UNIVERSITY OF TWENTE

GET OFF TO A FLYING START

First, let me say that we are delighted to welcome you to our campus in August. We realise very well that for you, this may be the start of a whole new adventure or maybe even a new phase of your life. We are looking forward to being part of that.

In the coming period, we hope to get to know you better, and vice versa. A good start will help you settle in Enschede as quickly as possible. Meeting new friends, making your new leisure activities your own and, of course, not unimportantly, immersing yourself in the content of one of our study programmes. I recommend using the Kick-in period to get acquainted with everything that studying and living in Twente and on our campus has to offer you.

Like much at our university, the Kick-In is organised entirely by students. They are given the responsibility and space to do so, knowing that with their own experience still fresh in their minds, they know precisely how best to guide you in and around our university.

CITY OF ENSCHEDE

WELCOME TO STUDENT CITY ENSCHEDE

In the summer of 1985, I came to Enschede as a young man from Groningen to study here at the University of Twente. Now, almost 40 years later, this choice still makes me feel incredibly enthusiastic.

Because studying in Enschede means studying in the beating heart of the East of the Netherlands. Enschede is happening. A city that continuously strives for further developments and innovations. Not least due to the presence of the many thousands of students in the city.

Together, you provide an important contribution to our vibrant city life. Both during and next to your studies. And you can keep contributing even after your studies. For example, by applying your acquired knowledge at one of the many businesses. Or by showing entrepreneurship and starting your own enterprise, as successfully demonstrated by many former students in Enschede. They applied their knowledge to the market at various spin-offs and grew these into large companies. This way, you can work on your own career, the development of the city, and the innovation of your own speciality.

In addition to all the amenities that a student can wish for, Enschede also offers many services in terms of shopping, entertainment, sport, culture, and nature. In short, a city not only good for studying, but also for pleasant living. This magazine will provide you with extensive information. The Kick-In Committee of the University of Twente has done its best to prepare the thousands of new students as optimally as possible for their future student days. And the results are showing!

I wish you all the best in student city Enschede.

WHAT

IS THE KICK-IN?

The Kick-In is the official introduction period of the University of Twente. Each year, the Kick-In takes place in the week before the lectures start, so all new students are fully prepared to start their study programme and their student life. The Kick-In 2023 consists of six or nine (bachelor or master /exchange respectively) days full of activities, daring you to explore all options student life has to offer. You will experience many new things during the Kick-In: You will meet new people, and experience all different associations that are part of student life in Enschede. You will explore the study, sports, culture, and social associations. Of course, you will not experience this by yourself. You will enjoy all activities of the Kick-In together with your do-group, a group of students from your study guided by two do-group parents, who are older students from your study. Further down in the magazine you can read more information on do-groups.

WHY TAKE PART IN THE KICK-IN?

“Your student days are the best time of your life.” You have probably heard this before. We believe this is true. Your student life is full of new opportunities, friendships, and experiences. The best way to kickstart your student life is by joining the Kick-In. The goal of the Kick-In is to give you the best possible start of your student life by exploring everything life in Enschede entails. During the Kick-In you will be prepared by older students from all aspects of student life. All this will be done with cool activities and fun events in a relaxing atmosphere. After the Kick-In you will be in the centre of student life. Trust us, you do not want to miss this!

STUDY-RELATED PROGRAMME

The Study-Related Programme is different per study. Your Study-Related Programme can be found on kick-in.nl. This part of the programme is organised by the study associations. Since these days are different for each study, they are marked as ‘study-related programme’ in the programme on the next page. During the study-related programme you will have a lot of fun activities with your fellow students and the association of your study programme. Furthermore, you will learn everything about your study programme, and you can arrange everything needed before taking a seat in the lecture halls. It varies per study association whether the Study-Related Programme will take place on campus, or whether a camp will be organised. In both cases, you will get the maximum out of your introduction, and you will have a great time with your fellow students and study association.

GENERAL KICK-IN HISTORY

The Kick-In was first organised in 1963, when the University was still known as Technical School Twente. Since 2008, the introduction period was rebranded as the “Kick-In”. Since the beginning, the introduction period had a theme linked to it. During the 1980s, there were themes such as “Choose”, “Direction”, and (believe it or not) “Goose”. With a theme that varies every year, it is not only possible to make clear what the committee members want to achieve this year with the introduction of the new students, but it is also possible to give a very personalised touch to each introduction period. This provides every introduction with a unique atmosphere and its own identity!

DARE TO EXPLORE!

This year the theme of the Kick-In is ‘Dare to Explore!’ During the Kick-In we dare you to explore the different study, social, sport, culture, and world associations, as well as the campus and the city centre. Step out of your comfort zone and dare to explore which association and group of people fit you!

The general part of the Kick-In is the same for all students, independent of your study. Every new student of the university will take part in the General Kick-In, consisting of approximately 2000 Bachelor students! During the General part of the Kick-In the different days are dedicated to the different parts of student life. There will be a day dedicated to sports, a day for culture, and a day for social associations! These days will introduce you to the different associations by organising many fun activities especially for you! You can try out new sports at the sports associations, enjoy shows or take part in a workshop at the culture associations, and get to know the city with the student associations! Additionally, international associations will be represented during the global fair. We dare you to explore all different associations of the University of Twente during these days.

MASTER DO-GROUPS

Your Kick-In will start on the 26th of August. Hundreds of students from all over the world come to Enschede to mark the beginning of their student life. You will enter a new environment where you will (probably) hardly know anyone. This is exciting, but you are certainly not alone. On the first day of the Kick-In, you will get acquainted with your own Master Do-Group.

Together with your master do-group parents and several fellow students, you will enjoy the Kick-In and visit all kinds of activities. The master do-group parents are students of the University of Twente as well, so they know their way around the campus and Enschede. Feel free to ask them anything, they are here to guide you during the Kick-In!

17 K I C KIN

WHAT IS A DO-GROUP?

During the Kick-In, more than 2500 future students worldwide will come to Enschede to mark the start of their student life here. You will enter a new environment where you will probably hardly know anyone. This is quite exciting, of course, but you are certainly not alone. On the very first day of the Kick-In, you will meet your do-group.

WHAT IS A DO-GROUP?

A do-group is a small group of about 8 to 12 first-year students from the same study programme. During the Kick-In, the various Bachelor do-groups can easily be recognised by the do-group shirts that you will receive from your do-group parents. You will experience the Kick-In together with your do-group. Often the students from your do-group will remain your friends for the rest of your student life!

DO-GROUP MARKET

Before getting into a do-group, at the Kick-In Opening Market, you and the other first-year students from all study programmes will get to know the rich association life of the University of Twente. After an afternoon full of new impressions, all new students from the different study programmes will come

together. A separate do-group market will be held for each study programme. All do-groups will present themselves by means of a video and a short talk. In this way, you can determine which do-groups would suit you best. When all the do-groups have been addressed, you can create a shortlist with your preferred do-groups, and the division is made. From that moment onwards, you will experience the Kick-In together with your do-group, and the Kick-In can really start!

DO-GROUP PARENTS

Two official do-group parents guide the do-groups. These are senior students who have already experienced a KickIn and can show you the best things. Often there are also a lot of extra dogroup parents who like to join during the most remarkable event of the year. Often referred to as aunts and uncles. A do-group can be organised by an

association, which can be a sports, a culture, a world or a social association. However, there are also independent do-groups that are not linked to an association. These are led by groups of friends or members of an independent fraternity or sorority.

All do-group parents have followed a training to be prepared for all situations and take proper care of their group of kiddos. In the training, topics like alcohol consumption, social safety and sexual consent are discussed. If you have questions or considerations regarding the do-group parents, you can always contact us.

We hope you are looking forward to meeting new people and making new friends. The do-group parents are happy to show you the way during this unforgettable introduction period. You can always ask them to accompany you at the activities you are interested in.

TO-DO LIST

To make sure that you will be completely ready for the start of your study at the University of Twente, we have listed the most important things that you must arrange!

WHAT SHOULD I BRING AND ARRANGE BEFORE THE KICK-IN STARTS?

√ Register for the Kick-In via our website! (www.kick-in.nl)

√ Sufficient cash and/or a bank card with sufficient funds

√ A valid proof of ID

√ Plenty of sunscreen lotion

√ Sufficient clothing (including sportswear)

√ A bike with proper lighting

√ Your Kick-In e-ticket

√ A place to sleep (or your overnight bag)

In advance, make sure that you have a place to sleep during the Kick-In! The Kick-In organisation is not responsible for ensuring a place to sleep for the participants of the Kick-In.

If you do not have a room (yet), check whether you can temporarily stay with (study) friends or maybe family or acquaintances. Is that really not possible? Then experience shows that there is always someone within your do-group who wants to offer you a place to sleep, but do not count on this. So bring your overnight bag!

Of course you do not want to miss a day of the Kick-In. But it may happen that you are not able to attend due to circumstances and therefore have to miss a few days. That is a shame, but do not panic: go to our info desk upon arrival at the University of Twente. The crew of the info desk can then help you further and will ensure that you can experience the Kick-In without any problems! However, you must register in advance on the website.

WHAT DO I NEED FOR THE START OF MY ACADEMIC YEAR?

√ Check whether your data is correct in Studielink (www.studielink.nl)

√ Apply for a personal OV-chipkaart (Dutch card for public transport) (www.ov-chipkaart.nl)

√ Apply for your OV (public transport) student product and collect this at an OV-chipkaart charging point

√ Apply for your student loan through DUO (more information: www.duo.nl/particulier/studiefinanciering/voorwaarden.jsp)

√ Find out whether you might qualify for an additional scholarship or health care allowance

√ Arrange a laptop that is suitable for your study programme, for example through the Notebook Service Centre

When you stay in student accommodation in Enschede, there are also a few things you must arrange. Register with your new municipality and find a new general practitioner and dentist. You will find more information and tips about finding a room later in this magazine!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

QUESTIONS FOR FUTURE STUDENTS

I DON’T KNOW ANYONE YET IN ENSCHEDE, WILL I BE ALONE DURING THE KICK-IN?

Of course not! All participants choose a do-group, which is a group of fellow new students and senior students of your own study programme. With these students you can hang out during the entire Kick-In. You will go to all activities together with this do-group, so you will quickly form a close bond. Experience shows that often this forms the first basis for a group of friends!

I HAVE ALREADY PAID FOR THE KICK-IN PROGRAMME. WILL THIS COVER EVERYTHING OR WILL I STILL HAVE TO FIND AN ATM DURING THE KICK-IN?

Fortunately, the participant contribution covers by far most of the costs, for example lunch on almost all days. However, tickets must be bought for a few activities. Your do-group parents will order these on the first day. This will involve small contributions, for example approximately 5 euros for a bite at a restaurant. The drinks in the evenings are also for your own account. There is an ATM on the campus of the University of Twente, so it is possible to withdraw money there if you need to.

MY STUDY PROGRAMME IS IN ENGLISH, DO I HAVE TO SPEAK ENGLISH ALL THE TIME DURING THE KICK-IN?

The official language at the UT is English. You will notice that there are many international students at the UT, so they certainly can be part of your do-group. If that is the case, even if it is only one person, make sure you speak English in the group, so everyone can follow the conversation. If there are only Dutch students in your do-group, you may of course speak Dutch within the group.

NINE DAYS FULL OF NEW IMPRESSIONS SEEMS A LONG TIME, HOW WILL I EVER KEEP UP WITH SUCH AN INTRODUCTION?

Many enthusiastic do-groups see it as a mission to take advantage of all the activities during the day and the events at night. Luckily, you are under no obligation, and it’s your choice when you do and do not join your do-group for an activity. Also, there will always be a sunny lawn somewhere to have a rest. In addition, there is a rest day on Sunday (in the Bachelor programme) where everyone can relax a bit.

I WAS TOO BUSY ENJOYING MY HOLIDAY TO ARRANGE A ROOM. CAN YOU ARRANGE SOMETHING FOR ME?

First you should check whether you can stay with friends, family or acquaintances in Enschede. Is that really not possible? Then experience shows that there is often someone within your do-group who wants to offer you a place to sleep. So, make sure you bring your overnight bag on the first day of the KickIn! Unfortunately, the organisation itself does not provide any sleeping places.

I DON’T HAVE TO SURVIVE ON GROLSCH ALONE FOR 9 DAYS, DO I?

Of course not, we will make sure that there is plenty of drinking water and soft drinks!

20 KIC KI N

QUESTIONS FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS OF FUTURE STUDENTS

MY CHILD IS INVITED TO THE KICK-IN, BUT WHAT EXACTLY DOES IT ENTAIL?

The Kick-In is the official introduction period of the University of Twente. It is the opportunity to get to know the university, the campus and Enschede with all its possibilities and to discover all nice aspects of student life.

MY CHILD DOES NOT KNOW ANYONE IN ENSCHEDE, NOW WHAT?

All participants choose a do-group with whom they will hang out during the entire Kick-In. Experience shows that often this forms the first basis for a group of friends!

CAN

I VISIT DURING THE KICK-IN TO SEE HOW MY CHILD IS DOING?

Can you? Yes. Do we recommend this? No. All activities that the Kick-In organises are only open to students. If you still want to come to the campus, we highly recommend you to first consult this with your child.

IT IS 8 A.M. IN THE MORNING AND MY CHILD HAS STILL NOT SEND ME A MESSAGE. HE/SHE/THEY WAS SUPPOSED TO COME HOME TONIGHT. NOW WHAT?

He or she is probably lying on a mat at a do-group parents place – or who knows, maybe with another participant – with a phone with an empty battery. Let him or her have a nice sleep in and if you do not receive a message later on, you can call the Kick-In info desk on 053 489 2356. They can often quickly reach the do-group.

WHAT

IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO MY SON/ DAUGHTER/CHILD?

When registering, the participants will provide us with a contact person. If necessary, we will call this person. Fortunately, a lot can also be handled within the do-group; they will take good care of each other and the do-group parents are there to make sure the new students go through the Kick-In in one piece.

MY SON/DAUGHTER/CHILDHE S IS NOT YET 18. WILL HE/SHE/THEY BE OKAY THIS WEEK?

Of course. Contrary to popular belief, student life is not all about beer! Our programme includes many cool day activities and next to that, parties are also fun without alcohol.

21 K I C KIN

WHO WILL YOU MEET DURING THE KICK-IN?

The Kick-In is of course completely organised for the new first-year students, but these are certainly not the only people you will meet. Almost all students at the UT will be present during the KickIn to let you experience the best possible time. We have listed a few of them for you.

Lisa Karst

The largest group that will be present during the Kick-In are of course the kiddos: the future students. The kiddos form small groups of about 8-12 students, a so-called do-group, with whom they will experience the entire Kick-In. All these students are from the same study programme, so these will become your first friends of your student days. Many do-group brothers and sisters (yes, because that is what they are) you will see for years to come!

Technical Medicine, 19 years old

DID YOU PREPARE FOR THE KICK-IN? IF SO, HOW DID YOU PREPARE?

I tried to find a room before the Kick-In started. Back then I lived on the other side of the Netherlands, so I needed a room. Unfortunately, I could not find a room before the Kick-In, but luckily this did not matter. On the first day of the Kick-In, I made a lot of new friends. These friends offered me a place to stay during the Kick-In, which was nice! During this week I biked around Enschede and stayed the night with different friends, which was a lot of fun.

DID YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF THE KICK-IN COME TRUE?

Before I came to Enschede I did not know what to expect. During the opening of the Kick-In, I realized that it was much bigger than I imagined it to be. We did fun activities starting in the morning and ending late at night. I did a lot of things during the Kick-In that I never did before. I made long days, but I enjoyed every single moment and would definitely do it again if I had the chance.

WHAT IS THE BEST MEMORY OF THE KICK-IN?

There were lots of nice moments during the Kick-In. If I needed to choose something I think the Cantus was one of the best moments that I remembered. I never experienced anything like this before and everyone was mysterious about it beforehand. Nobody told us anything beforehand to keep it a surprise. I liked that I did not expect anything before it started, so I could experience it myself. It was really impressive and I will not forget this memory easily.

22 KIC KI N
KIDDOS

DO-GROUP PARENTS

A do-group is guided by senior students. These students are often in their second or third year and therefore already know a lot more about Enschede, the campus and the university.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A DOGROUP PARENT?

First, of course, because it’s fun! I had a wonderful experience as a kiddo and as a do-group parent you can organise part of it yourself and give your own twist to the Kick-In for the kiddos. I am a member of a fraternity: HGB, a large group of friends and we have had a do-group for the study of Business Information Technology for over ten years! Together with a large group of friends where a lot of experience about the Kick-In is present, guiding an activity group during the Kick-In is great!

Liam van der Veen

International Business Administration, 21 years old

HOW ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE THE NEW KIDDOS THE BEST KICK-IN EVER?

Long before the Kick-In starts, we start with the preparations. Then we look at the programme and work out what we think is the best programme and which parts you want to attend no matter what. In addition to the general programme, we also set up small fun activities such as a BBQ and drinks throughout the Kick-In. The rest of what we do happens during the Kick-In, as a do-group parent, uncle or aunt you build a bond with the kiddos and try to give them the best possible impression of what student life here in Enschede entails. We help with practical matters around the study and talk a lot about our own experiences, but of course we also party very hard during the KickIn!

WHAT MAKES THE KICK-IN SPECIAL FOR YOU?

In just over a week, you change from someone who is new to Enschede with only new people around you to someone who feels at home here in Enschede and who knows many fellow students of the programme. You lay the foundation for a great start to a new chapter in your life and, personally, I have made friends for life during the Kick-In. If I have to pick one programme part during the Kick-In as my favorite it would definitely be the Storming of the Bastille! I do not want to give away too much just yet, because you will have to experience it yourself, but the Storming of the Bastille is a really unique activity compared to other introduction weeks in the Netherlands. It tests your endurance and is a great bonding experience for a do-group.

23 K I C KIN

CREW MEMBERS

The Kick-In is not possible without the help of crew members. Every year there are over 150 crew members who work during the Kick-In to give the kiddos a great time. There are many different crew groups;

• All-round crew

• Media crew

• Care crew

• Info desk crew

• Transport crew

• Technical crew

• Calamity crew

• iDB Committee (ICT crew)

This coming Kick-In is my 4th year as a Kick-In crew member. I started off as an all-round crew member in 2020, after which I joined the transport crew. We are a close group with excellent car drivers and are responsible for solving the logistical puzzle during the Kick-In. This year I’ll be the head of the group, being a kind of chairman. With our 4 vans and the big red manitou we move everything from A to B, from tables & chairs to pens and whiteboards! This also means that we are the first to arrive and the last to leave, but are always in time for the parties.

What I really like is the solidarity that you get with each other. You spend a lot of time together during the Kick-In and you forge friendships in that time that will last a long time! The transport crew is very close. People that once also partook in the Kick-In as transport crew I still have good contact with. We once had a drink in Utrecht and a couple of people that I’ve never met also joined in and we hit it off immediately. This all comes through the shared experience called the Kick-In. During those two weeks you see each other’s high and especially low points, because it can be difficult sometimes. However we always pull each other through it!

Ha, this is a difficult one, because every activity that’s on the menu has something nice to offer. The logical answer should be the ‘Storming of the Bastille’, arguably the most iconic activity of the Kick-In. An activity that kiddos talk about for weeks, but you also look back on after a couple of years. But from a logistical point of view, it is just a really long day. I personally would make a case for the end show. Last year we got glimpses during the Kick-In of what the technical crew was upto in the big tent; Programming away with the lights, hearing bits and pieces of the to-be end show. And then, after two weeks, you stand in the back of the tent and see the lasers doing their thing on the beat of the music, it really closes the Kick-in off in a fantastic way. It is hard not to pink away the tears then haha.

THIS YEAR’S CHARITY

Every year the Kick-In supports a charity. This year the association ‘KWF Kanker Bestrijding’, also known as KWF has been chosen!

KWF, short for “Koningin Wilhelmina Fonds”, was founded by our late queen Wilhelmina 71 years ago. Since then, KWF has been committed to fighting cancer. KWF does this by funding scientific research. KWF finances hundreds of studies into various forms of cancer. KWF is committed to initiatives that help people further. That means not only fighting cancer, but we are also committed to a better life with the disease. Whether you want to prevent cancer, have just been diagnosed, are in the middle of treatment, or are wondering how to proceed. We provide initiatives that support people, such as centres for life with and after cancer and the cancer.nl platform. Besides that, we are working on life-changing research that will quickly benefit patients.

Almost every person will have to deal with cancer at some point. The consequences are often overwhelming. If you have it yourself. But also if you know someone with the disease. We have been making a difference for all those millions of people for over 71 years.

We would like to thank the Kick-In committee for selecting us as the charity for this year. We are counting on a successful edition!

25 K I C KIN

The iDB is a committee taking care of almost all digital infrastructure behind the Kick-In. We work together one evening a week to design and maintain the iDB. Our systems handle everything from communication with participants, to rostering of the crew. Everything that is digital during the Kick-In, such as the registration of all participants, the app or the ticket system, is part of the iDB.

WHO ARE YOU AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PART OF THE IDB?

I am Joost, a sixth year data science masters student. I joined the IDB at the start of 2022, so I have only been with them for one full Kick-In so far.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO BECOME A MEMBER OF THE IDB?

I choose to become a member of the iDB because I wanted to do something useful, and a housemate who was already a member brought me along to one of the work evenings. The IDB was just starting work on the current app, and they can always use more hands to help with maintaining the existing systems, so I could immediately make an effective contribution to the Kick-In. Within the iDB I am mostly focused on building the app.

WHAT IS YOU BEST MEMORY AS AN IDB MEMBER?

My best memory as iDB is seeing half a year’s worth of hard work pay off during the Kick-In of 2022. It was really cool to immediately see the results of what I am creating during the year. Especially because everything you build will be used by thousands of students, which is very impressive.

WHAT MAKES THE IDB SUCH AN EXCITING COMMITTEE?

The work that I do in the committee is quite varied, and we get to play a big role in this event which is the starting point of student life for thousands of people, without nearly as much commitment as a full year in the KIC. Since we play a role in so many parts of the Kick-In the IDB also offers a nice peek behind the scenes of how the Kick-In is organised. Additionally, you gain a lot of insight into many of the other Student Union processes and committees.

HISTORY OF THE IDB

The iDB exists since 2005 and was originally built to ease several procedures at and around the first day of the Kick-In. In 2004, lots of unnecessary time was spent and the organising committee of 2005 decided that this was to be fixed once and for all. The result of this effort is the iDB. Since the introduction in 2005, lots of things have changed and the functionality of the iDB was extended every year since. End 2012 the development of the new iDB version was started, designed to completely replace the old version. Today, the iDB consists of a combination of webapplications and regular desktop applications. Many modules provide functionality like the applications for participants, payment, application of crew members, rostering of all crew, etc.

SUSTAINABILITY TIPS & TRICKS

Each year the Kick-In Committee takes steps towards making UTwente’s introduction week more sustainable. To get an overview of what the Kick-In does for sustainability have a look at https:// www.kick-in.nl/en/article/46. With big events like these, there are a lot of actions, big and small, which everyone can take to make a difference. Including you! Here are some tips and tricks on how you can become more sustainable.

1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT BIN!

Waste separation is actively promoted at the University of Twente: you will find garbage cans with four different bins everywhere at the UT. Make sure you choose the right bin for your waste! Each waste container states more information about how waste should be separated. During the Kick-In, a similar system will be used to separate your waste, so keep an eye out for them.

3. TAKE THE BIKE!

Taking the bike is one of the most sustainable ways of transport. Before you start the Kick-In, it is highly recommended to have a bike in Enschede. Many firstyear students will bring their bike from home (thuisthuis, see the student-like ABC on page 87), but when you cannot take your bike from home, there are some other options.

Buying

Buying your own bike is a very good option. As a student, it is better not to choose the most expensive and fancy model, as bikes are, unfortunately, still occasionally stolen. Besides, only if your bike has a beautiful rattling sound while cycling, you can call it a real student bike. A second-hand bike is therefore often a better option and it is also more sustainable! Get one at Marktplaats, eBay or a second-hand shop. Do not forget to check out the University of Twente Marketplace on Facebook.

Bus

If you do not have a bike at your disposal, public transport offers a good sustainable alternative to taking the car. Both the campus and centre of Enschede are easily accessible by public transport. Bus line 1 and 9 stop at both locations!

Renting

If you do not want to buy your own bike you could always rent one. You, for example, could rent one of the campus bikes which you can find around campus, for a shorter amount of time.

4. EAT LESS MEAT!

2. FILL YOUR BOTTLE!

During the Kick-In we want to encourage you to use a reusable water bottle! This way we can jointly limit the waste flow from plastic bottles. Tap water in the Netherlands is drinkable, so you can refill your bottle on the entire campus, at the toilets or at the waterpoints outside on the O&O square and at the Utrack. During the Kick-In, extra water tap points will be installed, so water is always available. Thus, bring your bottle and just fill it up.

The production of meat has a big impact on the environment. Thus, choosing at least one day in the week where you do not eat meat would make a big difference. During the Kick-In you will be provided with some vegetarian options, so you can experience that eating meatless is most definitely not tasteless.

YOUR FIRST YEAR AT THE UNIVERSITY

When you are a first-year student, you may experience many new things. Let’s explain few of them related to your studies.

During your bachelor’s, you will be taught according to the unique Twente Education Model. This way of teaching makes studying more effective, future-proof and also a lot more fun.

YOU COMPLETE MODULES

During the first two years of your bachelor’s programme, you complete four modules a year. Each module is focusing on one theme which you explore in depth during lectures, workshops and feedback sessions with your fellow students. You complete a module with a team project in which you address a realworld problem. This way, you put scientific theory into practice. Challenging and exciting!

Your third year looks quite different. The first half of the third year consists of electives (except for the Technical Medicine programme). And the last half-year is dedicated to the final bachelor’s assignment in which you solve a current issue in a scientific way.

STUDY POINTS AND ASSESSMENTS

Student workload at Dutch universities is expressed in EC, also named ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), which is widely used throughout the European Union. In the Netherlands, each credit represents 28 hours of work. You need to acquire 60 credits each year. Your programme assigns fixed numbers of hours to each assignment, project report or exam. Each module consists of different tests. How many tests these are and in what form they are taken (written, verbal, report, etc.) varies per programme and module. You will be graded for each module and/ or for parts of the module.

OBTAIN 45 OR MORE CREDIT POINTS AND CONTINUE TO YOUR 2ND YEAR

Our aim is to get you in the right place as soon as possible, which is why we use the principle of a binding recommendation. You will receive a positive recommendation if you have obtained 45 or more of the 60 EC in the first year. A negative recommendation is binding and means you have to leave the programme. Under certain circumstances, we may give you a positive recommendation despite a low score. For example, if we are confident that you are in the right place.

STUDENT UNION

as possible.

WHO AM I?

My name is Eva Vogelezang and I am writing on behalf of the Student Union, the organisation of the University of Twente that empowers all students to achieve ‘More Than A Degree!’

I can imagine that this university and its sparkling student life is quite new for you, so therefore I want to use this opportunity to share the experiences I have had up to now and to tell you something more about the Student Union and the University of Twente.

Almost four years ago I started my study here just like you will do in the near future. I began my student life with the mindset of trying out as many new things as possible. This made for a very full, busy life, but also a lot of fun. From learning a new sport,

to arranging the Kick-In at the rowing association, to organising parties, activities and competitions.

Currently, I see how many skills, capabilities and experiences I got out of all these extracurricular activities. I learned about working together with others, leadership, time management and a lot of other useful skills. These are skills you might not learn during your study, but are very important for your personal development and future career. Next to that, extracurricular activities are a lot of fun and you will meet many new people!

Studying at the University of Twente is about developing yourself in multiple aspects. Challenge yourself to achieve More Than A Degree!

32 UNIVER S I YT
The Student Union is there for you; to make your student days fantastic! We believe that it is important to do more than just studying. Therefore, we try to do our best to make your student days as memorable, informative and beneficial

WHAT IS THE STUDENT UNION?

Doing these different extracurricular activities finally brought me to being a Student Union board member. We promote personal development and well-being of students of the University of Twente. With six students we form the full-time board of the Student Union, which is supported by employees and committees. We are committed to you and your fellow students in all kinds of ways. For example, we are responsible for: the policy and subsidy division of sports and culture, the organisation of events and the stimulation of student entrepreneurship at the University of Twente. In addition, we regularly consult with the University’s Executive Board. The SU is seen as the umbrella for all student organisations in Enschede. We form an important bridge between the student organisations and the other boards of the UT. This means that our position is ideal for representing the interests of students and associations as well as possible!

WHAT DO WE DO?

The Kick-In Committee, Create Tomorrow and TEDxTwenteU are SU committees that organise large events. The Buddy Committee helps you feel welcome as an international student.

The UnionCard gives students the opportunity to use all sports and cultural facilities. For example, you can become a member of sport and cultural associations with a UnionCard and you can go swimming, play squash and tennis for free!

Since the Student Union is not profit-oriented, we can arrange the very best deals! The individual deals can be found on the UnionDeals platform.

A number of building and locations, namely the Bastille on the campus, the water sports complex, study area Wallstreet in the city and the Pakkerij for the social associations, are managed by the SU.

The UnionShop sells study material, university clothing and gift items.

Student activism is awarded through the More Than a Degree Awards. Additonally, we support activism through the board improvement programme.

Entrepreneurship is stimulated in cooperation with Novel-T. The Incubase is established in the Bastille, a place for students with their own company.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANTTO DO MORE THAN A DEGREE?

Nowhere in the Netherlands, actually nowhere in the world students have such a big influence as here at the University of Twente. The student community in Enschede is completely powered by motivated students, our opinions matter and we get a lot of opportunities. Students run the associations and organise the events, and as the Student Union, we are really proud of that fact! Whether it is a full-time board year at a study association or a small committee at a sports club; student activism is vital to keeping the student community at our university going. Without this, the Kick-In and our student life would not be as sparkling as it is right now. You will learn how to deal with great responsibilities, to come up with solutions and you will greatly expand your network. It is an investment in yourself from which you will benefit later on during your study programme and your career. Finally, More Than a Degree is a scoring point with future employers: they trust the quality of the study programme, but what makes you stand out from all those other students who have obtained the same degree? Do you have special qualities, for example because you have been part of a committee or a board? With these experiences you will instantly have an advantage!

You will get endless possibilities to meet new people, develop yourself and grow in the directions you want to go once you dare to explore everything the University of Twente has to offe!.

Every year, the largest relay race in the world is launched: The Batavierenrace. The route goes through the centre of Nijmegen, via Germany and the Achterhoek, to the campus of the University of Twente. The total walking distance is more than 175 kilometres and is divided into 25 stages. After the finish of the Batavierenrace, the largest student party in the Benelux takes place every year on the campus of the University of Twente in Enschede. It is estimated that 13,000 students are going crazy at different locations on campus.

MAY

TEDxTwenteU is an independently organised TED event, known for its famous saying ‘ideas worth spreading’. The intention is to share an idea or concept with the audience in a few minutes. And the speakers? These are our students and teachers at the University of Twente! The audience consists of the 100 most enthusiastic students, giving the event an intimate atmosphere.

MAY

Every year, a competitive think tank for students from all over the Netherlands is organised. It has been some time since the Elfstedentocht (Eleven City Tour) took place in the north of our country, but in Enschede, the cold is defied every year during the Elfbierentocht (Eleven Beers Tour). A tour across the campus along all the pubs of the study associations. Only the strongest complete this tough trip.

JULY

SummerSounds is quite a new event here on the campus of the University of Twente. This year will only be the second iteration of the festival after all. The SummerSounds is an unforgettable day where you can celebrate the end of the academic year together with your fellow students. Good music, drinks, food, and more are present at the O&O square to give everyone the best possible end to all their hard work throughout the entire year.

SEPTEMBER

All associations are run by a student board. To congratulate these enthusiastic students and to wish them luck with their board year, a constitution gettogether will be held to which the entire association and all the other boards are invited. Unique in Enschede is that there are (almost) always free drinks.

DECEMBER

The building run is a known concept for multiple years now at the University of Twente. The race starts in the Citadel building and is finished on the 13th floor of the Horst tower. The route takes participants through 6 buildings on the campus of the University of Twente. You can even participate in teams.

STUDYING ABROAD

SVEN BOUWMEESTER, 22 YEARS OLD CIVIL ENGINEERING

WHO ARE YOU AND WHERE DID YOU GO FOR YOUR STUDY ABROAD?

Hi! My name is Sven, I am 22 years old and I am a third year student Civil Engineering at the University of Twente. For my minor I went to study abroad at Luleå University of Technology in Sweden.

WHAT DID YOU STUDY THERE?

As my minor, I followed some master courses relating to civil engineering. The courses consisted of Finite Element Methods, Environmental Geotactics, Bridge design and operation and engineering management.

WHAT IS THE MOST BIZARRE THING YOU EXPERIENCED THERE?

One time I was on a trip with a some friends. We were driving around in a car, and suddenly saw giant mooses standing on the side of the road. It was amazing to see animals that big in the wild, especially since we were very close to Luleå. Mooses also come into the city there every now and then, I did not see that but it is insane to realise.

DID YOU NOTICE A LOT OF CULTURAL DIFFERENCES?

The culture of Sweden is not very different than the culture of the Netherlands. However, since I studied in the winter in Northern Sweden, there was not a lot of daylight. Therefore, people did not spend as much time outside as they do in the Netherlands. Other than that, I would say people in Sweden are more closed off than people in the Netherlands. In Sweden people are social with their friends, but you aren’t social with strangers.

DID YOU MEET PEOPLE FROM MANY DIFFERENT CULTURES?

I did! At the University there was a large group of exchange students, around 290 students from all over the world. Therefore I met a lot of German, Spanish, and French people. There were also students from the other side of the world, for example the USA, and Brazil and Iran. In our student house we had a friend group with people from our floor. There were students from France, the Netherlands, Italy and Germany. Every Wednesday someone made a dish from their country, which was a great way to get to know new dishes from different cultures.

WHAT IS THE BEST THING YOU EXPERIENCED?

Going on a lot of trips with the friends I made there. We went to Norway, on trips around Sweden and skiing in Finland! So the best thing was doing fun activities with the people I met. When we were in Finland, just about to leave there was the best, most beautiful northern light I have seen during the time I was there.

WHY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND EVERYONE TO STUDY ABROAD?

When studying abroad you get to know people from all over the world, and experience all kinds of different cultures. Besides that you get to experience a new country and see and do things you can never do in your own country. I would recommend it to everyone!

40 UNIVER S I YT

STUDENT FROM ABROAD

DANIEL BEJARANO, 24 YEARS OLD CIVIL ENGINEERING AND MANAGEMENT

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?

I come from a small city called Aguascalientes, located in the northcentral region of Mexico.

WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO THE NETHERLANDS?

I graduated with my bachelor’s in 2021 and started working in a construction company. While I was working, I became aware that I wanted to do something more with my life than just work. I realised that I wanted to contribute to help solving real-world problems for the future, but also wanted to learn about different cultures and countries around the world. So, I started looking, and based on ranking and opportunities for scholarships I found the UT. The opportunity came to study for my master’s and specialized in Water Management and Engineering and so I took it.

WHAT DO YOU DO HERE BESIDES STUDYING?

Well, if I could summarize, I would say on Tuesday I go to events that Ludica organises even if I’m not good at tennis, I just like to meet new people. On Wednesday I train volleyball at Harambee currently I’m part of the team “Tent”. On Thursdays I often go with my friends from my master to the bar of ConcepT at the university. All these activities are related to associations of the university which are great for meeting people and finding new friends. Outside of the university, I go out with my international housemates and Dutch friends to the city center and some weekends I travel around Europe to see and experience new places.

WHAT DID YOU NOTICE WHEN MOVING TO THE NETHERLANDS?

It is such a 360 coming from Mexico, everything looks more organised and cleaner. It was so fun and nice to see lots of people riding their bikes and of course struggling to find my own. Getting used to wintertime and barely seeing the sun for two weeks was new to me but also had fun living like that for the first time. I thought I liked the cold weather but now I think of myself as more of the warm type of person as here the temperatures are lower than I’m used to and you can’t go out without a jacket for most of the year.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE WITH NEW STUDENTS?

The UT and the Netherlands will welcome you with open arms, but you must put effort into it. You will have to come openminded, ready to face new challenges and new experiences. Sometimes you will feel that you are not up to the level or that you don’t fit in, but stay focused and motivated. I think there is a place for everyone here even if sometimes it doesn’t feel like it. Enjoy everything you can for as long as it is possible because time goes fast, and people tend to be happier when they look back and think about the things they dared to do even if it did not work out than the things they didn’t do at all.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND STUDYING ABROAD?

For sure! I think being abroad puts you in a situation where you grow and develop more as a person. You get to experience the whole culture of a different country and learn new ways to see life itself. In a way, you also learn to appreciate your own culture more. You learn to develop your social skills and even more so because you are speaking a different language. It’s a unique experience that can’t be explained, you must live it.

GUIDANCE & SUPPORT

Your student days are often seen as a great experience and, luckily, this is often the case. However, you might face some problems. For the most diverse questions or problems that you encounter during your study programme, there are various counselors you can contact for information, advice, and support.

Your study advisor can guide you through your curriculum and is your first point of contact within your study programme. They can, give you advice on how to approach your study programme, study planning, choice of subjects, and monitor your study progress. Moreover, if you are experiencing personal struggles and/or challenging circumstances you can discuss these with your study advisor to receive and look for possible solutions.

Next to talking to your study advisor about your study programme and potential support, you can also go to our Student Affairs Coaching & Counseling coaches. These student coaches provide input and can give you advice on how to deal with your possible struggles. Our student counsellors are there to inform, advise, mediate and support you and can support you in cross-curriculum questions. For example, about aspects that hinder your study progress, such as personal circumstances. You can go here for questions about law and regulations, (supporting) schemes and provisions regarding finances, top sports and educational adjustments, about confidential issues, and procedures surrounding the Binding Study Advice (BSA). For more information visit: https://www. utwente.nl/en/ces/sacc/coaching-counselling/.

You can go to our student psychologist for personal questions and study problems you encounter during your study programme. Examples of such issues are performance anxiety, study stress, procrastination, lack of discipline or motivation. Our student psychologist also offers guidance on personal problems that stop you from functioning during your study programme and student life. For example, struggling to make contact with other students, insecurity, worrying, or feeling down. For questions about your choice of study programme and career, please go to our career counsellor for advice. Here, they offer you individual guidance and coaching where your career path and personal profile will come first. For questions regarding studying with a disability, do not hesitate to get in touch with our diversity coordinator. STUDENT PARTICIPATION

We can imagine that you would like to become actively involved in the decision making processes that affect your student experience at the University of Twente. In this section we will highlight the top two bodies that you can participate in as a student to help create policies that will benefit all students.

UNIVERSITY COUNCIL

At the highest level of the university, the University Council provides input on university-wide matters. This concerns all kinds of things students encounter during their student days. As it is difficult to ask all 10,000+ students for their opinion, there are elections every year in June, where you as a student can vote for the student party that can best represent you. In addition, it is also very useful to be committed to other students, which is also a lot of fun and educational, so it is worth considering joining a participation council!

FACULTY COUNCIL

The university consists of 5 faculties, each with multiple study programmes. The Faculty Council consists of 14 elected members. Half of the council members are faculty employee representatives (such as professors and lecturers) and the other half are students representatives. Every year, the students can run for elections, after which all students of the faculty can vote for whom they want on the Faculty Council. When you are elected, you are expected to represent the student voice in a range of topics for you faculty for a year.

All kinds of things are discussed within the Faculty Council, such as the budget - which consists of a few million euros –or the education and examination regulations: all rules about tests and such. This year each faculty received more than half a million euros from the Ministry of Education, that had to be spent on improving education. The faculty councils had a lot of say in this matter and because it was about education, they listened carefully to what the students had to say.

It is great fun to sit on the faculty council for a year and you will also learn a lot from it. It is also very cool that you actually have a say as a student on how things go within the university.

STUDY ASSOCIATIONS

Each study programme at the University of Twente has its own study association. As a first-year student, you will see this immediately. For example, the study association of your study programme will ensure that you become familiarised with your faculty and that you can buy your study books. The study association mainly deals with studyrelated matters. For example, organising lectures and excursions to companies and institutions that are interesting for your study programme. The associations also monitor the quality of the study programmes and you can go there with questions and comments about your study programme. Besides all these purposes the study association is also a place for socialising. All study associations regularly organise get-togethers where you can catch up with your fellow students, there are member activities and they organise galas and parties. You can also visit the association room to take a break after a lecture, or to get a well-deserved cup of coffee or tea with a treat in between studying.

The UT is a large and diverse community, with many students from different countries. That is why there are also many student groups that make the most of this. These are of course accessible to everyone, so come and have a look!

UNITE

UniTe is the umbrella organisation of the World Associations at the University of Twente. We strive to create a transparent environment between the university, the World Associations and the international students. Our main aim is internationalisation and integration of the international community with the Dutch community. Find out all about the different cultures, countries and continents represented in the World Associations of the University of Twente via https://su.utwente.nl/en/get-involved/ Associations/. Already excited to join one of the thirteen World Associations or maybe even create a new one?

Buddy is a programme from the Student Union that brings current UT-students and foreign students into contact with each other. The aim of the programme is to give a warm welcome to all international students and to make them familiar with the Dutch culture and environment. Each international student is allocated a buddy, who has been studying here for at least half a year and who acts as advisor, guide and friend. The interesting thing about this is that you can mutually learn from each other’s culture and that you can gain new and exciting experiences together. To realise these experiences and to have fun with other buddies, the Buddy programme organises seven to eight activities per semester. Buddies are also encouraged to meet up and do something amongst themselves. This way you will meet people from various countries and with all kinds of different academic, social and cultural backgrounds. Do you want to know more about the Netherlands and its traditions or all the associations the UT offers? Are you curious to know about lots of cultures from all over the world? Or are you simply interested in making more friends and enjoy activities on campus and around the city? Then join Buddy at buddy.utwente.nl and enjoy these different opportunities.

Erasmus Student Network (ESN) Twente is a non-profit international student organisation. Our mission is to stimulate the mobility of students in higher education and promote diversity under the principle of ‘United in Diversity’. The association is part of a larger network, spread all over Europe, and it is one of the largest student networks of the continent. So if you are going abroad, do not forget to check whether there is a local ESN association nearby to give you a warm welcome! ESN Twente is the section within ESN that represents Twente. Every semester we welcome about 300 new students; exchange, bachelor, master and PhD, everyone is welcome. Our aim is to make their stay here unforgettable. We do this by giving our members everything that the Netherlands and Europe, but also cultures outside Europe, have to offer. We organise city trips, trips to other countries in Europe, cultural events, fun activities and parties. To ensure that you fully benefit from your ESN membership, we have the ESN card, with which you will receive discounts on not just our activities, but also on the activities of the entire ESN network. So, if you are interested in becoming a member of ESN Twente, or if you want more information, just visit our office in the Bastille or go to www.esntwente.nl. See you soon!

If you are going to study at the University of Twente, there are many things that need to be arranged, a notebook is a real must-have for you as a student. The purchase of a notebook is often associated with high costs and without the support of (for example) parents, this can be quite a challenge. Fortunately, the University of Twente offers a solution with the Notebook Service Centre (NSC). They are ready to help you and ensure that you get started with your notebook in no time.

This is what the Notebook Service Centre can do for you:

• Provision of notebooks

The NSC are supplying notebooks that are fully equipped for your study. You never have to worry about whether your notebook meets the right UT requirements, because this is guaranteed.

• Support in their use

• Help in establishing a VPN connection (EduVPN). You need this connection to gain access to the UT intranet.

Despite the NSC arranging better deals every year, the notebook will still cost a hefty amount. However, the UT offers an interest-free loan for you; this means that the UT pre-finances the purchase price of your notebook up to an amount of € 1000, -. You will have 2 years to repay the amount. This offer makes it much more attractive for students to purchase a brand new notebook without hurting your wallet too much.

EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS & HELP DESKS

OSIRIS

www.osiris.utwente.nl/student

Before the start of a new quartile, you should register for a module and Osiris is the system where you can register. Registering for a module is important for the grade administration, otherwise you may not take any exams. As soon as your exam has been marked, the grade will appear in Osiris.

SERVICE DESK ICT

The Service desk ICT is there to help employees and students at the University of Twente. Being a part of Library, ICT services & Archive (LISA), ICT services is the department of the university that organises everything with IT. In addition to employee facilities, such as workplaces and e-mail, they are also responsible for all ICT facilities, such as Canvas and Osiris.

STUDENT SERVICES

You can contact Student Services for questions about registering for a study programme, module or subject. Here you can also apply for proof of registration and an official grade list. In addition to these study programme related matters, you also get answers to questions about the use of Studielink, the payment of the tuition fees or applying for a student loan for instance. You can find the Student Services desk in the Vrijhof building.

CANVAS

www.canvas.utwente.nl

Canvas is used at the university as the platform for subject related information. Information about the subject, assignments and the necessary files are posted on Canvas. Each module and each subject has its own Canvas page. Once you have registered in Osiris, you automatically get access to the correct Canvas page.

MY UTWENTE

www.utwente.nl/en/education/studentservices

Besides Osiris, Canvas and the timetable, the university has many more websites and systems. There is one central location with an overview of all this: the My Utwente portal. This website includes widgets, shortcuts and news items, so you will have all important information at hand at a glance.

NOTEBOOK SERVICE CENTRE

You will most probably need a laptop for your study programme. Every year, the university has a number of laptop models available at very favourable prices. These laptops can be purchased through the notebook project of the NSC. These laptops are specially designed to be used for your study programme. You can order through the following site: www.utwente. nl/icts/nsc. The NSC also has a help desk where you can go for problems with UT notebooks and the software they provide.

TIMETABLES

www.rooster.utwente.nl

The timetable is digitally available for each module. Initially the calendar will be empty, you can fill this by adding subjects and modules. Finally, you can consult the timetable via the website, Outlook, Google Calendar or your phone.

MANUALS

How can you import the timetable in your own calendar? How can you ensure that your smartphone can make a connection with the wireless network? Can you link your student mail to your own e-mail address? At LISA (Library, ICT Services & Archive) there is a manual available for all these questions. If the manual cannot help you, you can also visit the SNT Help desk in the Citadel building. You can find the manuals on utwente.nl.

PUBS IN ENSCHEDE

Enschede has many pubs where you can enjoy a drink. As a future student, you might want to know which pubs there are. We would like to help you with this, and therefore we have compiled a small overview of some of the most famous pubs in Enschede. The overview concerns the typical student pubs, the pubs for a nice speciality beer and of course the night-life pubs, where you can dance until the early hours.

SPECIALITY BEER

De Beiaard

De Beiaard, a food and beer pub, is located on the Oude Markt. De Beiaard houses several ‘disputen’, but is mainly known for its extensive range of craft beers. They have a terrace where you can enjoy a nice beer in the sun during the summer. Apart from the craft beers, you can also go here for a delicious dish of the day.

Proeflokaal België

Proeflokaal België, often called ‘de Belg’ by students, is located on the Oude Markt, and this pub has a vast range of speciality beers. Many students come here to enjoy some different types of beers in the evening.

Molly Malone

Molly Malone is an Irish Pub in Enschede located on the Oude Markt. It is easy to imagine yourself in a real Irish pub when visiting Molly Malone, thanks to the Irish interior. They organise a pub quiz every Monday. In addition, Saint Patrick’s day is celebrated big every year by many students and residents of Enschede, and no green outfit is crazy enough on this day.

Stanislaus Brewskovitch

Stanislaus Brewskovitch is a brewery located in a former church on the Stadsgravenstraat 59. There, they brew craft beers, which you can enjoy in their pub. Behind the bar, they have a wall where around 25 taps are visible with their own crafted beers inside. At Stanislaus, you can also enjoy performances by upcoming artists and rock bands, and in the summer, you can enjoy your craft beer in their beer garden.

STUDENT PUBS

Enschede also offers several student pubs. Here you can find members from sports associations, houses, fraternities/ sororities, and many other student groups during the week.

‘t Gat in de Markt

The name says it all, as this pub is literally located under the Oude Markt and is run for and by students. ‘t Gat in de Markt is characterised by the cheap beer and the many groups of students who end their night here after spending the evening in their favourite pub.

San Remo

This typical student pub is located on the Stadsgravenstraat 53, and it is one of the oldest student pubs in Enschede. The pub’s interior is characterised by the many different student clubs found on the stools, the tables and attributes on the wall.

Café Friends

Café Friends is located on the Oude Markt. The Friends is known for the wheel that you can spin and where you can gamble for drinks. The Friends is the home base of many student clubs that have a drink there about once a week.

Bar Update

Bar Update is located on the Stadsgravenstraat 13, and many students can be found there. Study associations or other student clubs often host their (theme) parties here.

NIGHT-LIFE PUBS

These are some pubs where you can party until the early hours.

Aspen Valley

The Aspen Valley is located on the Oude Markt and is a wellknown nightspot among students in Enschede. The Aspen Valley is decorated like an apres-ski bar and is characterised by the rotating bar at the back of the pub.

Paddy’s

Paddy’s is located on the Oude Markt, and during the day, this is a regular bar where people can enjoy a drink. However, on Friday and Saturday evenings, Paddy’s is transformed into a nightspot where students who don’t go home to their parents will celebrate the weekend.

HOTSPOTS IN ENSCHEDE

DE PAKKERIJ

De Pakkerij is the large white building located on the Oude Markt, in the heart of the city centre. In the past, this building was used for storage of the textile manufacturer van Heek, to which the building also owes its name. Nowadays, De Pakkerij is the centre of association life, since the four largest student associations are located there: AEGEE, C.S.V. Alpha, DSCC/DJCR Audentis and A.S.V. Taste. You can also enjoy wonderful speciality beers at the Beiaard beer café on the ground floor of the building.

DE OUDE MARKT

De Oude Markt is the ultimate food court in the centre of Enschede. The Grote Kerk is located in the middle of the Oude Markt and is surrounded by various cafés and restaurants. The square is not just used for the nice terraces, but it is also an appropriate place for small festivals and concerts. For example, the introduction concert during the Kick-In has been held there for years. All this makes the Oude Markt the vibrant heart of Enschede!

VOLKSPARK

The Volkspark is a large park near the centre of Enschede and therefore also very popular amongst students. During the first warm days, many students go to the Volkspark to enjoy the sun, have a picnic or a barbecue. Many events are also organised in the Volkspark.

VAN HEEKPLEIN

The van Heekplein is the largest square in Enschede and is the centre of the Enschede shopping area. Wellknown chains like Zara, Mango, Costes, Hunkemöller and Søstrene Grene are located on the square. Furthermore, there is a large market on this square every Tuesday and Saturday.

58 ENSCH E ED

GROLSCH BROUWERIJ

The only proper beer in Enschede is of course Grolsch! This beer has been brewed in the area of Enschede for more than 400 years. The brewery was severely hit during the firework disaster in 2000. As a result, a new brewery has been built on the outskirts of Enschede. This new brewery is one of the most modern breweries in the world and has a capacity of 3.2 million hectolitres per year!

RUTBEEK

The Rutbeek is a lovely place on the outskirts of Enschede where you can relax or do sports activities. In the middle of the recreation area lies an excavated 40-hectare lake. Rutbeek is visited a lot in summer to enjoy the beautiful weather and to swim in the lake. There is also the opportunity to water ski, survival, paint-ball and climb. Each year the famous dance event Freshtival and the popular pop festival Tuckerville take place there.

GROLSCH VESTE

When you think of Enschede, you think of Grolsch or FC Twente. Combine the two and you end up at the Grolsch Veste: the FC Twente football stadium. The stadium is located next to Enschede Kennispark station, near the university. It can accommodate as many as 30.000 spectators!

PERFORMANCE FACTORY

The Performance Factory is located in the former Polaroid factory in Enschede. Now there is a lot going on; skating, climbing, acting and participating in an escape room! It is a vibrant talent factory for education, art, culture, sports and entrepreneurship.

AUGUST

The introduction concert is a well-known part of the introduction period for students from the University of Twente and Saxion. The introduction is celebrated in style with a large party on the Oude Markt, where not only students but also all other residents and visitors are welcome.

SEPTEMBER

With a tradition of more than 30 years, the Proef Eet is one of the oldest gastronomic events in the country. Get to know all the culinary treats Enschede has to offer. During this weekend, the Oude Markt will be transformed into a nice open-air testing ground, with a range of cafés, food trucks and even star restaurants.

Proef Eet

What will our future look like? At the GOGBOT festival, artists provide answers to that question. You will find a playground of multimedia, music and technology on and around the station square and Oude Markt. GOGBOT connects top art with (regional) talent, exhibitions with live acts and futuristic spectacle with social issues. A little strange, perhaps, but always very exciting.

OCTOBER

When the autumn colours are at their best, it is time for the Military; one of the largest equestrian events in the Netherlands, in the middle of the Twente countryside. The Military week offers a diverse programme, with the cross country as the highlight. With obstacles for riders and horses and bock beer and hearty food for the spectators. Top-class sport, networking and pleasure.

DECEMBER

In December, the Christmas hit ‘Walking in a Winter Wonderland’ comes to life in Enschede. Although temperatures drop below zero degrees, the city centre shows its warmest side in the run-up to the holidays. You can walk in a Winter Wonderland. There will be a romantic skating ring with a café on the Oude Markt, the city centre will be beautifully lit, and you will find Christmas surprises everywhere.

You can also go swimming at Aquadrome or discover the large indoor trampoline park Krazy Kangaroo. During the summer, you can go waterskiing and chill at Rutbeek. A slightly less active outing? Go and play pool at Poolcafé “The Bridge”, or visit The Game Box for a Bar-Arcade experience. This is a small selection from the total range of activities Enschede has to offer, there is much more!

SHOPPING IN ENSCHEDE

With the most diverse range of (inter)national chains and local gems, Enschede can rightly call itself the ultimate shopping city of the east of the Netherlands. On the H.J. van Heekplein you will find well-known shops such as Zara, Mango and Primark. But if you really want to explore the city, look beyond the square and discover the unique streets such as the Haverstraatpassage, Heurne, Zuiderhagen and the Walstraat. Want to do some local food shopping? Visit the markets on the H.J. van Heekplein on Tuesday or Saturday.

A NIGHT OUT

• Cinema - Enschede has four cinemas where you can enjoy the best films. Enjoy the newest popular movies at Kinepolis and the Vue or choose a more alternative one at the cosy Concordia cinemas;

GET-TOGETHERS

As a proper student city, Enschede has plenty of drinking establishments for a lovely evening with friends, fellow students, or members of your year club/fraternity/sorority. For example, every Sunday night is a special beer night at de Beiaard. At Fabels, they offer High Wine, with various wines and tasty snacks. Want to try something different? Go for the High Gin from Foodbar Bluff and enjoy three different gin and tonics. There are many more possibilities to explore, so choose a spot to sit on the terrace, order a drink and enjoy!

• Theatre - Enschede has many theatres, including De Vrijhof, located on the campus.

THE REGION TWENTE

Tukkers are people who live in the region Twente. The motto of a real Tukker is ‘doe maor normoal’ (just act normal), because then you are already crazy enough. Tukkers are people who are level-headed, clear and proud. They are proud of Twente, the Twente dialect and the Twente traditions. Here you can read more about these down to earth and hospitable people.

TEXTILE INDUSTRY

The Twente region is mainly known for the large textile industry. The industrial revolution had major consequences for the textile industry in the Twente region. In 1830, the first steam engine in Twente was used to power a spinning machine. This made it possible to work faster and therefore to produce much more. Due to the low wages and the fact that the people in Twente were already used to the textile industry and the greatly improved infrastructure, Twente became the second largest textile city in the world, after Manchester.

GROLSCH

You might still find Grolsch beer bitter, but Grolsch uses this unique taste to define its motto: “One day you will no longer drink beer, you will drink Grolsch.” Grolsch is of course the ultimate beer of Twente. You will find it in pubs and restaurants throughout the region. Grolsch was established on 11 May 1615, when Willem Neerfeldt brewed his first beer in Groenlo. The name Grolsch is an adjective derived from Grol, the old name of Groenlo. Grolsch can be recognised by its iconic swingtop bottle, which was designed in 1897 by Theo de Groen. A new brewery was opened in 2004, which is located just of the A35 motorway at the exit to the University of Twente. Grolsch has been the typical beer brand of the region for more than 400 years and it will stay that way for a long time!

FOOD FROM TWENTE

Krentenwegge

One of the typical dishes from Twente is krentenwegge. This is a kind of raisin bread and is baked in a tray of 30 centimetres up to two metres. Krentenwegge was traditionally given at the birth of babies by fellow villagers as a token of commitment and noaberschap (neighbourliness).

TWENTSE ROS

When you look around in Twente, there is something you will often come across: the Twentse Ros. The Twentse Ros is often pictured in white with a red background. It originates from the Saxons who lived in Twente during the Middle Ages. The Saxons considered the prancing white steed to be a precious animal. When regional awareness arose in the 1920s, the Ros was tied to Twente. This was reflected in the building of the Rijksmuseum Twenthe, where the Ros was applied as decoration. Nowadays the Twentse Ros can be found in logos, for example the logo of FC Twente and the Twente bus service.

Kozak

Another typical Twente delicacy is a kozak. A kozak is a slice of rolled-up sponge cake with jam and cream (Swiss jam roll), that is glazed on both sides with dark chocolate. A kozak is coated with marzipan.

Bakleverworst

The name says it all, Bakleverworst is literally a large liver sausage that is fried in thick slices in a pan with a knob of butter.

Droge worst

The ‘droge worst’ is a snack from Twente. It can be described as a dried sausage, which is mainly used as a snack with wine or beer.

Goei’n dag

Twente has several large cities. The most famous and largest is your new student city: Enschede! However, Enschede is of course not the only city in the beautiful Twente. SOLAR TEAM TWENTE

Daan van

Function: Event Coordinator

WHAT IS SOLAR TEAM TWENTE?

Solar Team Twente is a student team affiliated with the University of Twente and Saxion University of Applied Sciences. Where twenty super ambitious students design their own solar car every two years and then participate in a race in Australia: the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge. That is a race in which fifty teams from all over the world participate in three different classes and cover 3021 km in the outback of Australia. The purpose of this is to work with and learn from the latest innovations and techniques. I myself will be a solar team member for 1.5 years, of which I will actually travel to Australia for threemonths! That experience in particular seemed very cool to me.

WHY DID YOU BECOME A MEMBER OF A STUDENT TEAM?

With my study technical medicine, I was quite specialized in the technical medical field, but I really wanted to try something different. A student team is very interdisciplinary. We have mechanical engineering students who deal with the mechanical components of the car, electrical engineering students who deal with the electronics in the car, but also students from other fields of study who are engaged in management or marketing and communication. It is very nice to see all those disciplines, technology, and possibilities together. A student team is a very good testing ground to see which way you would like to go later.

WHAT IS YOUR POSITION WITHIN THE TEAM?

I am part of the Marketing & Communications team of Solar Team Twente. I mainly focus on the events and in them I have a lot of freedom to do what I like. With Solar Team Twente you have to deal with about 170 partners that all contribute to this project and through events we try to give those partners something back. You have a budget for those events, and you can do a lot of fun things with that. You are very free in the decoration, organisation, and set-up. Also, I am responsible for press relations, projects like a documentary and marketing and communications management. Furthermore, we transform ourselves towards the race into a racing team with other functions like car driver or race leader. In short, at Solar Team Twente you could do and learn whatever you like!

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM THIS?

I learned how to interact with people in a professional environment, how to work well together. But above all how you ensure that 20 students have their heads in the same direction to come up with a new car with which you have a chance of victory in Australia. It sounds very simple to design a car and choose the latest techniques and attract the best partners, but this is quite a challenge that involves a lot of personal professional development.

WHAT IS D.R.V. EUROS?

D.R.V. Euros is the rowing association here in Enschede. In total we have 350 members active at our association. D.R.V. Euros is a great combination between a sport association and a social association. You can row 9 or 10 times a week and really row at the highest level of the Netherlands, but others focus more on the weekly drinks in our bar on Thursday or take on a role in one of our committees. Every year we have between 100 and 120 first year members that join a rowing group and take part in the spring competition. During that competition you will travel through the entire country and visit different cities and associations during their rowing match every other week in the weekend. You will, for example, be rowing through the canals of Groningen. Most first year members have never rowed in their life before, so this is not at all an issue. You will join a first-year rowing team where you will compete in a C4, a very stable rowing boat for four people. And if you find out you really enjoy rowing, you can start competitive rowing. In that case you will row between 6 and 8 times every week. To sum up, there a lot of options at D.R.V. Euros!

WHICH FUNCTION DO YOU HAVE AND WHAT DO YOU DO WITHIN THAT FUNCTION?

I am the secretary and vice president. As secretary I handle the internal membership administration of the association and the registration of members with the KNRB (Royal Dutch Rowing Federation). In addition, I am responsible for cards that are sent, the newsletter and taking minutes during board meetings. I spend about 50% of the time working on this and for the rest we have a personal policy that we are working on. And throughout the day we receive questions from our members, for example, and many other things that come in between.

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM THIS?

I think for me personally taking responsibility and taking the lead. You are responsible for a lot of members, but as a board I am also responsible for four committees within the association. This is where you are present as a representative of the board. Furthermore, I have become much better at filtering other people’s opinions. I have learned not to overdo criticism from others. In the beginning I was overly concerned about that, but I really got better at it.

D.R.V.

EUROS

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A BOARD MEMBER OF D.R.V. EUROS?

I joined Euros in my first year and did all kinds of committees here, unfortunately not being able to start competitions due to corona. I then completed my Bachelor’s degree in three years and wanted to do something other than start my Master’s right away. Then it soon came out Euros is a pleasant association with nice people, I also did the introduction committee and I really liked being involved with the association every day.

INTER-ACTIEF

Maarten Meijer Function: Secretary

WHAT DO YOU DO AS A BOARD MEMBER OF A STUDY ASSOCIATION?

It is hard to shine a light on all the different tasks that a board member has, since there are just so many. Even halfway through the board year, you will still find new tasks every day that you did not expect would arise. Even so, there are many general tasks that all study association board members have, which I will gladly talk about. First and foremost, the board is the face of the association. It is expected that board members often appear at activities, be such as social, educational or career-related activities, which means that board members have a lot of fun! Aside from activities, board members guide the members of their association with their personal development within committees and make sure all organisation goes smoothly. Being a board member also lets you touch on fields like legality, internal communication, marketing, education and external relations. After all, being a board member is a very busy, but especially important, informative and fun experience!

WHAT IS YOUR POSITION WITHIN THE BOARD?

I am the secretary of our study association. When reading this word, you may think about a boring office job handling a lot of paper and e-mails. While partially you would be correct, in the fact that I process all e-mails directed to our board, this is far from the complete, zoomed-out picture. Within our board, we have divided responsibility for all committees among our board, as well as the responsibility of specific, all-year tasks. Aside from these tasks, the secretary of study associations generally keeps track of e-mails, sends GMM (General Members Meeting) invitations, and takes minutes. In my specific case, I received responsibility for a handful of awesome committees and the general tasks of archiving and history documentation, doing the week- and master mailing, making our Friday Afternoon Drink magazine and buying and organising our merchandise. In essence, my position is really undefined, even when looking at the aforementioned responsibilities and tasks. At every weekly board meeting, our board decides on what actions to take and in which way to steer the association. The secretary has a lot of time to take on the kind of actions and tasks that they like, meaning I can put much of my time and energy into things I really feel motivated to do, changing our association for the better.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A BOARD MEMBER OF A STUDY ASSOCIATION?

The main reason why I applied to become a board member was that I wanted something new. I finished my Bachelor’s degree, which provided me with the perfect opportunity to take a break from studying and learn something new that is not taught in Computer Science. Given my plans to continue with a Master’s degree at the UT, I also did not see myself leaving the university already after a total of 5 years of studying. I wanted to have some more time as a student, enjoying student life and all opportunities it provides. Given that I was really involved with Inter-Actief, with both its members and its activities, it was a natural choice to give back to the association I had benefited from for so long. I am glad to have chosen this path, as it provided me with a perfect combination of great personal development and a lot of fun!

WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM YOUR BOARD YEAR?

One of the first things that I was confronted with when starting the board year was the sudden need for effective communication within the board. Because of this need to work together for a whole year, we all learned to communicate well with each other really quickly. After this, more new skills came up that are necessary to have as a board member, and were thus naturally learned during the year. These include being representative of a whole association and acting professionally, but also the organisation of activities, including general competence. I have also noticed that I have learned countless individual skills as well, contributing to my own effectiveness when working. Mainly, I have made a big improvement in the organisation of my own life. I have been significantly more structured in my life, working better with e-mail, calendars, to-do lists etc. These skills certainly help during the board year, but I have also seen these skills come in handy with side jobs and university work.

WHAT KIND OF EVENTS DO YOU ORGANISE?

Our study association has many members and many committees. This results in a lot of great activities, and every year new ideas come up that are executed. Because of this, the kind of events also vary a lot, and creativity is always appreciated.

Still, some committees and events are really settled and have taken place regularly for years and years. These definitely include the weekly lunch lecture on Tuesday, where every week, a company gives an interesting talk on the topic of Computer Science, in exchange for a free lunch for all attendees! On Tuesday, we also have our weekly drink in the Abscint drinking room, where we can, for once, put away our study books and have some casual fun with our peers. Aside from these weekly activities, we also offer multiple large-scale yearly activities. A good example is our yearly symposium, where students get to connect with the professional world of Computer Science, by listening to inspirational speakers and stands from companies. Lastly, we offer multiple trips each year, like a ski trip and an international trip. Because all these activities may seem overwhelming, we also offer great opportunities for first-year students to connect with their peers in a more small-scale manner. We have committees entirely made up of first-year students, who organise smaller, but really great, activities like laser gaming and ice skating.

All in all, a study organisation offers many opportunities and events, and it tries to offer something for everyone. Do you like gaming, socialising, being supported in your studies, expanding your professional network, or just having free coffee? We have something in stock for you!

CULTURE ASSOCIATIONS

Culture is everywhere, a lot of attention is also paid to this at the University of Twente. There are 15 associations which are involved in culture in the broadest sense of the word. For example, there are associations for theatre and cabaret, but also for orchestras, singing and various types of dance. All these associations regularly give performances in the Vrijhof, which is the cultural centre of the University of Twente. More than fifty culture courses and workshops are also offered there every year. The Vrijhof houses three multi-functional theatre/music rooms (Agora, Amphi theatre and the Audio room), (pop) studios, workplaces and a nice Theatre café.

In addition to the artistic associations, there are also many associations within culture, for example books, games and photography associations. All culture associations are listed below, for more information visit the website of Apollo, the umbrella organisation for culture: www.apollo.utwente.nl.

Activism or being active are terms you will often hear within the walls of the campus of the University of Twente. You can do a lot in Enschede apart from obtaining your credits. For example, you can play hockey, show your acting skills, or go to the pub night at the many sports, culture, social, study and world associations that are available in Enschede and the UT. All of those associations are fully run by students. So, in Enschede, a lot of students are achieving More Than A Degree!

Student activism comes in many forms; from boards that ensure the continuity of associations to committees that organise many events. These boards and committees have regular meetings to facilitate activities for students or to organise an event together. But you can also become active individually, for example by working on your own start-up. Without those thousands of enthusiastic, active students, the student life at the UT would not be what it is today.

When you become active, you obtain skills and experiences on top of the things you learn inside your curriculum. By working on your own personal development, you are able to achieve More Than A Degree. Student with experiences outside of their study programme can already learn skills that might be very useful for their future careers. So will you soon be organising a memorable gala night for your study association? Will you make sure that your arts club is able to give performances? Will you soon compete for winning the Bridgestone World Solar Challenge with your own built solar car? Or will you be organising the next Kick-In for 2500 new students?

To stimulate and facilitate students to develop themselves in addition to their study programme, the Student Union has set up the More Than A Degree programme. The Student Union is committed through personal development trainings, the issue of activism recognitions and a real award show where the most active students will be rewarded. So, what are you waiting for, get active and achieve More Than A Degree!

SOCIAL ASSOCIATIONS

There are various social associations in Enschede, these are better known as student associations. Student associations are there to have a great time during your student days and to build a network from which you will benefit a lot during and after your study programme. You will find the core of the social associations in the Pakkerij, on the Oude Markt in the middle of the centre of Enschede. Here you will find the four large social associations, each with their own society. These four associations fall under the Plaatselijke Kamer van Verenigingen, P.K.v.V. Fact. In addition to pub nights, numerous parties are organised in the Pakkerij and the social associations offer the opportunity to join committees or a board.

A.S.V. TASTE

A.S.V. Taste is the most enterprising social association of Enschede. The association consists of several yearclubs, disputen and genootschappen. Every week the members of Taste go to our pub: Sociëteit Antigoon to meet each other and have a drink. In addition to weekly drinks, there are various ways to develop yourself within the organisation. A.S.V. Taste has more than 30 committees, where members gain experience in organising activities and learn how to handle responsibilities. The activities range from a ski trip to a gala for 450 students. Everything is organised by and for members of Taste. All in all, Taste is the ideal breeding ground for success and friendships for life. All are different, together we are one!

Audentis is the most traditional social association of Enschede. The traditional aspect can be found in their traditions, unwritten rules and the jacket-tie culture at their pub. And where will this lead? In brief: making friends for life, developing yourself socially and professionally and building a network which will be a good base for later.

You will undoubtedly see a lot of them during the coming Kick-In; on their terrace where you can enjoy the sun and great songs. Or maybe they will see you at one of the many activities that they will organise! Anyway; it is going to be a lovely time, see you at the Kick-In!

Navigators Studentenvereniging Enschede (NSE) is a Christian social association with about 90 members. We are students with all kinds of (church)backgrounds and studies. Together we want to get to know God and to make God known in Enschede. Every Tuesday evening we have an association evening. There is a meeting night once every two weeks, where the association gets together to eat, listen to a motivational speaker and have a drink. The other week we have a Bible study, where we have conversations and discussions about our faith in smaller groups. We also like to have different activities, such as having a drink, a gala, going on weekend trips and more! These association evenings and activities create many good friendships within our association. Would you like to join a nice group of Christian students? Feel free to join one of our evenings!

We pray together, listen to talks from invited speakers or simply have game nights. We also transmit a weekly rosary prayer through Facebook, help organise the international services at one of the churches in the city center, offer our service through the Ariëns Music Ministry as well as other kinds of social activities within our group. If you want to learn more about us, or want to join the Music Ministry, just send us a message in any of our social media or to our email, we will be happy to hear from you!

EXALTIO

Exaltio focuses on adolescents and students from the entire LGBTQ+ spectrum between the age of 18 and 28. Our association’s prime mission is providing a safe environment for adolescents within the Twente region in which they can safely make new LGBTQ+ friends. Is such a platform really necessary in this day and age? Absolutely! Many LGBTQ+ adolescents acknowledge that they value meeting peers that have also struggled with their (sexual) identity, relationships, visions of the future, self-acceptance and coming out. It can be very hard to meet like-minded peers that recognise and understand these challenges.

In addition to a wide variety of awesome activities, Exaltio also aims to offer a platform to meet LGBT+ peers and to lend an ear when needed.

STUDY VS. SOCIAL ASSOCIATIONS

Do you know the difference between study and social associations? Or did you not know there is a difference between them? Here you can find the main differences between the two kinds of associations!

Drinks

Study books

Activities with companies

Year club or fraternity/sorority

Activities aimed at the study programme

Travelling abroad

Can you have a great student time here?

IS A SOCIAL ASSOCIATION JUST TO HAVE FUN?

If you become a member of a social association, you will become part of a group with fellow students who you will continue to know for the rest of your (student) life. Next to this, there are also activities with companies, lectures are given and most associations even have a study area. They also organise distant trips and trips to other cities. Finally, there are also some sports teams or bands which are affiliated with a student association. So, a real addition to your student days!

IS A STUDY ASSOCIATION ONLY USEFUL FOR MY STUDIES?

Definitely not! Of course, you can go to your study association if you have a question or complaint about a study programme-related subject or for a discount on your study books. However, in addition, they also organise a lot of fun activities! These are both educational activities, such as lunch lectures and symposiums but also informal activities, like laser gaming, weekly drinks and travelling abroad!

WHERE CAN I BEST DO SOMETHING BESIDES MY STUDY PROGRAMME?

As you might have noticed, it is not easy to explain the difference between a study association and a social association, especially in Enschede. The best tip we can give you is to be open to all associations as you will meet them all during the Kick-In and see what fits you best! You will get to know your study association even better during the studyrelated programme on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday! All social associations and most study associations will be present at the opening market, so why not drop by?

STUDY ASSOCIATION SOCIAL ASSOCIATION Yes Yes Yes Sometimes Yes Yes Yes! Yes No Yes Yes Sometimes Yes Yes!

A ‘dispuut’, also known as a fraternity or sorority, is a close group of friends from different cohorts. Each year, a ‘batch’ of new members join the group. Disputen typically gather once a week in their local pub for drinks, but they also organise a wide range of activities such as sports, trips abroad, fancy dinners, and weekend getaways. There are three types of disputen: all-male, all-female, and mixed. Disputen can be affiliated with a study or social association, which allows people to join if they are also part of that association. However, independent disputen welcome members from all associations. To become a member of a dispuut, you must be invited by current members to join them for one of their regular drinks. During this evening, you’ll get to know the members, their interests, and hobbies. Before officially joining, you’ll need to complete an introduction period with your batch. This period involves completing assignments to get to know the dispuut and its rituals. Graduated members of a dispuut are referred to as “oud-lid” (former members). These members remain connected to the dispuut and often participate in activities such as weekend trips or the dispuut’s birthday celebration (Dies). On this page you can find some of the disputen in Enschede.

Het Genootschap BIT is an independent fraternity that comes together every Wednesday. Originally founded in 2007, we are a close group of friends where young and old members still regularly meet. You can usually spot us having a drink in the Beiaard where we all wear our iconic purple ties. Here we try to safeguard our core value to uphold the student-lifestyle. With annual parties and activities we are still proudly hanging on to that message. ‘Op de uwe!’

O.D. Xoun is an independent, mixed ‘dispuut’ that meets every Wednesday night in Café Friends. Having qualities we describe as being nice, frivolous and enthusiastic, ‘Xounianen’ (members of our dispuut) make the most of their time as a student with annually recurring events such as a sailing weekend, skiing, and our New Year’s weekend in the Ardennes. Besides this, we regularly meet up for sports, a cup of coffee or studying. You can recognise us by our bright orange or navy sweaters, flipped Unox-beanies and our cheer: ‘hoera, hoera, hoera!’

Dispuut Yorinf is an independent fraternity that comes together every Monday in café San Remo. We are a close group of friends who like to have a drink or chat together. Next to our weekly get-together, we also have various committees that organise all kinds of fun activities for the fraternity, such as board game nights or trips both within and outside of the Netherlands. Just recently, we went to Albania for our second lustrum! Altogether, our fraternity creates friendships that last a lifetime. ‘Met zulke vrienden, heb je geen vijanden meer nodig!’

Hi everyone, we are Aditi! Aditi is an independent ‘dispuut’ that comes together every Tuesday in Café Friends. Friends is located in the centre of Enschede near ‘De Oude Markt’. We are a close group of friends that likes to have a drink together, do a lot of (sometimes sporty) activities and go away on trips! We were founded in 2001 and have more than 70 members. But how can you spot us? We wear light yellow tops with a sun on the back! That’s in short our dispuut and we hope you will have a great Kick-in!

TYPICAL STUDENT PARTIES

Sometimes a friend or roommate drags you to a party. Sometimes you are really not in the mood and sometimes it doesn’t sound fun at all. But sometimes you come across a gem. Somewhere you wouldn’t have gone if they hadn’t dragged you there, but of which you make it a tradition to come back every year. Here you will find a few examples of such parties and of course also a few parties that are so typical for Enschede, that they should be included in this magazine.

HUBERTUSFEEST

For more than 35 years, Huize Heilige Hubertus has organised a house party for all students in Enschede. This party, which once started as a cozy drink on a small scale, has now grown into the largest house party in the Netherlands, which attracts hundreds of students every year. The party is held in and around the student house itself, located on the Noorderhagen in the heart of Enschede. The organisation of this spectacle is entirely in the hands of the male residents of this house. Every year, the party has another theme, such as ‘Het Jachtsvertoon’, ‘Ons Verleden Kwijtperk’ or ‘Rumoerknal’. Based on this theme, every visitor comes dressed up, usually in large groups with the same outfit. The door policy is very simple, not dressed up means not going in, but luckily the theme is not too strict.

‘T POTT GALA

Huize ‘t Pott is a big, white villa inhabited by 8 students who get the most out of their student life. Huize ‘t Pott is known by most of the students in Enschede due to its famous appearance and the gala that is organised at the villa every year in December. Once a year the residents of Huize ‘t Pott spent two full weeks to prepare the biggest student home gala of the Netherlands. This is an event that everyone celebrates smartly dressed in white tie. People from all over the Netherlands visit this party and it has already been a tradition for over 40 years!

FLATFEEST

Each year the residents of Campuslaan 39, 41 and 43 throw the biggest flat-party on campus with over 750 people joining: the Los Chichis flatparty! At the end of September there will be one night where you can enjoy unlimited drinks and local artists all night long.

GALA ETIQUETTE

Perhaps the most beautiful student tradition in the Netherlands: galas! These events are special enough to bring entire associations together in their best clothing. But what does this tradition exactly entail? What do you wear? How do you invite your date? We have listed some tips for you so you are well prepared for galas during your upcoming student days!

CLOTHING

The dress code is decisive for what you will wear during the gala. Black tie means that the gentleman will wear a tuxedo and the lady will wear an evening dress or a neat cocktail dress. If the dress code is white tie (the most formal dress code), the lady wears her most formal dress, and the gentleman will wear a black tail coat (rokkostuum in Dutch). In both cases, the gentleman will take care of the corsages, to make clear to the other guests that he and his date belong together. Besides that, it is common to have additional corsages together with your friend groups.

INVITATIONS

Gala etiquette has a fairly classic division of roles: it is the gentleman’s task to invite a lady. But beware: if it is a leap year, it will be the other way around!

The gentleman poetically expresses his advances in silver letters, on blue paper. He will recognize the lady’s reply from the golden writing on pink paper, in which she invites him to tea. Traditionally, there is no mention of the gala during this tea date. The gentleman only bases his conclusions on what the lady serves with the tea. If she only offers tea, it means that she is not interested. A dry biscuit means that she will accept the invitation, but her intentions are mainly friendly. If the cup of tea is accompanied by cake, the gentleman knows that it is possible to win the heart of his lady. It is also possible that the cake is served with whipped cream: then the gentleman is sure of a romantic end to the evening.

GALA

The gentleman will pick the lady up well in time for the gala and will greet her with a modest hand kiss (unless she is wearing gloves). From that moment on he will be responsible for her well-being. The gentleman will walk on the right side of the lady and will always let her lead the way, except for stairs. These rules may be deviated from if the stairs are particularly steep: in that case the gentleman must be able to catch the lady if she falls.

Once arrived at the gala, the gentleman may ask the lady to dance by means of a slight bow. If she agrees, she will nod her head. In case the lady declines the offer, the gentleman must not immediately approach another lady, in order to avoid feeling second choice.

Permanently present in the Kick-In programme is the Cantus, organised by Ius Sanctus. This is a sorority of the social association A.S.V. Taste. The Cantus is probably the most student-like part of the Kick-In and is held at student associations throughout the year. Here we will try, with the help of one of the organisers, to give you a preview. Without taking away too much of the mystery, of course!

Probably still an unknown phenomenon for many, but I can assure you that you will come into contact with it more often. Cantus is Latin for singing and stands for a certain student-like singing and drinking feast. Despite the drinking and singing, the main purpose of the cantus is to fraternise. Getting to know each other better by singing together and sharing a drink.

The Mores society Ius Sanctus ensures that the mores (= unwritten rules and / or customs) are preserved within the student life in Enschede. The cantus is a real student tradition that once came from Leuven to Enschede. The Mores society Ius Sanctus brought the cantus to Enschede and made it big. In addition, Ius Sanctus has also been the lord and master of guiding the cantus for years. Ius Sanctus was also the first group to hold a public city cantus in the Netherlands, in the middle of the Oude Markt. Every year, the Taste Cantus during the Kick-In is the largest Enschede has ever known. Every year

the tickets are sold out faster than you can pronounce the name of the capital of Madagascar. Every year many new students, just like you, are waiting nervously at the gates of the cantus for the unknown to come. This will be the most beautiful cantus in your early life.

As you can notice, I do not reveal a lot of what is actually going to happen. The best way to find out is to experience it! So pull the most student-like outfit out of the closet, arrange a ticket (within the 30 seconds, in which they will be sold out), warm up your voice and get ready for the cantus during the Kick-In!

Finally: you have finished high school, you are going to study in the far east, maybe even move into student accommodation. In this section you can find valuable tips & tricks for moving into student housing.

MOVING INTO STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

Is it not possible to travel back and forth to Enschede every day, or would you like to move into student accommodation? Then you should of course, know how this works. The first step is to find a room. Useful websites that offer rooms can be found on the next page. Once you have found a room on the website, it is time to apply for the room. You send a well-motivated e-mail or message to the house you want to live in, telling everything they need to know about yourself. More tips & tricks on how to apply for a room can be found in the next chapter!

REGISTERING AT THE MUNICIPALITY OF ENSCHEDE

Once you have found a room, you have to register at the municipality of Enschede. Do this as quickly as possible, no later than five days after you have moved. You can already register 4 weeks in advance. More information on registering at the municipality can be found on the website of the municipality of Enschede (www.enschede.nl). Here you can arrange your move and registration with the municipality online.

STUDENT GRANT

In recent years, a lot has changed regarding student loans as a Dutch citizen. For the past few years the student grant for Dutch citizens has been a loan. However, this year the Dutch government has decided to reinstate a grant for students. The latest information on this grant can be found on the website of the government ( https://www.rijksoverheid.nl/onderwerpen/ hoger-onderwijs/plannen-kabinet-herinvoering-basisbeurs-entegemoetkoming). In addition to the primary loan, you can also apply for an additional grant and your student travel product. The additional grant is determined based on your parents’ salary. The more your parents earn, the lower your additional grant will be. With the student travel product, you can use public transport for free during the weekend or during the week. At times when free travel does not apply to you, you will get a 40% discount on your trip by public transport with the student travel product. Please note that there are different rules for the student travel product for some holidays and national holidays. For more information, go to the website of the student travel product (www.studentenreisproduct.nl). The additional grant and the student travel product become a gift if you complete a study programme within ten years. From the age of 18, you can apply for all the above through the DUO website (www.duo.nl).

CONTENTS INSURANCE

For only a few euro per month, you can take out a contents insurance with an insurance company. When having an insurance, waking up to the fire alarm due to a housemate forgetting to turn off the sandwich maker or deep fryer will be a lot less stressful. If a fire does break out, you will be insured and thus receive a compensation.

MEDICAL

When you move to a new city, you are recommended to register with a general practitioner in the city you live. General practitioners may not refuse you if you do not have a general practitioner yet in Enschede. You will find a general practice and dental practice near the outdoor swimming pool on the campus. FOR A ROOM

STEP 1: ROOM SITES

Now you have decided to study at the University of Twente, is it time for the next step: Finding a room. It is definitely recommended to find a room in Enschede. This is a must for many students, given the travel time, but also if your parents live nearby, finding your own room is worth it! You only really experience student life when you live in student accommodation!

STUDENT HOUSE

Most rooms in Enschede can be found in student homes. As the name suggests, these are homes where only students live. These homes come in all shapes and sizes: quiet, active, clean, dirty, mixed, or only students of one gender. In other words, plenty of choice. You must also choose between a home on campus or in the centre of Enschede. The campus is nearer to the lecture halls and the sports facilities; the city is nearer to the shops and the nightlife. But above all: the atmosphere is different. So, take a good look around to see what appeals to you most.

TIPS!

Ask questions

Do not only try to just answer, but also ask questions yourself. Obviously about the home in general, but also about the life of the residents. This is especially fun during the introduction round. In addition, to learning as much as possible about the home and the residents, you will also come across as interested and social. In general, a home wants a new housemate with whom you can have a nice conversation and a conversation must of course come from both sides.

Start looking for a room early

Choosing a room is very important, so take your time. Also keep in mind: students also go on holiday! It would be perfect if you could move in one week before the Kick-In but paying an extra month to ensure you have a roof over your head, might be worthwhile.

Right. Now we have convinced you, you will think: How do I get a room? This starts on one of the room sites mentioned on the previous page. These sites contains adverts for student rooms, where the student homes present themselves. Here you must carefully look for a room in a home that you like. Found it? Then you are ready for the next step.

STEP 2: RESPOND

Now it is time to present yourself. You usually get a room in Enschede when it suits both sides. You must like the home, but the home must also like you! To be invited for an interview to apply for the room, you must send a nice message in which you present yourself. Please keep in mind that each home will probably get dozens of e-mails, so make sure yours stands out! If the home likes your message, they will invite you for an interview to apply for the room. In general, this means that you will have a quick talk (20-60 minutes) at the home. During this interview, the home and you will see whether you fit inside the home. To give you a small advantage, you will find some tips below for your interview.

Be on time

But not 10 minutes early! Most homes have several interviews in a row, and they therefore appreciate it if you stick to their schedule. If you have to travel far and you are afraid of a delay, ask for a telephone number; so, you can call the home if you are running late.

Make a good first impression

Come well dressed, alone (leave your mother at home or in the car) and introduce yourself politely to all housemates when you enter.

98 STUDENT H EMO
APPLYING

Join the conversation

An evening where you apply for a room obviously begins with introductions and asking each other questions. It often happens – especially if you are the fifth person looking for a room – that you continue with an ordinary conversation after this. This does not have to be about you or the home but can also be about everyone’s holiday or a strange story someone has heard. If you cannot talk about this, ask some questions. At such a moment, the home will best notice the difference between a person joining the conversation and a person who is just sitting there.

Expect strange questions

During an interview to apply for a room you may occasionally get the strangest questions thrown at you, such as: “What do you see in the wallpaper pattern?”

The residents do of course understand that you do not have a prepared or sensible answer for this, but that’s the whole point. They just want to know how you respond to questions other than, “What are you studying?”.

Be honest

Of course, you want to sell yourself to a home, but: the truth will always come out. This is of course a cliché, but: be yourself. Being honest about difficult eating habits or other weird customs is usually appreciated. And you never know, they might remember you because of your weird story...

Don’t be put off

You and the home should be a match. There is a good change that the first home where you apply is not immediately a perfect match. You are really no exception if you only find a home after applying 5 or 10 times. Being rejected is of course not nice, but fortunately there are plenty of rooms to choose from, so just send another message!

It must come from both sides

A home must like you, but one thing is even more important for you personally: you must like the home. Ask yourself whether this home can be the perfect base for you to explore student life. A nice house is the best start you can wish for your future student life.

STUDENTS HOUSES

There are a lot of different student houses in Enschede. The next pages contain information and foto’s about different student houses in Enschede.

HUIZE LOS CHICHIS

Hey upcoming students! We are huize Los Chichis settled at the Campuslaan 43. Our house consists of 14 active students as well males and females. After studying during the day, we like to have dinner together and spend time in the living room afterwards. If you are up to something, there will always be some housemates that would like to join you. Most often, we play games like beer pong or we decide to watch a movie in the evening. Every other Monday we have our house evening during which we undertake activities such as pooling, bowling or pubcrawling in the city centre. Other annual activities are the beer pong tournament, Christmas dinner, flat weekend, watching the Super Bowl and of course, the big flat party we organise with our neighbours taking place on the third Friday of September. Over 750 students come to our festive activity to drink unlimited beer and wine while dancing till late in the night. We hope to see you showing up in some fancy theme clothing next year. Besides living in an active house, you could also see us at study and sports associations like Stress, Paradox, Ludica and Euros. Being active in student life does not stop at the house! A few of us have done either a (part-time) board year somewhere or are part of active committees.

HUIZE ALTIJD BLAUW

We are Huize Altijd Blauw, or in short HAB. We are one of the biggest, craziest and funniest student houses in Enschede. Our home used to be a textile factory, but nowadays we live here with 17 students, so there is always someone to hang out with. Every first Monday of the month, we meet for our house night, during which we often have an activity such as salsa dancing, laser gaming, or sometimes we just have a drink at home. Apart from the house nights we also do other activities, such as our brothers’ and sisters’ day. Furthermore, we celebrate ‘sinterkerst’ together. We then have dinner together and make presents for each other. But our biggest event of the year is our house party. Our entire house gets decorated in a specific theme, and we invite over 200 friends to our home to have an epic party.

We have a pool table, dartboard, and pinball machine within our home. We love to cook extensively in our large kitchen, and when we are not partying, we often watch a movie or play a game in our living room. We like to chill outside in our lounge set or in the swimming pool that we built ourselves with beer crates during the summer.

Next to all these activities we also go on holidays together, we’ve been on skiing holiday twice, and during the summer we often go away for a week. Also, some of us are active in clubs and associations such as euros, hardboard, DHC or various study associations.

We, as Huize Altijd Blauw, wish you an incredible Kick-In! Huize! Huize! Huize Altijd Blauw!

HUIZE BEURD

We are Huize Beurd, located in the middle of the city centre at Oude Markt 3B, above the Humphreys. We are a group of six male students who strive to get the most out of their student life. One of the highlights of our week is Wednesday evening. This is when we have our so called house evening which we fill with numerous different activities. These can range from going glowgolfing, drinking beers at our own bar, to ending up in ‘t Gat, to simply watching a movie during busy exam periods. We love extensive cooking, which we do together such that the ‘less capable’ cooks can learn from the rest. It is a lot of fun and simply delicious.

Living together during your student life leaves a lifelong bond between roommates. This bond is enhanced by our yearly grand Christmas dinner. This is an evening when all former roommates, even the founders, show up to enjoy the exotic five course dinner and to feel like a student once again. As said, we strive to get the most out of our student lives. Besides our studies, we are active in different student boards and committees, sports associations and social associations across the beautiful city of Enschede.

Yearly, we organize our very own exclusive summer festival on our roof terrace. A party where Grolsch flows lavishly. We haul out our festival grade speakers, lights and laser outside to raise the roof for a night. There is always something happening at Huize Beurd. Don’t hesitate to grab a drink with us when you spot us, we are always open to chat up.

Cheers! Huize

UNWRITTEN RULES

You may have already heard beautiful stories from other students about student life, chances are that you regularly thought: ‘what?!’ There are a lot of things in student life that are very different from being at high school. There are unwritten rules, things you cannot read anywhere and that is simply how it should be. We make an exception in this article: we write down a few important points, so you will not face any surprises during your first steps as a student.

CHOICE OF WORDS

As a student, you are in between two phases. You are no longer a child, but you are not exactly an adult yet. Nevertheless, no matter how picky this might sound, it is important that certain words are changed. You no longer go to school, but to university; not to a lesson, but to a lecture. You do not do your homework, but you study and you do not make tests, but exams. You will get used to this soon, but if you use the wrong word, you may expect surprised looks.

PUB BEHAVIOUR

In the past you used to go ‘out’, when you are a student you will go ‘to the pub’ or ‘just go for a drink’. Not only does this sound different, but slightly different behaviour is expected as well. In the past you used to go dancing a lot and maybe even some ‘grinding’ now and then. You will not see this a lot during your student days. If you are flirting with someone and you both want to get more intimate, it will be appreciated if you find a somewhat quieter place for this than in the middle of the pub.

HIERARCHY

In certain areas in student life there can be a certain hierarchy. In some student houses, you have a hierarchy in order of who moved in last. The person who has been living there the longest is the Nestor/Nestrix, the person who has been living there the shortest, is the youngest in the home. There may also be a certain hierarchy within associations. All in all, you can be sure that you will regularly be called ‘sjaars’ (abbreviation for first-year student), as for the rest, this hierarchy can be part of studetn life.

Finally, it is recommended to just dare to explore everything student life has to offer. Studying is great! You might recognise some of the things mentioned above, or maybe not. During the first few weeks, everything will surprise you, but which is actually a lot of fun. Hopefully you are a bit better prepared with the above information, have fun!

STUDENT JOBS

Student life is great but must, of course, be funded somehow. In addition to the option of borrowing from DUO and maybe a little help from parents, you may also want to earn some extra money. Therefore, many students decide to work next to their study programme, which can be easily combined in many cases. Below you will find a list of some student jobs to give you an impression of the opportunities for students. Of course, the hourly wages are a nice bonus, but the main thing is that you find a student job where you enjoy working and hopefully also learn a lot. If you are interested in a job within the University of Twente, it is useful to actively inform yourself whether places become available at certain positions. Vacancies are often filled quickly and are often promoted by other people. Each student’s job briefly states how you can get more information. Most vacancies go through the employment agency of the university: UT-FLEX. You can register for this via www.utwente.nl/hr/ ut-flex.

ASSISTANT OPEN DAYS / DEGREE INFORMATION OFFICER

Net hourly wage: €9 - €15 per hour

As an assistant at the Open Days, you represent the university. You may be deployed for information provision, guided tours or study programme information. You will learn how you can best show or explain your study programme and the rest of the university to potential fellow students. It is essential that you have a friendly and open appearance so that people like to approach you with questions. Ask your study programme about the information team or register via UT-FLEX.

STUDENT ASSISTANT

Net hourly wage: €10 - €15 per hour

As a student assistant, you will help the teacher with a particular subject or module. This often concerns a subject/ module where you have shown enough skills and interest to support fellow students. Assistance may also be required at work lectures, practicals, projects, or even marking. Being a student assistant is a fun and educational job, which can also help later on. In general, you must be at least a second-year student and have successfully completed the subject. Ask the teacher whether they require any support.

CARETAKER / SERVICE DESK ASSISTANT

Net hourly wage: €10 - €15 per hour

As a caretaker, you are the central point of contact in a university building. In addition to issuing keys and reservations, you are also responsible for order and safety in the building. Helping others is a core task within this position. However, when things are quiet, you can relax behind the service desk with a study book or video. In other words: the perfect student job. Pay attention to whether a vacancy becomes available in UT-FLEX or check with the service desks.

104 STUDENT H EMO

TUTORING

Net hourly wage: €10 - €15 per hour

As a tutor, you will help other students with complex subjects. You can be a tutor at elementary school, high school, and university. To become a tutor, you should have passed the subject (for example, physics) sufficiently. There are many companies where you can apply for such a job. They will then introduce you to a school where you can start tutoring.

STUDY INFORMATION CENTRE

Net hourly wage: €10 - €15 per hour

At the Study Information Centre, you have a lot of contact with upcoming students. You are responsible for emails, chats and phone calls to answer questions about the UT. As a member of the Study Information Centre team, you also go on school visits, to give presentations about the UT and you are part of the Open Days team, to answer questions at the Info Festival.

HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

Net hourly wage: €6 - €10 per hour

There is a wide range of jobs available within the hospitality industry. Via an employment agency for hospitality jobs, you always end up in different places, and you can decide where and when you work. Examples are festivals, congresses, catering, football matches and parties. The flexible work environment also ensures that you will quickly meet many new people. You can also apply for a waiter/waitress in a restaurant or a pub. You often get an extra tip on top of your fixed hourly wage. However, a job in the hospitality industry is often hard work, but you will get a lot of fun and a good salary in return.

DUTS E NT HOME
105

Studying is an expensive hobby. In addition to your tuition fees, your living expenses are also a significant cost item. If you live on your own, you must consider various fixed costs. Below, we have made a list of these monthly costs for you (Nibud Student Research, 2021)!

• Rent €426

• Groceries €173

• Study books and supplies €49

• Transport (in addition to public transport) €72

• Relaxation, going out, sports €124

• Clothing and shoes €53

• Health care insurance €115

• Telephone €19

Total: €1031

These amounts are averages for all students in the Netherlands. 2021 was a special year due to the coronavirus, which will hopefully play less of a role in the coming year. Therefore, the monthly costs might be higher for you in the coming year. However, in Enschede, we are lucky; the prices are a bit lower here. For example, a student pays only €355 rent per month on average.

TIPS FOR SAVING

There are various ways to pay for the expensive student life. For example, many students rely on a student’s job to make it to the end of every month. DUO also offers the opportunity to borrow up to € 1.116,95 per month with an interest rate of 0.46%. Many students make maximum use of this. “Maximum borrowing is maximum life” is a common motto of many students. These students may borrow the maximum amount, but they do not spend it all at once. They put the money they do not use in a savings account, to already save some money for after their study programme or to have a buffer in case of an emergency. However, maximum borrowing also entails some risks. For example, many students will be more inclined to spend more money if they have more to spend. Next to this, as of this year the interest rate has gone up from 0.0% to 0.46% and is expecte to increase even more this year. This means that borrowing will become more and more expensive.

Apart from borrowing and working, keeping a critical eye on your expenses is always good. Can you save some money somewhere? This way you might have to borrow less, or you can spend it on other, nice things. We have made a list of a few helpful saving tips for you:

1. As a student, you are entitled to a health care allowance and maybe a rent allowance. You can apply for this at the Tax Authorities;

2. Some students are also entitled to an additional grant. Via DUO, you can check whether you are also entitled to this;

3. Check whether you can find second-hand study books (online). You can also borrow these from a senior student;

4. Learn how to repair your own bike. Bike repair shops quickly charge a few tenners for repairing a tire;

5. Go to recycling shops or flea markets to furnish your student room;

6. Buy second-hand clothing. You can buy cheap second-hand designer clothes via trendy websites, such as Vinted. You can also sell any clothes you no longer wear;

7. Play sports at a student sports association from the University, which are most often the cheaper option;

8. Pack your own lunch instead of buying a sandwich in the canteen;

9. Use the Bonus shopping at AH to your advantage or go to the Lidl or Aldi which are cheaper supermarkets.

10. Cook more significant portions and put these in the freezer for when you eat alone;

11. Use student discounts. Via the website https://su.utwente.nl/union-services/student/uniondeals/ you can check which discounts you can get when showing your student card. For example, you can go on a Grolsch Brewery Tour, play midget golf or go to the cinema with a discount!

STUDENT RECIPES

There you are. In the slightly dirty kitchen of your student home. It is your turn to put a meal on the table for you and your housemates. But what will you cook? And maybe even more important: How will you make that? Here you will find two delicious and mainly easy recipes to surprise your housemates.

HUTSPOT

This classic Dutch recipe is really easy to make and tastes amazing. It can be described as mashed potatoes with mashed vegetables mixed together in one dish. It is also common to add a ‘rookworst’, which can be described a sour sausage. You can also eat the recipe without the sausage ofcourse.

Ingredients (for three people):

• 750 gr potatoes

• 750 gr carrots

• 1 onion

• 25 gr butter

• 50 ml milk

• A pinch of salt and pepper

Directions:

1. Peel the potatoes and cut them in small pieces. Cut the union in half rings. Peel the carrots and cut them in small cubes.

2. Put the potatoes in a pan, than de carrots and at last the union. Fill the pan with water and cook everything 20-25 minutes with a pinch of salt.

3. Drain what is in the pan. Mash everything with a hand masher. It is okay if there are still pieces inside.

4. Mix the butter, the milk and a pinch of salt and pepper with what is in the pan. Serve the meal with a ‘rookworst’ and enjoy your meal.

MUSHROOM RISOTTO

A well-known student recipe is risotto! It is an easy dish to make for a larger group. Risotto is originally from Italy.

Ingredients (for two people):

• 4 cloves of garlic

• 1 union

• 150 gr risottorice

• 500 ml vegetablebouillon

• 200 gr mushrooms

• 80 gr parmesan cheese

• 4 tablespoons of cooking cream

• 1 tablespoon of fresh parsley

Directions:

1. Cut the union and garlic into small cubes.

2. Put the union, garlic and a little bit of olive oil into a frying pan.

3. After two minutes you can add the risotto. Wait a few minutes and add a bit of bouillon.

4. Add the bouillon bit by bit to make sure the risotto is going to be done.

5. In the mean time you can cut the mushrooms into pieces.

6. When the risotto is done you can add the mushrooms. Wait till the mushrooms are ready as well.

7. Add the cooking cream and parmesan cheese. Wait till the risotto is creamy and soft.

8. Add a bit of fresh parsley on top and it is ready to be served!

GET A BIKE

When starting your studies in Enschede, we recommend you quickly get a bike. In the Netherlands, cycling is one of the easiest and most common ways to get around rapidly and sustainably. There are different ways to get a bike:

Renting a bike

If you need a bike for a couple of hours (e.g. during a trip in a Dutch city), you can use the OV-fiets. These public transport bicycles are available at almost any train station and cost only €4,15 per day. For more information, you can visit www.ns.nl/en/door-to-door/ ov-fiets. You will need a personal OV-chipcard to use these bikes! More info about the OV-chipcard can be found at www.ov-chipkaart.nl.

Buying a bike

A more low-budget option is to buy your own bike. If you are looking to buy a second-hand bike, there are some options on where to look:

• www.marktplaats.nl: online marketplace where secondhand products are offered by locals (the Dutch version of eBay).

• www.facebook.com/groups/utwentemarketplace: the UT equivalent of marktplaats.

• A lot of bicycle shops also sell second-hand bikes.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

In the Netherlands, it is very common to move around by bike. For more considerable distances, public transport is a perfect solution. Sometimes, the Dutch Railways (NS) sells day tickets via (online) shops, which generally are way cheaper than regular fares. Both the university and the city centre can easily be reached by bus or train. The bus lines that stop on or near the campus are line 1 (city centre to campus) and line 9 (between Enschede and Hengelo, via the campus). When planning your travels, check for the best connection on www.9292.nl.
