The church became the Christian Baptist Church in 1949. Though many architectural changes throughout the years, the church remains a Newmarket landmark. Currently led by the spiritual guidance of Pastor Andrew Hamilton, the church survives as a testament to its architect and builder, the generosity of the Wakefield and Howard families and its caring congregations over the years

This time of year, I love seeing so many people, neighbours and friends at our summer events and concerts. I hear a lot of people talking about the Thursday night concerts – Who is performing? Who’s going? Which craft brewer and local eatery will be there?
It’s a testament to the popularity of the weekly summer TD Music Series at the Riverwalk Commons for sure, but it also speaks to the power of shared experiences more generally. As a Town, we’ve deliberately created opportunities for residents to get out in the community and come together with family, friends, and neighbours.
Concerts and festivals, like Pride last month, or Canada Day this month or Moonlight Movies – serve as a form of community building. People from all walks of life and backgrounds, old and young, from near and far, often find common ground in the rhythm of music or the spirit of celebration. These events provide more than entertainment – they help us to create connections that linger long after the park clears out and the music is quiet.
It’s not just formally planned events though. Something as simple as sharing a meal on one of the great patios in town can spark lasting relationships. Community dinners, cultural gatherings, or even a spontaneous barbecue can give people a chance to connect, listen, and share stories.
In an increasingly digital world, real-life moments of connection have never been more vital. Whether through song, celebration, or across the dinner table, shared experiences remind us that we’re stronger together, and we’re at our best when our community is healthy and connected .
Easter Seals kicked off National Accessibility Week in a big way at Riverwalk Commons with the 49th Annual Ontario Easter Seals Walk/Run & Roll event! Founded by Joe Persechini, this incredible signature event has raised over $4 million to date—helping fund mobility devices and giving kids with physical disabilities the chance to enjoy an unforgettable summer camp experience. A heartfelt thank you to all the sponsors, volunteers, and the 300 participants who walked, ran, and rolled their way through the event and made it such a meaningful day.
Hey Neighbours! This page is for you to enjoy each month, featuring games, puzzles, contests and more. If you get stuck, follow @NeighbourMedia on Instagram and Facebook to view the solutions!

Late Spring had us stepping out in style — and all for a great cause (or two)! On May 19th, Jennifer and Keith attended the Omar’s Fashion Show, enjoying a fabulous evening celebrating Omar’s Shoes and helping raise funds for Southlake Health. Just ten days later, Jennifer lit up the runway at Fashion Inferno: A Disco Celebration in support of Abuse Hurts. With her signature flair, she brought awareness and helped raise funds for a cause that continues to make a meaningful impact.

The Central York Fire Services (CYFS) Ian Laing Headquarters recently hosted a charity car wash to help combat poverty right here in our community. Local firefighters rolled up their sleeves and washed cars in exchange for pay-what-you-can donations in support of United Way. But it wasn’t just about clean cars, visitors also had the chance to learn something new! Car seat safety experts from St. John Ambulance were on hand with valuable tips on how to properly install and adjust car seats. Plus, boat safety experts from York Regional Police shared advice to help keep families safe on the water this summer. This impactful event was made possible thanks to the dedicated members of the Central York Professional Firefighters Association (CYPFFA), who volunteered their time to support the United Way’s mission to fight local poverty. Thanks to the generosity of our community, the event raised $2,800 for United Way!

What is your favourite sport? Do you play for any local teams? I love softball and I’ve played it all my life! I played competitively for 7 years but put an end to my career with a knee injury. I now play recreationally in Aurora with the Valhalla Mixed Slow Pitch League. Catch me on Tuesday nights at second base getting all the double plays.
What is your favourite series to binge?
I love getting into cozy clothes, curling up in bed with a glass of wine and crying to Greys Anatomy episodes. On the other hand, I love binging the Housewives of Orange County and Beverly Hills. In such a social role within the community, it’s nice to have mindless shows to enjoy crawling into bed to.
What is your favourite season (winter, spring, summer, fall), and why? Summers in Canada are short, but they are by far my favourite. Cottaging is where all my best memories have been made. My family has been cottaging in Southampton/Port Elgin every summer since I was little, and it’s truly my happy place. Beautiful beaches on Lake Huron, gorgeous sunsets, and cute markets and shops to explore. Also, all the sports I love happen in the summer; baseball, tennis and pickleball. Can’t get enough of playing baseball every week and trying to soak up those warm summer nights.
