FOREWORD

Dear master do-group parent,

On Wednesday the 23rd of August the Kick-In of 2023 will start! With your help all new students at the University of Twente will be welcomed to the UT. These students are about to start a completely new period of their life and you are there to support them. We are very pleased to have you as a master do-group parent during the Kick-In of 2023!

It is up to you to grant the new students a fantastic introduction period and to give them a head start in the city of Enschede. You are here to make sure all new students feel at home in Enschede. Helping the new students is a lot of fun and a great responsibility. You are well prepared for this by following the do-group parent training and briefing.

In this booklet, all relevant information you need as a do-group parent can be found. Please make sure you read this booklet well to be ready for the Kick-In!

We have created this online version for not only you but also for your fellow do-group parents, aunts, and uncles. If you have any questions, you can always contact us by sending an email to info@kick-in.nl or by calling 053 489 2356.

Do-group parents are essential for the Kick-In and therefore we want to thank you in advance for your effort. We wish you a lot of fun during the Kick-In 2023!

GENERAL INFORMATION

Introduction

During the past year we, the Kick-In Committee of 2023, have been working very hard to organise an amazing KickIn. During the master do-group parent training and briefing you have met the members of the Kick-In Committee. In this section, several aspects from both the training and briefing are highlighted.

Responsibilities

As a master do-group parent you are the direct contact and prime example for first-year master students. This means you have a lot of responsibility. The Kick-In may seem like a time to simply have fun and go to social activities and parties, but it is important to remember your role of mentoring new students in a completely new environment. This means you will occasionally have to make important decisions or make sure everyone gets home safely just like we practiced in the cases. In other words, some moments will require you to be strict and sensible as a master do-group parent.

Diverse Programme

You are tasked with showing new students all aspects of student life at the University of Twente. You are responsible for introducing students to the campus, the city of Enschede and all associations the University of Twente has to offer. The Kick-In programme has been created to explore all aspects of student life equally. Some of these may seem less interesting to you as a master do-group parent because you are already familiar with them, but for a first-year master student that is very different. It is your responsibility as a parent to participate in as much of the activities as possible to

give students the opportunity to discover what they like. Of course, you are free to tell students your personal preferences, but the wishes and interest of your students should come first.

Master do-group parend card

Your master do-group consists of circa 10 to 15 first-year master students and is guided by two or more master do-group parents. The official master do-group parents of your master do-groups are given one master do-group parent card by the KIC. This card can be used for participating in certain food related activities during the Kick-In. Of course, additional parents can assist the official master do-group parents in their tasks. They will, however, not receive a master do-group parent card.

(Sexual) consent

In a socially safe environment consent in all forms is essential. In the case of consent a person explicitly agrees to perform an activity and is not – or does not feel – forced to do so. The term consent is often used in situations of sexual harassment but is also essential in many other situations. Consuming alcohol or substances has a negative effect on the ability to clearly express consent, as it may lead people to ignore their own and others’ boundaries more easily. As a master do-group parent, you act as a role model when it comes to creating and maintaining a safe environment.

Social media

By following the Kick-In on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok you will not miss anything during the Kick-In 2023! On all channels regular updates, important facts or interesting announcements will be made. Additionally, the Kick-In Media crew will take beautiful photos which can be found on Facebook and via www. kick-in.media Dit you snap a nice picture yourself? Post it on our Facebook!

Kick-In app and website

The Kick-In app will keep you up-todate about everything considering the Kick-In. It contains the latest news, information about associations and the Kick-In programme. You can download it in the App Store and on Google Play by searching “Kick-In”. On the Kick-In website all detailed information with regard to your do-group can be found. Here you can view the contact details of all other parents and participants. Booking tickets is also done on the website. You can log in using your student credentials.

Media policy

During the Kick-In pictures and videos can be made of participants and master dogroup parents. These pictures and videos may be used for publication purposes. When signing up for the Kick-In 2023, all participants and master do-group parents agree to this. If a participant or master do-group parent does not agree, a written objection should be submitted before the Kick-In 2023 takes place.

POINTS OF ATTENTION Registration

On Saturday the 26th of August, you need to be present at the side entrance of the Spiegel at 11:30. Here, you will:

• Receive your wristband

• Get the tickets for different activities

• Eco coin

After this, you will await the students which have been assigned to your master do-group. They are coming out of the Grolsch tent after 13:00. After your registration you will be guided to the ‘Event Field’ where the big tent is placed. Here you will be instructed to stand t one of the standing tables. When the participants leave the tent, please hold up your do-group sign so they are able to find you. When you have all the new students gathered, you can enjoy a lunch which has already been placed on your standing table.

Free tickets

At the registration you will receive your do-group parent card and the free tickets used for the following activities:

Info desk

Our central information point during the Kick-In is the Info Desk. The crew at the Info Desk is always ready to help you out. You can go there for late registrations, lost and found objects, and information about activities. The Info Desk is always present on location and can be reached by phone (+31 (0)53 489 2356) or e-mail (info@kick-in.nl).

Bad weather

In case of typically Dutch (bad) weather, the committee may decide to adjust the programme. You will be informed about relevant changes via a text message or a push notifaction in the app. You need to keep your master do-group up-to-date about these changes.

Housing

It may occur that some students in your master do-group do not have a place to stay. The Kick-In Committee does not provide rooms during the Kick-In. You can offer these students a place to stay at your house, or motivate students in your master do-group to offer them a place to stay.

Medical facilities

During the Kick-In, First Aid personnel will be present at all times. You can always visit them for any medical assistance. In case of emergency, always call the Dutch emergency number 112.

For less urgent matters, the following contacts can be reached:

• Kick-In Emergency Phone +31 (0)53 489 5333

You will receive these tickets for your entire do-group.

• Campus Security +31 (0)53 489 2222

When additional medical care is needed, the campus also hosts a GP, dentist and physiotherapist. To make use of these facilities, health insurance is needed. Students can get in contact with a health insurance company during the Facility Market on Monday the 28th of August.

Red Desk

If problems occur within your master do-group, you can always reach the Info Desk of the Kick-In. However, if one of your students just needs someone to talk to about social problems or other difficulties, you can also contact the Student Psychologist. During the KickIn, the Red Desk is always available for students to make a free appointment. The Red Desk can be found on the third floor of the Vrijhof building or can be reached by phone via +31 (0)53 489 2035.

Introduction games

We collected some games you could play to get to know your master do-group!

Never have I ever

One is standing in the middle of a circle; the rest is sitting on a chair. The person in the middle states something he/she DID do. Everybody who also did this has to stand up and change chairs with another person who is standing. The person in the middle has to conquer one of the chairs so another person becomes the middle person and has to come up with a new statement.

Paper smash game (‘Krantje meppen’)

Everyone is sitting in a circle, except for one person in the middle of the circle. Someone in the circle yells a name that the person in the middle should hit with a paper. If the person whose name was called calls another name before he or she gets hit by the paper, the person in the middle should start running to

the participant with that name. If the participant is not in time with calling a new name, he or she replaces the participant in the middle of the circle.

Superlative game

Every new round one of the participants has to put all students and master do-group parents in order of a certain characteristic (for example height or age). The participant who completes the tasks the fastest wins the game.

Who am I?

Each participant has to write down their age, favorite food, hobby, country of origin, and amount of brothers/sisters on the cards provided. The cards are collected. One participant starts by reading a card out loud and guessing to whom the card belongs.

You can join at any time during the timeslot and can walk around freely with your do-group.

This also applies for the Kick-Out Festival, which will take place at the same time.

Final thoughts

We are at the beginning of the Kick-In 2023. The Kick-In Committee worked all year to make this Kick-In possible and, above all, unforgettable! This could never be possible without your help as a master do-group parent. We would like to thank you very much for your dedication and enthusiasm. Let’s make Kick-In 2023 a great one!

SUSTAINABILITY

This Kick-In we will use a recycle system for our plastic cups. Below we give a brief overview of how this system will work throughout the Kick-In.

When will you receive the Eco Coin?

You will receive an eco-coin on the first day of the Kick-In at the registration. There, crewmembers behind the registration desk will hand out the eco-coin together with the emergency phone-number card and the programme booklet.

How does handing in an ecocoin work at the bar?

When you go to the bar to buy a drink for the first time, you will have to use your ecocoin. Important to note is that you need both a consumption coin and eco-coin to buy your first drink.

How does handing in a cup work at the bar?

Once you have handed in your eco-coin you will get a plastic cup containing your beverage back. This plastic cup now serves as your new eco-coin. Thus, once you have emptied your beverage and want to buy a new dink, you must hand in both your empty cup and a consumption coin. Only then do you get a new drink, which then serves as your new eco-coin. This cycle goes on until the end of the activity or party.

What if I lost my ecocoin or plastic cup?

If you lose your eco-coin or plastic cup, then the next time you go to the bar to buy a drink you will have to pay 2 consumption coins. Thus, the price of replacing your ecocoin or plastic cup that you lost is 1 consumption coin. Afterwards, when you have received your drink, the plastic cup you received will be your new eco-coin. However, if you lose your cup again, you will have to pay the extra consumption coin again.

What do you do at the end of a party/want to go home?

At the end of the party it might be that you still have a plastic cup in your hand. Since the Kick-In lasts multiple days, you will need an eco-coin on the next day as well. To get back your eco-coin, you can go to the bar and hand in your plastic cup. Note: you do not have to hand in a consumption coin. Once you have handed in your plastic cup, and indicated to the bartender that you are going home and would like an eco-coin, you will get your eco-coin. This is also what you need to do if it is not the end of the party, but you want to go home earlier.

Do I throw away my final cup at the Kick-Out Party?

No! At the end of the Kick-Out Party you can hand in your empty cup for a piece of paper with a unique code that serves as a lottery ticket. They can hand in as many cups as you like. You can enter this code on the Kick-In website. After the Kick-In we will give away prizes to the winners.
