Dear do-group parent,

On Wednesday the 23rd of August the Kick-In of 2023 will start! With your help all new students at the University of Twente will be welcomed to the UT. These students are about to start a completely new period of their life and you are there to support them. We are very pleased to have you as a do-group parent during the Kick-In of 2023!

It is up to you to grant the new students a fantastic introduction period and to give them a head start in the city of Enschede. You are here to make sure all new students feel at home in Enschede. Helping the new students is a lot of fun and a great responsibility. You are well prepared for this by following the do-group parent training and briefing.

In this booklet, all relevant information you need as a do-group parent can be found. Please make sure you read this booklet well to be ready for the Kick-In! We have created this online version for not only you but also for your fellow do-group parents, aunts, and uncles.

If you have any questions, you can always contact us by sending an email to info@ kick-in.nl or by calling 053 489 2356.

Do-group parents are essential for the Kick-In and therefore we want to thank you in advance for your effort. We wish you a lot of fun during the Kick-In 2023!

GENERAL INFORMATION

Introduction

During the past year we, the Kick-In Committee of 2023, have been working very hard to organise an amazing Kick-In. During the do-group parent training and briefing you have met the members of the Kick-In Committee. In this section, several aspects from both the training and briefing are highlighted.

Responsibilities

As a do-group parent you are the direct contact and prime example for firstyear students. This means you have a lot of responsibility. The Kick-In may seem like a time to simply have fun and go to social activities and parties, but it is important to remember your role of mentoring new students in a completely new environment. This means you will occasionally have to make important decisions or make sure everyone gets home safely just like we practiced in the cases. In other words, some moments will require you to be strict and sensible as a do-group parent.

Diverse programme

You are tasked with showing new students all aspects of student life at the University of Twente. You are responsible for introducing students to the campus, the city of Enschede and all associations the University of Twente has to offer. The Kick-In programme has been created to explore all aspects of student life equally. Some of these may seem less interesting to you as a do-group parent because you are already familiar with them, but for a first-year student that is very different. It is your responsibility as a parent to participate in as much of the activities as possible to give students the

opportunity to discover what they like. Of course, you are free to tell students your personal preferences, but the wishes and interest of your students should come first.

Do-group parent card

Your do-group consists of circa 8 to 12 first-year students and is guided by two or more do-group parents. The official do-group parents of your do-groups are given one do-group parent card by the KIC to allow their participation in closed activities. This card can be used for receiving certain lunches during the KickIn. Of course, additional parents can assist the official do-group parents in their tasks. They will, however, not receive a do-group parent card.

Alcohol policy

Since 2014, the legal age for drinking and buying alcohol in the Netherlands is 18. During the Kick-In, the KIC will hand out coloured wristbands to all participants, which will aid in enforcing the legal drinking age.

• Red wristband: participants younger than the legal drinking age.

• Green wristband: 18+ participants. Students who wish to join a KickIn related party can obtain a green wristband after showing ID at the entrance.

• During the entire Kick-In it is not allowed to consume alcohol before 15:30h.

• Underage participants are responsible for their own actions and their participation can be rescinded as a penalty for breaking rules.

• Do-group parents are not directly responsible for the actions of their

Kick-In Do-group Parent Booklet 2023 5

participants. It is however expected of them to take a role as an example and advisor to the participants.

• If a do-group parent does not pursue the expectation for the role of example and advisor, the KIC can exclude them from their do-group parentage for subsequent years.

• In any case, the KIC reserves the right to act depending on the situation.

(Sexual) consent

In a socially safe environment consent in all forms is essential. In the case of consent a person explicitly agrees to perform an activity and is not – or does not feel – forced to do so. The term consent is often used in situations of sexual harassment but is also essential in many other situations. Consuming alcohol or substances has a negative effect on the ability to clearly express consent, as it may lead people to ignore their own and others’ boundaries more easily. As a do-group parent, you act as a role model when it comes to creating and maintaining a safe environment.

Social media

By following the Kick-In on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok you will not miss anything during the Kick-In 2023! On all channels regular updates, important facts or interesting announcements will be made. Additionally, the Kick-In Media crew will take beautiful photos which can be found on Facebook and via www. kick-in.media Dit you snap a nice picture yourself? Post it on our Facebook!

Kick-In app and website

The Kick-In app will keep you up-todate about everything considering the Kick-In. It contains the latest news, information about associations and the Kick-In programme. You can download it in the App Store and on Google Play by

searching “Kick-In”. On the Kick-In website all detailed information with regard to your do-group can be found. Here you can view the contact details of all other parents and participants. Booking tickets is also done on the website. You can log in using your student credentials.

Media policy

During the Kick-In pictures and videos can be made of participants and dogroup parents. These pictures and videos may be used for publication purposes. When signing up for the Kick-In 2023, all participants and do-group parents agree to this. If a participant or do-group parent does not agree, a written objection should be submitted before the Kick-In 2023 takes place.

POINTS OF INTEREST

There are a few points of interest in the Kick-In programme that are important for you as a do-group parent.

Do-group Market

On the 23rd of August, do-group parents will receive a text message to tell them whether the do-group will be a part of the Kick-In 2023. After this, the do-group market will take place. The study-related programme committees (OKICs) will provide participants with a booklet with information on all do-groups, and the OKICs will host a do-group market to present the do-groups to participants.

During the do-group market, first-year students will pick a do-group. This market consists of presenting, eating and dividing the kiddos over the do-groups.

The presentation will be held to explain the type of do-group and the main focus points. Head do-group parents are expected to be present at the market to do this presentation. Afterwards, the kiddos will give their preferences using an online system with which they will also be divided over the do-groups.

This year, the do-group market is split up into 2 shifts. Take a look at our website to see at what time you have to be present, this depends on your study. During or after the do-group markets, dinner will be provided by the OKICs.

Ticket Market

At the ticket market on Thursday the 24th of August, you can get tickets for your dogroup for several activities during the KickIn. These activities are only accessible if you are in possession of a ticket. Our online booking system allows reserving these tickets. After the last do-group market has finished, all do-group parents are allowed to log in on our website and book tickets for the activities they want to take part in with their do-group during the upcoming week. Do-group parents have the chance to reserve tickets from Wednesday the 23rd of August at 22:00 until Thursday morning the 24th of August at 08:00.

On Thursday the 24th of August you can collect your booked tickets between 09:30 and 11:30 hours at the Spiegel (SP3). To prevent long queues, the market is split up into several time-frames of 30 minutes. Do-groups will be spread across these time frames to make sure you don’t all come in at the same time. Before the market starts, you will be informed by a text message about the time frame in which you’re expected.

One do-group parent can collect the tickets at the market, after presenting his or her student ID. In case you have not made a reservation, certain tickets will be available for purchase at the market itself. Note that certain activities only have a limited number of tickets available, so make sure you book tickets to prevent disappointments!

You can pay for the tickets by card or cash. The overview of the tickets can be found on the next page.

Registration (23-08)

This year the registration will be split up into two timeslots, depending on the shift your study is in the do-group market starts at a different time. Both shifts (A and B) can be found on our website. Make sure you know what time you must be present.

Apollo Culture Festival & Workshops (24-08)

The Apollo Culture Festival & Workshops take place all around the University, walk along, participate, and get to know the culture associations and what they do.

Storming of the Bastille (24-08)

A fast lane system will be used to prevent long queues for the Storming. Do-group parents can collect a fast lane ticket for their do-group at the Kick-In stand next to the start of the storming between 10:0013:00 hours (while stocks last!). There is a specific time slot on this ticket with which you can enter the race without waiting in the normal queue during this time slot.

Please note; no shoes allowed on the track! Don’t leave your stuff unattended.

Domino’s Dinner Show (24-08)

During this evening, Domino’s pizzas will be the dinner option. Kiddos can enjoy their pizza while relaxing on campus by eating a pizza on either the open air cinema or on the Hogekampplein. Be aware that tickets are necessary and that there is a timeslot system in place. Coming to the activity outside of your timeslot might mean being sent away!

Buses to Club Roxx (24-08)

If you have Kiddo’s in your do-group that want to part at Club Roxx but are physically unable to come towards Hengelo, we have arranged a shuttle bus. Please make sure the Kiddo’s in question get in contact with the Info Desk to arrange their travels.

Scavenger Hunt (25-08)

The Fact Day starts with the scavenger hunt activity in the morning. The kiddos will discover Enschede while doing a sort of scavenger hunt. They can pick up the list with challenges at the Kick-In stand on the Oude Markt. Use the app ‘scavenger. kick-in.nl’ to hand in their photos and

Dish of the Day (25-08)

On Friday the 25th of August in the Kick-In, the kiddos could eat at one of the several restaurants that Enschede has to offer! For this activity, a ticket is required. If you do not hand in a ticket at the restaurant, you will not receive any food. Two shifts will be created, the first one lasting from 17:30 till 18:45 and the second lasting from 18:45 till 20:00. When buying the tickets, you will get to choose the restaurant you want to go to and the timeslot you want to eat in. However, full is full!

Charity Challenge (26-08)

The charity of this year will be KWF Kankerbestrijding which is commited to helping people deal with cancer. Not only are they commited to fighting cancer, but also to a better life with the disease. KWF funds cancer related research investigations here at the University as well. At the Charity Challenge, you can participate in dart football or a balloon blowing competition to battle for a prize!

Sport Games (26-08)

The Sport Games will be organised by the sport associations. At every association, you can win 1 or 3 points. You get 1 point for stopping by, and 3 points for participating or winning, depending on the association. The scores of the kiddos can be tracked with the use of the Sport Games web application: sports.kick-in. nl In the end, a great prize will be granted to the best do-group. Don’t forget to bring your sports and swimming clothes!

Piranha Pool Party (26-08)

Z.P.V. Piranha organises a splashing pool party at the outdoor swimming pool of

the UT. Do you not want to wait too long in the queue for this popular activity? Then don’t bring a bag because a bag search is required as it’s not allowed to bring in glass or bottles with caps. Also, make sure you have got your ID ready. You don’t need a ticket for this party, but there is a maximum of 1000 people!

Facility Market (27-08)

The Facility Market will take place on Sunday the 27th of August (14:00 –17:00) and is strongly recommended for international students, so please make sure that all these students in your dogroup go to this market.

Do-Group Battles (31-08)

Next to the Kick-Out Festival, a second activity will be organised, the ultimate battle between do-groups. These Dogroup Battles consist of smaller activities, games, and challenges. Participating in these challenges does not require a ticket or reservation, so make sure to look around and see which battles your dogroup can conquer!

Kick-In Stunt (31-08)

During the Kick-In Stunt, your do-group can participate in an enormous water fight. Please make sure you arrive on time so you can be divided into one of the two teams.

Food Truck Festival (31-08)

During the Food Truck Festival, you can get all kinds of food to enjoy with your dogroup. In exchange for your ticket, you will get 3 coins with which you can get food at the food trucks

Kick-Out Party (31-08)

Unlike the other Kick-In parties drinks and food should be paid for by coins during the final party. There will be several coin stands next to the Grolsch Tent where you can purchase the coins.

GROUP PROCESS: TIPS & TRICKS

Alcohol (ab)use

As a do-group parent, you are responsible for making sure your group of first-year students has an amazing start to their student life. This also means you must make sure their introduction week takes place in a safe manner. Being responsible about alcohol consumption is part of this. Keep in mind that you, as a do-group parent, are an example of drinking habits for the new students. Below are three tips on how to deal with alcohol use during the Kick-In.

Tip 1

Make clear agreements with all your kiddos about alcohol use. Find the underage students and agree with them that they will not drink any alcohol. Some other examples of agreements are:

• No alcohol before 15:30 hour.

• It is clever to drink all the water that you receive

• Everyone keeps an eye on each other.

Tip 2

Ask kiddos ‘Do you want to drink something?’ instead of ‘Do you want a beer?’

Tip 3

Agree with your fellow do-group parents that one of you will stay sober during the night. This also lowers the threshold for kiddos to slow down their drinking tempo.

Internationalisation

The university is getting more and more international. There is a big chance you will have some international students in your do-group. To keep your group together it is very important to:

• Always speak English, even when only

one international student is around;

• Think about and discuss cultural differences, such as the different rhythm of the day and eating habits;

• Never leave (international) students alone if they cannot join an activity.

Other tips you can use to improve integration within your do-groups are:

• Give a short, fun course on Dutch habits and language, so they can introduce themselves and learn some words.

• Be curious about the culture and habits of international studies.

• Form buddies, if needed, between Dutch students and international students or do-group parents and international students. You can also do this when doing a small activity.

The red desk

If problems should occur within your group, you can always ask the Kick-In information desk (053 489 2356) during the Kick-In for help. You can also contact the Student Psychologists Office by telephone number 053 489 2035 or via the Red Desk on the third floor of the Vrijhof building. During the whole Kick-In, the student psychologist will be available for support of do-groups. For example, when a first-year student has to deal with bad news or you, as a do-group parent, are at your wit’s end because of two arguing kiddos. The student psychologists are available on working days between 09:00 and 17:00 hours.

SUSTAINABILITY

This Kick-In we will use a recycle system for our plastic cups. Below we give a brief overview of how this system will work throughout the Kick-In.

When will you receive the Eco Coin?

You will receive an eco-coin on the first day of the Kick-In at the registration. There, crewmembers behind the registration desk will hand out the eco-coin together with the emergency phone-number card and the programme booklet.

How does handing in an ecocoin work at the bar?

When you go to the bar to buy a drink for the first time, you will have to use your ecocoin. Important to note is that you need both a consumption coin and eco-coin to buy your first drink.

How does handing in a cup work at the bar?

Once you have handed in your eco-coin you will get a plastic cup containing your beverage back. This plastic cup now serves as your new eco-coin. Thus, once you have emptied your beverage and want to buy a new dink, you must hand in both your empty cup and a consumption coin. Only then do you get a new drink, which then serves as your new eco-coin. This cycle goes on until the end of the activity or party.

What if I lost my ecocoin or plastic cup?

If you lose your eco-coin or plastic cup, then the next time you go to the bar to buy a drink you will have to pay 2 consumption coins. Thus, the price of replacing your ecocoin or plastic cup that you lost is 1 consumption coin. Afterwards, when you have received your drink, the plastic cup you received will be your new eco-coin. However, if you lose your cup again, you will have to pay the extra consumption coin again.

What do you do at the end of a party/want to go home?

At the end of the party it might be that you still have a plastic cup in your hand. Since the Kick-In lasts multiple days, you will need an eco-coin on the next day as well. To get back your eco-coin, you can go to the bar and hand in your plastic cup. Note: you do not have to hand in a consumption coin. Once you have handed in your plastic cup, and indicated to the bartender that you are going home and would like an eco-coin, you will get your eco-coin. This is also what you need to do if it is not the end of the party, but you want to go home earlier.

Do I throw away my final cup at the Kick-Out Party?

No! At the end of the Kick-Out Party you can hand in your empty cup for a piece of paper with a unique code that serves as a lottery ticket. They can hand in as many cups as you like. You can enter this code on the Kick-In website. After the Kick-In we will give away prizes to the winners.
