Time for another issue of the Manitoba Hereford Connection Newsletter! Crazy how quickly the year slips by and we are already into another calving season and bull sale season! It is remarkable how successful the Hereford breed was in 2023, I can only imagine that 2024 will be even more incredible!
The MHA and MJHA are extremely excited to be hosting Bonanza 2024 - Herefords in the Wheat City - from July 24-27. Please consider sponsoring or volunteering at this remarkable event that gives our junior members a chance to grow their industry connections and build their love for the Hereford breed!
Once again, I would like to thank everyone that plays a role in putting the newsletter together. It is greatly appreciated to have the support from all involved.
Thanks,

Happy new year everyone! Hopefully the start of 2024 has been a good one. It’s exciting to see cattle prices start out strong and have been hitting all-time highs the last week. It’s a good feeling to have profitability in the cattle industry. Hopefully that will lead to good bull and replacements for sales this spring. The weather has sure been good for the feed stack but many will need some rain to bring on the grass for summer and fill their dugouts. We are busy planning for Bonanza in July from the 24th to the 27th. If you would like to help out give me a call and I am sure we can find a spot. I want to wish everyone good luck in calving season and with their bull sales or bull purchases this spring!
Till next time,
SteveHope everyone is having a good start to their calving season! The MJHA has been hard at work planning Bonanza 2024 as we are expecting lots of juniors and cattle. Keep an eye out on our social media for more updates to come! At the beginning of February our one delegate, Kennedy Manns, and our adult advisor, Steven Manns, traveled out to Calgary for the CJHA meetings and to talk more about Bonanza 2024! Wishing everyone good luck in their upcoming bull sales and everyone a healthy calf crop this spring!
IT’S OFFICIALLY THE BEST TIME OF YEAR! (At least for me, anyway!) ….CALVING TIME! And it is certainly with great anticipation that we all await the result of the genetic decisions we made about 285 days ago! Don’t be afraid to share photos of your Hereford and Hereford influence calves! The excitement surrounding Hereford genetics in Canada continues to grow as cattle prices have been strong and the market analysis looks to remain positive.
On December 12th & 13th 2023 I visited Calgary for board meetings. It was my first ever visit to the Calgary office, and I felt an overwhelming sense of nostalgia as I toured through the building. It was amazing to see all the Hereford archives, Hereford art and the large honor roll plaque in the entry...not to mention the big board room table! I also enjoyed meeting with the amazing ladies in the CHA office who continue to work with all our members with such courtesy and efficiency.
As many of you have probably noticed, the new Fee Schedule is now in effect. Please also be aware that interest will be charged on all outstanding accounts – if you do have questions, please reach out to our CHA office staff.
The CHA recognition team will be announcing new criteria regarding award selection for the Honour Roll, Next Gen Breeder and Trailblazer Awards. The new criteria will be outlined on the CHA website when it is available.
Delayed Blindness (DB) testing is now supported by Neogen Canada. You can review the current registry system for an update on known carriers and continue to monitor your genetic program to be aware
of potential carriers in your herd. This genetic defect is considered autosomal recessive, meaning an affected calf must have two carrier parents, so with responsible breeding decisions, this known defect can be managed successfully.
The CHA board of directors also continues to work on advancements and improvements to our registration system! The goal is to empower breeders with a tool which will make recording and analyzing your herd data much easier and efficient!
The Manitoba Junior Hereford Association will host Bonanza 2024 in Brandon from July 24th-27th. Please consider supporting this event as it plays a pivotal role in developing the future of Hereford loving youth! There are many ways to be involved whether it be financially or as a volunteer! Let’s make this a great event for all our juniors coming from across Canada!
Don’t forget, the Canadian Hereford Association Annual General Meeting will also take place at Bonanza on Friday, July 26th at 7:00pm CST.
Our next CHA Board meeting will be on March 13th via Zoom.
Good Luck to all our Hereford breeders with their bull sales this Spring! And…Happy Calving!

Robert (Bob) bought his first Hereford cows in 1970; they were silver standard breeding from Gus Konafel, Arborg, Manitoba. He registered his first calf in 1972; it was a Hereford calf sired by a Bill Cruise bull, tattoo LEA 5D.
Bob then added some heifers that came from the Cruises and two heifers from Joe Pollson. Bob then purchased cows, heifers and bulls from Hume Porteous, Crossfield, AB. Jumping ahead about 40 years, Bob started to use Polled Bulls from River Valley, Square D, Greenridge & Dorbay Herefords. Bob sells bulls out of the yard and at Lundar Bull Sale. Over the years, he has had Grand Champions & Reserve Champions at Lundar, missing only two sales in the last 50 years.
Jack was born in 1954, he started with a junior membership and then bought a life membership when his junior membership ran out. The herd started in 1933 by his grandparents, Robert and Vietta Cruise and then run by my parents William and Sigrun Cruise. It was carried on by Jack and his wife, Yvonne, and their children Shawn, Dennis and Kelly.
Jack has shown Hereford cattle across Manitoba and Canada. He had Grand Champion Hereford Female at the Toronto Royal two years in a row. Jack hasn’t been registering animals for a number of years now, but still uses Purebred Hereford bulls in his 200 head cowherd. Even though he has done some cross
At 83 years of age, Bob is not done yet. As long as he can still get up in the morning and get dressed there will always be Herefords running in the Truthwaite pastures. Congratulations Bob!
breeding in the last few years, Jack has always raised his own replacements. The entire herd could trace genetics back to those first three cows purchased by Grandad in 1933 and 1934. Congratulations Jack!
Martin operated as MNH Herefords at Border Meadows Farm at Sundown, MB. He purchased his first Hereford in 1968 at Krahn’s Hereford Farms Reduction Sale. Martin bought females and bulls from many operations across Manitoba. This helped to increase and improve his herd.
Martin has entered bulls at Douglas and Gunton Test Stations. His top success included having top group of four bulls two years in a row at Douglas Bull Test Station. Martin sold bulls and heifers to many commercial breeders over the years.
Martin sold his farm and herd in 1996 but kept a few animals since. He’s grateful to Lanard
Morley and his wife Bev started their registered Horned Hereford herd with a purchase of bred cows and heifers from Hays Hereford at Pipestone, MB. They then added females from the Dorrance Brothers and Savage Herefords to build their herd. Morley registered his first females in 1973.
Morley and Bev have sold females throughout Manitoba to many commercial producers. They have built relationships with many repeat buyers! Morley has participated in many Manitoba Southeast Zone Sales and the Red Carpet Sale in Saskatoon, SK. Many packages of females were also sold to Kazakhstan and Russia along with bulls to North Dakota. The Wilson family has also shown at Manitoba Ag Ex in Brandon, MB.
& Sophie Zushman, the Kopeechuks, Kevin & Jen Funk, and Doug Troop who have made it possible for him to keep some Herefords. Congratulations Martin!
When Morley and Bev retired, they sold the majority of their females to Kevin Dorrance of Wawota, SK. The cows returned to where the Wilson journey with Herefords began.

The farm is operated by Dean and his partner Cindy, Dean’s 3 kids and his dad who at 89 still comes to the farm daily to help out in the hectic season. Jayden is on the farm full time and looks after managing the cattle. His farm is called Crystal Creek Cattle Corp. His fiancée, Alyssa, works for CFIA and helps when she is home. Jenai is writing her thesis on “the economics of grazing perennial forages” at the U of M and is always around to help out with any operation. Joryn is finishing his degree in agriculture and if home helps out where needed. Cornie is the full time production assistant.
Although the seeded acreage isn’t large by today’s standards, the high diversity of crops grown, the seed plant and cover crop blending operation keeps the grain side of the farm interesting and active.
The cattle side of the operation has surpassed 400 cows, and includes backgrounding and a small yearling grazing aspect. The cow herd originated from the purebred and commercial Hereford herd that has
always been a part of the farm. The cows are pastured on owned and rented land that stretches 80 miles along highway 3. It is a strictly British herd with Angus, Shorthorn and anywhere from 6 to 12 Hereford bulls walking the pastures, most pastures have 2 bulls. There is always a straight Hereford cow pasture with a Hereford bull as they are trying to retain the Hereford advantage. This past year they started buying open Hereford females to accelerate the process of increasing the number of Hereford females in the herd.
Congratulations Dean & family!
The sibling duo of Chad and Kara Thompson operate Twin Creek Farms situated northeast of Belmont, MB. Both were active members of the Manitoba Junior Hereford Association and acquired their first purebred hefiers in their teenage years to show. This opportunity and guidance was provided to them by the Rankin family, showing alongside them at many local summer shows, junior shows and Bonanzas.
Now they run a herd consisting of 110 Hereford, Simmental and Angus crossbred owned and leased cows breeding with Hereford, Simmental and Angus bulls. Herefords have been apart of their breeding program over the years and will continue to be in the years ahead.
Congratulations Chad & Kara!

The MHA is pleased to award the 2024 Stewardship award to Keith Troop. Keith grew up with Herefords on the family farm, a tradition he and Cheryl have continued, since their marriage in the beginning of the 80’s on their farm.
Keith worked full time as well, starting with Manitoba Pool and then Bloom Fertilizer. Through working off the farm Keith had to be very organized in his life, which has been a real asset in his different roles with the MHA and other organizations. Keith is known for getting the job done by anyone who has worked with him, you can always count on Keith. During his different times on the MHA board, he worked with Bobby Miller, Jackie Mitchell, Don Guilford and many others. Keith has taken different roles with the board, Moe show chairperson, board representative with the Provincial Exhibition, 4-H director as well as Vice President, to name a few.
With 3 children becoming involve in 4-H, Keith took on a leadership role, when they became
Junior members, he became involved with Junior Bonanza through the years. Over time Keith has encouraged other young people to learn about the cattle and to get in the showring, one young lady who was a friend of one of his daughters has since become a nurse was telling Keith how much she enjoyed what she learned and still had her winning ribbon on display. He enjoys helping the youth through out the province. As a proud Grandpa he is helping and encouraging the next generation of his family. At most or all of the MHA functions Keith is there, a smile and a hello for everyone he meets and helping out where he is needed. Keith has a wealth of knowledge to be shared, works tirelessly to promote our breed and organization.
Thank you Keith for your dedication to the Hereford community and we look forward to your continued involvement.
Welcome to all who will be attending Bonanza in Brandon in July!
