Welcome to 2020! Another year and another decade full of opportunity!
I would like to take the time to congratulate everyone on this past show and sale season. It was another one for the record books and all breeders should be proud of their success!
Calving season is well underway for some or just getting started for others. This is my favourite time of the year and to see the young calves that were planned last spring hit the ground is an accomplishment in itself. Now we have the opportunity to watch them grow and produce in the future and be the next sire or donor in the herd.
I would like to thank everyone that contributes to the MHA Hereford Connection Newsletter. Your feedback and advertisements are greatly appreciated. I enjoy working on the newsletter and it is a privilege to have so many supporting me!
I would like to wish everyone a successful calving season and bull sale season and I will see you around!
Thanks, Sam

Happy New Year, everyone! So far winter has been taking it pretty easy on us. What a pleasure to have enjoyed some time without bone chilling temperatures. Another busy fall found us at Ag Ex in Brandon and at a well attended Good as Gold Sale. The quality of cows was second to none.
I would like to take the time to thank everyone who came to the annual meeting. I would like to thank Vivian Jones and Wendell Martens for their time on the board.
The up coming year looks active as well. Calving season is about to begin if it hasn’t already for you. Bull sale season is on the mind of many as well. I hope breeders will begin entertaining the idea of joining the Manitoba Hereford Association in Lundar for the summer show. Keep June 13th open - I hope to see you there!
The most exciting part of the summer is that Bonanza 2020 is in Brandon this year! This is a huge event for our juniors and we look forward to many participants because of our place in central Canada! The organizing committee would welcome your assistance. If you could spare some time to lend a hand at this large scale event, please contact a board member. See you down the road!
Hello from the MJHA! I hope everyone is having a good winter so far!
We have been having lots of meetings about Bonanza and getting ready for the show. Bonanza 2020 is in Brandon this year from July 29 - August 1, and I hope to see lots of juniors there so we can host the most amazing event ever! Find registration packages and information about “Herefords in the Wheat City” on the Canadian Hereford Association website. The MB juniors would like to thank AM Ranching for donating a heifer for our fundraiser at the Field Day. We would also like to thank Batho Farms Ltd. for donating their winning Heifer Calf back to the MJHA which was then resold and purchased by Bill and Marilyn Vanden Boer.
I wish everyone good luck with their 4-H speeches and shows in the upcoming months!
For once the weather has been favorable, this winter. Feeding cows has been better than the last number of years, (knock on wood). Hope everyone’s feed supply will last a bit longer.
Not much has changed since my last report in the Digest. Stephen and I both attended the National Western Stock Show in Denver; there were a few Canadian breeders and exhibitors in attendance. The sales in Denver were great but down from previous years, basically because of the economy south of the border.
There are several couples from Canada going down to New Zealand for the World Hereford Conference at the end of February. We will be having the board meeting after the WHC, there may be items to discuss from the conference.
Hope everyone has a great calving season with many champions being born. Good luck to all with bull sales and best of luck with your purchases.
Just a reminder that Bonanza and the CHA AGM will be in Manitoba this year, and if you have time to help it would be greatly appreciated, whether it be physically or monetary. Hope to see you there!
DNA
The lab will now be assessing a fee for loose hair samples received in hair sample envelopes. To avoid these new charges, please be sure to TAPE the hair shafts directly to your DNA application, leaving the roots accessible.
Don’t get caught waiting for DNA!
If you’ve got animals entered in sales in the new year, collect those DNA samples for any ETs, sires or ‘dams of AI sires’ right away! Be sure to allow a minimum of 4 weeks at the lab for DNA results. Applications are easily available through your online log-in under “Requests”. You can print these immediately to send with the samples!
• All natural sires and donor dams require DNA on file
• All AI sires must be fully parentage verified to both parents
Tattoos
Take a look in the ears. All animals must have a clear and distinct tattoo. If you have a tattoo that is not satisfactory, contact the CHA office for Permission to Re-tattoo. Do not add to or alter a tattoo without contacting the CHA office.
April 15, 2020
Yearling and twoyear old bulls plus 15 black, baldie heifer calves.
We are looking forward to hosting the 2020 Manitoba Hereford Association Field Day on Saturday, August 29, 2020 at the farm. We hope to see everyone there! Directions to the Farm:
Steven lives in Austin, MB on his family ran farming operation, Manns Herefords. They have about 250-275 cows that are calved out annually. They also put up around 600 acres of grain land mainly for feed. Steven was born into the Hereford industry with his family always raising Hereford cattle. Steven has been on the board for 10 to 12 years now and he is most looking forward to hosting Bonanza in Brandon this summer.
Jay farms alongside his family in Oak Lake, MB under the name AM Ranching. The farm calves out around 450 pairs between AM Ranching, Batho Farms Ltd. and Jay, Samantha and Levi. Jay has grown up in the Hereford industry and was very active through his junior career. Jay is a young guns member and is currently in his third year of being on the board. Jay is looking forward to hosting Bonanza 2020 and giving young junior members a great experience similar to what he had while attending Bonanza.
Holly lives in the Hamiota, MB area with Kevin, Orianna and Teegan. They work alongside Holly’s parents, Allan and Bonnie Woodhouse and raise purebred and commercial Herefords. The majority of the females are bred Hereford, with some being bred Shorthorn. Holly and Kevin own and operate Rock’n “h” Herefords and Rock’n “h” Livestock Supplies. Holly was born and raised in the Hereford industry and has been a member for over 20 years and on the MHA board for over 10 years. She is most excited to help the juniors host a memorable Bonanza.
Bobbi lives in Wawanesa with her husband Blair where they run 70 purebred and 45 commercial Hereford females. They use both polled and horned bulls on the purebred side of the operation and black angus on the commercial cows. The Rankin family runs under the name Chokecherry Lane Herefords and are Verified Beef Plus certified. Bobbi first got involved in the Hereford industry by helping out at Baslyn Polled Herefords after school and some weekends. She bought her first Hereford in 1978 and has been a member ever since. Bobbi was also the Manitoba Hereford Queen in 1978. This is Bobbi’s fourth year on the board and she is looking forward to promoting the breed and her fellow breeders, educating the public on the sustainability of the breed and the beef industry as a whole.
Tyler lives southwest of Boissevain near Turtle Mountain Provincial Park. Along with his wife, Tara, and daughter, Taryn, they run a small herd of registered Herefords which is slowly expanding. They are a self-sufficient farm raising their own pigs, chickens and garden. Tyler is a commercial beekeeper running around 300 colonies and runs a small registered trapline in the neighboring provincial park. Tyler was introduced to the Hereford industry by Wally Mitchell and has been a member for 4 years now, with this being his second year on the board. Tyler is looking forward to hosting a successful Bonanza in Brandon this summer.
Keith lives in Portage La Prairie, MB with his wife, Cheryl, where they own and operate KTCT Polled Herefords. Keith recently retired from his off-farm job, and now spends his time focusing on the ranch and spending time with his grandchildren. Keith grew up in the Hereford industry, carrying on the tradition from his father, Orville Troop. Keith has been on the MHA board in the past, but recently stepped up into the role again this year. Keith is looking forward to hosting the MHA Field Day this August at his home ranch as well as helping put on a successful Bonanza.
Katlyn, her husband, Troy, and daughter, Kira, live near Portage La Prairie, MB. They operate a small grain and purebred Polled Hereford operation while both maintaining full-time, off farm jobs. In the near future, they plan to take over Katlyn’s parent’s grain operation near Oakville, MB. Katlyn is a Sales Agronomist for Shur-Gro Farm Services in Portage. Through 4-H, she showed Hereford influenced steers but did not become fully introduced to the Hereford industry until 2011 when she met Troy. 2020 will mark her 8th year in the Hereford breed and her first year on the MHA board. Katlyn is looking forward to getting more involved in the MHA’s events and helping run a successful Bonanza.
Kenny Gulka is a first-year director for the MHA. He operates a third-generation mixed grain and purebred Hereford farm under Twin View Polled Herefords six miles west of Strathclair, MB. Kenny got involved with the Herefords through his wife Janelle (McDonald) and her parents. They have both been members for 10 years. A “Bonanza” year in Manitoba will surely bring a deeper insight into the long history of the breed and offer an opportunity to get familiar with the many established and upcoming breeders throughout Canada.
Albert, along with his wife, Michelle, and three children, Jay, Samantha and Levi, run AM Ranching just south of Oak Lake, MB. Annually, they calve out around 450 purebred Herefords, Angus and commercial cows alongside Michelle’s father, Ron Batho. Albert grew up in the Hereford industry farming out of Rorketon, MB with his parents, Hubert and Gisela, under the name JAD Polled Herefords. Albert met Michelle through the CJHA and they began their herd together in 1990. Albert has been on the board forever, too many years to count, and is currently the President of the CHA. Albert is most looking forward to hosting Bonanza this year.

They calve out 85 cows, consisting of 40 purebred and 45 Hereford influence females who are bred to a black bull. Brent was a director of the MHA for 14 years and was president for three years.
Brent and Corrine published the Hereford Connection for 12 years, twice annually in February and September. The newsletter has gone from being published in black and white to now being printed in colour.
Brent has been organizing the Good as Gold Sale for ten years along with Corrine, Cooper and Langley’s help.
Jackie, who’d never had anything to do with cattle in her life prior to her marriage to Wally in 1990, soon became actively involved in the cattle industry, helping out at the Manitoba Livestock Expo and various MOE shows, as well as helping with the show cattle.
In the mid 1990’s, she joined the Manitoba Hereford Association acting as Secretary-Treasure for a number of years and later became the first woman is Canada to be a president of a Provincial Hereford Association. She also managed and produced the Hereford Newsletter for many years, as well as managing the MHA Good as Gold Sale for approximately ten years prior to turning it over to Brent and Corrine Blaine.
She has been actively involved in three Hereford Bonanza’s during the past 20 years, and is looking forward to helping out with Bonanza 2020.
Congratulations Brent, Corrine, Cooper and Langley on your 2019 MHA Stewardship Award!RSK Farms is a family-run mixed farm which began operation in 1984. The cow calf facilities are located approximately 7 miles east of Brandon, MB along the Trans-Canada Highway. Bulls and females are developed 5 miles north of Douglas, MB at a second farm site. Sale and show cattle along with our donors are kept there as well.
RSK Farms breeds approximately 160 females which consist of Purebred Polled Hereford and Commercial Cross cattle. The land base consists of 5 ½ sections of both owned and rented land which is into annual crop, rotated perennial and annual pasture, for forage production and grain and hay sales.
RSK Farms uses AI and ET breeding strategies to source some of the breed’s top genetics and in turn use their top producing females to create quality offspring that display improved consistency, performance maternal traits and carcass. Their herd are true beef cows, developed over generations of sound breeding, elite genetics and balanced traits. Genetics from RSK Farms have been consigned to many sales over the past years and can be found throughout North America and the Globe. RSK Farms has had great success over the years showing and exhibiting cattle across the country.
Congratulations Rae, Stephanie, Andrew and the rest of the Kopeechuk family on your CHA 25 Year Pin!
Congratulations to Dave and Carol Guilford and family on their induction into the CHA Honour Roll. Dave and Carol have been excellent promotors of the Hereford breed locally, nationally and internationally.
For a full write up on Dave and Carol, please see our last issue!
The Manitoba Hereford Association is pleased to make available a $250.00 scholarship for Junior members to further their education.
The Junior is required to send in a brief write up talking about Hereford/Hereford influence no more than 600 words, provide a letter of acceptance into a Course, and give one breeder reference.
We are pleased to introduce you to the future of the Manitoba Hereford breed, Thomas and Ivy Allen! Thomas and Ivy ranch alongside their parents, Phil and Lesley, on their farm in the small village of Bield, MB – just down the road from Roblin.
Thomas is turning 12 in March and is currently in grade six at Roblin Elementary School. Thomas’s favourite thing to do is fish in any form – ice fishing, shore fishing or fishing off the boat. He loves it all! He has even caught a few master anglers. Thomas also enjoys karate and currently holds his green belt!
Ivy just turned 8 and is currently in grade two at Roblin Elementary. She has a strong passion for dance and enjoys every moment of it. She has tried ballet and hip hop, and is currently taking tap and musical theatre lessons.
The Allen family started using Hereford bulls on their commercial cows in 2012. They switched over from red angus bulls to take advantage of the Hereford’s docile temperament. This was an important decision to Phil when considering the safety of the kids and their heavy involvement on the ranch. Both kids enjoy helping out on the farm but most enjoy calving season and summer pasture checks on the quad.
The family purchased their first ten registered heifers from Robin Hogberg in 2013 with the intention of breeding bulls for their own use. Things took off from there! They registered their first calves in 2015 under the herd name Allenhurst.
Thomas joined the show ring at the age of six, joining the local 4-H club, Prairie Mountain 4-H Beef Club. His first heifer was Foster’s Beyoncé. Ivy entered the show ring at the young age of four years old, being a future 4-Her. The kids have been showing at Manitoba Ag Ex since 2016. Thomas, using his first 4-H steer cheque, purchased his first heifer from Albert & Michelle Rimke in 2017 at the Manitoba Good as Gold Sale. Choosing his own tattoo letters in 2018, Thomas registered his bull calf off of the AM Ranching female under the name Rolling Hills Herefords in 2019. Thomas has also won the highest “rate of gain” two years in a row with his Hereford sired steers. Thomas’s herd now totals three females and their calves, all which have been purchased from the sale of his own 4-H steers. Ivy will be showing and selling her first 4-H steer this June and will follow along in her brother’s footsteps by purchasing herself a female of her own in the fall.
Thomas and Ivy attended their first Bonanza in 2019 in Weyburn, SK. They both showed their Hereford influence heifer, Posie. Ivy’s favourite part of showing is being in the ring. She enjoys every moment of leading her heifer around. Thomas’s favourite part of showing is the grooming aspect and preparing the animal for the ring.
Ivy’s favourite show heifer is AHH Ellie 2G, who she showed at Ag Ex 2019. Ivy loves Ellie for her pigmentation and for being nice and calm. Thomas’s favourite show heifer is MAR 27C Candee 28E. He showed Candee as a yearling heifer in 2018 at 4-H and as a continuation heifer in 2019 winning Supreme Champion Female at his 4-H Achievement.
Thomas and Ivy are both looking forward to attending Bonanza 2020 in Brandon this summer! Thomas is most looking forward to showing a heifer from his own herd – Rolling Hills Gypsy 5G. He is also excited to connect with his friends he met last year and to meet new friends this year. Ivy is most excited to meet up with her friends she met last year, Lyla Harvie from Alberta and Jessica O’Connor from Saskatchewan.
Thomas and Ivy have a bright future in the Hereford breed and we are looking forward to watching them grow their herds in the future!

The journey of calving season began many months ago with careful selection of herd sires for the upcoming calving season. A lot of thought, time and money has gone into getting these cows pregnant and to the start of calving season. So, I thought this would be a good time for a quick review of the stages of parturition (calving) to help ensure we get healthy and live calves on the ground.
Stage 1:
The first stage of parturition is the dilation of the cervix. The cervix in the cow is normally closed tight right up until the start of the calving process when the cervical mucous plug is lost. Once the mucous plug is lost it will take anywhere from 2 to 24 hours for the cervix to become fully dilated. The average time is 2 to 6 hours. The hormone level of progesterone, that is required to maintain pregnancy, have declined which now allows the uterus to respond to the hormones that result in uterine contraction. The initial contractions are focused on dilating the cervix and there is minimal uterine contractions in this process. For the most part, this stage will go unnoticed by the producer but, there may be some behavioral changes such as isolation, nest building, excessive tail twitching and some mucous discharge. Checking for complete cervical dilation is important before intervening with manual extraction (pulling) of a calf.
Stage 2:
In stage two of parturition the delivery of the calf occurs. It begins with the entry of the fetal membranes and fetus into the birth canal and ends with the birth of the calf. This is the critical stage when a producer needs to be aware of how long the cow has been in active labor and at what point intervention is required. The older data suggests that the average length of time for stage two is 2 to 5 hours, however, newer data suggests that the average length for heifers is 1 hour and as little as 22 minutes for mature cows. These are the numbers I always keep track of when monitoring cows calving – if a heifer has been active labor (active labor being laying and pushing with good uterine
contractions) for 1 hour and cows for 30 minutes with no progress, it is time to intervene with a vaginal exam. If the vaginal exam determines the cow requires assistance and you have not made progress extracting the calf within 30 minutes contact your veterinarian for assistance.
Stage 3:
Stage three is the passage of the fetal membranes or placenta. In cattle this normally occurs within 8 to 12 hours after delivery of the calf. If the placenta has not been passed within 12 hours of calving it is considered a retained placenta. Manual removal is not recommended as can cause damage to the uterus which will impact future fertility. Contact your local veterinarian for recommended protocol for retained placenta.
And now that the calving was successful and we have a live calf there is one more critical point to remember – colostrum! For years it has been suggested that as long as the calf nursed within the first 12 hours it would receive adequate immune transfer and protection from the colostrum. Recent data suggests that colostrum should be ingested within the first 6 hours of birth. As a producer you should monitor the calf for: time to stand and time to nurse. Data indicates that if this time is longer than 2 to 3 hours the calf’s gut has already started to close which minimizes antibody absorption. Fresh colostrum is always the best, it contains all the antibodies and white blood cells a calf requires! Second best is frozen colostrum from your own herd or powdered colostrum. White blood cells in colostrum are destroyed by the freezing and pasteurization processes therefore it is important, if possible, that a calf receive some fresh colostrum in combination with either frozen or powdered colostrum. The Headstart brand of powdered colostrum is the best colostrum product available. If you are having health issues in your calves and you are concerned your calves are not receiving adequate colostrum at birth contact your veterinarian. Your veterinarian can run blood tests on your newborn calves to assess colostrum transfer.
Happy calving!!

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Steini Palsson in his 100th year, on January 6, 2020, at the Lundar Personal Care Home, with family at his side.
He was the beloved husband of the late Runa Palsson (nee Barnes, December 28, 2009). Loving father to his children, Joe (Peggy), Betty (Ken) and Patsy (Doug). Proud Afi to his grandchildren, Mike (Lynda), Coreena (Keith), Deb (Dan), Collin (Danielle), Rob (Laura), Brent (Jennifer), Chad (Jennifer) and 14 great-grandchildren. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews.
Steini was born August 20, 1920 at Stone Lake, Manitoba. He joined the army in 1942 where he served overseas in France with The Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders. He was wounded twice in action which finally sent him home in 1945. Although he received medals for his service, he suffered from the horrors of that war for most of his life.
Returning home in 1945 he married his sweetheart Runa and settled at farming his beloved Purebred Herefords and raising his family. He was a longtime member of the Lundar Bull Sale Committee and enjoyed this annual event right up until his final year.
He had a huge love for hockey. While in the army, Steini played with NHL legend Terry Reardon. He continued to play throughout his life and eventually moved on to coaching the Lundar Oldtimers.
Steini had a special love for country music and his home was always filled with it!
