Kasteel Ladies Doing the Most

The Fun Corner

Eliske van Vuuren
Hello to our Kasteel ladies, and welcome to the sparkling new edition of The Tiara!
What a remarkable year it has been – a true testament to the strength and spirit of our residence.
Our HC of 2023/2024 has shown us exactly what it means to wear the crown with pride. They have redefined resilience, embodying the qualities that make Kasteel ladies so unique: strength, independence, and unwavering dedication. When unexpected setbacks arose, like with the sleep announcement, our HC didn’t stumble. Instead, they adjusted their crowns, held their heads high, and continued with relentless passion and perseverance.

This year, we were delighted to welcome a new generation of first-years who proudly stepped into the legacy of Kasteel.
Their enthusiasm and commitment shone at every event, showing the entire campus that Kasteel’s spirit is alive and thriving.
We excelled in every portfolio, reminding the residences on campus that we truly have royal blood and don’t have to prove ourselves to anyone.
However, with the highs of this year, we also faced a deeply painful loss. Our beloved sister, Beata Joubert, departed from our midst. Her beautiful soul brightened every space she entered, and her absence is profoundly felt within our residence. Her memory will remain a cherished part of our Kasteel legacy, as she continues to inspire us all.
The goal of The Tiara is to keep each of you connected, informed, and engaged with all the events in our residence.
We’re here to celebrate our victories, support each other, and uphold the Kasteel name with pride.
Here’s to 2025, a year filled with unity, love, and the unbreakable bonds that make us Kasteel!
Together, let’s continue to wear our crowns proudly and uphold the Kasteel name with honour and love.
There are only good things to come...
Much love,
Tiara Commitee
Nkosinathi Tom To every resident, staff member, friend and family of Kasteel, I offer my sincere gratitude for your contributions.
Dear Kasteel Ladies and Friends
As we plan to close the 2024 academic year, it is with pride and gratitude that I reflect on the inspiring journey we have shared this year.
We collectively managed to create a community that embodies strength in diversity, unity in purpose and excellence in all our endeavours.
When reflecting on our journey since the beginning of this year, I was reminded of the words of Bishop Desmond Tutu, who said “My humanity is bound up in yours, for we can only be human together.”
I am confident that the words resonate deeply with what Kasteel stands for; a place where each individual’s uniqueness adds to the collective strength of our residence, harnessing the spirit of mutual respect, collaboration and sisterhood.
Whether through academic achievements, leadership, acts of kindness or any type of support; each of you has played an important role in making Kasteel a home where memories are made, dreams are pursued and lives are enriched.
As we look forward to the future, may we continue to embrace the power in our diversity and build a vibrant and sustainable residence. Let us carry forward the spirit of camaraderie that has been the hallmark of this year. And as we do, let us remember the wisdom of an African proverb, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.
Cheers to going far together in the years to come.
Warm regards Mr. Nkosinathi Tom Kasteel House Parent

Our vision for the year is clear: we’re committed to creating an environment where every Kasteel lady feels safe, supported, and inspired to express herself fully. We want each of you to feel the pride and passion that comes with being a part of Kasteel.
As we step into this journey, we bring with us not only a deep love for Kasteel but also an unwavering commitment to making meaningful changes. Already, we’ve started implementing improvements that we believe will have a lasting impact…
Between the nine of us on the House Committee, we’re bursting with ideas, initiatives, and projects. We’re here to ensure that this year is filled with opportunities to connect, grow, and thrive.
But this year isn’t just about what the House Committee can do. It’s about all of us, united by the bond of being Kasteel ladies. We’re not just a team leading from the front, we’re a team that’s here to listen, to support, and to walk alongside each of you.
We believe that by being for the people and by the people, we can create a community where everyone’s voice is heard, where ideas are shared openly, and where every resident feels like an essential part of the journey.
Together, we’ll build a legacy of unity, respect, and resilience that will echo through Kasteel’s corridors for years to come.
As a House Committee, we want to look back on 2025 as the year we came together as a sisterhood to create something truly remarkable.
This is not just our journey, it’s your journey too, and we can’t wait to walk it alongside you. We’ll be there to support, to guide, and to celebrate every milestone together.
So, let’s make 2025 a year of absolute joy! Let’s embrace the heart and soul of Kasteel, lifting each other up and making our home even stronger.
Here’s to a year filled with pride, purpose, and the true spirit of Kasteel!
Together, let’s wear our crowns with honour, uphold our traditions, and make this journey one that inspires each and every one of us.
We’re ready for this adventure, and we’re thrilled to share it with you.
We will be forever yours and you will be forever ours!
Catherine Duvenage, the SRCS HC member for 2023/2024, had a vision for making a real difference, and she delivered beyond all expectations.
For the past few years, Kasteel was responsible for a small school in Ikageng called "The Rising of the Future," aiming to bring joy, resources, and life skills to its learners.
Watching Catherine help these kids was so inspiring! She poured her heart and soul into every project, truly making a lasting impact on these children’s lives.
From the bus tours at the beginning of the year to teaching essential life skills, her efforts went far beyond just ticking boxes. She truly transformed her role as HC member into a mission of love and service.
Her commitment was so impactful that the goals set for "The Rising of the Future" project have been fully achieved. How absolutely amazing is that!? The school is now equipped with the tools and resources they need to thrive. They are empowered to the extent that they no longer have to depend on outside resources to thrive.

In 2024, our Kasteel ladies boldly stepped into the spaces our Sleepies had failed to fill, showcasing the strength and determination of Kasteel women.
With Kasteel forming its first-ever all-female RAG float-building team, and with our very own Bob the Builder, Coreen de Villiers, who was named Welder of the Week, Kasteel ladies can truly be proud.
When asked about their favourite part of RAG 2024, many highlighted the experience of creating an all-girls building team and teaching them how to use power tools—a fantastic and empowering experience for everyone involved.
Let’s not forget the pride of seeing our "popkoppe" come to life. Our talented ladies painted into the night, creating spectacular pieces that were proudly displayed on the float.
For Coreen, a standout moment was opening the Kasteel KIOSK for the first time and launching new merchandise to raise funds for FinRAG.
Committee members, meanwhile, enjoyed indulging in the delicious cookies Coreen sold, all while supporting Kasteel with every purchase at the kiosk.
Catherine also excelled at Barefoot Day and Canned Food Day, ultimately getting second place OVERALL at the end of the year! Thank you to every person in the SRCS committee who helped her achieve this milestone.
As we look ahead to 2025, SRCS is excited to embark on a journey with a new project, continuing the tradition of making a difference in people’s lives. We can’t wait to see what the new project holds…
SRCS is always a powerful reminder that while helping one person may not change the entire world, it can transform the world for one person.
Catherine’s legacy at Kasteel proves that with passion and purpose, even the smallest acts of kindness can create waves of change.
for
coordination.
RAG 2024 was exceptional due to the high increase in residence participation and the fresh energy brought by the new building team.
This made the “popkoppe” and structures larger and more vibrant than ever before.
Additionally, a more engaging approach to fundraising, such as regular bake sales or creating Kasteel and block merchandise with profits going to FinRAG, sparked excitement and a greater sense of community involvement.
Despite receiving very little help from Soetdorings, our Sleepies placed 5th in the Cycle Challenge, and in the ladies' division, Kasteel proudly placed 4th in FinRAG.
What an incredible year for Coreen and her team!
Don’t forget to clean out your closets recess and bring any donations to Teresa!
Let’s get a head start on preparing for 2025!
From a dazzling mural at Canvas to silly Bingle Sêr medleys, here is a recap on Kasteel’s arts this year!
With the theme, 'Pieces Coming Together', our creative Kasteel ladies captured this through a remarkable Canvas that portrayed the battles fought between different pieces of oneself, landing us in 2nd place.
A first year’s concert that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats had all the awards rolling in – 1st place for the own composition, 3rd place for the choir, 3rd place for the singing and a 3rd place overall.
Bingle Sêr, an explosion of harmonies and humour, was loads of fun alongside our sleep, Soetdorings, with the theme being the popular board game, 30 Seconds. Kasteel’s first ever Gwijo group gave a soulful performance and placed 2nd overall!
Koue Pizza was Kasteel’s stellar theatre production directed by Kasteel’s own, Lente Treurnich. Koue Pizza explores the lives of 4 university students who work part-time as waitresses, 3 of the friends harboured a secret, and as the story unfolded, the friend in the dark brought it all into the light.
Our audacious debate teams landed an overall 3rd place amongst the ladies, with Ciska Raubenheimer being the 2nd best Afrikaans speaker.
With a 5th place amongst the ladies’ residences, an overall 5th place at Sêr nationals and additionally winning the Crowd Favourite award, the fabulous Sêr ladies kept Kasteel’s name high.
Whether you have the voice of an angel, or one that can talk any ear off, arts remains where Kasteel ladies sparkle most!
Below: A glimpse into First Years' Netball which took place at the beginning of the year.
“Van my kroontjie tot my toontjie, Kasteel net vir jou!”
If you are looking for ‘gees’, Kasteel’s sport is the place to be.
We achieved an overall 5th place in this year’s sport cup, and I can say with certainty that every Kasteel lady who participated gave it their all.
We achieved podium places in sports like, table tennis, badminton, beat saber, FIFA and in the 2nd team soccer league.
Kasteel sport isn’t just about the trophies we gathered along the way but also about the bonds we created between Kasteel sisters.
The sport portfolio threw many surprises with events getting cancelled a minute before it was about to start and some events raining out, but one thing is certain that when game time came, Kasteel was there and ready to give it their all.
We can’t forget the supporters who showed up and supported us at every event – for them we say sorry for giving you heart attacks and thank you for the undying support.
Lastly thank you to Ané Hugo, Sport HC 2023/2024.
This year, I had the privilege of welcoming an amazing group of ladies to Kasteel.
We had athletes who crushed it on the field, artists who brought colour and creativity to our halls, bookworms who devoured knowledge and wisdom, and wild cards who kept us on our toes!
Together, we formed a vibrant tapestry of personalities, passions, and strengths. I watched in awe as these incredible individuals grew, learned, and lifted each other up.
We laughed, we cried, and we navigated the year's ups and downs together.
Through it all, I saw the beauty of our differences and the power of our unity.
To my Kasteel sisters, I'm so grateful to have shared this journey with you. I started off the year with so many things to teach you, and somewhere along the way - I think you taught me more.
Even though the year has ended, I will still be a proud friend cheering you on. This may sound cheesy and over used, but nothing captures the relationship between us like the saying: "I will be forever yours, and you will be forever mine." First years 2024, thank you for everything. All
During the first semester NWU hosted an open day on the Potchefstroom campus. This gave prospective students and their families a glimpse into the unique character of our student life. With our stall designed to resemble a castle, the day embodied the spirit of Kasteel, a home built on tradition, pride, and camaraderie.
Most people began their adventure at our eye-catching stall where enthusiastic ladies waited. Dressed to impress, armed with brochures and photo displays, they engaged potential residents and invited them to visit the residence for the full experience.
At the residence, visitors were warmly welcomed and treated to guided tours. The "guides" showcased our committees, highlighted opportunities for involvement, and shared insights into the traditions that make our residence truly special. Adding a personal touch, residents prepared freshly made "Pannekoek", creating a homely atmosphere that set everyone at ease. Families enjoyed their treats as they strolled through the garden. This was where our residents modeled our stylish residence clothing, adding some je ne sais quoi to their day.
Under a tent, another team operated a lively photo booth. Visitors captured
fun memories of the day while enjoying a refreshing beverage. A special highlight was the presence of our very own Miss Kasteel, De'Niel Storm. She greeted guests with elegance, making every visitor feel valued and welcomed.
Inside our recreational hall, our HC presented tables showcasing their portfolios, offering insights into the leadership roles and opportunities that make our residence a place of growth and belonging.
This year’s Students’ Interest and Development (SID) committee was the place to be.
The SID portfolio focuses on developing students at the university through various leadership projects, involving private students in student life activities and raising disability awareness on campus.
This year, Kasteel had a junior and senior SID committee, led by the lovely Matshidiso Ramashu. The junior committee consisted of 13 first year ladies who took part in the Leave a Legacy programme conducted by the SCC SID Office, to nurture leadership amongst selected first year students. This committee attended events hosted by the SCC SID office, that handled different topics regarding leadership and even had a stall in Lover’s Lane
during Disability Awareness Week, to spread awareness about Multiple Sclerosis.
The senior committee was an initiative to educate and inspire senior Kasteel ladies that were interested in standing for the HC and other NWU leadership structures. A quite successful initiative as 4 ladies in this committee went on to become a part of Kasteel’s House Committee of 2024/2025!
Matshidiso believes that the SID portfolio is a great way to educate students on the leadership structures of the university, and that it is still a relatively new portfolio that can still reach even greater heights. Matshidiso would like to give a special thanks to her Leave a Legacy committee, she truly valued the time spent together; and how proud she is of the senior SID committee.
The open day was a true reflection of the heart of Kasteel.
Ons huis
Ons hart
Ons land.
We’re proud of the effort and creativity that went into making the event such a success. We also hope it left a lasting impression on every visitor.
We can’t wait to welcome the next generation of residents into our family!
As we look back on 2024, it’s clear that Kasteel embraced every opportunity to connect, celebrate, and create unforgettable memories.
We kicked off the year with a Beer Pong Tournament, hosted with our sister residence, Wanda, in our garden.
The “Biervrou Aksie” set the tone for a year of collaboration and fun after Kasteel reigned victorious. We hit the ground running in March with our Informal. A night filled with music and dancing. A few days later, we joined Caput Mens Residence for an aksie, the night of the Jool announcement. Dressing up in our Ovies and using Melktertjies as chilling agents as we waited to hear Kasteel's placement.
Mid-March brought another highlight: the No Degree Plan B event with Laureus. We all of us dressed as our backup plans if our studies don't work out, from carguards to married and pregnant. As April arrived we celebrated our last night of freedom, during our Bachelorette, before getting married to Soetdorings.
Things heated up in May on our jumping castle with our annual SpringKasteel aksie alongside Veritas. This playful tradition let us bond with who we might want to “sleep” with the next year. The mid-year events brought even more excitement. On July 9, we aksie-ed with Villagers while twinning with your Kasteel sister. The month wrapped up with an Excelsior SRCS/social aksie, reminding us of the importance of giving back and being greatful.
Just before the year completely dried up... the entire West Campus met up at Overs to end a season with an event filled with laughter, dancing, and shared stories.
Each of these events brought us closer to one another and strengthened our Kasteel and Campus family. Thank you to everyone who planned, participated in, or simply cheered on from the sidelines for making this year SO memorable. Here’s to 2025 and all the adventures it promises!
the atmosphere constantly buzzing with joy. The delicious dinner left our ladies wanting more and more, especially the malva pudding that left a lasting impression. Stephanie Strydom perfectly and humorously put it, “Die mense en die malvapoeding geveg!” This is what she commented when asked about her favourite part of the evening. This is a testament to how amazing the food was and how
This year, the TAD portfolio took a significant turn for the better. We expanded our programming by adding two new weeks: Gender Awareness Week and Safety Awareness Week. These additions allowed us to engage with residents on crucial issues and promote a more inclusive and supportive community.
Our stalls were a huge hit, with interactive games and activities that encouraged residents to ask questions and learn more. We were thrilled to see so many people participating and showing interest in our events.
During Value Environment Week, our topic was biodiversity conservation.
We hosted engaging games, such as a modified version of Heads Up, where participants described animals without saying their names. This fun approach raised awareness about various animal species, including lesser-known ones.
In Gender Awareness Week, we organised a powerful event called "Walking in My Shoes" – a march against gender-based violence. Residents showed their support by carrying boards with meaningful messages. It was incredible to see the community come together for this important cause.
During Diversity Week, we participated in the AmaPiano dance competition held in the Amphitheatre. Our residence secured a top three spot!
What made TAD truly special this year was the sense of community and camaraderie that developed among residents. It was incredible to see everyone come together, support each other, and learn from one another. TED became a safe space where we could be ourselves, free from judgment.
My hope is that TAD will remain a safe and supportive space for everyone, where we can continue to grow and thrive together.
much fun our ladies had together. Of course, the night wasn’t just about the food. Dancing took centre stage as a favourite activity, with Christi Raubenheimer enthusiastically sharing that her favourite part of the night was the dancing. With music, laughter and the stunning Christa Galli venue as the backdrop, the Kasteel dine proved to be an unforgettable celebration of the year!

Pursue your passion wholeheartedly every day, persevere through challenges, and always involve God in all you do..”
In 2024, Catherine served on Kasteel’s HC overseeing the SRCS and Maintenance portfolios. She expressed feeling "proud," "ecstatic," and "excited" about this achievement and encourages her fellow Kasteel sisters to always strive to make themselves proud.
In her final year of undergraduate studies, Eliske was recognised as the top student in the School of Communication. She says that the award came as a surprise to her and in some ways she is shocked that she was able to achieve this milestone. She reminds herself and her Kasteel sisters that you should never underestimate yourself and what you are capable of, because you were blessed by abundant potential.

They say dogs are man’s best friend. If that is true, then surely a woman’s best friend must be a cat. Whether you agree or not, I am certain you know where this is going.
The cat, the myth, the legend… Mietsie. Whether you see him (yes, he’s a him) as a comforting reminder of your pets at home, or he’s awakened your cat-person-era, or whether he’s simply cemented your dislike for cats, you have to admit he’s become quite a staple at Kasteel.
Have you ever wondered what Mietsie gets up to in his free time (because being a cat apparently isn’t a full-time job)?
When Mietsie isn’t napping in the sunny garden of Kasteel, could he be leading a double life? By day, he’s the sneaky spy for other ladies’ residences, his playfulness a facade to maintain his cover. Perched on the balconies with a pair of tiny binoculars, jotting down notes about the reasons behind Kasteel’s success (they wish they were us).
What if he is the ultimate mafia boss of campus cats? I wouldn’t put it past him. By evening he rules the Kasteel grounds with an iron paw,
Me-Any Jansen van Vuuren
declaring that no other feline may step foot on Kasteel grounds otherwise they will have him to deal with. Remember that grey cat that used to live in Fiesta? Exactly!
Whatever it is, Mietsie’s life is probably as exciting as Kasteel itself. Besides, it’s safe to assume that Mietsie might just be the happiest cat on campus. That and he is probably the most famous one too, having to sign autographs wherever he goes and most likely filling up your phone’s storage (because you’re basically his paparazzi).
Whatever genius strategy he’s cooked up in that tiny brain of his should definitely be studied by scientists; it might just hold the secret to world peace.
There’s something truly special about the way Kasteel has poured so much love and care into this one little creature. It’s a reminder of the warmth and community spirit that fills our residence, a love so abundant it even spills over to our four-legged family.
Mietsie isn’t just a cat. He’s a reflection of the joy, kindness, and sisterhood that makes Kasteel a home.
This year was full of the best hits of our decade.
From music we can dance to, to music that we can cry our hearts out. Music is about more than what we listen to, it’s what we feel and what we can relate to.
For some people, it’s what makes them who they are and how they can express themselves.
In 2024 we listened to sensations like Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish who both broke records this year.
The top 5 Spotify artists in 2024 are Bruno Mars claiming the top spot, The Weeknd who moved down to the second place and Lady Gaga claiming 3rd place.
With Billie Eilish’s new album, she moved to 4th place and lastly Taylor Swift at 5th.
We asked the Kasteel ladies what their favourites were this year, and we found a variety of genres like: Pop, R&B, Afrikaans and Country. We narrowed it down to a top 5 songs and artists.
Are you still watching? This summer on Netflix there are a variety of movies and shows you can watch to keep yourself entertained.
The Kasteel ladies shared some great recommendations on what to watch based on their favourites this past year.

Can I stay up past my bedtime?
Pleaseeee? We used to beg our parents. For a later bedtime. For more dessert. For another playdate with our friends. I remember as a young girl, having a magic diary. I would write about having ‘the best day EVER’ because I rode a rollercoaster for the first time, or I would rant about my sister getting her way because she was younger.
However, most of the time I would write lists of hopes and dreams, for the future, for when I entered womanhood. Except they weren’t hopes and dreams because they were definitely going to come true. Why? My magic diary, of course. I believed that whatever aspirations I wrote down in my diary, HAD to come true.
My list of totally achievable and realistic, and not at all cliché aspirations read as follows: When I grow up, I am going to …
1. Have a boyfriend
2. Have long beautiful hair
3. Be popular
4. Have a model’s body
5. Be pretty
Little me thought it would be so easy, all I had to do was wait and just like, you guessed it, magic, I would transform and my list would complete itself. Plot twist, little me was wrong.
“Can I stay up past my bedtime?” turned into “Who am I?” Am I pretty? Am I likeable? Am I good enough?
Where did these doubts come from?
Womanhood and all its uncertainties. It is as though a switch flipped overnight. Suddenly I was filled with self-doubt and a craving to be like everyone else.
What I didn't realise was that womanhood was supposed to be uncertain, how else was I supposed to make my own choices and become my own person? I found freedom in the uncertainty, my life was mine to build.
What I have also come to realise is that it is not the uncertainty that causes anxiety and despair. The stressor is the lie that everyone else has got it figured out, the false belief that life is only uncertain for me.
With all these realisations, it is only right that I update my list.
1. Find happiness within myself
2. Cherish every moment
3. Hold on to your people
4. Remember you’ve always been capable
5. Appreciate what you have, nothing and no one lasts forever
Developing in womanhood is complex, it is scary and beautiful and difficult and tiring and wonderful and full of surprises. If you take away nothing else, just remember, be kind to yourself and everything will be okay.
Why am I beautiful and full of personality but I don't have a boyfriend?
Faith Kekana
Is it possible that the decisions people make aren’t a reflection of you?
I have a friend, her name is Loatile, and I frequently find myself yelling at her. She is the most self-critical person I know and it tends to bother me how she has an ability to manufacture criticism from what I, and probably a lot of other people, consider her beautifully woven character.
In the urban Pretorian culture, we would call her “lepyatla” (lee –peeyahcla), which means an attractive and incredibly beautiful woman. Not only is the operation of her mind captivating, but she’s also an empath. A woman of high moral value.
During our last encounter, she posed a question to me, “Why am I beautiful and full of personality, yet I don’t have a boyfriend? What is wrong with me?”
To the first question, there is a spectrum of answers: Attractiveness is subjective, the element of serendipity, a lack of exposure, timing, circumstance and you can probably name more.
But the second question, the assumption that something is wrong with her triggered me into thinking if we always think an undesired external outcome, is our fault.
It’s unfortunate, really. What more can a girl do? I think something we often forget when we interact with the outside world is that our system is intertwining with many other systems which means beliefs intertwining, backgrounds intertwining, perceptions and experiences intertwining.
Is it not oblivious to constantly criminalise our system when we don’t interact quite right? But don’t get me wrong, a lack of accountability or self-awareness is not what is being advertised here. Rather, it is a recognition that some things require an effort from you, but they reach a wall. Beyond that wall, is beyond your control.
A consideration for what is within your control is your mindset. I think we can devote a certain amount of effort to analyse ourselves and our needs and from that we reap personal growth and the standards we wish to see from any interaction.
But accompanying this analysis should be gratitude too. There is so much we fail to appreciate about ourselves when we are not externally validated. It’s even exhibited in the title of this piece: the subject has become the lack of a boyfriend instead of how you’re beautiful and vibrant.
Honestly, the appreciation we have for ourselves shouldn’t lay in the hands of the outside world because when it does and we do not receive external validation, we start to ask ourselves the same things Loatile asked, “What is wrong with me?”
As cliché as it might sound, if anyone doesn’t find interest in what you have to offer them, that decision lies in their preference, not your deprecation. And if you really feel the need to explore extra measures, you could always manipulate circumstance by “putting yourself more out there” wherever there is, but I don’t recommend exploiting your self-esteem. After all, “the best we can do is breathe and reboot”.
