From the Editor

Wow, was I glad to see an end to 2020 and to welcome in a new year.

I would like to take the time to congratulate everyone on all their accomplishments in 2020. It was another one for the record books and all breeders should be proud of their success!

Calving season is well underway for some or just getting started for others. This is my favourite time of the year and to see the young calves that were planned last spring hit the ground is an accomplishment in itself.

I would like to thank everyone that contributes to the MHA Hereford Connection Newsletter. Your feedback and advertisements are greatly appreciated. I enjoy working on the newsletter and it is a privilege to have so many supporting me!

I would like to wish everyone all the best in 2021 and here’s to hoping that it is better than the last!

Thanks, Sam

MHA President’s Report - Steven Manns

I hope 2021 finds everyone in good health and good spirits. This last year has been a very trying year for all of us. I am hoping we can get back to doing all the things we enjoy such as showing our beloved cattle.

MHA is planning on having a MOE Show in Lundar this year on June 12. We will once again be having a Field Day at Keith Troop’s in late August. The juniors are starting to plan for Bonanza again for this summer.

Hopefully this warm weather will stick around for the breeders that are calving. Good luck to everyone in calving season and with all your plans for the year. Hope to see everyone this summer.

MJHA Report - Kennedy Manns

It’s been a crazy year and I hope everyone is healthy and safe. The MJHA has been working on and is still planning on hopefully hosting Bonanza here in Brandon if COVID-19 allows. I know COVID has been hard on everyone, especially for those who haven’t been able to sell their cattle due to factories being shut down. I hope everyone has good luck with their calving season and good luck with their upcoming bull sales in the spring.

From the CHA Office

DNA

The lab will now be assessing a fee for loose hair samples received in hair sample envelopes. To avoid these new charges, please be sure to TAPE the hair shafts directly to your DNA application, leaving the roots accessible.

Don’t get caught waiting for DNA!

If you’ve got animals entered in sales in the new year, collect those DNA samples for any ETs, sires or ‘dams of AI sires’ right away! Be sure to allow a minimum of 4 weeks at the lab for DNA results. Applications are easily available through your online log-in under “Requests”. You can print these immediately to send with the samples!

• All natural sires and donor dams require DNA on file

• All AI sires must be fully parentage verified to both parents

Tattoos

Take a look in the ears. All animals must have a clear and distinct tattoo.

If you have a tattoo that is not satisfactory, contact the CHA office for Permission to Re-tattoo. Do not add to or alter a tattoo without contacting the CHA office.

The Tattoo Year Letter for 2021 is “J”

CHA Report - Albert Rimke

Hi Everyone, these reports seem to be harder and harder to write, all the time. The last couple of director’s meetings were zoom meetings, which I guess is the norm for now, but I sure enjoy the in-person meetings a lot more.

As far as the CHA goes, we have been having quite a few meetings on developing a new Strategic Marketing Plan. We have come up with 6 must win battles:

1. BE a maternal ingredient of choice for progressive crossbreeding programs

2. IMPROVE Herefords’ influence in producing a quality carcass

3. CONNECT as a breed choice for upcoming generations of cattle producers

4. AFFIRM Hereford as the most cost-effective beef breed in Canada

5. DISPEL the image of Hereford as yesterday’s breed in Canada

6. EMPOWER Hereford breeders to commit to a coherent and consistent strategy that is complementary to the commercial industry.

We have a separate committee set up for each one, with the breeders from across Canada on each committee. We have had 1-2 meetings with each committee so far and hope that with another couple of meetings we can make a new S.M.P. I have sat in on all these meetings and I am very impressed with the people, the chairs have selected and the discussions that have been had so far. Hopefully by spring we will have a plan in place to help move the breed forward.

I have mentioned before about a new online registry program, but with some glitches, this may not be in the works for quite a while, unfortunately.

Not sure how many of the membership watches the Cowboy Channel but we will be advertising on it shortly for a six-month trial, so watch for them coming soon.

Financially the Association is doing well. We should show quite a profit for this year. We have had a few staffing changes over the last month and have hired a couple of new staff, so please bear with them until they have learned the basics, they will both be taught the complete package from registration to DNA to transfers and everything in between.

The show committee has had a couple of meetings also with very few changes in the rules, hopefully the show circuit is back to normal in 2021.

Also staring December 21, 2020 you can MD test your cattle without the full parentage test thus saving the cost if you wish to just cull the animals that are positive.

This being my last report as CHA president I would like to thank everyone that supported me these last two years. Especially my family for being there when I was away or on one of the many zoom meetings. These last two years have been very enjoyable meeting new breeders and travelling to other parts of the world, making new friends and seeing some wonderful country! Thank you again!

All the best with calving and bull sales.

2021 MHA Stewardship Award - Stephanie Kopeechuk

Stephanie grew up on a mixed farm in the Erickson area. In 1984 Stephanie and Ray purchased their present location. The journey into the Hereford business was started in 1993 when they purchased cattle from Elizabeth Acres, the Campbells of Cypress River, and Happy Hollow Herefords, the Gibb Brothers.

Over the years Stephanie has supported her family in whatever they chose to be involved in. Took care of the paperwork for the farm and is a major part of the success of their operation, doing any job that is needed to be done.

In 2007 Stephanie took on the job of secretary of the MHA, and what a job she did. In January of 2013, she chose to step down as she felt it was time for someone else. During her tenure she kept amazing records, every detail taken care of. She also

kept everything organized for the Manitoba Hereford Shows. In 2012, she and the family hosted the MHA Field Day, following the World Hereford Tour, as well as other events over time.

Through the years Stephanie has also worked off the farm, still keeping up with all she does on farm, it was always great to catch up with her at Walmart and have a visit and talk about the cattle. Stephanie always has a smile and a hello for everyone she meets, she has a fountain of information she is willing share, and is always busy taking care of the people she loves and their cattle.

The MHA are pleased to present Stephanie with the 2021 Stewardship Award in recognition for all she has done and continues to do for the Hereford Breed.

2021 Commercial Breeder of the Year - DWT Polled Herefords

David Irwin developed an admiration for the Hereford breed from the herd his dad had and dreamt of owning his own. When Dave was 12 years old, this dream came true when he purchased his first heifer calf from Jack Fraser from Beulah, Manitoba. His herd grew in size to include genetics from Til-Toba Polled Herefords, Mil-Wray Polled Herefords, Square D Polled Herefords, and various breeders from Manitoba and Saskatchewan. There have always been purebred Hereford bulls used, with half the herd purebred females and the other half commercial females. What really attracted Dave to the Hereford breed was the quietness and docility of the animal as well as the efficiency of the Hereford to convert grass to pounds. Dave always like the looks of a herd of Herefords on grass in the summertime. He also sees the value of the black baldie cow as he likes to maintain some in the herd.

David calves the cows in March and April with calves going to market in late October and November. The steer calves are marketed through the auction mart, usually topping the market while some of the females are offered by private treaty. Dave keeps a few to help maintain his numbers as well as adding new genetics yearly. Dave has also had females in the MHA Good as Gold Sale and the Moosomin Hereford Sale when it was running. The highlight for Dave has been being able to send some heifers to Kazakhstan.

Dave wants to thank Ken, Judy, Wanda, and the late Don Wray, Allan and Bonnie Woodhouse and Kevin and Holly Hyndman for the support over the years. The Wray families have always been a source of great guidance as well as friends, not only with cattle but in life.

Calf Health

As I write this our beautiful Winter weather, we had been having here in Manitoba has changed dramatically. For the last week we have been under an extreme cold warning with wind chills approaching the -50C for several nights. When baby calves arrive in this kind of weather it is even more crucial, they get off to a good start in the first hours of life.

And the first hurdle these calves need to do successfully is get up and nurse. COLOSTRUM, COLOSTRUM, COLOSTRM!! I cannot emphasize enough the importance that a calf receives an adequate amount of good quality colostrum in a timely fashion. Colostrum is critical in helping to keep calves healthy in the first 8 weeks of life; aiding in the prevention of pneumonia and scours. When I graduated from Veterinary College 20 years ago, I was taught that as long as calves suck within 12 hours they will get adequate colostrum transfer. A lot of research has been done over the last several years regarding colostrum and it is now recommended that calves receive colostrum within the first 2-3 hours of life. After 3 hours there will be some degree of failure of passive transfer. By 6 hours post delivery a calf is only able to absorb approximately 50% of the antibodies in colostrum. Also, as time passes without a calf nursing, the quality of the colostrum in the cow decreases as well. For every hour that a cow is not nursed post calving she loses 2-3% of colostral quality per hour. So, keep that in mind if you have a cow with lots of milk to stock up your freezer supply of colostrum. The sooner you milk her, the better the colostrum. Time to stand = time to nurse is a tool you as a producer, can use to assess if your calves are receiving colostrum in appropriate time.

After colostrum, there are other tools we can utilize to help keep calves healthy. For calves born in early winter, it is a long time before these calves get to grass, so often we need to utilize all the tools we have available to keep them healthy. These include intranasal vaccines, coccidiosis preventatives and vitamin/mineral injections.

There are two intranasal vaccines that are currently available. One provides protection against viral pneumonia (Inforce – Zoetis Animal Health) and the other bacterial pneumonia (Once PMH – Merck Animal Health). And the intranasal route of administration stimulates an arm of the calf’s immune system that allows it to still be effective in the face of the good colostrum the calf has just received from the cow.

Coccidiosis is a parasite that causes bloody diarrhea in calves that are greater than 3 weeks of age. Every farm that treats 1 or 2 calves with clinical coccidosis (visible bloody diarrhea) will have a significant number of calves that are subclinical. As a producer you will not treat these calves but the affected growth rate of these calves will negatively affect weaning weights in the fall. There is a licensed product available to prevent coccidiosis – Baycox (Elanco Animal Health). My husband maintains this is the “best money we have ever spent on our cattle!”

If your cows have been on a proper vitamin/mineral supplementation program through out the winter I do not believe it is necessary that all calves receive an injection of vitamin/minerals at birth. However, if supplementation has not been adequate, I would recommend calves receive at least a VitaminE/Selenium injection at birth.

Word From The Vet 9

2020 Commercial Breeder of the Year - Alvis Family

Trevor Alvis and family south of Boissevain, Manitoba were the 2020 recipients of the Manitoba Hereford Association’s Commercial Producer of the Year award. With deep roots in the Manitoba Hereford industry, Trevor switched his purebred herd to a commercial Hereford operation after the devastating impact of BSE in 2003. Still running a straight bred Hereford program, he phased out the purebred side of the business and continues to emphasize the fundamentals of a practical breeding program.

His dad first bought his purebred Herefords in 1946 and maintained a purebred herd along with mom Doreen. Trevor joined the family operation in the early 1990s and started buying some polled genetics. Polled Herefords were easier to find in Manitoba although he still thinks Horned cows are a little bigger and earlier maturing. “I either like a bull or I don’t, the horns don’t enter into it and some of the best calves we’ve had have been out-cross horned by polled calves.”

He fondly recalls the horn brands on the cows when he was a kid and they still tattoo all of their calves as a means of permanent identification. “We pasture enough cattle around the countryside and if there is ever a problem we have proof, it’s pretty handy to have something that’s permanent that’s for sure.”

Calving begins in early March and they usually have about 100 calves in the first 30 days. “It’s kind of hectic for a month, but they start slowing down and we will finish up with four or five calves in June.” March calving in Manitoba can be a bit challenging, so the cows are kept in corrals and they use a modified horse barn that holds about 15 cows at night. During the busiest days pairs will get rotated through the system fairly quickly, but the calves make good use of calf huts.

About 400 acres of hay is put up in the summer for winter feed and they get over it once or twice depending on the rain. Moisture was scarce the summer of 2020. “We’ve culled a little harder this year than most years and we may have to cull a little more,” he admitted.

Trevor still farms with his mom Doreen who still has cattle. His parents always backgrounded their calves,

but again with the dry conditions they will be selling calves earlier in the new year than they normally would.

The Alvis’ raise their own replacement females. “We usually try to keep the top 20 percent.” The rest of the heifers have been sold in a market that Trevor describes as hit and miss. “One year you put them online and they sell quickly, the next year nobody will phone.” In the past they’ve sold heifers to Winnipeg and as far away as Swan River.

Heartland Livestock at Brandon is where Trevor markets his animals, and it is there that he has got to know some of the buyers. “They know who I am, and I can represent the cattle a little bit to the buyers I talk to.” He modestly acknowledges that they are good saleable cattle.

A practical cowherd is important to this commercial cattleman. He wants a cow that will do her job. “I don’t want to be involved with your life and you don’t need to be involved with mine!” If a cow can’t take care of business on her own, he figures she can find somewhere else to live. He culls hard for udders and if a cow has bad feet he believes the best place to trim them is at the packing plant!

This applies to disposition also. “If a cow has an attitude, she gets one shot and she’s gone, there are no second chances.” Trevor’s’ dad was the same, he always told him that in the time you chase one wild cow you can look after two quiet ones. Obviously, a lesson that he took to heart. Trevor is proud that he can walk around his cows in a 250 or 300 acre pasture in the summertime and get a good look at them because they are so quiet. “It is really enjoyable when they are that quiet.”

The cows run in hilly country with lots of bush and trees to deal with. Trevor calls it good cow country and he’s still able to rent enough hay and pasture land in the area. His pastures are pretty spread out, so checking cows is pretty time consuming. Summer water is from either a creek, big slough or dugout and the cows stay out on pasture as long as possible. They move home to graze on the hayfields and will stay on those as long as there is feed, or the snow doesn’t get too deep.

10

They do raise some of their own bulls and will buy by private treaty or at auction including the Manitoba Hereford Association’s Good as Gold Sale. When it comes to bull buying, “I guess I’m picky,” he says, “when we were in the purebred business, we didn’t keep many bulls, but everything needed to be right on them and in the background on them.” He still chooses bulls based on the cow family behind them.

“I look at the numbers, but I am also looking for things that aren’t in the numbers, looking more at the body and the build.” He looks at birthweight and milk, but wants to know what kind of udders are producing that milk.

What is going to make you money in the cow business, he emphasizes, is the cows. “If you have great

big show cows that need a grain pail in a commercial cowherd, they’re not going to make you any money, plain and simple!” Ideal cow size in this herd would be a 1,300 to 1,400 pound cow that can raise a 600 pound calf on her own.

Trevor’s mom, Doreen, still helps on the farm. Wife Laura and youngest daughter Delaney, who loves the cows, pitch in to help with the cattle chores. Son Glenn lives in Calgary and daughter Candace lives in Wadena, Saskatchewan.

A practical cattleman, Trevor Alvis has high expectations of his cows and has worked hard to make them an efficient, hard working group that exemplify the maternal strengths of the Hereford breed. A worthy recipient of the 2020 Commercial Producer award from the Manitoba Hereford Association.

Junior Spotlight Alexa, Jace & Cash Guilford

We are pleased to introduce you to the future of the Manitoba Hereford breed, Alexa, Jace and Cash Guilford – the next generation of Guildford Farms.

The Guilford family farm was started by Alexa, Jace and Cash’s great great grandfather, John in 1903, after he immigrated to Canada from England in 1902. He bought his first Hereford heifers in 1925, starting the tradition of raising Hereford cattle. Frank and Kae, Alexa, Jace and Cash’s great grandparents, continued raising Herefords to carry on the tradition which then lead to passing on the tradition to Dave and Carol, the kid’s grandparents.

Dave and Carol got married in 1968 and later had two children, Cynthia and Rodney who were both heavily involved in the day to day

operation of Guilford Farms. Rod (Alexa, Jace and Cash’s dad) graduated from NDSU with a degree in animal science in Fargo, North Dakota later returning to the farm to raise Hereford cattle with his parents.

In 2009 Rod with the help of his wife Kristi started Xports International Inc., a livestock marketing company that exports cattle to other countries in the world. Since then, they have exported over 5000 head of cattle and continue to do consulting work. These new ventures started to take quite a bit of Rod’s time so the decision was made to sell a good portion of the farm in 2010, and cut back to about 200 cows, which is where the herd is at present. Alexa, Jace and Cash now have Hereford cattle of their own and are the 5th generation of Guilford’s to raise purebred Hereford cattle.

14

Alexa is 16 years old and is currently in grade 11 at Pilot Mound Collegiate Institute. She enjoys softball, horseback riding, music, volleyball, reading and watersports. Jace is 14 years old and is in grade nine at Pilot Mount Collegiate Institute. His hobbies include curling, music, umpiring, golf, basketball and watersports. Cash is 10 years old and is in grade 5 at Thomas Greenway Middle School in Crystal City. He enjoys drama, rec hockey, piano, LEGO and reading!

The Guilford kids enjoy all aspects of the farm and are involved in the day to day operation. Jace and Alexa have been a member of the Clearwater 4-H Club for the past seven years and this year will be Cash’s first year in 4-H. Alexa loves showing cattle! She loves how rewarding it is and really enjoys meeting new people! She is

hopeful to attend Bonanza 2021 in Brandon depending on her competitive softball schedule.

Alexa and Jace are both currently building their own herds. Alexa’s favourite heifer is 43H – she has great confirmation and is a nice showy heifer. Jace just recently purchased a new bred heifer from AM Ranching, the Rimke family, and he is looking forward to bringing in new bloodlines and seeing what her calf will be like!

Alexa, Jace and Cash all have a bright future in the Hereford breed and we are looking forward to watching them grow their herds in the future!

Women in the Hereford Breed Janelle Gulka

It all stated in 1941 when Janelle’s grandfather purchased the home quarter. Jump a few years forward to 1972… this is when Janelle’s parents, Ernie and Marge moved onto the farm. They started their family in 1973, with twin boys, Tom and Tim (this is where the farm name “Twin View” came from). The Hereford herd, Twin View Polled Herefords, started in 1974 when Ernie purchased heifers from Whitegate Polled Herefords and Vern Kartanson. Janelle hit the scene in 1976 and this is where it all began!

Growing up, Janelle was actively involved in the day to day operation. Like she said “any kid growing up on the farm, your involvement just “happens” – doing chores and contributing to the day to day is just part of life.” As a kid, Janelle was a member of the Manitoba and Canadian Junior Hereford Associations and 4-H. She enjoyed attending Bonanza and local fairs throughout her childhood!

Eventually Janelle went off to college in North Dakota on a volleyball scholarship. She lived there for 8 years then moved to Alberta in 2003. This is where she met her soulmate, Kenny, and they got married in 2004. While living in Alberta, she found herself coming home often, always enjoying her time on the farm. Her interest in the farm re-ignited when her parents were preparing for their production sale in 2009. Kenny was working extended hours away from home, so Janelle would venture back to Manitoba to help with calving, haying, sale prep, etc. While home helping with sale prep, Janelle fell in love with one dark, sleek heifer that was in the sale that she really didn’t want her parents to sell… Janelle ended up “getting her back” and the rest is history! Janelle’s herd began to grow in Manitoba and her and Kenny made the decision to move to the farm, seven miles west of Strathclair, MB in 2010. Today, they current farm 160 cow/calf pairs and 76 replacement heifers as well as 3000 acres of land.

Along with Janelle’s full-time job on the farm, she also currently works full time from her home office as a web designer for a company based in Atlanta, Georgia. Her primary role is the development of websites for local governments and elected officials. On the farm, Janelle and Kenny work together daily, but the decision making has been split up. Kenny looks after the grain side of things and Janelle looks after the cattle and breeding program. All decisions are made as a partnership and Ernie & Marge still play a vital role in keeping things going. Janelle loves calving season, nothing beats seeing calves being born and watching them grow. The farm requires a lot of work, but they wouldn’t do it if they didn’t love it!

Ernie and Marge never focused on the show scene, however, Janelle’s favorite success is seeing her dad’s face after his heifer calf won her class at Agribition. They found it rewarding knowing that they had home raised cattle that could be competitive in the show ring too. In 2018, Twin View Polled Herefords won Premier Breeder and Exhibitor at Manitoba Ag Ex, and Premier Breeder again in 2019. Janelle says, the best accomplishment is when they can sell cattle off the farm and the buyers are happy. Sharing their pedigrees with other breeders and watching those genetics work for other people is really what it’s all about.

Janelle is a strong leader in the agriculture industry and a role model to many. When asked “what is one thing you wish young girls knew when seeking out to accomplish their dream of taking over the family farm,” she responded with this:

“Don’t be scared to ask questions! I think as women (maybe some men too) we have a huge fear of failure. I know when making some decisions, I’ve lost a lot of sleep wondering “what ifs” and if it doesn’t work out “then what.” But the thing is… things do work out

one way or the other… and you can’t achieve anything if you don’t try. There are a lot of resources out there for assistance in all aspects of farming. Doing the work is one thing, but there are also a lot of educational, financial and emotional resources available too.

“I’d say my main advice is: get dirty. Drive the tractor, pull the calf, learn the medications, take the lead! You don’t always have to be the tail twister! Most of the time it’s easier and cleaner (at the front of the cow anyway!) Anyone can sling grain and open gates! Have an opinion, trust your gut and own it - both the successes and the failures. Returning to the Hereford industry has been a really rewarding chapter in my adult life, and it was intimidating at first. However, I’ve felt that the more open I am and the more questions I ask, most cattlemen and women are more than happy

to share their advice or experiences.

“I was lucky to have the strong foundation of my parent’s herd to “start off with” and with that I have enjoyed putting my own spin on the Twin View program. Their encouragement has meant a lot as we continue to maintain the qualities that have always been important in our herd… just maybe now with a little bit more pigment!”

Janelle is leading the way for not only young women in agriculture, but men too. She is a strong example of what hard work, determination and commitment are! We are pleased to have such a role model in the Manitoba Hereford Association!

Gail Kartanson

Left to mourn her death is her husband, Vern Kartanson, their 3 children, David Bruce (Joan), Jeffery Scott, and Nancy Joy, 3 amazing grandchildren that she loved dearly, Sarah Marie (Chris), Tyra Justine (Noah), and Owen Matthew. Gail, to say the least, was a warrior, overcoming obstacle after obstacle but always came out with a smile, offering a kind gesture to anyone that needed it. She was liked by all and loved by so many.

Kenneth Frank Guilford

He will be missed by his three sons, Ken (Alison), Michael and Donnie, his six grandchildren, and his siblings Jean (Dale) McKenzie, Dave (Carol) Guilford, Don (Diane) Guilford, Diane Guilford, Robert (Minnie) Guilford and many nieces and nephews. Ken is predeceased by his parents, Frank and Kae Guilford and his niece, Cynthia Mayo. Ken liked to live life to the fullest and he loved talking to people. Ken was loved deeply by his children and his siblings and he will always be in our hearts.
