Official Publication of the Manitoba Hereford Association
And just like that, fall has come and we are just weeks away from weaning.
Hi, my name is Samantha Rimke and I am the new editor of the Manitoba Hereford Association’s Newsletter, the “Hereford Connection.” I grew on a fourth-generation family farm in southwest Manitoba raising purebred Hereford cattle. I was an active member of the MJHA and CJHA for 21 years, showing since I was three years old. I am now an active member of the Young Guns. Herefords have always been a passion of mine, and I am excited to start this new journey.
The MHA Hereford Connection is published twice a year, in February and September, in all interest of the Manitoba Hereford Association. This newsletter seeks to promote growth and development of the Hereford industry within the province of Manitoba. The newsletter is free of charge to all active Manitoba Hereford Association members. The material produced is done with high integrity, however I assume no responsibility for errors or omissions.
This newsletter is sent out with a new mailing list, for some reason if you have received this in error, please feel free to contact me at samantha.rimke@gmail.com to remove your name. If you know of someone who is not receiving the newsletter, but has previously, please contact me so they can be added to the mailing list.
I would like to thank the MHA for the opportunity to produce the Hereford Connection and I look forward to working with everyone to promote and market your herds through the Newsletter.
Thanks, Sam

In the blink of an eye it seems we have skipped over summer. Once again many fought a hard battle with Mother Nature; some have struggled through another dry growing season while others have been lucky in the rain lottery. There are some who are facing a feed shortage this year and it is at this time I become most grateful that we raise the feed efficient breed. Bonanza was another well attended junior event in Weyburn which had our Manitoba juniors mingling with old and new friends a little closer to home. The juniors represented our province well and are excited to be hosting Bonanza 2020 in Brandon.
Thank you to Batho Farms and AM Ranching for hosting the annual MHA Field Day. Despite the questionable weather at the start of the day, it was a pleasure to see so many come out, visit, laugh, and celebrate their herds. Looking forward, we have many production sales this fall. After them, I encourage breeders to join fellow Hereford breeders at our annual showing at Ag Ex in Brandon. The Good as Gold Sale and the annual meeting for the Manitoba Hereford Association will be in December.
Hope to see you down the road.
‘Till next time, Steven

Congratulations on another very successful Bonanza and Hereford Week in Canada! Anyone that has been involved with organizing or volunteering for a Bonanza knows that this is no small task. Thank you to everyone that played a part in the 40th Anniversary of Bonanza; it was a tremendous event!
During the week of Bonanza, the leadership of the CHA, CJHA and KGF had meetings and workshops. The KGF hosted a seminar to help educate members on the sensitive, but very important topic, of succession planning. Thanks to the KGF trustees for providing this educational opportunity on a topic that is so pertinent to the industry.
The CJHA held their summer National Council meetings and covered budgeting, marketing, fundraising and a discussion surrounding the rules and regulations that encompass Bonanza.
Bonanza has always been a youth show for the youth, and the CJHA board is striving to maintain the focus on this model. However, with the increase in younger or less experienced CJHA members, the council is looking to incorporating new rules that allow more adult involvement. This year adults were able to lend a hand to a larger extent than they have in the past, and the feed-back was great. For Bonanza 2020, the rules will be similar, and even a little more liberal for that of parent involvement. The CJHA doesn’t want to have parents grooming or fitting cattle, but they feel that to encourage younger, less experienced members to come take part in Bonanza, there must be some level of parent involvement allowed to ensure the safety and fun of all participants. The CJHA asks adult members to not abuse these rule changes as Bonanza has a legacy of being a great learning environment for the CJHA members.
The CHA held its summer board and committee meetings in Weyburn during Hereford Week in Canada as well. There continues to be a large commercial focus on the
discussions at both the board and committee levels. Breed improvement is evaluating new traits that could be important to Hereford breeders and the commercial industry in the future. The Show committee continues it discussion on how to grow Hereford influence at Jr shows. The committee recognizes that engaging youth, and exposing new youth to the Hereford breed has great meaning to the future of the breed. We would like to extend a special congratulations to Dave & Carol Guilford on inducted into the CHA Honor Roll.
The CHA Board is engaged in gathering information from the commercial industry on the performance and the perception of Hereford cattle. They are working to gather information to better direct breed improvement and marketing efforts to focus the CHA’s efforts. The CHA board has also given the direction to build a Strategic Marketing Committee. A committee that will develop a more specific marketing plan for Hereford. This committee will make recommendations to the CHA Board on modifications and plan for the development of new association and breeder marketing assets.
Our next meetings will be held in December at the CHA office in Calgary. At that time, the board will be meeting with a group of cattle industry advisors to have an open discussion on the larger industry and the breed.
The CHA proudly welcomes Judy Finseth to the team! Judy will be taking over as the Managing Editor of the Canadian Hereford Digest, as well Judy will be responsible for Field Service duties for the provinces of BC, AB, SK and MB.
The Canadian Hereford Association congratulates David and Carol Guilford, for their induction into the Honour Roll.
The Guilford family farm was started by Dave’s grandpa, John in 1903, after he immigrated to Canada from England in 1902. He bought his first Hereford heifers in 1925, starting the tradition of raising Hereford cattle. Frank, Dave’s dad, returned home to farm with John and continue raising Herefords after graduating with a diploma in Agriculture in Winnipeg. Kae, Dave’s mother, was a long time supporter of the Manitoba Hereford Association Ladies Group.
Dave was born in Winnipeg in 1945 and from the early age of seven became a 4-H member. Dave and his dad selected a nice quiet heifer, Patience Ford 2P, for him to show. This heifer would be the start of a lifelong career raising Herefords. Dave graduated grade 12 from Pilot Mound in 1963 and then went on to U of M and graduated with a degree in Social Ability after one year. Dave married Carol Mae Guilford (Olson) on April 13, 1968. Carol helped with calving, organizing and was involved in the MHA ladies association. Their two children are Cynthia Dawn Mayo (Bart) and Rodney John (Kristi) and they have six grandchildren. Both Cynthia and Rod were involved in 4-H for 10 years and enjoyed showing and fitting cattle for sale. Cynthia was the MHA Hereford Queen in 1985 and she served on the National Junior Council. She became a registered nurse and was an energetic caring person who was able to bring out the best in everyone. Cynthia passed away in July 2016 after a battle with cancer. Rodney graduated from NDSU with a degree in animal science in Fargo, North Dakota. He then worked for Purina Mills before returning to the farm to raise Hereford cattle with his parents. Both Dave and Rodney were involved in the Manitoba Hereford Association and served as presidents of the Canadian Hereford Association. Dave in 1992 and Rod in 2002. This allowed Dave and Rod to join a small group of breeders where both father and son have served as Presidents of the Canadian Hereford Association. In 1974 Dave’s brother Don joined Frank and Dave in a partnership which continued until 1985 when Dave and Don bought out Frank’s share. In 1986, Dave and Don divided the 300 plus cow herd and machinery and formed two separate entities, Guilford Farms Double U Polled Hereford (Dave and Carol) and Guilford Herford Ranch (Don and Diane).
In 2009 Rod with the help of his wife Kristi started Xports International Inc., a livestock marketing company that exports cattle to other countries in the world. Since then, they have exported over 5000 head of cattle and continue to do consulting work. These new ventures started to take quite a bit of Rod’s time so the decision was made to sell a good portion of the farm in 2010, and cut back to about 200 cows, which is where the herd is at present. Rod and Kristi’s children now
have Hereford cattle of their own and are the 5th generation for Guilford’s to raise purebred Hereford cattle.
The Guilford family sponsors the Senior Showmanship class at the local 4-H achievement day and sponsor the Frank Guilford Memorial Trophy for Champion Steer at the Clearwater 4-H club show. Dave and Carol were 4-H leaders for many years and were passionate about encouraging public speaking, meeting management, and character development. Together, Dave and Carol organized and participated in the Dryden, ON 4-H exchange trip. They then organized the Dryden 4-H clubs trip to their area. Dave and Carol are members of the St. Paul’s Anglican church in Clearwater where Dave has continued to act as the warden for the past 30 years and Carol has been ordained as a Priest. Dave and Carol continue to be active in community events including baseball tournaments and Harvest Moon Festivals in Clearwater.
Dave and Carol have bred many outstanding, productive Herefords over the years, one notable sire being Double U YoYo 106B. They have participated in various shows and sales having many high sellers and champions. For many years, they had the top gaining Hereford bull and best group of 5 at the Douglas Test Station. Guilford Hereford genetics have been sold internationally to Czechoslovakia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Denmark, Japan, and the USA. Dave has judged many shows all over North America. Dave and Carol were instrumental in promoting the Hereford breed by working with 15 other herds to sell 300 cross bred heifers annually, all having Guilford Hereford genetics in their breeding. Guilfords participated in many production sales over the years in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Dave worked as a field man for the Canadian Hereford Association marketing the THE program and EPDs’s in 1982. He was influential in organizing the National Junior Hereford Association and continued as a council advisor until 1996. Dave and Carol hosted junior ambassadors from Australia and organized their summer tour across Western Canada. He represented the Manitoba Hereford Association internationally at the Fort Worth Livestock Show with a display and booth, resulting in the sale of bulls to Mexico from Manitoba breeders. Dave traveled around the world and marketed Canadian Hereford genetics in countries such as China and Kazakhstan.
Dave and Carol have been excellent promotors of the Hereford breed locally, nationally and internationally.
Roy purchased his first purebred Hereford animal from Ron and Everett Batho in the fall of 1966. Her name was Big Hill Fair Fagan Reg No. 620514. She was a horned cow and she was the beginning of a herd.
Roy started the herd in his own name as his father, Tom, said he was too old! However, enjoyed the Herefords and working alongside Roy every step of the way. Roy continued to add to his herd; buying out of Sam Mitchell’s production sales, again from Ron Batho and supported other breeders that consigned to the Pioneer Sale. His first registered Hereford of many was Manns Anxiety 1Y UBT. The herd is now predominately polled, with a focus on functional and productive cattle.
Roy is an annual consignor to Lundar Bull Sale, Manitoba Hereford Association Good as Gold Sale and Prime Plus Bull Sale. He is proud to have his animals working in many herds across Manitoba and Saskatchewan and grateful for the continued support from fellow cattle producers.
The Manns family was honoured to be nominated as the 2013 Manitoba Hereford Commercial Breeder of the Year. Roy and his wife, Sandra, are still actively farming with their son Steven and his family and their daughter, Heather. Steven continues to pursue the Herefords and Heather has a black angus herd and teaches school in MacGregor. Their youngest daughter, Kristen, has a small Red Angus/Hereford cross herd in conjunction with her husband, Kevin Stocki in Fisher Branch.
Roy is honoured to receive his 50 year pin and thanks the Breeders and Association for their support over the years.
Congratulations Roy!
Jay Rimke began his herd of Purebred Hereford cattle at a very young age. Jay’s parents, Albert and Michelle, bought him a CJHA membership when he was just a year old. To this day, Jay is very grateful that his parents got him involved in the Hereford Association.
BFL Miss Summit 41X 64C is the dam of the cow family that got Jay’s herd started. His first registration was in 1995, MAR 112C MS Cash 98E, who is the dam to one of his best cows to date, MAR 517 Ms Daisy 18G. Daisy’s show career started as Jay’s first 4-H project as a Pee Wee member. He then continued showing her at many other shows with the most memorable being Bonanza; showing her in Virden in 1999, Brandon in 2006 and Princeton, BC in 2009. At Bonanza 2006 she was named Champion Semen Donation Animal as a 9-year-old cow, along with having one of her son’s be named Champion Bred and Owned Bull. In Princeton, many breeders could not believe her age and how well she travelled. Jay also had a very successful Bonanza in 2013 being honored to receive the Major Jay Fox Ambassador Award and Senior Aggregate. Jay has also been inducted into the CJHA Honor Roll. Jay participated in 13 Bonanzas across Canada. He was also very involved in junior programs, such as semen donation. Jay was the Manitoba Delegate on the CJHA Board for three years and now currently in his third term on the MHA Board, serving as Vice President.
Along with being very active in the CJHA and CHA, Jay also participated in 4-H for 18 years. In 2015, Jay donated 100% proceeds from his 4-H Steer to STARS Air Ambulance in appreciation for saving his life in 2012. Jay is no longer a 4-H member, but continues to volunteer at locate 4-H events, judging 4-H shows and helping out on achievement day. Jay graduated from Olds College in 2015 and now lives on his family farm in Oak Lake, MB where he continues to work alongside his grandfather, father and brother raising Hereford, Angus and Commercial Cattle. Jay has his own herd of 25 cows and continues to grow that each year. Jay is passionate about the Hereford industry and is looking forward to what the future has to offer.
Congratulations Jay!
Hi, and greetings from the MJHA! This summer has been very busy with Bonanza 2019 being so close to home in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. We had 12 junior members attend this year from Manitoba; some new, and many familiar faces. Grant Roulston took some great pictures from the week! Check them out at grantspix.com. Levi Rimke won Champion Yearling Bull in the Bred & Owned Show as well as Champion Junior Yearling Heifer in the Open Show. Orianna Hyndman won Champion Senior Bull and Champion Hereford Influenced Heifer Calf. Emma Falconer won Reserve Grand Champion Female. Bennett Foster’s team won Senior Team Grooming. There were many Manitoba successes in the photography, art, and speech competitions as well. Congrats to Bobbi Jo Foster for winning the CJHA KGF “Future of the Breed” Scholarship, and to Orianna and Teegan Hyndman for winning Grand Aggregate and Junior Aggregate. All-in-all, Bonanza 2019 was amazing! The weather was perfect, the location was perfect, the food was delicious, and the dance was lots of fun!
Bonanza 2020 is being held in Brandon, Manitoba next year. It takes lots of volunteers and helping hands to have such a big event run smoothly. We are expecting lots of juniors to attend because it is being held in central Canada. If you would like to volunteer, talk to a junior member and we will direct you to someone that will help you find the task that is right for you.
Have a great fall, I hope to see you at Ag Ex!
Kennedy MannsSpecial thank you to AM Ranching for donating the heifer calf that was auctioned off at the MHA Field Day! Also, thank you to everyone that purchased tickets!
Bobbi-Jo is a recent graduate of Goose Lake High School and is currently enrolled at Lakeland College to pursue a diploma of Ag. Business and Animal Science. She comes from a 5-generation Hereford operation which started with Primrose Herefords in 1891 and her plan is to continue in the family tradition developing her own herd of purebred Herefords. She is very active in the junior Hereford programs and 4-H, showing cattle at Bonanzas, Agribition and Ag Ex. Bobbi-Jo was co-president of her school’s student council and was involved in school sports, community volunteering and held several part time jobs within her community. Her goal is to pursue a career closely related to the cattle industry.
Johne’s Disease (pronounced “yo-knees”) is a chronic, incurable, fatal infectious disease of cattle caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium paratuberculosis. One of the biggest problems with this disease is that it is difficult to detect and easily spread. There is no treatment and no cure.
Imagine this scenario: your best cow, the female that has won several ribbons in the show ring, is pregnant with her fourth calf. She never gained right after her last calf. You thought she wasn’t getting enough feed, so you gave her extra. She had on-again, off-again diarrhea but you thought that was feed related. Now, she has diarrhea all the time, despite a good appetite and no matter what you feed her she will not gain weight. Your veterinarian runs some tests and she comes back positive for Johne’s disease. What does this mean for this cow? For your whole herd? So let’s summarize this disease and what this diagnosis means.
How do cattle become infected? Calves are the most susceptible to the bacteria and are typically infected within the first 30 days, but can take up to 6 months. There are three major ways calves are infected: 1) calves are born positive – they became infected in-utero from a positive dam; 2) calves ingest the bacteria in colostrums or milk from a positive dam; 3) ingest the bacteria from manure coated teats, licking gates/corrals contaminated with infected manure; or ingesting contaminated feed and water. Feed and water become contaminated from the manure of infected cattle. Once a cow becomes infected, the bacterial lives in the small intestine. As the bacteria grows and damages the small intestine the animal begins to shed the bacteria in the feces. As an animal enters the final stages of Johne’s with chronic diarrhea she is shedding huge numbers of bacteria into the environment daily in her manure. Calves only need to ingest a small number of bacteria to become positive, whereas, mature cattle are less susceptible and must ingest higher bacterial numbers to become infected.
Why is Johne’s disease difficult to manage? There are three main reasons why Johne’s disease is difficult to manage: 1) cattle are infected at a very young age and do not
show clinical signs of the disease typically for several years. On average it is 5-7 years after an animal is infected before they will show clinical signs. Initially after infection an animal will appear perfectly healthy, however, she will be shedding bacteria in her feces contaminating the environment and infecting herd mates. As the disease progresses clinical signs include: weight loss, on and off again watery diarrhea which progresses to chronic diarrhea all while the animal maintains a good appetite. Once the animal has chronic diarrhea the intestine has become so damaged it is no longer able to absorb nutrients and water properly. 2) The bacteria that causes’ Johne’s disease is very hardy and can survive in the environment for up to one year. 3) There are no perfect laboratory tests to diagnose animals infected with Johne’s disease.
How does Johne’s disease enter a farm? Johne’s disease almost always begins on a farm from the purchase of an animal already infected with the disease. There currently is no mandatory testing in Canada for producers selling breeding stock, however, if you are purchasing breeding stock, you can always inquire if there has been any positive diagnosis in the herd. The bacteria could also enter on shared machinery and equipment between farms’ that has been contaminated with infected manure. Biosecurity practices will definitely help in the prevention of infecting your farm.
What to do with positive show cow from the above scenario? CULL, CULL, CULL. The offspring from this cow must also be culled. All positive Johne’s cattle must be culled. There is no treatment. There is no cure. All positive animals do is infect the rest of your herd. If you have a positive diagnosis in your herd, your veterinarian will develop a plan and discuss the costs to eliminate this disease from your herd. Because of the nature of this disease and the limited abilities of the current diagnostic tests it can take 5-7 years to feel confident that your herd is free of Johne’s disease.

The cattle industry is in good hands after watching the participants at Round Up. On August 2-4, 2019, 48 enthusiastic Manitoba and Saskatchewan Junior Cattle Producers attended the 12th Annual Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup in Neepawa, Manitoba. Excitement in the cattle industry brought out a top-notch group of interested cattle producers and 58 head of cattle. This year 22 new members attended Roundup for the first time.
Round-Up is a weekend filled with friendships, learning, skills and knowledge. It was once again another successful weekend! Our show would not happen without our dedicated sponsors, parents, juniors and committee members who have stood behind this Junior All Breeds Show and helped to make it a success.
Thank you to all that attended Round Up and we look forward to seeing you next year!

Ken & Michele Gurman are the second-generation raising horned Hereford cattle on the family farm just eight miles south of Vita, MB.
In 1956, Ken’s parents, John and Olga Gurman, started using Hereford cattle, always purchasing registered horned Hereford bulls to use on their straight bred Hereford females. Ken and Michele have continued this practice along with their son, Dylan.
Congratulations Ken & Michele!

The MHA honours the life of Albert Huntley Knox who suddenly passed away on June 19, 2019 at the age of 72.
Huntley was born and raised on the farm southwest of Miami. His passions were his family, his farm and his community. He was actively involved as a councillor for the RM of Thompson. Huntley was a true volunteer, president of the Miami Hall Board, Chairman of the Miami and Area Foundation and very honoured to be a founding member. He was extremely honoured to see his family embrace volunteering as he did and his parents before him.
Huntley joined the family farm in his younger years raising Hereford cattle and grains. First with his Dad, George Knox, then with Nancy, brother Jim and their children. He formed a small trucking company hauling livestock, grain, gravel and PMU. Huntley was always proud of his family and their endeavours, attending many cattle shows, hockey games, skating competitions, watching curling, ball games and many rodeos. And the biggest fan of his grandchildren in skating, hockey, curling, 4h, soccer, ball and swimming.
Huntley will be lovingly remembered by wife Nancy, 2 Sons, Allan (Heather), Dale (Roxann Gardiner) and Daughter Heather (Troy Turner). Grandchildren – Brayden and Brooklyn, Kaitlyn, Rebecca and Alexa, Morgan and Mason. Survived by his brothers- Jim (Merle Bryce), Ted (Fran), Andrew (Joann) and Gary. His Sisters Janette (Martin Moody), Barbara (Jim Rankin) and many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbours.
We are sad to announce the peaceful passing of Marvin Rueben King on May 10, 2019 at the age of 97.
Marvin ranched with his wife Eileen and their son Lawrence under Bar K Ranch. Herefords have been the mainstay of the Bar K operation for over 60 years. Marvin was actively involved with his church and has been on several industry governing boards, including the Marquette Co-op board, the Sheep Producers’ Association, the local community hall board and the fair board.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years Eileen, daughter Marlene, son Lawrence (Kelly); grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Robert (Braylinn) (Emmalyn) Jeffrey (Linda) Kristina, Craig Katie (Rhys) Laura; sister Doris (Jim); sisters-in-law Shirley and Doreen and extended family Evelyn, Jean (George) Jack (Isabel) Kathy as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by son Wayne April 30, 1976 age 17, parents Ben and Marjorie King, siblings Jennie, Myrtle, Annie, Ron, Elsie, Harold as well as Bert and Edna Lawrence, sister-in-law Isabel and brothers-in-law.
Albert Clarence Gryba passed away suddenly on April 15, 2019, on the family farm. Albert and Gwen Galbraith were united in marriage on June 14, 1969. On December 19, 1970, he graduated from Reisch Auction College in Mason City, Iowa, and shortly after graduation he started his auctioneering business, Gryba’s Auction Service. Albert & Gwen operated a mixed family farm for many years as well as Gryba’s Auction Service.
In recent years, he farmed with his son, Mark. He spent many years showing his dad’s and his own purebred polled Hereford cattle at the Toronto Winter Fair, and many country fairs in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Albert was involved in multiple community organizations. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and ice fishing. He always enjoyed music and dancing. Following his retirement, he was able to pursue his lifelong passion for dancing, during which time he met Marilyn Schwitzer.
Albert is survived by his partner, Marilyn Schwitzer; son Mark of Grandview; daughter Cheryl (Rob Portmann) of Stoney Plain, Alberta; grandchildren, Benson and Jayda Gryba, Taytum Williams (Mason Beloin), Tanner Williams, and Kaidence Hales, Kira Portmann, Darvin Portmann and great-grandchild Ryley Beloin; Marilyn’s children, Debbie Lee of Virden, MB, Darlene Ondik of Kamloops, BC, Dwayne Ondik of Esterhazy, SK, and Darren Ondik of Sylvan Lake, AB; Marilyn’s grandchildren, Shanna-Rae, Chantel, Jillissa, Jezlynn, Allie, and Ethan; and Marilyn’s great-grandchildren, Peyton and Ireland.
