Fall 2024

From the Editor

I am once again blown away by the teamwork that the Manitoba Hereford Association has. This summer, the MHA and MJHA hosted the National Junior Hereford Show, Bonanza in Brandon, MB. There were many familiar faces as we all came together and rallied through a busy week encouraging and supporting the Junior Hereford program. It was a great week for all involved and I am extremely excited to watch my daughter grow in this organization and attend many bonanzas in the future.

I am heart broken to hear the news of the passing of Dean Jago, our Sales Representative at Leech Group. Dean was very supportive of the Hereford Breed. I will miss him dearly.

Once again, thank you for your support towards the Hereford Newsletter.

Thanks,

MHA Report - Steven Manns

Well, it’s hard to believe it’s fall already. Where did Summer go? It sure feels like it flew by. Saying that, it sure was a fun packed summer for the MHA with us hosting bonanza this year. I feel it was an outstanding event. It was taken in by all the provinces in Canada with over 200 head of the best Hereford cattle the juniors have. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped put on this event. You guys all did an amazing job. Plus, a big thank you to all the kids and parents for coming and making it such a great success.

It has been a good year for most of us with rain and lots of pasture. This fall looks to be very exciting

with record calf prices. Hopefully everyone has a good sale this fall.

Enclosing I hope to see you all this fall at some of the fall female sales or Ag Ex. Till next time, take care of everyone and Merry Christmas.

Thanks, Steve

MJHA Report - Kennedy Manns

Hey everyone! The MJHA has had a busy summer with us being the host province for the 2024 Bonanza! We had such a great turnout and it was nice to see so many familiar faces as well as some new faces! As the summer is starting to fade into fall the Manitoba hereford juniors are starting on their fall show prep and I can’t wait to see you all at this years shows! Happy harvest!

CHA Report - Janelle Gulka

It feels and sounds like Fall—the rumble of combines, the swirl of dust in the air, and the calls of cows and recently weaned calves searching for their mothers. Ideally, these familiar sounds will translate into financial returns, helping to sustain our confidence in agriculture for another year!

Spring started on a high note with successful bull sales across Manitoba. I had the chance to attend sales in Douglas, Lundar, and Neepawa, where the results were strong and consistent. The stands were packed, and Hereford bulls found new homes in a variety of programs across Canada and the USA. Additionally, most of us enjoyed adequate moisture for favorable pasture growth, resulting in lush green grass and contented cows.

As many of you know, Bonanza took place in Manitoba this past July. The event benefited from a dedicated planning committee and a strong group of volunteers who worked tirelessly to ensure the events success. Bonanza was well-attended both in person and online and seeing the passion of young cattle enthusiasts is a reassuring sign for the future of the breed. Congratulations to everyone involved, and a special thanks to all the sponsors for their valued contributions.

The Canadian Hereford Association Annual General Meeting took place at Bonanza in Brandon on July 26th. The discussions centered on the Hereford breed and its market position, with a primary focus on overcoming the ongoing challenges of securing the breed’s niche in the beef industry. Engaging in this proactive dialogue is vital for refining strategies and maintaining the breed’s success and relevance. The association’s “Better Your Beef” marketing strategy will be pivotal in developing effective methods and ensuring long-term success for Hereford genetics.

The introduction of the “P” designations on pedigrees has generated varied feedback. While some responses have been positive, others have been less so. It’s important to remember that the “P” stands for potential, serving as a guide for making responsible breed-

ing decisions. Identifying potential carriers and testing early can help you make informed decisions for your herd. The Canadian Hereford Association is considering alternative ways to present genetic carriers and potential carriers on pedigrees.

At the CHA AGM, we were pleased to induct Jackie and Wally Mitchell of Roselawn Polled Herefords into the Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll. This recognition celebrates their dedication and significant contributions to the Hereford community.

The association is also focused on enhancing its digital platforms. The new “Hereford 365” registry system will replace the current registry, streamlining processes like calf registration, animal transfers, and performance report submissions. Additionally, the “Hereford X” herd management tracking system is being developed to monitor both commercial and purebred cattle, track animal health and breeding, and will integrate with the CHA registry system. For more information about these advancements, please feel free to reach out or contact the Canadian Hereford Association by email at info@hereford.ca or by phone at 403275-2662!

Thank you to all who have shared your thoughts and experiences with me. I encourage anyone with concerns or comments to reach out so that your perspectives can be communicated to the association.

Remember, “The power of speaking out is in the fact that it can inspire others to do the same.”

I look forward to seeing everyone at the shows and sales this Fall.

CHA Honour Roll - Wally & Jackie Mitchell

The Canadian Hereford Association congratulates Wally and Jackie Mitchell on their induction into the Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll.

Wally’s love of farming began at a very young age and has continued to this day. His first memories include driving the Cockshutt tractor back up to the yard at the tender age of four. He remembers sitting in the tractor seat, his Dad putting it in low gear and away he went! His mother was in quite a tizzy when she saw him coming!

Wally had been involved in the 4-H program since he was 9, belonging to Roland 4-H Beef Club, taking a peewee calf to Rally Day that first year in 1964. Wally remained in the Beef club until he was 18, making many friends and lifelong acquaintances along the way.

Wally married Jackie in 1990 and although Jackie had never had anything to do with a cow in her life prior to that point, she soon became actively involved in the cattle industry, helping at Manitoba Livestock Expo and various MOE shows, as well as helping with the show cattle. In the mid-1990’s, she joined the Manitoba Hereford Association acting as Secretary-Treasurer for several years and later became the first woman in Canada to be president of a Provincial Hereford Association.

Jackie also sat on planning committees for Bonanza, Manitoba Livestock Expo and various MOE shows. She has been actively involved in three Hereford Bonanzas during the past 20 years. Jackie continues to be involved in her community. She is very proud to be the Treasurer for their local community Foundation, which boasts a value of almost nine million dollars and grants over $300,000 per year.

She was the editor of the Manitoba Hereford Newsletter and manager of the MHA Good as Gold Sale for ten years. Outside her Hereford activities she is also the Treasurer for the local area Donor’s Choice program and assists with bookkeeping duties at the Royal Canadian Legion and the Royal Legion Plaza – a 55 plus rental unit in Killarney.

Wally and Jackie have two children, Kailey and Brady and they both joined the 4-H beef club as soon as they were old enough. Wally became a leader and remained so for the next 19 years. Sharing his love of beef cattle has always been a passion of Wally’s and he joined the Killarney Ag Society so that he could help bring cattle shows back to the local fair. He has remained an active participant in the Ag Society for the past 35 years, 25 years of which he served as president.

The Mitchell family, under the name of Roselawn Polled Herefords, have also been very active in the Manitoba Hereford Association, and in 2018 they received their 100year pin from the Canadian Hereford Association.

Two of Wally’s favorite accomplishments that he is most proud of are winning Reserve Champion Hereford Female at Toronto Royal Winter Fair in 1976 and Reserve Champion Hereford Steer in 1977. Wally and family have also showed for many years at Brandon’s Ag Ex, Canadian Western Agribition, Hereford field days, and several local fairs around the province. Summer holidays inevitably included cattle shows where wonderful lifelong friendships and memories were made.

They have sold cattle at the Agribition Sale, Manitoba Good as Gold Sale, and for the past 25 years, in the fall production sale of Blair Athol/Haroldsons and Friends. Over the years, he has sold purebred and commercial cattle locally and abroad, exporting cattle to Europe, Russia, Mexico and the U.S.

Wally enjoys curling in winter and golf in summer and spending time with their two grandchildren, Logan and Hannah.

Wally and his wife Jackie continue to operate a purebred Hereford cattle herd and grain farm north of Killarney, Manitoba. In 2024, it will be their 51st crop year.

In Memory of Dean Jago

I am sure many of you knew Dean Jago, the MHA Hereford Connection Sales Representative at Leech Group. Dean has passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on Saturday, September 21, 2024. Dean played an important role in the Hereford Connection, ensuring it was printed and sent out to all breeders in a timely manner. Dean attended Bonanza this past summer, and you would often see him in the barns at Ag Ex or at the Good as Gold Sale.

In Brandon, Manitoba, Dean Jago was well-liked for his kindness and commitment to his work as a sales representative at Leech Group. His clientele valued not only his professionalism but also the sincere concern he displayed in each and every one of their interactions. As their point of contact, Dean made them feel important and understood since they knew he would always be there to see to it that their requirements were satisfied.

Relative to Reston, Manitoba, with pride, Dean completed his studies at Reston Collegiate Institute in 1982. His quest for more knowledge sent him to Calgary’s Mount Royal College, where he refined his abilities and stoked his desire to serve people even more.

Aside from his career, Dean was a loving spouse to Janet Jago, and the two of them made a cosy and inviting household. He had a natural capacity to relate to people and give them a sense of genuine importance. Whether he was helping customers or just hanging out with friends, Dean’s generosity and compassion had a lasting impression on everyone he came into contact with.

Dean will be missed by many breeders across the Hereford Association. We send our condolences to his family and loved ones.
