RAG
By Jo-Mari Janse van Rensburg
In 2024, our Kasteel ladies boldly stepped into the spaces our Sleepies had failed to fill, showcasing the strength and determination of Kasteel women.
With Kasteel forming its first-ever all-female RAG float-building team, and with our very own Bob the Builder, Coreen de Villiers, who was named Welder of the Week, Kasteel ladies can truly be proud.
When asked about their favourite part of RAG 2024, many highlighted the experience of creating an all-girls building team and teaching them how to use power tools—a fantastic and empowering experience for everyone involved.
Let’s not forget the pride of seeing our "popkoppe" come to life. Our talented ladies painted into the night, creating spectacular pieces that were proudly displayed on the float.
For Coreen, a standout moment was opening the Kasteel KIOSK for the first time and launching new merchandise to raise funds for FinRAG.
Committee members, meanwhile, enjoyed indulging in the delicious cookies Coreen sold, all while supporting Kasteel with every purchase at the kiosk.
RAG 2024 was exceptional due to the high increase in residence participation and the fresh energy brought by the new building team.
This made the “popkoppe” and structures larger and more vibrant than ever before.
Additionally, a more engaging approach to fundraising, such as regular bake sales or creating Kasteel and block merchandise with profits going to FinRAG, sparked excitement and a greater sense of community involvement.
Despite receiving very little help from Soetdorings, our Sleepies placed 5th in the Cycle Challenge, and in the ladies' division, Kasteel proudly placed 4th in FinRAG.
What an incredible year for Coreen and her team!
