What a year it has been! The days are getting shorter and the air is getting crisper. I hope everyone is ready for fall because it sure arrived in a hurry!
As we gear up for another fall sale run, I encourage everyone to take a look at those on offer throughout the newsletter. It looks like another exceptional offering put forward by breeders across Manitoba and Southeast Saskatchewan.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the Western National Hereford Show at Ag Ex in October.
Thanks, Sam

Hopefully everyone was able to gather up enough feed this summer with the little bit of rain we had. I assume everyone had enough grass to keep cattle out on pasture without having to feed cattle already. Now if freeze up can hold off for a few more weeks that would be great.
There was another great turnout at the MHA field day that was hosted by Twin View Polled Herefords this year. There was 130 entries and over 100 people in attendance. It was a great day; great people to visit with and it wasn’t too hot.
Ag Ex is being held October 25-28 in Brandon. We got the opportunity to host the Western National Hereford Show this year. I’m excited to see a great set of cattle on display this year with it being the 50th MB Ag Ex. The Good As Gold Sale is being held on December 1st in Brandon. I imagine there’s going to be a great selection of cattle on offer as always. Just a reminder for juniors that Bonanza is being held Brandon next year, so be sure to take a look at the offering.
I wish everyone a great fall ahead with fall shows, sales and harvest that will hopefully lead into a desirable winter.
A lot of juniors have started back at school and university this fall after an eventful summer traveling to Bonanza and other shows. This year’s Bonanza was held in Dundas, PEI, and we had three members attend and everyone did very well. Teegan Hyndman won Reserve Grand Champion Bred & Owned Heifer Calf and Reserve Champion Commercial Heifer Calf and Kennedy Manns won Yearling Heifer and Overall Champion Female in the Heifer Lottery Classes. Bonanza once again ended with a delicious meal and celebration of many memories made. Next year’s Bonanza is going to be held in Brandon, Manitoba, and the MJHA has been doing lots of fundraising so keep watching for more to come. Twin View Polled Herefords were the
lucky winners of the heifer calf raffle we did in August at the Manitoba Hereford Field Day. Special thank you to Manns Herefords for donating the heifer and thank you to everyone that bought tickets. Twin View Polled Herefords (Janelle Gulka) also organized a silent auction at the Field Day with all proceeds going to Bonanza 2024. Thank you to everyone who donated prizes for the auction and to Janelle for organizing! Looking forward, I hope that you’ve looked into entering some animals into the Brandon Ag Ex at the end of October. You can find more information on the provincial exhibition website. I hope everyone has good luck with their fall sales coming up!
As I sit to write this, the harvest dust is swirling, and I can hear the mooing of a recently weaned calf…. The temperatures are cooler now… and the change in the season is upon us.
And speaking of change…In December 2022, I was appointed as the new provincial Canadian Hereford Association director. Albert served the CHA for 9 years so it’d be impossible to assume I can match his contributions easily! Though there are some very big shoes to fill, I promise to do my best! Thank you to Albert and the entire Rimke family for their dedication in representing our province on both a provincial and national levels. I’d also like to thank the Hereford breeders who have reached out and offered their encouragement as I take on this exciting new role.
One of my first assignments as CHA director was to present the Manitoba Hereford Association nomination for the 2024 Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll. Congratulations to Rae & Stephanie Kopeechuk on receiving this well-deserved distinction! Official presentation will take place at the Western National Hereford Show on October 27th at Manitoba AgEx. I hope you will join us in celebrating this wonderful and aspiring family.
At the beginning of April I was also able to travel to the Lundar Bull Sale and present 50 year membership pins to two well known and respected breeders; Robert Truthwaite of Hodgson, MB & Jack Cruise of Lundar, MB. Thank you to you both for your continued involvement in the Hereford breed.
At the end of July I travelled to Prince Edward Island for my first (in person) board meeting. It was exciting to take part in conversations with different breeders who all bring different perspectives on the Hereford Breed. A large part of our meeting focused on the CHA’s “Better Your Beef” marketing strategy which strives to solidify the position of the Hereford breed in today’s cattle market. Promoting Herefords as being cost-efficient, broadening the strength of maternal traits within crossbreeding programs, and improving the Hereford
influence on carcass were a few of the key features discussed. The strategy hopes to make Hereford the breed of choice for upcoming generations of cattle producers. We also discussed an ongoing desire for phenotype collection and the use of genomic testing. The continued assessment of data among breeders and feedlots will be beneficial as producers make herd evaluations moving forward.
The CHA Board of Directors plans to meet again virtually in October and in Calgary in December.
I’d also like to congratulate our Manitoba Junior Hereford Association members who made the trip to Prince Edward Island. The dedication and commitment from you and your families was inspiring. DON’T FORGET - Manitoba will be hosting Bonanza in 2024 and along with it, the CHA Annual General Meeting! If you’re interested in contributing, whether it be physically or financially please reach out to the Bonanza Planning Committee.
I look forward to visiting with you at Ag Ex in October and at the Manitoba Good As Gold Sale in December.
JanelleThe Canadian Hereford Association congratulates Rae and Stephanie Kopeechuk on their induction into the Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll.
Rae and Stephanie both grew up on mixed farms with beef herds that consisted of Hereford, Angus and Shorthorn cattle. They helped their parents with daily chores and calving until leaving home. Stephanie grew up in the Lake Audy district of Manitoba which provides prime grazing for cattle with its bush and lakes. Rae grew up in the Hilltop district near Erickson in similar cattle country.
Stephanie lived in Winnipeg following graduation and was employed at the Workers Compensation Board. Rae was employed with Manitoba Hydro in Gillam, Winnipeg and finally Brandon. He retired in 2007. The couple were married in 1973 and moved to Brandon the following year. They moved to their present farm site in 1984 when it consisted of a house and a bin. Every fence post and building resulted from their hard work. The couple has three children Andrew, Stephan and Sarah.
RSK Farm’s initiation in the Hereford business started in 1993 when Stephanie and Rae purchased cattle from Elizabeth Acres, the Campbells of Cypress River and Happy Hollow Herefords, the Gibb brothers. Rae and Stephanie have both played a major role in developing the RSK breeding program within the registered herd but more importantly the commercial aspect of the RSK herd. That commercial program is second to none with most of the cows now being used as recipient females for the purebreds. The couple can both be seen at many Hereford sales throughout the year and always have input into buying and sales selection.
Stephanie is responsible for taking care of the paperwork for the farm and is a major part of the success of the operation, she tackles any job that needs to be done. She is the premier record keeper for RSK Farms which includes registrations, transfers, financials and Verified Beef program details. She was also a Hereford representative for the Douglas Bull Test Station. Stephanie was the secretary for the Manitoba Hereford Association for six years and has travelled to several Bonanzas with MB juniors to attend national meetings. While on the MHA Board she obtained sponsorship and prizes for the MB Ag Ex show as well as MHA Field Days including two that were hosted at RSK. She was recognized for her contribution to Manitoba Herefords with the MHA Stewardship Award in 2020.
Both Rae and Stephanie continue to be active at RSK. They have been very involved with the RSK Farms/Rideau Angus Farm Elite Genetics bull and female sales. They are
never far away when it comes to helping organize the sales whether it is helping with the meal, penning, clipping, picturing or videoing – it couldn’t be done without them!
Community service is second nature to this couple. Stephanie was secretary for the Brandon Twins and Triplets Club, secretary and Sunday School Teacher for the Douglas United Church, a board member of the Douglas Ladies Curling Club. Rae served on the Board of Directors for the Manitoba Agricultural Museum and was a trustee for Douglas United Church. Each year a percentage of RSK beef sales is donated to the Douglas Community Recreation Association.
Off farm Stephanie was a Customer Service Manager for 13 years at Walmart. Rae was the yard crew supervisor for 16 years at MB Hydro overseeing the majority of coal sales and receiving.
Over the years RSK has had a commanding showring presence and the operation has had many divisional and overall champions at the Manitoba Ag Ex and Canadian Western Agribition. In 2021 RSK Farms sold the all-time Canadian High Selling Spring Yearling Bull: RSK SCK 7615 Double Down 30H.
Rae and Stephanie supported their children in whatever they chose to be involved in. They were involved with the Carberry 4-H Beef Club and were an active part of the CJHA when their children were active in Juniors.
They were proud to host the 2012 World Hereford Conference Post tour and hosted the New Zealand Ag Tour in 2014. Embryo sales from RSK have been global and as a result RSK genetics are found in Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Wales. Live cattle have been sent to Russia and Kazakhstan with Exports International.
In 30 years, Rae and Stephanie have watched the growth of their Hereford operation from modest beginnings to the internationally recognized program it is today.
Congratulations to Emma Fox on being a Recipeint of the CJHA KGF Future of the Breed Scholarship.
Emma is a fifth generation Hereford breeder, aiming to pursue an education to excel in the animal sciences, with focus on meat science, animal nutrition, genetics, sustainable land use and animal rearing. Emma will be attending Oklahoma State University majoring in Animal Science. In her own words, Emma says, “ I know where my cattle roots originated and am deeply compelled to reciprocate any knowledge gained to the breed that has given my family so much.” Congratulations Emma!
