Waste separation In the Netherlands it is common to separate your waste. At most households it is already common to separate PMD (Plastics, Metals and Drink cartons), organics, paper and residual. Also at the University of Twente, these four waste streams are separated. After separation, the waste is being processed into new products, e.g. toiletpaper, compost, packaging, electricity, etc. You can contribute to this recycling process by separating your waste correctly. More information can be found on the trash bins.
Water taps
Tap water in the Netherlands is very high quality and perfectly safe to drink. Chlorine is not added to our drinking water, which ensures a better taste. Most of the Dutch citizens don’t buy water at the supermarket. Instead they just fill up their bottle at the toilet sink. Also in public areas, you don’t have to worry about water contamination. We recommend you to get a reusable water bottle and fill it with water from the tap. This saves you a lot of money and prevents the pollution of disposable water bottles.

TRANSPORTATION
When starting your studies in Enschede, we would recommend you to quickly get a bike. In the Netherlands, cycling is one of the easiest and most common ways to get around quickly and sustainably. There are different ways to get a bike:
Renting
If you need a bike for a couple of hours (e.g. during a city trip in another Dutch city) you can make use of the OV-fiets. These public transport bicycles are available at almost any train station and cost only €3,85 per day. For more information you can visit www.ns.nl/en/door-to-door/ov-fiets. You will need a personal OV-chipcard to use these bikes! More info about the OV-chipcard can be found at www.ov-chipcard.nl When using a bike for a longer period of time, you can choose for a long term renting program like Swapfiets (swapfiets.nl). Swapfiets charges €13,50 per month. You can visit their website for more information.
Buying
A more low-budget option is to buy your own bike. If you are looking to buy a second-hand bike, there are some options on where to look: - www.marktplaats.nl: Online marketplace where second-hand products are offered by locals (the Dutch version of Ebay). - www.facebook.com/groups/utwentemarketplace/: The UT equivalent of marktplaats. - A lot of bicycle shops also sell second-hand bikes.

In the Netherlands, it is very common to move around by bike. For bigger distances, public transport is a very good solution. Sometimes, the Dutch Railways (NS) sells day tickets via (online) shops, which generally are way cheaper than regular fares. Both the university and the city center can easily be reached by bus or train. The bus lines that stop on or near the campus are line 1 (city center to campus) and line 9 (between Enschede and Hengelo, via the campus). When planning your travels, just check for the best connection on www.9292.nl. An explanation on how to use the Dutch public transport and the OV-chipcard can be found on the Kick-In website.

YOUR KICK-IN
About the Kick-In Committee
The Kick-In Committee (KIC) consists of six students, and is one of the Student Union’s committees, responsible for organizing the university’s introduction periods. We organize the Winter Kick-In as well as the “big” Kick-In that takes place in the summer for all the bachelor and master students who start in September.
Important phone numbers
Campus securtity: +31 53 489 2134 Police Enschede: +31 900 8844 Kick-In Committee: +31 53 489 2356 Emergency services NL: 112
Do I have to be in Enschede for the Kick-In?
As most of the Winter Kick-In will be held online, you do not have to be in Enschede to participate in the Kick-In. However, we are trying to organize a few physical activities, so if you want to participate in those activities, we recommend you to be in Enschede during the Winter Kick-In. We will follow the Covid-19 rules of the Dutch government at all times and therefore, those physical activities https://www.government.nl/ might not go through (in case the Covid-19 rules do not allow it).

Where can I find the Covid-19 measures for the Netherlands?
The general rules in the Netherlands can be found here: https://www.government.nl/topics/coronavi-
rus-covid-19/tackling-new-coronavirus-in-the-netherlands
Do I have to wear a face mask during the Kick-In?
FAQ
The Kick-In Committee has put together an extensive winter programme from January 31 to February 6, with lots of awesome activities. For 7 days, you will get to know your fellow students, get acquainted with student life in Enschede, and discover the possibilities for sports and culture on campus. We hope you have a great time!
It is mandatory to wear a face mask at the University of Twente when you walk around inside university buildings. Once you have taken a seat, you may remove your mask, but if you get up and move around, you must put it back on. Please note: The mandatory use of face masks is in addition to all other basic precautions; it does not replace the other measures. The general rules in the Netherlands can be found in the link above (answer 2).
Do I have to quarantine after my arrival in the Netherlands?
For both current and prospective students and staff, who travel from certain countries that have been designated as high-risk countries, or who have spent their holidays there, it is required to go into self-quarantine for 10 days. This also applies if you have had yourself tested at the testing facility upon arrival at Schiphol and your result has come out negative. More information on which countries are eligible for this measure can be found on the website of the Dutch government. This list changes regularly, so keep an eye on it. https://www.government.nl/topics/c/ coronavirus-covid-19/tackling-new-coronavirus-in-the-netherlands/travel-and-holidays/self-quarantine
How do I travel from the airport to my accommodation in case I have to self-quarantine?
Practical information
We have decided to let the Winter Kick-In 2021 take place mainly online as in this way we can offer the necessary safety to all participating parties. We will do our best to organize some additional physical activities for the participants who are able to join the Winter Kick-In physically. However, this depends on the Covid-19 measures taken by then. As soon as we know more, we will publish the information on our website! Join the Whatsapp groupchat with all your fellow students for the winter KickIn: Also, check the International Student Handbook:
10
You are allowed to travel by train from Schiphol Airport to Enschede. Avoid rush hour as much as possible. Please note that face-masks are obligatory when you use public transport.
Do my (future) housemates have to quarantine if I have to?
In case of self-quarantine after travelling, housemates don’t have to quarantine unless you develop severe symptoms (fever, shortage of breath). If that is the case, basic rules for everyone are applicable. https://www.government.nl/topics/coronavirus-covid-19/tackling-new-coronavirus-in-the-netherlands/self-quarantine
How can I purchase groceries when I am in quarantine?
Your (future) housemates or other students can help you with groceries during self-quarantine. In case you cannot reach out to anyone, you are allowed to break your quarantine to shop for groceries but only if you have no symptoms. If this applies to your situation, please read this carefully. Tip: most supermarkets can deliver groceries to your home! Also there is a Grocery Buddy Service. https://su.utwente.nl/ en/Kick-In/guidelines/grocery-buddy-service/

ESN TWENTE
ESN, the Erasmus Student Network, is an international organisation led by students, for students, united in diversity. ESN aims to include international students through social activities, for example city trips, parties, or language exchange. We want to support students in having better access to resources that help them have a great time, so being part of the ESN community means benefits and discounts from our local, national, and international partners.
With your ESN membership card, you can get cheaper flights, hostel stays, drinks, and access to fun events with local sections all over Europe. Those provide support with cultural exchange, promote environmental sustainability, health and wellbeing, and organise events around the causes of skills and employability as well as education and youth.
Whether you are an exchange student, an international student, or a local: ESN is there to welcome and support you! During this semester, the Buddy committee organises events ranging from City trips to game nights, movie nights, dinners and much more for all its members. Due to the current pandemic, the Buddy committee has temporarily adapted to an online setting to bring to you some of its best activities with its international environment while avoiding a risk of infection. Student Life - Printing
As a student you can print documents using any of the many MFPs (multi-function printers) spread all over the campus. You can either print from the USB Stick by connecting that to the MFP printer or you can print your documents at the printer by sending it online. We’ll describe the latter method here since it’s the easiest and doesn’t require you to carry any hardware (laptop or USB Stick) to the printer.
Steps to print online:
- Go to your UTwente student email account (the ...@student.utwente.nl one) and compose a mail.
- In that mail attach all the documents you want to print. Subject can be something generic like “Wish to print docs”. Nothing is required in the body of the mail. If you wish to print multiple documents then it’s better to first send one mail, complete that print, then compose the second mail by attaching the second doc and then complete that print job and so on. - Now send this mail to mobile-print@utwente.nl. Remember this only works if the mail is sent from your UTwente student account. - After a couple of minutes you will receive a 6-digit confirmation number in your inbox.
- Head over to any of the MFPs on campus and then login to the printer using your student number (the S number) and your password. This is the same password as the one for the UTwente student account. - Once logged in select the mobile print option, enter the 6 digit code you received in your mail and voila!...you’re good to go.
- You’ll see all the documents you sent as attachments and you can set various parameters.
- Once ready, click on Print. As a student the first 125 units of printing are free. Thereafter you have to purchase credit. For further details you can check out the official MFP section. Link
