2

WELCOME Dear fellow student, Welcome to University of Twente! We hope that your journey was a pleasant one and that you are excited to start your studies here. In this programme booklet, you can find a lot of helpful information, such as the Kick-In programme, some information about the Netherlands, and even a crash course in Dutch! On the 3rd of February, the Winter Kick-In 2024 will start. For 8 days, you will get to know your fellow students, get acquainted with student life in Enschede, and discover the possibilities for sports and culture on campus. During this Kick-In you will be shown around by two do-group parents. They will show you all the ins-and-outs of the campus and city centre. They do this voluntarily to make sure you have a good time. Make sure to thank them for all their help! Please take a moment to read through the programme booklet so you are as prepared as possible. Most importantly, if you have any questions or are unsure about something, please ask! We are here to help. You can reach us by sending an e-mail to info@kick-in.nl or come by our Kick-In office. Enjoy your time in Enschede! The Kick-In Committee 2024 Maud Kempers, Lotte Weernink, Lianne Boelhouwer, Mila Kasteel, Pepijn Visser & Danique Hoevers Enschede, February 2024 PS. Would you be interested in showing new students around? During the last week of August, the Summer Kick-In will take place! There will be 700 new Master students. You can become a Master do-group parent and introduce the new students to University of Twente! Keep an eye on our social media for sign-up dates and don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions to info@kick-in.nl.

IMPORTANT Before you join the Kick-In, there are a couple of things that you should know. You should have received a participant wristband, participant bag, and an emergency card at the Registration. In case you are missing one of these items, please report this to the crew so they can sort this out for you. Participant Wristband The participant wristband you received at the Registration grants you access to a multitude of activities during the Kick-In. It is important that you always have your participant wristband around your wrist! Did your participant wristband break? Please come by our Kick-In office. You will need to show the broken participant wristband and a valid ID to receive a new participant wristband. Participant Bag You have received a participant bag with folders, gadgets, and information about the services at University of Twente and its surroundings. Take your time to sort through the bag, because there is a lot of information in there that may come in handy. Do-group You will not take part in the Kick-In on your own. Together with your do-group and your dogroup parents you will experience the event and join activities. A do-group consists of about 8 to 15 first-year students of your own faculty and is guided by at least two senior students. These will be familiar faces during and even after the Kick-In, in- or outside the lecture rooms. Organisation The Kick-In Committee is assisted by crew during the event. You can recognise the crew by their dark blue polo / hoodie. If you have any questions you can always ask one of our crew members or come by our Kick-In office in the Bastille! Transportation During the Kick-In you will not just find out about the campus, but also the city centre of Enschede. With the centre of Enschede being at roughly 15 minutes distance from the campus, it is handy to have a bicycle. Lodgings Participating in the Kick-In will require a place to stay for the night, at least if you plan to participate in the evening programme. If you do not have a room yet at the start of the KickIn, make sure you arrange something with someone else from your do-group, or a do-group parent. There is always a solution at hand!

Facility Market It can be quite overwhelming for international students to arrange facilities properly. That is why we organise the Facility Market to arrange all facilities. We strongly advise all non-Dutch students to come here and finish the checklist. Lots of information can also be found in the International Student Handbook.

International Student Handbook

Programme In this programme booklet, you will find the programme. In Dutch culture, we place a great deal of emphasis on time. You may have to get used to the fact that the Dutch always arrive on time. Therefore, the time you find in this booklet for each activity is the start time. Please make sure to be on time! Waste Separation It is common to separate your waste in the Netherlands. In most households it is already common to separate PMD (Plastics, Metals and Drink cartons), organics, paper, and residual. Also, at University of Twente, these four waste streams are separated. After separation, the waste is being processed into new products, e.g. toiletpaper, compost, packaging, electricity, etc. You can contribute to this recycling process by separating your waste correctly. More information can be found on the trash bins. Water Taps Tap water is very high quality and perfectly safe to drink. Chlorine is not added to our drinking water, which ensures a better taste. Most of the Dutch citizens don’t buy water at the supermarket. Instead they just fill up their bottle at the toilet sink. Also, in public areas, you don’t have to worry about water contamination. We recommend you to get a reusable water bottle and fill it with water from the tap. This saves you a lot of money and prevents the pollution of disposable water bottles.

24

TRANSPORTATION When starting your studies in Enschede, we would recommend you to quickly get a bike. In the Netherlands, cycling is one of the easiest and most common ways to get around quickly and sustainably. There are different ways to get a bike: Renting If you need a bike for a couple of hours (e.g. during a city trip in another Dutch city) you can make use of the OV-fiets. These public transport bicycles are available at almost any train station and cost only €4,55 per day. Be aware that the rent is more expensive when renting for more than 3 days. You will need a personal OV-chipcard to use these bikes! For more information, you can visit the following:

www.ns.nl/en/door-to-door/ov-fiets

www.ov-chipkaart.nl

Buying A more low-budget option is to buy your own bike. If you are looking to buy a second-hand bike, there are some options on where to look: • www.marktplaats.nl: Online marketplace where second-hand products are offered by locals (the Dutch version of Ebay). • www.facebook.com/groups/utwentemarketplace/: The UT equivalent of Marktplaats. • A lot of bicycle shops also sell second-hand bikes. In the Netherlands, it is very common to move around by bike. For bigger distances, public transport is a very good solution. Sometimes, the Dutch Railways (NS) sells day tickets via (online) shops, which generally are way cheaper than regular fares. Both the university and the city center can easily be reached by bus or train. The bus lines that stop on or near the campus are line 1 (city center to campus) and line 9 (between Enschede and Hengelo, via the campus). When planning your travels, just check for the best connection on www.9292.nl or www.ns.nl.
